Surmounter, Monday, 25 February 2008 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

The Department of the Interior didn't want us to be monkeying around on Mount Rushmore at all, because the original Ernie Lehman story was called "The Man on Lincoln's Nose," which sounded like a put-down of the monument. So the Department of the Interior said, 'Nobody is going to film this sculpture if the movie is going to be called The Man on Lincoln's Nose.' So I told Hitchcock, if the Department of the Interior is not going to let us work on the monument, maybe we better look for another high place. And he said, "But, Bob, Mount Rushmore is the only reason I'm making the movie!" So we went up to the top of the monument and found these rusty cables and boatswain's chairs that the sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, had used. The other people on the crew were leery of heights, but I was younger and more foolish. I got in a boatswain's chair, and they lowered me over the edge of Lincoln's head. As I got down a little bit, the old cable was so twisted, it started twirling. I was spinning around in the middle of nowhere, and the people on the top were going nuts. But it didn't bother me. I managed to photograph a series of ten-foot sections, from the top to the bottom of each head, so we could make rear projections for the movie. Later, I became known as, "The Man on Lincoln's Nose" -- they even put the image on my 95th birthday cake.

Oh, no. Happy birthday, man. I have an American agent who is the spitting image of this. Really truly the same shape head and, it has to be said, the buttocks.

And I'm giving this to him because there's no way I would be in America at all ever on a plane, if it wasn't for him. So, Brian Swardstrom, I'm giving this to you. And Tony Gilroy walks on water, it's entirely official as far as I'm concerned, and Jen Fox and Steve Samuels, our incredible producers.

And Sydney Pollack, and George Clooney, you know, the seriousness and the dedication to your art, seeing you climb into that rubber bat suit from "Batman & Robin," the one with the nipples, every morning under your costume, on the set, off the set, hanging upside-down at lunch, you rock, man.

Thank you, thank you, thank you

Eazy, Monday, 25 February 2008 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

I like that at the very moment No Country confirmed Morbs' whole theory about the Oscars being all about arty bloody guy movies, the producer gets up and calls his boyfriend "Honey."

Eric H., Monday, 25 February 2008 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

So, like half the recent clips searchable under Oscars on YouTube are of Miley Cyrus.

Eric H., Monday, 25 February 2008 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

i didn't know that either eazy, just remember thinking he was good.

bourne sweeping all unimportant categories yahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
haha this was the most exciting part of the whole night to me. i clapped and yaayed and made booya-style comments

i have no idea how i managed to get my sickass self out of the house. the oscars have power, helpless against it, all logic gone. also there were chips and weed.

rrrobyn, Monday, 25 February 2008 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

i got myself involved :/

rrrobyn, Monday, 25 February 2008 05:43 (eighteen years ago)

fuck you comcast dvr for shutting off at the scheduled end of this mess and making me miss cohens and best picture and best actor, but oh well, this whole thing was boring and awful except for glen hansard. diablo cody should stop dressing at the stripper store.

akm, Monday, 25 February 2008 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

I think Tilda Swinton showed Diablo Cody how a true renegade would dress and act at the podium.

Nicole, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

No Country lost Best Editing = very curious.

Not so weird. Bourne Ultimatum won the ACE (editors' guild) award.

jaymc, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

What a fucking snooze. When the only surprises are visual FX and which Iraq-war film won doc feature....

sole highlight: Hitchcock's production designer

Dr Morbius, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

I thought that NCFOM would've won at least one of the three that Bourne took, though. If not editing, then one of the two sound awards.

jaymc, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

the producer gets up and calls his boyfriend "Honey."

yeah, I'd forgotten Scott Rudin was gay, if I ever knew it.
I'm sure some gay guy manned the shears for the Chigurh haircut.

Elizabeth II for costumes SUCH an obvious call in retrospect. Most distant era always has the advantage.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

god, musical theater is weird

My friend, none of the shit on that stage was musical theatre. KILL BEST SONG!

Sweeney Todd art direc & Taxi to the Dark Side made me happen. My, it would've been awkward if the Baghdad soldiers had presented the our-troops-torture award.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

thanks everyone - this thread has helped me regain the ground i lost by er forgetting the oscars were on! and i suspect it's a lot more fun to read than the awards were to watch.

CharlieNo4, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

humanity (hahaha) in all of us

OK THIS WAS GREAT, JACK!

