I wear scarves half of the year in SF. The weather is changeable and being able to doff a cap or knot a scarf is often the difference between being comfortable or not. What right-minded adult gives a flying fuck whether that's pretentious?

Michael White, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

Scarves are for people who can't 1. grow beards, 2. wear functional, sensibly-designed cold weather clothing, or (mostly) 3. are w/o sisu.

dan m, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

but a tshirt is like saying "its warm enough in here to wear just a tshirt", and the scarf contradicts that by saying "im cold, specifically around my neck". therefore the whole ensemble speaks thus "i am an contradictory* idiot"

i took great care to wear long sleeves today

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, literally - tshirt, sneakers, jeans, sweatshirts, nike winter coat from goodwill. the only real response or thought i give to fashion of any kind is i hate loud/primary colored shirts. and scarves, apparently.

ive never felt awkward about this, ive always regarded it as typical. i think i dress better than some frankly.

haha wait there are people who go around in tshirts + scarves??

gff, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

The real question is why one should care, though. If moonship journey to baja's Palo Alto porkpie and scarf crew are insufferable, they would be even if the fashion changed, and if Jordan and deeznuts have found ways to be comfortable without dressing exactly like me, I most certainly won't gainsay their personal sartorial choices.

it's more of a space thing, in movie theaters and crowds etc. plus i have to do this whole arm flap shoulder hunch thing to get it all settled right, that takes a lot of space. fuck winter, basically.

gff, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

You lose 80% of your heat through your head and neck.

I own at least seven scarves, and one neck gaiter, but can understand why such things might be foreign to Californians or Texans.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

scarves really do keep you warmer! i forgot mine the other day and even with my coat buttoned up around my neck i felt the difference
but yeah, canada
though last time i was in england, in the v early spring, scarf was total necessity too

i think the crux of the problem for me is that you guys are all arguing functionality & i still dont really buy it. its mostly because you think it makes you look good, right? theres definitely wrong with that; ive seen pics of m white & i love the way he dresses but it seems frankly ridiculous for him to be arguing that function not fashion is what primarily dictates that.

not wearing gloves is kind of crazy, although i do that too.

Although women can sometimes get away with wearing scarves indoors as an accessory. I'm wearing mine indoors right now but that's because it's fucking freezing in my office.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

scarves are functional, sensibly-designed cold weather clothing wtf

To me, they're like a band-aid. You wear your nice peacoat or whatever that doesn't have a real collar, so you've got space open around your neck and chin where cold air gets in. You plug up that space with a scarf. If you prefer a scarf, fine, whatever, but a well-designed winter coat obviates the need for such a stopgap.

dan m, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

No, but I'll compare them with results of actual RESEARCH:

MYTH #2 states. “If your feet are cold, cover your head because you can lose up to 75% of your body heat through your head alone.

The problem is that the head is only about 10% of the body surface area. Thus, the head would have to lose about 40 times as much heat per square inch or centimeter compared to the rest of the body.

Gordon had heard this statement one too many times and finally decided to see if this was indeed true. So he took several test subjects, all volunteers, of course, (you have to wonder what problem they caused at the university), wired them to monitor their core temperatures, and discovered that we do indeed lose heat through any exposed part of the body and the amount of heat we lose depends on the amount of exposed surface area. The rate of heat loss is relatively the same for any exposed part of the body not simply the head. You do not lose heat significantly faster through the scalp than any other portion of the body with the same surface area.

It is still a good idea to put on a hat (a hood really - what insulation does a baseball hat have?) if your feet are cold. But what is BUSTED is that there is nothing peculiar or unique about the head. The idea that we lose heat faster through out scalp, because of the constant blood supply to the brain, is simply a myth. (One that I personally have believed for many years.)”

quincie, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

I totally call bullshit on this. It's something your mom told you and you actually believed her but in fact she doesn't know what the fuck she is talking about.

Laurel, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

dan otm, i couldn't wear a scarf with my coat anyway.

Jordan, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

No, the popular warning is based upon the notion that one does not go outside in the winter naked.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

False dichotomy, deez. I could (and did on occasion) wear a bulky but warm rain parka this winter, sometimes with a scarf, too, 'cause it was too rainy and cold to do otherwise but I'd be depressed if couldn't ever dress with some panache but it really is more 'functional' for me to wear a mid-weight coat with a cap I can put in one pocket and a scarf I can unknot then to wear only an overcoat or a parka. It gives me at least 6 heat settings over the course of my day as opposed to two: I can leave them all at the office when it's warm at lunch but chilly in the morning/evening, I can wear just the coat, I can wear the coat and the scarf (adustable, too since I can knot it or not), wear the coat and the cap, or wear all three. There are days in February where it's windy and cold here in the morning and sunny at midday and there are days in July when it's cold and foggy in the morning and cold and foggy and windy at midday.

