This is going to be terrible!

See?

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

Echoing a slew of online reports, Variety says that Kitsch (Tim Riggins on NBC's "Friday Night Lights") will play Gambit, a bo-wielding Cajun with the ability to manipulate kinetic energy and an on-and-off romance with Rogue.

Of course I first read that as 'bro-wielding Cajun'

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

will.i.am??

carne asada, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

will.i.am??

Can't wait for the inevitable 'yes we can' line in the script.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

The wolverine origin story that was set in the 19th century (was that the only one?) was fucking awful! I hope they don't use any of that material.

Dan I., Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

I'm guessing they'll keep the timeline consistent with the X-Men trilogy, or at least not jump back 100 years.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

will.i.am as Wraith is kind of awesome, assuming they make his character like Abyss.

Liev Schreiber as the character played by a gigantic wrestler in the first movie? waht

John and Fluffy Bear are already planning what to drink at the home double-bill showing of this and Catwoman.

Aw what happened 2 Josh Holloway as Gambit?

nickalicious, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

Unconfirmed rumors have been posted on the net that Josh Holloway had turned down an offer to play the popular X-Man Gambit. The alleged reason was that Gambit was too similar to “Sawyer” who Holloway plays on LOST.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

ok if this is as bad as catwoman or daredevil I will be kind of surprised.
elektra was a better than either of those, I thought.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I don't totally understand why everyone's howling like this is some terrible out of left field spinoff idea from a studio desperate to milk a franchise. there's been talk of a Wolverine movie probably since the first X-Men, and I see no reason to expect this won't at least be better than that last one that got all Ratnered up.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

elektra was worse than EVERYTHING.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

Reynolds ("Definitely Maybe") will play Deadpool, an assassin and self-healer. It's expected to only be a cameo, but if the character proves popular, he could be the centerpiece for a future film.

I love Deadpool, but I think Ryan Reynolds should be hit in the face with a shovel.

Nicole, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

Every time I think "This might not be too bad..." I remember the Deadpoolish character he played in Blade 3.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

Ryan Reynolds will always have a warm place in my heart for his delivery of the "marijuana... but WHY?" line in Harold and Kumar

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

zomg catwoman was so much better the elektra. seriously. i never could figure out why it was panned at all except that it didn't stick to the fanboy script.

s.clover, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

catwoman was utterly horrendous. you are a fool.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

I think Ryan Reynolds should be hit in the face with a shovel.

"Take me out like Kanye. It's a man's way to die."

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

Catwoman featured many many shots of Halle Berry in skin-tight leather pants, ergo it cannot have been horrendous.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

half of those shots were of the adrianne version of halle berry, ergo it was horrendous. CG animated cats in non-cartoon movie = fuck you creepy weird bastards

Ah, but half of them WERE NOT!

HI DERE, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

Collins ("The Merchant of Venice") will play Silver Fox, Wolverine's lover.

Silver Fox? Really? Was she a character prior to the film? (ILC guys to thread.)

ian, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

She was a very minor character iirc.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i've never read any comics involving her, though.

Jordan, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

According to most accounts, Silver Fox lived with him in Canada at the dawn of the 20th century. She, a Native Canadian Blackfoot, and he, a frontiersman, enjoyed many happy times together.

A movie about this era would be awesome.

Shakey, Marvel's trying to make a film of every major character, with a view to making TEAM movies, like the Avengers, with the original actors from the various films.

It's part of their plan for increased revenue, since the comics aren't thaaaat profitable.

Things I liked about "Wolverine":

- The fights. Awesome.
- Will.I.Am! Seriously!
- The commitment to using the comic book continuity as a stepping stone to build a world that makes more sense on film; the vast majority of changes to backstory that they made in order to have a coherent film were wise decisions.
- Liev Schrieber. Dude was (wait for it) EPIC. Except for one thing.
- Massive lolz at the boxing scene, that was pretty much note-perfect in terms of scripting/pacing/acting.