Dr Morbius, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

it sounded so sinister when he said it

latebloomer, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

then again, it's jack nicholson

latebloomer, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

I also like the way the assholes stuck Sembene, Bergman and Antonioni in the middle of the obit montage so it wouldn't (they hoped) look ludicrous to end with Heath Ledger.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

not having seen it, how come no one's mentioning teh bits that vereyone else seems to be mentioning - the mad ginger lady's speech and day lewis kneeling to be knighted.

also did heath ledger win the dead montage challenge? or were they chronological? is that the word?

pisces, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

Spare a thought for Kevin O'Connell - twenty nominations and no win, poor guy.

as somebody mentioned upthread, they totally snubbed brad renfro

latebloomer, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

The obits were 'randomly' ordered so people who have only seen films since Jaws didn't hafta worry about who the great directors were.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

The applause for Bergman was surprisingly enthusiastic.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

Dr Morbius, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

I think people clapped the most for Jack Valenti, which was gross.

Nicole, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

Elizabeth II for costumes SUCH an obvious call in retrospect

so true^^^^

Mr. Que, Monday, 25 February 2008 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

Also I noticed Marion Cotillard looked a bit like Leah Remini, which was scary. Not because Leah is ugly or anything, but because she is such a crazed Scientologist you get the impression she'd murder you in your sleep to get to clear.

Nicole, Monday, 25 February 2008 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

Her Edith Piaf probably would.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 25 February 2008 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 February 2008 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

also, more formula music bipics to come. that Shaggs thing gets greenlighted, w/ Kidman?

Dr Morbius, Monday, 25 February 2008 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

Cate Blanchett to play Nicole Kidman in upcoming biopic, written by David Thomson.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 25 February 2008 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

kenan, Monday, 25 February 2008 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

I take everything back I said about Michael Clayton. It was worth it to have a winner/speech/gown everyone at work so violently hated.

Eric H., Monday, 25 February 2008 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

haha, you're the only perv who liked the Batman joke? wtf is wrong w/ them co-workers?

btw, to have an all-sexy Best Actor lineup McAVOY was needed.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

I think people clapped the most for Jack Valenti, which was gross.

Sounded to me like Suzanne Pleshette got the most, but yeah, any applause for that asshole is rong. I shouted "hahaha, fuck you, you're dead!" at the tv.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

So, like half the recent clips searchable under Oscars on YouTube are of Miley Cyrus.

Mr. Que, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

I could be wrong because my memory is pretty hazy, but don't they have at least one shameless plug every year? I thought the Get Smart plug was megacheesy but it didn't seem that remarkable.

Nicole, Monday, 25 February 2008 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

All of the songs were pretty brutal. Even the "Once" song was wrestled to the ground and choked dead by the orchestration.

Eric H., Monday, 25 February 2008 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

That Kristen Chenoweth performance was hell. If I take my friends that are fans of hers on faith, she was just all wrong for the song, but I have a sneaking suspicion that she's a chore to listen to in any context.

I actually enjoyed the setpiece with the song in the context of the movie, but they didn't get anything right.

Overheard at my Oscar party, upon Swinton's win:

Woman 1: Is she the token person who shows up drunk to collect her award?
Woman 2: No, no, she's just a rich, eccentric British person! That's what they're all like!
Woman 1: Sorry, I haven't met very many people in that category.

akm, Monday, 25 February 2008 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

she even cried like Hillary.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 25 February 2008 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

Clinton or Swank?

Billy Dods, Monday, 25 February 2008 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

Swank's tough like a man.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 25 February 2008 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

I was surprised DDL's speech didn't rhyme

i was lolling at "you rocked my LIFE!"

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 02:46 (eighteen years ago)

"thank you, life! thank you, love!"

da croupier, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

boo hiss

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno. I guess his was a high-profile death, given his age, but i'm sure there's a handful of behind-the-scenes artists who died last year, didn't make the cut (there's always next life), and had a greater impact on the industry. Is tragically young reason enough?

Cosmo Vitelli, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

otoh, it would have taken 4 or 5 seconds.

Cosmo Vitelli, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

i wonder how the academy even puts their "in memorium" together. Obviously actors are weighted way more heavily than any other profession. Then directors, producers, DP's on down the chain. Basically you better be the world's greatest gaffer if you're gonna make the cut.

Cosmo Vitelli, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:06 (eighteen years ago)

I could sort of see why they might not include Renfro (didn't think he was big enough, known for getting into all sorts of trouble, etc) but then again, it was just a glaringly noticeable omission given that he died less than a week before Ledger, and was around the same age. I don't really see why he shouldn't have made the cut considering that he started acting earlier, was in a few memorable films, and had been noted for being a fine actor despite all his later problems.

