Wehoohahh... It's going to be a busy Saturday.
FYI, Saturday night is the closing of the Bruce Licher/IPR retrospective at Dangerous Curve. Reportedly, the Urinals are going to be playing w/Bruce guesting on guitar.

I'm in for FAP, most likely.
― Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 00:46 (eighteen years ago)
I will be in Hawaii, celebrating the end of my bar exam experience, so no FAP for me.
BTW - MotherFUCK a Cali Bar Exam.

"13. Teriyaki Boyz - Tokyo Drift"
A GREAT song from a GREAT movie, but more night driving...
― Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 02:57 (eighteen years ago)
more for...
(produced by The Neptunes actually)
― Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 03:01 (eighteen years ago)
more night driving...
Too right, Spencer. The night commute is Miracle Mile, through the neon jungle.
Neptunes, really? They really did a good job with that. There is one mix of "Speed" by Atari Teenage Riot from F&F:TD that I like, too.

I never saw this thread. Fare thee well, Remy. We didn't hang out enough but I wish you the very best at your next stop.

Goodbye Los Angeles,
It has been awfully nice living in you. Nearly four years, in Koreatown, Los Feliz, Palms/Mar vista, and a number of shady streets and neighborhoods during a one-month between-apartment squat in the fall of '06.
I will miss my little house near Venice Blvd, ten minutes from the beach and three from Café Brazil, I will miss my roommate J., and his wonderful golden retriever Riley, who has been my constant companion for the past fourteen months. I will miss my work at the W.S., in spite of how things turned out ... I will miss all of my students, especially M, the greatest ten-year-old on the planet, and I hope he will remember me a friend for life. I will miss his family, too, who have been my primary employers, greatest support, and provisional 'home' since June.
I will miss running in Griffith Park, running on Franklin Blvd at nightfall, I will miss hikes at Topanga Canyon. I look forward to the next time I can eat at any of a million favorite Jonathan Gold recommended-restaurants. I will miss the over-full farmers markets (plural), Amoeba runs, sneak-parking at the Getty, caffeinated writing at Stir Crazy, Psychobabble, Alcove, Insomnia, etc., I will miss getting high on the roof of the USC parking center, trolling the pool at the Standard, impromptu parties thrown by house-sitters in the hills of Hollywood and Malibu. I will miss my writing group, the surly bastards at rocket video, I will ...
I'm not gonna bother to list any more.
I will miss my friends B*n, J*a, S*a, W*e, and R*é especially. And my LA ILX friends Ned, Arthur, Keith, Jody, Matt, Adam, Lisa, Vic, Jeff, Nick, Chris, Max, Spencer, and Laura. (And whoever I thoughtlessly neglected to include on this list.) I hope to see you all somewhere in the future, sometime soon.
And now:
Radio Silence. A few days in Big Sur. Decompression, Decontamination. Much love, big city.

i think tony valdez must be editing the saturday edition of fox evening news. There was a feature on the tuskegee airmen getting honored, extensive coverage of the women's antiwar march downtown, a random piece about a mom who lost her son last year due to treachery from one of his so-called friends(they don't know who) and tony himself pleading for someone to step forward, it was very moving. He's kind of a blowhard but Tony Valdez' heart is in the right place, more than i can say from pretty much any other broadcaster on locals. I miss Jess Marlow too.
― tremendoid, Sunday, 9 March 2008 12:34 (eighteen years ago)
I miss Jerry Dunphy too although much of the time it seemed he had but a vague handle on what he was reading. Was he really the model for Ted Baxter? I think I heard that.

I love the Ting Tings and am going to try to catch them at Jensen Rec Center Studios in Echo Park tonight. Has anyone been to that venue?

I am going to Boredoms.
And not as in the usual Adam "yeah I might turn up to that but I probably won't". I paid money for a ticket and everything.
Everyone should go to the London Filmmaker's Co-op screening at Silent Movie Theater beforehand! Warm up for Boredoms with some classic materialist/structural British film!

I went to Mode for dinner once and NOBODY was there. They also didn't have their liquor license (which I think was the main problem). The "downtown social club" was there and they actually gave us some of their wine which kind of saved dinner (the food was pretty good). However, my date immediately asked whether they were a cult and got into it with them which was pretty funny.
― Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:08 (eighteen years ago)
Also, went to Osteria Mozza for my birthday last week. Overhyped and overpriced yet still excellent. Ate more cheese than I usually do in a month. The pastas were really extraordinary and this steak thing made me cry a little bit. I'd recommend just going and getting a seat at the bar. Looking forward to trying the Pizzeria for a slightly more casual experience (also, you could not order the pizza and some of the dishes I'd heard about in the main restaurant).
― Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:12 (eighteen years ago)
xpost, I realize that "NOBODY" seems at odds with the downtown social club, but the club was like 10 people.