Michael White, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

While it is v common for people to go outside with only their head and neck and hands exposed.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

brownie, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

Also, who cares the correct percentage, exactly? Covering your head (one of the prime targets of your circulatory system), the exposed arteries of your wrists and neck and your chest and upper back obviously keeps one warmer.

It's weird. I've never worn scarves but it never occurred to me until very recently that they were even considered fruity/indie/Europhilic. I don't know if this is because I'm douchey, Canadian, clueless, or a combination. If anything, I think I associate them more with kids. That said, I tried a scarf once when I was young and couldn't get it to stay wrapped and still be comfortable. Anything less than a thick unpretty winter coat in scarf-worthy weather seems mental to me though. In a perfect world, I'd wear mittens in most cold weather but alas, I cave and make do with gloves unless it's ridiculous out.

Sundar, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

What does it mean for them to be pretentious though? What's the pretence?

(I'm talking about outdoor scarves though. Indoor scarves on men are undoubtedly fruity/indie/Europhilic. None of these are necessarily bad things.)

sundar, honestly i just think its more just a cultural rather than climate thing. to me, wearing a scarf is an attempt to affect an image since virtually no one wears them. but if you see them on guys all the time everyday itd just be thought of as some practical device (i still maintain it is in fact not).

deeznuts, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

Where do you live? Yes, mittens are warmer than any gloves I've found, esp the kind of skinny non-lumberjackish gloves that people don't make fun of. Also, I have Reynaud's syndrome.

Sundar, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

^^^ what i needed to hear

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

interesting thread. scarves can definitely appear pretentious, i think, (just on guys tho), but whoever said it depends on how they're tied is otm. there are ways of tying them that are more bombastic and thus a little pretentious.

i haven't worn a scarf in years, tho i'm not against them. i haven't worn one mainly because wool scarves make my face/neck very itchy and i've had a little difficulty finding a non-wool scarf that i like.

if i were to have one though, i like the way they look when they're not tied, but when they're simply hanging on the neck below one's coat. when you take off your coat, you should take off your scarf, too. just a t-shirt + scarf looks pretentious, i think.

Mark Clemente, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

thing is though, when they are not tied but simply casually hanging around the neck, they operate more as a fashion accessory (b/c it's not keeping you warm when it's not tied up) while appearing more as a practical device (see it's just casually hanging there! i'm not making a big deal of it being there)

Mark Clemente, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

ha those posts were both enlightening for me mark, i didnt realize theyre usually tied. im not really sure i buy that tying them would provide anything more than subtle strangulation to the wearer tho.

tracer by 'untied' i just mean 'a strip of wool wrapped around the neck', which is basically what i thought a scarf was; im not sure where the hell actually tying it comes into effect unless theyre designed to do that, which is apparently so but ive honestly never realized it; its always seemed like theyre just thrown around the neck to me.

Can we compare scarves now?

Deej's scarf sounds verr niiice.

My favorite scarf this winter has been the black one -- just black, nothing precious. (Unless of course you think wearing a scarf at all is precious, etc etc.) Like more than a couple of my favorite articles of clothing, it was a gift from ms. jules, who seems to know what she's doing when she buys men's clothes.

Look! A picture! IIRC, every visible piece of clothing in this picture was a result of her laser-guided internet shopping. :)

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i191/fluxion23/scarfing.jpg

My other fave scarf is kind of a sky blue, nice and bright -- it really pops out of a dour grey-and-black-and-necessary winter getup.

kenan, Thursday, 20 March 2008 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

You lose 80% of your heat through your head and neck.

That's so awesome! For centuries we've been wearing most of our clothes on the wrong part of our body! FUCK ME, tomorrow I am tying my jeans around my neck and my coat around my head. The rest I will neglect clothing cause I don't lose my heat there anyway!

I'm now knitting the Irish Hiking Scarf. It's totally awesome. In a Katia Mexico yarn. It'll probably be neglected cause I don't wear orange/red/pink stuff anyway. :-( But I'll have at least done a cable scarf!!!

I'm also gonna do a scarf in brioche stitch. Awesome stitch cause it's quick and bulky.

That said, knitting scarves can be extremely tedious. :-( Unless I can watch telly whilst doing it.

think all girls are total pussies when it comes to cold weather.

I will print this out as a sticker and plaster this on my non-existent car bumper.