Things I didn't like about "Wolverine":

- Silver Fox. srsly stfu
- The gaping continuity flaw of having Liev Schrieber's Sabertooth and the giant wrestler Sabertooth from the original movie have the same name and the same powers.
- Liev's all-fours run was not menacing, it was actually really prissy and comical.
- Is it just me or were most of Gambit's actions in the alley fight kind of arbitrary and nonsensical?
- I felt a sullen sense of shame for not having been in the gym for the past three years after seeing this movie.
- I understand that the silent killer Deadpool with the melange of powers makes for a more compelling movie boss fight than the comic book version of the character, but I really missed the Jokeresque sense of macabre mayhem generated by the comic book character. Also wtf at the ending.

dan pretty much otm. this is not nearly as terrible as the reviews have made it seem. we really didn't need the "walking away as something explodes behind you" and "anguished skyward yell at death of loved one" cliches.

I didn't mind the anguished yell as that is a cliche that Wolverine revels in. I also thought the amnesia was really well done.

Silver Fox was Wolverine's annoying girlfriend.

I think Kid Liev was carving a shank because he was "a bad kid" who had a drunk, abusive father; it was supposed to set him up as being someone who reveled in violence from an early age. I don't know that he was supposed to be the same Sabertooth as the one from the first X-Men movie, but that Sabertooth was certainly supposed to be the Victor Creed character from the comic books (and they both have the same powers).

I didn't like the Deadpool thing, it was just like Sylar! The X-Men films as a whole suffer from rubbish baddies, Magneto is okay, just way too old - they should have made him more like Ultimate Magneto.

Overall, it was quite good knock-a-bout fun...they should've cast Stan Lee as the old farmer.

Orin Boyd (jel --), Monday, 4 May 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, and Professor X must have been entirely CGI, coz Patrick Stewart isn't listed in the cast on IMDB.

The word seems to be that what Gavin Hood turned into a year ago was both a very decent film and rated R. He's as obvious a choice for this as Bryan Singer was, and it is a shame he couldn't see his vision realized.

so yea this wasn't great. but i still enjoyed it i guess. most of the characters pretty much sucked except for logan & schrieber. brian cox was 100x better as stryker than the new guy, tho it's possible that the character was just better written in X2. i mean as an x-men fanboy i'm gonna get all excited at seeing any of my childhood favorites on the screen but a lot of this just seemed so half-assed and poorly written.

like, um, that fucking terrible scene at the end when xavier comes out of nowhere to land on the island and save the freed mutants. "hi scott i can hear your thoughts, i am here to help you" lol. tho i did enjoy seeing teenage cyclops.

deadpool character was so bad. reminded me of bane from 'batman and robin' - just this big stupid girth of a badguy who's just dumb and tough, totally uninteresting as a villian. also there weren't very many interesting mutants in this, was there? no crazy powers, nothing terribly new.

what was the asian dude's powers anyways? just really fast? yawn.

tho i thought x3 was shit when i first saw it and actually enjoyed it second time around. maybe this will be better seeing it again, now that i know it was pretty mediocre

Silverfox was such a waste of space!

I tried watching X-Men 3 again the other week but it was just awful. Still have no desire to see Wolverine at all.

i might even say x#3 > wolverine

mark cl, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 14:10 (sixteen years ago)

Definitely. Wolverine should have been direct to DVD, if that. Awful.

I didn't mind this movie at all. Totally superfluous so I just appreciated all the goofy details, ott action sequences and the fact that Liev Schrieber was actually kind of cool as a kitty cat man.

Not psyched about Magneto, though. Maybe cuz it sounds like Hannibal Rising, which truly sucked.

I will probably not see Thor.

The workprint version is pretty great and fun to watch. Were there any major differences between it and the final release?
The guy who plays Blob emotes pretty well through a fat suit, a lot better than say Eddie Murphy or Gwyneth Paltrow.
I could see how paying money for this would really sour the experience, though.

jackman wolverine has an awesome 'young clint eastwood' look in this imho.

I expected him to leave at some point, but figured it'd be over battles with Tom Rothman and not a family thing.