If you are really going to Amoeba for Yay record's stuff you should call them. On their web page they list the SF Amoeba as carrying their stuff and they actually don't. If they ever did, they don't restock it.
― svend, Sunday, 16 March 2008 05:39 (eighteen years ago)
semi pro was pretty weak. a few good lines adrift in leftovers of leftovers. i chock it up to the director and writer as opposed to, say, will ferrell needing to do something different. more of a missed opportunity than anything.
― tremendoid, Sunday, 16 March 2008 05:44 (eighteen years ago)
felicity, the drifting is interesting (though it's just demonstration). The main attraction on the April 19th is the Le Mans cars, especially the Audi R10 which won the 24 heures at Le Mans last year (on diesel!).

where does an l.a. ilxor get a haircut? i need someone who understands curly (jewish) hair. considering this place, which is $25 cheaper than the last haircut i got -- in 2004!
yes, it's called goo.

my girlfriend goes to Pomp^2 in eagle rock and really likes it (and they do a good job on her hair). i think cuts are usually like $95, but i cant speak to their comprehension of curly hair--she has fairly wavy hair but straightens it

I don't recommend this one:
Sweeney Todds Barber Shop 4639 Hollywood Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90027 Local (323) 667-9690

I go to some frenchy at Frederic Fekkai. The junior stylists are probably not that much more than $95 (if that) and they probably have student nights too.
Fekkai is soooooo much better than any slightly cheaper place, I always regret trying to scrimp in this area and wind up going back.
p.s. I like your new Docs. :)

Wow, she looks so different there.
If you really want that you should bring a picture. I think the guy I go to is Gérôme. He is a good sport for a Frenchy. I asked him to watch Superbad for how I want my bangs. In return, I think he told me my French was terrible. I kid.

Didn't see this until now, but your primary objective should be La Cabanita. Full stop. http://www.laweekly.com/eat+drink/roundabout/holy-moles/11423/ http://losangeles.citysearch.com/review/250640
After La Cabanita, swing by Frank's Famous for some Dr. Bob's ice cream: http://www.franksfamous.com/

Can we maybe do something that's a little more centrally located? I don't actually have any ideas as to what, but I'd rather do something in the Hollywood area them the Eastside. I don't really have any suggestions, since my activities usually consist of record shopping and going to movies. Are there any good museum exhibits?

Sex(ed) Diaries Visions and Voices Friday, April 4, 2008 : 7:30pm to 9:30pm
University Park Campus Eileen Norris Cinema Theatre
Admission is free. A reception will follow.
“You can’t promise a girl like Julie you’ll be true to her and show up with a case of syphilis.”—Where the Girls Are (1969)
Remember how you learned about sex? The sex-ed films from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and ’00s were often hilarious, sometimes instructive and almost always embarrassing. However, they also reflect changing moral, cultural and political attitudes in the United States. Join us for a screening of these forgotten classics. Learn the dangers of heavy petting. Observe the proper way to impart healthy sexual attitudes to your child without ever mentioning penetration. And note the warning signs of the most dangerous venereal diseases. Then listen to interviews with the USC community about their memories of sex-ed films and the films’ effect (or lack thereof) on the developing teenage psyche.
Following the screening, a panel of experts will explore the social implications of these films. Panelists will include Robert Eberwein, author of Sex Ed: Film, Video and the Framework of Desire; Rick Prelinger, who maintains the largest archive of sex-ed films in the United States; USC cinematic-arts professor Brenda Goodman; and Valerie Schwan from the USC Moving Image Archive.
Organized by Brenda Goodman (Cinematic Arts).
For further information on this event: visionsandvoi✧✧✧@u✧✧.e✧✧

the fresh and easy in eagle rock gets a big thumbs down from me, so far--really weirdly empty and sterile-feeling, and most of the stuff i got just wasnt that great--their fresh tortillas in particular were awful

