I haven't seen most of what came before about 1960 or so, but none of them (or anything since) can be worse than Crash.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2008 08:28 (eighteen years ago)

'the greatest show on earth' is some bullshit.

WORST CASE SINCE 'THE NEVERENDING STORY'

XPOST

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 25 February 2008 08:53 (eighteen years ago)

cimarron

gershy, Monday, 25 February 2008 08:54 (eighteen years ago)

Out of the one I've seen, I gotta go for Forrest Gump. Gladiator is probably worse on objective terms, but at least it's a harmless romp, whereas FG's politics are totally cringeworthy. Amadeus is very much overrated too.

Tuomas, Monday, 25 February 2008 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

vote for the worst Oscar-winning Best Pictures of all time!!

gershy, Monday, 25 February 2008 09:20 (eighteen years ago)

lotr was at least a good movie in its genre, gladiator and braveheart were some bullshit

latebloomer, Monday, 25 February 2008 09:32 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't seen crash (from what i gather fortunately)

latebloomer, Monday, 25 February 2008 09:32 (eighteen years ago)

crash thread 1000x better than most of these movies

gershy, Monday, 25 February 2008 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

crash easily.

chaki, Monday, 25 February 2008 09:44 (eighteen years ago)

I forgot I was going to do this, but yeah, Crash better win this.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 25 February 2008 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

For some reason I can't start a poll. Someone should do the mirror BEST PICTURE poll.

Eric H., Monday, 25 February 2008 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

haven't seen a lot of these films tbh, including 'crash'.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 25 February 2008 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

If I had managed to successfully avoid Crash, my vote probably would've gone to Rocky.

Eric H., Monday, 25 February 2008 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't seen a lot of these. I might watch them all in order [/blog idea]

The Wayward Johnny B, Monday, 25 February 2008 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 25 February 2008 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

Exactly three years ago.

Eric H., Monday, 25 February 2008 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

"Titanic", easily, though I haven't seen "Crash". Of the oldies, "Gone With The Wind".

"1929 *Broadway Melody, The, NR"

Bastards. "Gold Diggers of Broadway" was robbed!

Pashmina, Monday, 25 February 2008 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

havent seen 'crash'. some of the recent winners were dreadful like 'million dollar baby' and 'a beautiful mind'.

Michael B, Monday, 25 February 2008 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

There's a thread with this discussion.

Most winners are at worst average, expensive, and dull; they've only gotten really offensive in the last 10 years. Calvacade, Gentleman's Agreement, The Greatest Show on Earth are as awful as Crash though.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

Agreed. And the ending. And everything else in the film.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

I would vote for Around the World in 80 days but it's kind of fun watching out for add cameos and stuff. Or it would be if it wasn't seventeen hours too long.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

Not as bad as their reputations suggest: In the Heat of the Night, Driving Miss Daisy.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 25 February 2008 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

I would say, for the recent films, Gump. Pre-1960, of the ones I've seen, Marty was definitely overrated (as was Ernest Borgnine's Best Actor for it), though I don't know if I'd say it sucked.

Joe, Monday, 25 February 2008 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

The ones that have reps for being really bad, like Crash, I've avoided seeing. So it wouldn't really be right to vote.

Nicole, Monday, 25 February 2008 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

Actually this poll reminds me of the hilarious Albom column this weekend:

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Thursday, 28 February 2008 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

Gladiator was totally non-accolade-worthy but wholly entertaining.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 28 February 2008 02:13 (eighteen years ago)

Chicago and Gladiator are 2 of my 3 or 4 favorite of the last 15 years (b.p. winners). Chicago has CZJ looking maybe as hot as anyone has ever looked in the history of cinema; and Gladiator was, yeah entertaining.

you're not manly enough to appreciate true love

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 28 February 2008 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

The fucking in cars scene was the least male-friendly fucking in cars scene ever filmed. It was completely ROMANTIC TRUE WUV AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW bullshit as opposed to raunchy I NEED TO BUST NOW sex.

(xpost! Clearly your conception of manliness is distorted by you being a giant vagina. Also, the movie is the cinematic equivalent of Diet Coke: empty of substance, a little too sickly sweet compared to its counterparts, and obviously manufactured with something that leaves an awful aftertaste.)

HI DERE, Thursday, 28 February 2008 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

i totally wept for hours after titanic:-/

latebloomer, Thursday, 28 February 2008 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

I gotta go with Gump. It's the one movie on the list (I haven't seen Crash, either) that isn't just boring or obvious or treacly or whatever, it actually turns my stomach. It's wrongheaded, foul, and an insult to history, morality, and maybe humankind in general. So so so so BAD.

Hey there, Tuomas -- no reason to hate on Amadeus! It shouldn't have beaten The Killing Fields, I don't think, but it's fine and funny and one of the few movies I loved when I was a kid that still totally holds up.

Re: Patton -- I would not call it "bad" by any stretch. But boy, talk about mixed feelings. Is this movie actually... sentimental about this colossal sunuvabitch? But hey, whatever, Scott is amazing and it's exciting as hell. War is fun!

kenan, Thursday, 28 February 2008 04:53 (eighteen years ago)

(Then again, I walked out of "The Fog of War" kind of grudgingly admiring Robert McNamara, so your stomach for this kind of thing may be really different from mine.)

kenan, Thursday, 28 February 2008 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure there are worse ones on here, but I have a personal boredom against Tom Jones.

i mean in a way crash was worse (and i havent seen a lot of these movies). but crash was impressively bad. like it actually has a lot of potency animating its incredible awfulness. whereas dances is just flaccid.

jhøshea, Thursday, 28 February 2008 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

I caught "Dances" on cable a few months ago. Hadn't seen it since it came out, and didn't really remember it. It's way worse than I remembered. I heckled it (just to myself, no one was around to appreciate my enormous wit).

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Monday, 11 February 2013 19:23 (thirteen years ago)

tbh i can't imagine any pre-1950 nominee being as worthless as anything from the last 20 years; even the worst one is likely to have some redeeming value. like, i've seen 'the great ziegfeld' and it's nothing great, but i'm still glad i saw it, but i'm not glad i saw 'forrest gump' or 'chicago.'

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 11 February 2013 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

When I was much younger, I had trouble reconciling instances of an organization giving a Best ________ award to a creative work that I didn't care for. Like, it made me assume that the problem was mine, that there was something wrong with my tastes. If Crash had won a Best Picture Oscar during that period of my life, I'm pretty sure the cognitive dissonance would have destroyed a portion of my brain.

The Young And The Breastless (Old Lunch), Monday, 11 February 2013 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

The esteemed Academy seems lately to be working from a distinctly different definition of 'Best' than the one with which I'm familiar.

imo Chicago had a tin ear for satire and the songs and dancing were off-the-rack. but there are worse films out there.

The Hours was far worse: empowerment kitsch with Ed Harris wearing a shitty beret

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 11 February 2013 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, my awareness of the Oscars and the destruction of the notion that it could have any real authority on taste happened in the span of two years -- Schindler's List unto Forrest Gump.
