So it's a comedy about a bunch of idiot actors trying to make a Vietnam war movie. Robert Downey Jr. plays a "serious actor and recent Oscar-winner" who wants to branch out and decides to play a black guy.

I am genuinely anticipating this! It will be funny.

Frogman Henry, Monday, 10 March 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

Really not enough info in that trailer. The lack of jokes makes me think that they really don't have enough to go around.

As far as the Downey, Jr.-in-blackface thing, why even do that? There aren't enough dumbassed white actors doing blackface to make a point out of satirizing it.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 10 March 2008 00:27 (seventeen years ago)

(I actually haven't seen enough new movies to put money on that last statement, but I would have heard about something like that, right?)

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 10 March 2008 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

i think the lack of jokes in the "teaser" trailer was probably more of a deliberate deadpan move

After pressure from some special needs groups, they've removed all the stuff about Ben Stiller's character's award-winning performance as a mentally retarded man that they were highlighting in the trailers (and they took down the fake site for the fake movie, which was pretty funny) - and apparently they're considering removing it from the film.

Was that the bit w/ the parka and the baby seals / pandas?

David R., Thursday, 7 August 2008 12:38 (seventeen years ago)

No, it's the bit in the trailer that shows scenes from a fake film called "Simple Jack," where Stiller's sort of 'retarded up' and speaking in a "duh" voice. The idea was obviously to parody the Academy's tendency to reward actors in those types of roles, but I think Stiller and Co. were *really* enjoying making the point!

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:01 (seventeen years ago)

http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/images/simplejack.jpg

From NY Mag:

Disability-issues blogger Patricia Bauer reported this weekend that DreamWorks has agreed to meet with advocates about their concerns over Tropic Thunder and its subplot in which actor Tug Speedman (Ben Stiller) makes a blatant Oscar move in the form of Simple Jack, a movie in which he plays a bucktoothed dolt. We tend to read the subplot as a fairly funny take on I Am Sam, Radio, and other head-slapping movies in which actors ham-handedly portray the developmentally disabled. Then again, we don't have disabled kids, so we're not quite as sensitive to the tagline on Simple Jack's "poster," "Once upon a time … there was a retard." (We do wish they'd used a fake tagline that was actually funny, though.)

Will DreamWorks do anything in response to these meetings, or will the studio — as one commenter darkly speculates on Bauer's blog — "pretend to listen … to get an idea of the arguments that they will have to get their PR department to respond to"?

Surprisingly, DreamWorks already seems to be acting, since as of this morning, the once-elaborate spoof promotional Website for Simple Jack has totally disappeared.

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:05 (seventeen years ago)

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 August 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

well I've seen the movie and this dude hasn't, so I feel qualified to say that the movie definitely takes aim - in a pretty obvious way - at the Academy and at self-important actors, not the handicapped. if you come out of the movie missing that point you're looking to be offended.

it's the same reason they did the Downey blackface shtick - not as a way to lampoon black people, but to poke fun at obsessive method actors.

Simon H., Monday, 11 August 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

What about the movie The Other Sister, somehow I ended up seeing part of that "heartwarming" story but Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi sure didn't get any oscars to my knowledge

I was more offended by the "action star" parts of the trailer where Stiller has the cg pandas strapped to his chest

The Other Sister wasn't nominated for an Oscar but it was nominated for a Razzie.

Advocates for disabled to protest "Tropic Thunder"
Sunday August 10 8:25 PM ET

Groups that advocate for the disabled called on Sunday for a national boycott of the Ben Stiller comedy "Tropic Thunder," citing what they say is its negative portrayal of people with intellectual disabilities.

"We are asking people not to go to the movie and hope to bring a consciousness to people about using derogatory words about this population," said Peter Wheeler, spokesman for Special Olympics, one of 22 disability groups nationwide protesting the satire.

The film, directed by Stiller, will be released on Wednesday by Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures and its DreamWorks unit.

The groups plan to picket the movie's premiere on Monday evening in Los Angeles's Westwood community.

"That will be the start of a nationwide protest," said Wheeler. "We will continue to be vocal about the destructive effect of this film."

He said the groups are particularly offended by the film's repeated use of the word "retard" regarding a character, Simple Jack, played by Stiller in a subplot about an actor.

Representatives of the Special Olympics, the Arc of the United States, the National Down Syndrome Congress, the American Association of People with Disabilities and other groups met with studio executives last week to discuss the film, but DreamWorks did not make any changes.

Peter Berns, executive director the Arc, said in a memo the groups presented various ideas to the studio, from requesting an apology to fixing the film before its release, to producing a national educational campaign.

Chip Sullivan, a spokesman for DreamWorks said: "We have had productive discussions with representatives of disability advocacy organizations and look forward to working with them closely in the future. However no changes or cuts to the film will be made...

"'Tropic Thunder' is an R-rated comedy that satirizes Hollywood and its excesses, and makes its point by featuring inappropriate and over-the top characters in ridiculous situations. The film is in no way meant to disparage or harm the image of individuals with disabilities," he said.

The film also features Robert Downey Jr. as a white actor who changes his skin color to play a black soldier.

Sullivan said that prior to the meetings, DreamWorks had taken down an online promotion, removing references to Simple Jack it felt could appear offensive when taken out of context.

The film was shown in more than 250 promotional screenings around the country since April.

While I am disappointed that we were not consulted in the same manner as other minority groups depicted in the film and that there are 17 mentions of the "R-word" with one mention of the "N-word," I am grateful to Ms. Snider for listening to the coalition and for taking steps to eliminate some of the film's most offensive marketing elements.

Of course, wouldn't see Al Sharpton protesting a cinematic portrayal of a bigot using the N word…

Now, however, is the time to raise our voices against "Tropic Thunder" and the harm it is sure to visit on people with intellectual disabilities.