I love Fresh and Easy!
-- admrl, Friday, January 25, 2008 10:24 AM (2 months ago) Bookmark Link
just went to the hollywood fresh & easy. there were things i liked about it and things i didn't. it didn't feel very welcoming; it kind of reminded me of an updated version of one of those old flourescent-lit pathmark supermarkets. everything was too neat; i wanted to ruffle its feathers a bit. i did like the amount/selection of prepared meals, ready-to-cook produce, etc -- the downside is all the packaging that generates. also: they have restrooms!
-- get bent, Friday, January 25, 2008 5:18 PM (2 months ago) Bookmark Link
The packaging is a downside, but (at least in Eagle Rock) there is plenty of parking and no hassle and I see many other British people there and we wink and nod at each other.
-- admrl, Friday, January 25, 2008 7:30 PM (2 months ago) Bookmark Link
Also many of the things I have had from there are really tasty, and I like that.
-- admrl, Friday, January 25, 2008 7:31 PM (2 months ago) Bookmark Link
The bread is good, for instance.
I really like Fresh & Easy but all of these things are true. It has a certain gareth/Mike Leigh/Thatcher-Major/Job Centre-esqe. socialist charm. The lighting, displays and labeling are comedy ghastly and there is hardly anything to buy! Everyone seems very bummed to be working there.
But what there is to buy is very unique. The meat is like half that of Whole Foods and they have some interesting yet cheaply priced Tesco's seeming house brand foods. In particular, they have the kind of Greek Yogurt like Fage but in different flavors like vanilla, pomegranate and blueberry, which I have never seen anywhere else.
I went to WF for the first time in a while. It's not as good as a restaurant and it's not as cheap as a supermarket. The only thing they had that I wanted was Garoxxta cheese. Not even cherries or Yukon Gold potatoes, which you can even get in C-Town C-Town in the ghetto. It just seems like a place to go when you want to "play grocery-shopping."
― felicity, Wednesday, 9 April 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)
It typically goes Vons for everyday stuff, Pavillions for a slightly better selection of everyday stuff, Trader Joes for cheap food staples, Bristol Farms for high-end meats and impulse beer purchases (they are between my exit off the 110 and home), and Bev Mo for premeditated beverage purchases.
Whole Foods doesn't factor in b/c a) South Pasadena/Southern Pasadena have an embarassment of riches when it comes to food/bev places, and it is overpriced on EVERYTHING.
And they don't have brand name cereals. This is a problem.
― B.L.A.M., Thursday, 10 April 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)
Vons is good and I get United miles for shopping there.
I am going to try the Super King Markets near me. They have filet mignon for $5.49 this week.

Despite my angry posting above, I will say this: busy weekends always make for easy Mondays.
I'd like to propose a FAP. I need to meet some more people in LA. Anyone down for one, say...two weeks from now, location TBD?
― B.L.A.M., Monday, 14 April 2008 16:44 (seventeen years ago)
Sure, I would show up.
― felicity, Monday, 14 April 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)
I'm guessing that the LA ilxors follow this protocol:
1) Someone proposes a FAP, as specifically as possible as to location and date/time. 2) Some haggling ensues. 3) Ned says he'll be there. 4) Said FAP happens.
I'm interested in newish places, or places new to me - this would entail most of LA, but not Pasadena or Glendale. Any ideas from others?
I'm actually thinking Pasadena would work. Metro, easily accesible from all major freeways.
― B.L.A.M., Monday, 14 April 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)
I have only met Tremendoid twice years ago, and would like to congratulate him on his new issue. I have never met BLAM, strgn, max, etc. And I'd like to see if felicity's hottness lives up to its reputation. So plz to keep me in the loop - I'd like to be there.

LOL the if it didn't get a thread it didn't happen principle in effect!
I mentioned it a bit here: San Francisco and what to do in it
But I haven't really given it a formal thread yet. Short version: new job, old friends, still really like LA but a little burned out on the scene after 13 years and ready for a walking neighborhood with real bookstores and such. And girls who read because they like to rather than to either deliver coverage or have something to talk about on Salon Personals dates...

This is a good move for both career and personal reasons that happens to have some lifestyle upside as well - I've been commuting from West Hollywood to more or less the Carson IKEA and back for the past four years, so the notion of living three miles from my office is pretty appealing.

