your personal wardrobe equivalent of the blue oxford shirt

you know, whatever it is you've made your working week standby and you have like five or six of practically the same thing. I realized this weekend I own about a half dozen ribbed black zip mock sweaters. I'm wearing one today and will probably wear two more before the week is out.

what's your boring answer in the morning?

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

(also fuck you if your answer is blue jeans)

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Low-heeled dress shoes, usu with squared toes and some kind of buckle design. I have them in patent black, patent red, yellow leather, black leather, and some other varying types. All about 1" heels.

xp Haha I only have one pair of "jean" jeans. I just wear them four days a week.

Laurel, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

I have six black/charcoal suits.

Bodrick III, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

White Oxford shirt.

snoball, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I think of all blue dress shirts, from proper Oxford light blue to that "French" or "country" vivid cornflower color, as "midtown blue". And probably 95% of the time they fit their wearers abominably. Dud there.

Laurel, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

Sometimes a nice one looks really awesome on someone with blue eyes or whatev and I have to think "Oh yeah that's right, blue shirts aren't inherently evil!"

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

Nothing more specific than a navy or dark gray suit, some of them pinstriped, and white or blue or both shirt (with the odd pink thrown in on more summer-y days), usually tieless, but I do those too, some trad, some less so. I'm basically too cheap to buy shirts that fit well.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

i have 3 pair of dark brown cords that i wear very regularly. today it's a pair of flannel lined pants (air temp was 4 above when i left this morning), yesterday it was a pair of "wheat" colored cords.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

This time of year, it's the green sweater. I have three, they are virtually identical, and at least half the shirts in my closet look ok-to-good under them. Next choice: black sweater, which is even more versatile color-wise, but I only have two.

kenan, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

i've got 3-4 brown or dark green button down shirts, a couple of which have epaulets and look a little military.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Old Navy fitted long sleeved crewneck t-shirts. I have black, white and heather gray. Mainly because they are utter crap, the feel soft and broken and even evidence small holes after ONE WASH. But they look good if you can't afford like a Banana Republic or A.P.C. equiv.

I have at least a dozen, elbow-length, scoop-neck knit shirts in various colors. Today it's yellow. These are paired up with various skirts and mid-height heels, boots at least once a week.

Once or twice a week I'll wear pants (or dark jeans if I am meeting-less) and higher heels.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

The v-neck over t-shirt or undershirt can be ok in a more casual environment, as long as the v is relatively shallow and the t-shirt higher-quality or a crewneck undershirt designed to lie flat (without the neck roll of some t's). Better to put a buttondown in between them.

I know a dude who rocks the zip sweater as standard look, and it's not terrible, tho a bit too casual in my world. I can definitely see the old-man vibe. Personally, I'd leave the visible zipper to outdoor wear, tho I don't feel the same about buttons, especially on white-ish, patterned shirts that camouflage them better.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

I'm seeing more mocks replacing the zip with buttons kind of mock-henley style, I could deal with that.

fitted plaid shirts that are impossible to find (must all US clothes be made like garbage bags?), those short-collared dress shirts they stopped making when everyone stopped wearing ties, and various ties to go with those shirts.

next comment: why do people in the US really insist on dressing like absolute slobs, especially at work? It's impossible to find affordable nice fitting clothing if you're a skinny/average dude.

burt_stanton, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

Bonita Applebum, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

max, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

I just kind of have a problem with the mock neck in general. I've got a tall rollneck ski-ish sweater, but it's mostly for functionality and I'm not gonna wear it to work.

The v over untucked undershirt (visible bottom line) with jeans is my standard non-work uniform in colder weather. It might owe a bit too much to girl style, but I don't really care.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

You'd think - even APC's shirts are too baggy. It's like they up the size when they bring the to the US. Custom shirt makers or imports are the only option.

When I worked for a Japanese corporation all the Japanese dudes there wore the most amazing fitting clothing for slim guys... I want to take a trip to Japan just to buy a lifetime supply of that shit.

i have no idea where dude lives, but just go to a tailor if you have that much trouble with what you're buying off the rack.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

To tailor what you need to to make an off the rack shirt look nice is more expensive than importing shirts from countries with ... less prodigious waistlines.

burt_stanton, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

a big reason for my mock collar fandom is that regular fitted dress collars abrade my neck uncomfortably and rack shirt collars just look sloppy. I like crew sweaters too but I don't take to scarves and badge lanyards are just annoying on a bare neck so I usually reserve crews for the weekends

Out of the first 100 google results for "blue oxford shirt", this thread is the only result that says anything remotely disparaging about them.

I have often found previous ilx fashion discussions helpful - for instance, I have stopped buying pleated pants.

What do these shirts signify to you?

Carhartt short-sleeved "clerk" shirts - I must own about ten of these in various colours and they suit my work-life *perfectly*: really practical and hard-wearing, can be washed and washed without suffering, don't look too scruffy but also mean I can do manual elements of my job without worrying about ruining my clothes. They're also really reasonably priced, which makes a wallet-saving change from previous jobs (suits all the way).