Roz, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:27 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i mean it's not the crime of the century and it's mostly its recentness that made it a noticeable omission. but he did some interesting stuff. (onscreen too, ba-dum-bum). it would have been nice to see him.

tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:32 (eighteen years ago)

yeah also apparently, both the BAFTAs and SAG included him in their tributes.

Roz, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:52 (eighteen years ago)

they left whooopi goldberg and steve martin out of the montage of oscar hosts as well, apparently (or so I've heard from EVERYONE ON EARTH WHO WATCHES THE FUCKING VIEW), I think this oscars was probably kind of slapped together.

akm, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 06:57 (eighteen years ago)

None of the montages were comprehensive except for the one for Best Picture. The ones for the acting/directing categories were chronological but sometimes they'd skip five years or so to maintain momentum (as long as it was before 1990, so no one would really notice).

jaymc, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 07:01 (eighteen years ago)

I would have rather had Renfro than Jack Valenti, that's for sure.

Nicole, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I realized how much I hated that guy until he was in the montage though, so perhaps it served a purpose.

Nicole, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, I know that sounds pretty Shakey Mo.

Nicole, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

did Brad Renfro make one decent film besides Bully, aside from his brief role in Ghost World?

Edward Yang's films have been almost impossible to see in America, but Yi Yi did win a bunch of US awards (not an Oscar, characteristically).

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

omg, Jane Russell lives...

http://dlisted.com/node/24073

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

?!? Okay, I am honestly surprised, I had no idea she was still alive.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

I was channel surfing last night and caught a story on Nightline about Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova. Apparently they'd agreed that Hansard would give the speech and then Irglova was only going to say "Thank You." She's also the first person in Oscar history who got cut off that was brought back to speak again.

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

FWIW, I have never heard of Brad Renfro

caek, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

xp: and it was SO worth it...

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

probably was for her!

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

not a good standard.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

Then why do you watch the Oscars at all? To grouse that no one in America remembers that Edward Yang died?

Eric H., Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

You mean man.

(x-post)

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

I actually didn't watch the first 2 hours at all, bcz I was shaking my TV, trying to get a picture!

(EH is grumpy when Slant only gets 16/24)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Although yes, Yang (and Renfro) should have been included. Certainly that montage could have been six seconds longer.

C. Grisso/McCain, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Ummm who put Miley in Valentino?

I'm quite happy to defend Tilda Swinton, she rocks, posh or not. Derek Jarman too.

Fight the real enemy for once, 'Enery.

suzy, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

Gary Busey should get all Ryan Seacrest's jobs. At least for a month.

Kerm, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

I have been out of America too long to cope with Ryan Seacrest at all.

I laughed my ass off when I heard Tilda Swinton's speech. Also, yo, she's SCOTTISH. Of course she's going to give Clooney stick.

Oscartopsy call from my mother was very Mpls-centric and went YAY TEH COENS HOMEBOI RULZE, OMG DIABLO CODY LEOPARD FAT SUIT, HOW SHE WAS EVER STRIPPER?

suzy, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

The Ryan Seacrest red carpet interviews were great, he is so glib and creepy and horrible.

Nicole, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

your mom thinks diablo cody is fat?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Not really. It's my mother's job to harsh on one woman each Oscars (nice, but for inventing the Renee Zellweger Blowjob Face we must all forgive) hence OMG LEOPARD FAT SUIT OH NOES TACKY TAT N BINGO WINGS, NOT FLATTERING.

Fuck, if I had my pick of ALL THIS DIOR the animal print would never be selected.

suzy, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

did she send you a telegram?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

>_<

suzy, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

What did she say about the alien-like Tilda Swinton?

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

Renee Zellweger Blowjob Face

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

NARNIA, duh

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

I should have figured that.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

No offense to her, but I saw a pic where she was next to Marie Cotillard after the awards and let's just say she "pales" in comparison.

What a hottie Marie is though, damn.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

What a hottie Marie is though, damn.

Yes, Best Actress is voted mostly with stiff dicks these days.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

Helen Mirren gets nothing but hard statuettes and bubblegum

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

^^reference that will be totally lost on basically everyone in this thread

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

had I known the actress was a hottie (only knew pics like that) she would have definitely would have made my pool.

da croupier, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

lol, Musto:

10:23 p.m.: It's time for the drippy "Once" song sung by the busker and the immigrant. This Czech should be bounced. So should this entire tuneless category. Can it, Oscar!

10:51 p.m.: What is everyone slipping on onstage? Did one of the pregnant people break water or did Julie Christie sprinkle some slime up there for Cotillard to die on? But here's a real slipup: The Once song wins! The best four notes I ever heard!