Forecast: Big quake likely in Calif. By ALICIA CHANG, AP Science Writer Mon Apr 14, 6:20 PM ET California faces an almost certain risk of being rocked by a strong earthquake by 2037, scientists said Monday in the first statewide temblor forecast.
New calculations reveal there is a 99.7 percent chance a magnitude 6.7 quake or larger will strike in the next 30 years. The odds of such an event are higher in Southern California than Northern California, 97 percent versus 93 percent.
"It basically guarantees it's going to happen," said Ned Field, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena and lead author of the report.
The 1994 Northridge earthquake under Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley was magnitude 6.7. It killed 72 people, injured more than 9,000 and caused $25 billion in damage in the metropolitan area.
The damage created by an earthquake depends greatly on where it hits. A 7.1 quake — much stronger than Northridge — hit the Mojave Desert in 1999 but caused only a few injuries and no deaths.
California is one of the world's most seismically active regions. More than 300 faults crisscross the state, which sits atop two of Earth's major tectonic plates, the Pacific and North American plates. About 10,000 quakes each year rattle Southern California alone, although most of them are too small to be felt.
The analysis is the first comprehensive effort by the USGS, Southern California Earthquake Center and California Geological Survey to calculate earthquake probabilities for the entire state using newly available data. Previous quake probabilities focused on specific regions and used various methodologies that made it difficult to compare.
For example, a 2003 report found the San Francisco Bay Area faced a 62 percent chance of being struck by a magnitude 6.7 quake by 2032. The new study increased the likelihood slightly to 63 percent by 2037. For the Los Angeles Basin, the probability is higher at 67 percent. There is no past comparison for the Los Angeles area.
Scientists still cannot predict exactly where in the state such a quake will occur or when. But they say the analysis should be a wake-up call for residents to prepare for a natural disaster in earthquake country.
Knowing the likelihood of a strong earthquake is the first step in allowing scientists to draw up hazard maps that show the potential severity of ground shaking in an area. The information can also help with updating building codes and emergency plans and setting earthquake insurance rates.
"A big earthquake can happen tomorrow or it can happen 10 years from now," said Tom Jordan, director of the earthquake center, which is headquartered at the University of Southern California.
Researchers also calculated the statewide probabilities for larger temblors over the same time period. Among their findings: There is a 94 percent chance of a magnitude 7 shock or larger; a 46 percent chance of a magnitude 7.5 and a 4.5 percent chance of a magnitude 8.
The odds are higher that a magnitude 7.5 quake will hit Southern California than Northern California — 37 percent versus 15 percent.
Of all the faults in the state, the southern San Andreas, which runs from Parkfield in central California southeast to the Salton Sea, appears most primed to break, scientists found. There is a 59 percent chance in the next three decades that a Northridge-size quake will occur on the fault compared to 21 percent for the northern section.
The northern San Andreas produced the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, but the southernmost segment has not popped in more than three centuries.
Scientists are also concerned about the Hayward and San Jacinto faults, which have a 31 percent chance of producing a Northridge-size temblor in the next 30 years. The Hayward fault runs through densely populated cities in the San Francisco Bay Area. The San Jacinto fault bisects the fast-growing city of San Bernardino east of Los Angeles.

DAY AFTER DAY (Tommy Reynolds / Stuart Margolin / Jerry Riopelle)
artist: Shango
Day after day, more people come to L.A. Ssh! Don't you tell anybody the whole place is slipping away. Where can we go when there's no San Francisco? Ssh! Better get ready to tie up the boat in Idaho.
Do you know the swim? You better learn quick, Jim. Those who don't know how to swim, better sing the hymn. Tuna at the bowl. Fine fillet o' much soul. Whoo! Whoo! What can we do with a bushel of wet gold?
Where can we go when there's no San Diego? Ssh! Better get ready to tie up the boat in Idaho.

Will totally go to HTDJs on Sat., as I'm mostly a regular there, but missed Mid-City West the last time, and have yet to catch Acid Girls live (I think). Besides, Scarlett's a total sweetheart and her nights are consistently fun in spite of (or because of) the "younger" crowd.

I was raised a Cubs fan, and find there's something romantic about it. They usually have a solid team, a few great players, and might even make it pretty far into the postseason. But even though they'll never win a pennant, the fans are such die-hards that you can't help but root for them. Lovable losers? Perhaps.

I've never had a mint julep!
― admrl, Monday, 21 April 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)
Oh that mint julep at Seven Grand was amazing. It's the chilled metal hunt cup.
The bar at Cliff's Edge can't mix drinks for crap, I sent back a mint julep and a mojito before giving up.
Cliff's Edge in Silverlake is such a Williamsburg-style scam restaurant. Nice room, nice patio, nice fire, really overpriced mediocre food, valet parking, all done on the super cheap. Where else can you charge $35 for a craptastic entree and not even bother to make your plywood ladies' room bathroom stalls closeable? It basically had the production value of Royal Oak bar in Williamsburg.
Just put it in the 'hood, hide the entrance and you can attract a great Hollywood poseur crowd (David Lynch was there with an entourage).
I love that kind of thing. More like this, please.

OK, someone explain to me the Los Angeles City Council thing. it's channel 35 on my tv. You know, where people rap their complaints to the city council and everyone else looks kind of bored.

anyone who's against skyscrapers in the heart of hollywood really needs to move to a new planet. i can't read the article because the l.a. weekly's chicken little conservatism makes me shit blood.

skyscrapers in that part of hollywood would kind of suck imo
― omar little, Monday, 5 May 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)
i suppose nothing can stop skyscrapers from stretching ocean-to-downtown eventually--so much for the view of the hills for anyone a couple miles south of these buildings one day--so all i can do is say "well that's too bad".