Local NBC affiliated showed an actual in-person protest yesterday at one of the local suburban theater megaplexes. There were, like, five people total. The best part was the "The R-Word is Hate Speech" signs.

Coverage on their website offer roffles with the closing line:

BROOKLYN--There is a storm brewing over the newly released movie Tropic Thunder

The movie starring Ben Stiller and Jack Black is a comedy action adventure.

It spoofs war and many different groups in society.

Advocates for the mentally disabled were protesting in Brooklyn.

18 times the movie makes fun of the mentally challenged and this group says Tropic Thunder gets a cold reception from them.

Cindy Norwood from The Arc of Greater Cleveland says, " when they think that that is acceptable to call somebody the r word in a deragotory way that just keeps it going in a negative fashion."

The "R" word she is referring to is "retard" or "retarded".

And she says that word should be banned from society.

She says, "its hurtful to folks who are mentally challenged".

Her daughter Jessica agrees.

She has downs syndrome and has experienced prejudice before.

Jessica says, "it really hurts peoples feelings."

The group protested and handed out fliers Wednesday night, the same night the movie opened nationwide.

Tropic Thunder is getting good reviews.

Also, the on-scene reporter called it "Tropical Thunderstorm" on the air lol.

so by her logic, she would now represent "the association for citizens"

this sounds like some communist plot to make us all retarded

really worth seeing in a theatre (looks pretty fucking beautiful), and amid a crowd.

fake trailer at the beginning for "Satan's Alley" starring Kirk Lazarus=A+

latebloomer, Saturday, 16 August 2008 23:59 (seventeen years ago)

Fake trailers were the best part, I thought -- very reminiscent of the Ben Stiller Show, as far as the satire is in getting the editing, look, etc. just right. Liked Pineapple Express more.

On Friday night I walked past the AMC 21, busy multiplex in Chicago, and there were about 50 protesters outside. Went with a friend today who pre-Fandango-ed the tickets, or else I would've bought a ticket to another movie to get in.

Eazy, Sunday, 17 August 2008 02:03 (seventeen years ago)

OK, my friend called and wants to see The Dark Knight tomorrow. I'm still going to see something tonight. Pineapple Express vs. Tropic Thunder vs. Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired vs. Encounters at the End of the World

Tape Store, Sunday, 17 August 2008 02:27 (seventeen years ago)

wait, Encounters probably sucks. Scratch that.

David R., Friday, 22 August 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

I am inclined to agree with her. I am slightly shocked by how acceptable it seems to be over here. Although in use in the UK, it doesn't seem to be nearly as prevalent.

Ed, Friday, 22 August 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

I don't get it. All those mentally-handicapped people get to call themselves "retards". How come I can't use that word?

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 22 August 2008 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

But 'spaz' is like the same-ish in the UK, Ed? Do I dig this crazy beat, daddy-o?

Abbott, Friday, 22 August 2008 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

Spaz > Fag in UK.

I was also told as a child that saying "bloody" in England was like saying "fucking" as an adjective.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 22 August 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

I don't like spaz either, but yes it is more common. I've done too much work with children and adults with learning disabilities to be comfortable with any of these terms.

HI DERE, Friday, 22 August 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

I just started training to be a projectionist last week, so I've seen most of this movie 4 times now. I loved it. I'll miss it. It plays on so many stereotypes in a very witty way. Pretending to be black, pretending to be straight, pretending to be "retarded", pretending to be so tough you don't have hands... It's all about thinking yourself to be something you are or aren't. I love that the characters are foolhardy idiots who think they're in pictures but really they're as brave and as tough as anybody. I think it was really funny and well-done.

Maria :D, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 04:41 (seventeen years ago)

I think the citizens of Vietnam have more of a case against this movie than the mentally disabled.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 07:05 (seventeen years ago)

I agree. But doesn't it make fun of "us" (Americans) more than anyone?

http://www.rainofmadness.com/?p=40/

Frauline and Gentlemen,

For too long now, false rumors and innuendo have surrounded this most mysteriousest of films, Tropic Thunder. So today I put and end to the speculation. For the first time in documentary history (not because I can’t find a theater to play it, I totally could, but people that run theaters prefer to live in a comfortable, sanitized bubble of lies), I am publishing my findings, free of charge, on the world wide internet. It is high time the public see the horror that I have seen.

What I have created and given you for free, is a masterpiece that is sure to win not just numerous awards, but also your hearts and minds. The awards will of course mean nothing, and if I become a world renowned celebrity filmmaker, so be it. It is the price I am willing to pay for delivering truth to power.

I would like to thank all the people out there who have sent me countless encouraging emails while I made this film, Dan and Carl. Your words meant so much. And to the rest of you, thank you for taking this journey with me. Please, sit back, buckle your seat harness, and prepare to step through the looking glass. Oh, and be sure to bring an umbrella… because you will no doubt get caught, like I did, not just in the Thunder….but also, its ‘Rain of Madness.’

Downy Jr. is the only reason to see this. Everything from Jack Black after the Farties or whatever spoof comedy movie trailer was unfunny and predictable. Everything from Ben Stiller that had to do with Simple Jack was unfunny and I got really upset when it became a major part of the plot at the end. Pineapple Express was brought up several times in this thread only because it was the other big comedy opening in August '08, I don't think there's any other basis of comparison. PE isn't really a parody, at least not nearly in as strict a sense as TT.

I knew it wasn't the funniest movie ever, but I laughed like it was. I laughed through 90 percent, probably.

Yeah, that's probably true. And one of my earlier memories of pop nostalgia was being thirteen and remembering the time that the Val Kilmer spy parody movie Top Secret! came on the TV at my stepgrandparents' house, where we flew balsa planes on the hills by the golf course.