Have to pass, sorry!
Meantime, Richard Riordan, food lover and restaurant owner:
What seems to attract Riordan to a restaurant more than anything else -- besides a chance to make money -- is a sense of connection to a community. The Original Pantry and Gladstone's have longtime devoted customers, and his most recent acquisitions were originally Mort's Deli, a Palisades institution for more than 30 years. In fact, he's played with the idea of putting together a group of landmark Los Angeles restaurants for a special co-operative marketing push. Besides the Pantry, he'd include Philippe, Musso and Frank, the Apple Pan, Pacific Dining Car and maybe Nate'n Al, "but their food is terrible. I guess I'd probably pick Langer's before Nate'n Al's."

I need a recommendation for a bar. This is to be a bar with drama, class and sense of occasion for broke grad students who really can't afford such things but want to pretend for a few fleeting moments that they can afford such things after a long and grueling year. In other words, somewhere where you can grab a comfortable seat, drink a well made drink and perhaps even take in a view. Not too much LA attitude, but maybe enough to know that we're in the right place ;)
Any ideas?
Oh we all live Silverlake/Atwater/Highland Park/Koreatown but I don't suppose anyone would mind going further West if it was truly worth it.
― admrl, Monday, 19 May 2008 03:07 (seventeen years ago)

BBC writer takes public transport, marvels at it greatly:
This week I did something which - in nearly 10 years of living in Los Angeles - I have never, ever done before.Cue the drum roll: I travelled to work on the subway.I did it because the figures suggest it is the trend. And (hem hem) being the trend-setter that I am, that is the only excuse I need. You see - like most people here - I would rather stick pins in my eyeballs than hop on a bus or a train. That is not because I am a snob, but because America's second largest city is a sprawl. Fifty-two suburbs in search of a city, so the old saying goes. And the prospect of sitting in grid-locked traffic on one of the labyrinths of freeways, only to pay the equivalent of a small dowry for the right to park, may sound miserable, but given the distances involved, it is still invariably quicker than public transport.Yet certain things have happened here which have prompted some in this car-crazed city to question their betrothal to the internal combustion engine and weigh the possibility of a trial separation.

Fifty-two suburbs in search of a city, so the old saying goes.
It's not 'an old saying', it's a quote from Dorothy Parker and she enumerated seventy-two, not fifty-two suburbs.

I tried Eric Greenspan's restaurant, The Foundry, on Melrose.
Wow. It was superb. Normally I am always bitching about the lack of splurgy-type restaurants in LA, but this was unbelievably good. The food was awesome but perhaps most uniquely in LA, the wait staff TREATS YOU RIGHT. They are attentive but don't smother you.
Our check was actually pretty reasonable compared to someplace like Allen & Delancey in New York (which has similar cuisine).
Anyway, good place to take someone you want to treat and/or impress.

Ray Bradbury visits his favorite bookstore for the last time
Renowned author makes his final visit to the closing L.B. landmark. By Andy Franks, Staff Writer Article Launched: 06/25/2008 10:42:47 PM PDT"Fahrenheit 451" author Ray Bradbury, in wheelchair, visits Acres of Books on Wednesday. The Long Beach landmark has been sold to the city, and the Redevelopment Agency plans to build a mixed-use project on the site.He called it "a labyrinth, a tomb, a catacomb, a maze," before giving it the distinction of "the best walk-through multimedia experience" in the western United States. These were author Ray Bradbury's words to describe Acres of Books, a beloved bookstore in downtown Long Beach that will be closing its doors after nearly seven decades in business, and nearly five decades at its current Long Beach Boulevard.Bradbury returned to the store Wednesday to make his final visit."This is my home," Bradbury said. "I love this place. I love the smell of it."Bradbury, an award-winning author, penned "The Martian Chronicles" and the science-fiction classic "Fahrenheit 451." He said he made his first visit to Acres of Books in 1948 and has visited twice a year for many years.Bradbury wrote about his love of the store in California magazine in 1989 when the first rumors of shutting down the store began to surface. An agreement was finalized in May of this year with owners Phil and Jacqueline Smith, who agreed to sell the 12,000-square-foot lot for about $2.8 million to the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency. The 86-year-old Bradbury sat in a wheelchair before employees, visitors and press in the Acres of Books music lounge where he described the influence books have had on his career. He called libraries "better than schools" and books as good as teachers."You can get a complete education in this bookstore," Bradbury said.Bradbury recalled his own time spent at Acres of Books, making trips from his home in Los Angeles on rainy days to hear the sounds of water beating the tin roof on the store's back warehouse. Authors he remembered spotting on the shelves including John Steinbeck, Edgar Allan Poe and Rudyard Kipling. "It shouldn't be moved, it shouldn't be changed," Bradbury said of Acres. "It's the best bookstore in Long Beach and one of the best bookstores in California."While Bradbury joked that the city should "build around" the site, the property is slated to be part of a proposed mixed-use urban development project bordered by Broadway, Long Beach Boulevard, Third Street and Elm Avenue. It will include commercial space, housing and an art center where local works can be displayed and art-related events can be hosted.City officials have not yet given a groundbreaking date for the project. The Smiths have said they may remain on the property until the end of the year, however the store could shut down as soon as October. The owners are still looking for a new site, but it likely won't be in Long Beach, store manager Raun Yankovich said.Yankovich said both personal and economic circumstances have kept the Smiths from relocating. An "easy fit" is needed, he said, in terms of a new location. The Smiths are looking to buy, not lease, a new location and an 18-month search has not produced anything promising in Long Beach."It's been a struggle, and I just think [Jacqueline Smith] wants to retire," Yankovich said. "I think that she's very conflicted."Yankovich says that while he can't imagine working anywhere else, he's considering a move back into the theater business. Other employees might fall back on college degrees or prior careers, he said.Yankovich encourages people to visit the store, calling it a unique experience you can't get at a retail bookstore or online. The dystopian society Bradbury portrayed in his 1953 novel "Fahrenheit 451" burned its books and punished those who kept them. He has said that the story communicated his love of books, bookstores and libraries and criticized society's disinterest in literature."I would come to this bookstore for revelations about myself," Bradbury said, recalling his visits. "That's what bookstores and libraries are all about."

the lineup kind of is o_O but for about $20 it doesn't seem to bad. It's @ the gibson amphitheater so that's another strike against it

WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME ONE OF RANDY NEWMAN'S NEW SONGS IS CALLED "KOREAN PARENTS"?
http://blogs.laweekly.com/play/live-in-la/randy-newman-largo-72308/
AHAHAHAHAHALOL
Inara George with Van Dyke Parks was amazing but in retrospect I really should have seen him play this socially important new song at Largo.

korean parents got no reason to live
― get bent, Thursday, 24 July 2008 18:53 (seventeen years ago)
Not one of Randy Newman's largest group of fans is here tonight. The Largo is filled with the casually rich, wearing baseball hats and chinos, slightly overweight music execs who made their bones when such a title meant something, movie folks, actors, wives...
no husbands?
― get bent, Thursday, 24 July 2008 18:56 (seventeen years ago)
new largo has been killing it recently, too bad its all fucking $$$$$$
― uh oh I'm having a fantasy, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)
This song is hilarious.
“I don’t know if I’m going to be in a position to defend this one, so I’ll apologize now.”
There’s nothing actually offensive in it,” he said, “except maybe the music, which is stereotypically Asian. But I know some people will be upset."
― felicity, Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:09 (seventeen years ago)
It'll be interesting gauging the UCI reaction to that one.

Tried Garage Pizza at get bent's suggestion last night.

so many new pizza places in the hood. there's that new joint behind that weird looking desert rose restaurant and lucifer's across from citibank, which has yet to open. i am a fan of nick's woodfired pizza on rowena.

garage pizza is fantastic. i haven't had it delivered yet, but the few times i've eaten slices there, they were blistering hot, straight out of the oven. that's the only appropriate temperature for pizza, imo.

Yes, I saw the Fiona Tan installation, "Correction" a few years ago.
http://www.hammer.ucla.edu/exhibitions/82/
It was 360-degree video projections of prisoner and prison guards, just standing there in real time for like 1-hour loops.
Speaking of which, my friend just got back from Tokyo where they went to a "prison hospital" themed bar. You get locked in a cell and you have to bang on the bars with a chained spoon for them to bring you a drink.
― felicity, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

Is there any physical location in Los Angeles where one can buy tickets to sports events and thus avoid the ticketmaster fees? this would be aside from going to the box office at the venue itself. Something like a store or broker or something?

What is there to do in Long Beach? Any of you guys around?
Fingerprints is still an U&K record store and Belmont Shore has lots of good grub. Running around the Queen Mary is always dorky fun - especially if you haven't been on it. I used to live there, but still visit pretty regularly.
― Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 13 September 2008 03:39 (seventeen years ago)
thanks very much. Fingerprints is on the list. May check out the Queen Mary, although having lived in Bristol and Sydney big ships are not such a novelty -- the hotel aspect sounds like good times.
It seems that flights right now are actually cheaper if I get out there before/on NYE. Is there anything specific to do in LA on NYE other than hitting bars and trying to get invited to parties.

students are told REPEATEDLY not to walk alone by themselves when it's late. usually if people are out by themselves at 1 or 2 am it's because they're walking home drunk from a party -- it makes them more vulnerable to crime, and that's what the criminals are counting on.

I figured the university was hardly blind to the possibility. They may well be counting on it in case there's some liability idea that pops up.

as bad as it is....yeah i'm sorry, but you're only an idiot if you get into shouting-match type confrontations with strangers on the street after midnite. it's a big, bad city - what did you expect? unless you're mindless, you can kind of tell who you can and can't yell at over here, and i say that after living here for years and always walking out at night to satisfy my del taco needs

1) i like new wave italo-disco, but i do not yet know my saturday night plans.2) it gets chilly at night. bring a hoodie or something.3) you can take the subway around downtown/the eastside/hollywood, but you've got to take the bus to the westside. the area around the echo & echoplex is very walkable.4) you'll need to eat. there's a restaurant called masa just down the way from the echo that has great chicago-style pizza and sandwiches.

we left PTP early -- i kinda wanted to stick around for ACR and pylon, but i also had a mild headache and the other bands were really loud. medium medium were awesome. vivian girls reminded me of the fabulous stains after they got "good," which isn't necessarily a compliment. my favorite part of the fest was toward the beginning, lazing around on the couches at the back of the echoplex, watching the TG reunion footage.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2005/nov/05/losangeles.unitedstates.onlocationfilminspiredtravel
In 1984, when Los Angeles hosted the Olympics, Nike - an official sponsor - wanted a suitably bombastic song to eulogise the city for its commercials. The company chose Randy Newman's I Love LA: "Everybody's very happy, cos the sun is shining all the time. It's like another perfect day. I love LA."
I started listening to Randy Newman about the same time. I'd walk around London, fast-forwarding my Walkman through I Love LA, because it was my least favourite song on his Los Angeles album, Trouble In Paradise. It sounded like the 80s synth-rock version of a Nuremberg rally: "Rolling down Imperial Highway, a big nasty redhead at my side. Santa Ana winds blowing hot from the north. We were born to ride." Even though I understood Newman's songs were like Agatha Christie novels, full of buried clues to their real meaning, I still didn't give I Love LA a second thought.
Then I flew to Los Angeles, rented a car at LAX airport and immediately found myself driving down one of the streets Newman extols in I Love LA: "Century Boulevard! We love it!" As I looked around, it dawned on me. Century Boulevard is an unexceptional street, full of Burger Kings and car repair shops. And so, Miss Marple-like, I hunted down the other streets Newman lauds in the song: "Santa Monica Boulevard! We love it! Victory Boulevard! We love it! Sixth Street! We love it! We love LA!"
They are all the same. The best word to describe them would be nondescript. It's like a Londoner singing "Kentish Town Road! We love it!" A worse satirist than Newman would have chosen exceptionally ugly streets to make this point. Instead he picked these unremarkable epitomes of the humdrum LA sprawl, which is why, I suspect, Nike had no idea it had inadvertently used such a caustically anti-LA song for its Olympic celebration.
― Vichitravirya_XI, Sunday, 21 December 2008 12:02 (seventeen years ago)
so LA's olympics took place in a nazi-era-looking stadium, and the 84 olympic committee shockingly chose a theme song explicitly about loving the host city released in 83, and therefore the theme song is a "synth-rock version of a Nuremberg rally"? no shocker that a brit wouldn't get an ironic relationship to home turf/ideals, an american idea as old as at least melville, or miss the notion of LA vernacular/sprawled pseudo-equality enough to think that, you know, Kentish Town Road evokes what the notion of cruising even an un-iconic (or un-attractive) but still major street of LA (with the top down, of course) does. of course the song is ironic - it's Randy Newman. i mean "Santa Ana winds blowin' hot from the north"? (does britisher dude get it?) "That town's a little too rugged for you and me"? "Look at that bum over there, man he's down on his knees"? but does he really love the simmering, unequal, somewhat soft-in-the-head place where he was born and has lived and worked nearly his entire life? yeah. enough to make fun of himself on the pop charts for it.
In 2000, Randy Newman hosted a PBS special on Sunset Blvd, in his native Los Angeles. Driving a convertible, he followed the road from the Amtrak train station downtown, through Silver Lake, on past his alma mater UCLA, and finished in Santa Monica.
was this part of the huell howser thing?
― starchild hassam (gabbneb), Sunday, 21 December 2008 12:50 (seventeen years ago)
VENT: I really, really dislike Randy Newman.
― Jouster, Sunday, 21 December 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)
no shocker that a brit wouldn't get an ironic relationship to home turf/ideals
However another Brit (Reyner Banham) gets it entirely. Guardian in haughty missing-the-point non-shocker.

No. Huell wasn't involved with this.

and the 84 olympic committee shockingly chose a theme song explicitly about loving the host city released in 83, and therefore the theme song is a "synth-rock version of a Nuremberg rally"?
Technically incorrect. Newman's song really had nothing to do with the Olympics - the video was a medium MTV hit and was played all the time at Lakers games. Then Nike picked it up for a commercial that featured some of the US Olympic team in it. Anyway, there was a big push to get the LA city council to use Frank Sinatra's "LA Is My Lady" as the official city song. I don't believe the city decided on either one.
― Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Monday, 22 December 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)
Speaking of LA city trivia, here's a Dr. George Fishbeck update. Best part:
But what gets his blood really pumping are the nights that he spends with the LAPD's Volunteer Surveillance Team. Susanne wonders if her husband is getting a little old for stakeouts that can last until 2 or 3 in the morning. But it's clear how much Fischbeck loves it. "We got him. We got him in six minutes," Dr. George chirped of a purse snatcher he radioed in to his police colleagues not long ago. "Well, I mean, the police got him. It's pretty exciting work."
I used to see him a lot at Musso & Franks. Hell, he's probably still going there.

Caek -
Fastest and most cost effective way to get from LAX to Downtown is to take the Flyaway bus to Union Station. Downtown is just a Red Line subway stop away. To get to Silver Lake you can take the Sunset Blvd. bus or the 92 bus (runs up Glendale Blvd)

supershuttle is the name of one and i dont remember the other
Prime Time is the other big one.
Also, if you're going to use the bus/train when you're here, get a day pass ($5 last time I bought one) and you can use the busses, Metro rail trains (not Metro Link, which go farther), and the DASH busses.

yah, supershuttle to my housesit in silverlake is not a problem and I I won't be going far from silverlake for the first few days. Just hitting a couple of bars and getting something to eat, which will be easier with a couple of cab numbers in my pocket. I will also be getting the blue line down to long beach, but i need to get to 7th St/Metro Center at like 5am to pick this up, so figured I would get a cab there. once i have been in town for a few days I may feel happier driving.

Has anyone been to El Prado on W Sunset? http://elpradobar.com/ looks like it could be awesome or horrible.
― caek, Friday, 2 January 2009 23:37 (seventeen years ago)
I like it--I'd put it closer to "awesome" than "horrible"--but more in the category of pop in for a drink rather than a destination unto itself. It's good to see an LA bar with some varied beers on tap. Also, it's way smaller than the pictures on the website suggest, but when I've gone it hasn't been too cramped or anything.
― robotsinlove, Friday, 2 January 2009 23:51 (seventeen years ago)
is there only one table? can you sit at the bar without being in the way?
― caek, Friday, 2 January 2009 23:52 (seventeen years ago)
there is seating at the bar, which is probably preferable, and then a few tables against the wall opposite the bar. though when i've gone i don't think i managed to get a seat at either bar or table - still didn't ruin it or anything.
― robotsinlove, Friday, 2 January 2009 23:56 (seventeen years ago)
I'm going on my own, so I would like to sit at the bar. I will be there early whichever night I go on. I will give it a shot. Good times.
― caek, Saturday, 3 January 2009 00:02 (seventeen years ago)
I'm keen on it not because it looks particularly good or whatever, but because it is a ten minute walk from where I am staying in Echo Park. I don't see a lot else in the area apart from maybe the Red Lion and Cha Cha Lounge to the north and some weird sounding places further east on Sunset.
― caek, Saturday, 3 January 2009 00:04 (seventeen years ago)
Alegria is good but not if you're too drunk from before and wind up throwing up outside leading to the company you're with never talking to you again

"some weird sounding places further east on Sunset."
Little Joy (probably one of these) is actually really great no matter what people on this thread or anywhere else will tell you. I drink solo there all the time! Short Stop is just ok. I don't like The Gold Room. El Prado is ok but very narrow and loud and full of horrible people. I quite like the lounge at Taix on off nights and when there isn't a band playing. Go there!
― admrl, Saturday, 3 January 2009 01:13 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe I got lucky. My food was fine. Service was a little eccentric, but obv. much better than I'm used to in the UK. Main complaint was the price. xp
