the ORIGINAL cheesy grunt storyline

surely it resembles earlier polyglot combat movies? iMdb mentions Sands of Iwo Jima...

Alien Resurrection for the Playstation is pretty good too. It's really hard, though (I had to use a cheat code to finish it). Really good late-generation PSone graphics, and they look even better when you use the PS2's smoothing option.

I had an MSX! A bunch of people I knew had them, we all had the Yamaha version, the CX5m, it had a built-in FM synthesizer, and there was a sequencer program you could write music on. I even had the disc-drive to go with it, a single-sided 3 1/2" floppy that cos something like 200 quid (!) The setup was the shit at the time, like owning a mini-fairlight. In retrospect, it was fucking crap. When I got my Atari w/Pro24, and transferred all my shit over, everything sounded so much snappier and tighter, you wouldn't believe it.

Not once did I ever see a game for the machine.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 19 March 2008 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

We didn't quite finish the game, got stuck somewhere near the end where a lot of button pressing was involved in some horrible maze section. And it was about six in the morning.

Weird, I was sure I posted to this yesterday, but my post cearly didn't post.
Anyway, I said: Voted for Ferro, I liked her laconic style (or bad acting).
Lumped with crap dialogue that she somehow managed to make oddly memorable-ish:
"Apparently she saw an alien once", "Coming in for a seven-zero-niner", "Where's the landing beacon? Oh there it is".
^gold.

DavidM, Thursday, 20 March 2008 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

you should see near dark... there's a memorable scene where he gleefully slaughters a bar full of people to the tune of the cramps version of "fever".

Edward III, Thursday, 20 March 2008 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

near dark would make a great double feature with aliens, since bill paxton (hicks), lance henriksen (bishop), and jenette goldstein (vasquez) are all in it playing total opposites of their aliens characters.

Edward III, Thursday, 20 March 2008 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

i don't even eat popcorn!

rrrobyn, Thursday, 20 March 2008 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

you never should have been able to play the alien in any of the games.

ha this gets at the key diff between Alien(s) and The Thing - the crew in Aliens never had to suspect each other - "them" and "us" was always really clear, even if someone became impregnated - for me this makes Aliens just a bit less interesting

vazquez is pretty awesome but i'd rather have yaphet kotto

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 20 March 2008 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

(what i mean by quoting you, Kerm, is that if there were a "Thing" videogame (actually i think there is?) the possibility that you ARE The Thing would always have to be there, and an option to explicitly play as The Thing would seem like a natural thing to have in the game)

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 20 March 2008 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

the crew in Aliens never had to suspect each other

Point taken - but you DO still at least get the fabulously sleazy Burke as played by Paul Reiser in his greatest performance ever. (It was a bad call, Ripley. A bad call.) It's not like a suspenseful, And Then There Were None type thing but it does introduce a little added tension, like, if someone is stupid enough to sell humanity out to the aliens, then these guys are really and truly fucked.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Voted for Hudson btw - I love all these guys, and the small bits of sorta plausible space marine dialogue they all get (except for Where's Bowski?) work really well. On the long ILX "aliens sucks" thread somebody makes a point of celebrating "We've blown the trans axle - you're just grinding metal!" which I think gets at a lot of the appeal of this film (and its underappreciated kinship with the first one).

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

should add a "but" in there between "btw" and "i love."

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

bill paxton (hicks hudson)

for the sake of accuracy and respect

He's Hudson, sir. I'm Hicks.

Sparkle Motion, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

Seems to me, at least, the first one was genuinely suspenseful and NOT FOR EVERYONE , whereas this one went for the wider audience buck. That seems kinda crass to me.

Milton Parker, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

Does Strange Days make it clear why they divorced?

David R., Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

We all went over this in The Abyss.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

i was pretty young when i saw the Abyss, but in my memory it is the most boring movie i have ever seen.

Jordan, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

Strange Days has serious problems but it's also got things you just don't see in most science-fiction films and I've kind of been meaning to see it again

I saw it once, opening night at the Coronet & I remember walking back to my car and realizing the couple in front of me was Kathy Acker & her boyfriend holding hands silently, then he says 'so.... what'd you think' and her yelling loudly 'well it was OKAY'

Milton Parker, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

Kathy Acker OTM

Milton Parker, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

i saw it in nyc and i thought it was totally alright, better than most sci-fi thrillers i've seen since.

omar little, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

strange days and johnny mnemonic are two of the best films made in the last 20 years
the other ones are sneakers, behind enemy lines, and the truman show

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

you left out Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare

sexyDancer, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

no I didn't

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

tom, the 90's sci-fi poll is all you.

Jordan, Thursday, 20 March 2008 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

i love Strange Days, altho tom sizemore gets on my tits in most of the movies he's in.

Ste, Thursday, 20 March 2008 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

i went to the actual "rave" they had for the filming of the party scene at the end. they closed down parts of down town LA and Dee-lite played.

carne asada, Thursday, 20 March 2008 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

whoa that explanation is way more awesome than i thought it wld be

rrrobyn, Saturday, 22 March 2008 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

you DO still at least get the fabulously sleazy Burke as played by Paul Reiser in his greatest performance ever. (It was a bad call, Ripley. A bad call.)

I forgot all about him!! It's true, it is a fantastic performance. I think the key is that Reiser just plays his normal ingratiating self, doesn't try to be evil whatsoever, which of course makes him twice as evil. And you're right that Reiser's character allowed Aliens to borrow a little bit of that "enemy within" paranoia from The Thing. Without which the movie wouldn't have worked, really. Reiser's not an Alien himself, but he's an Alien stooge, working for THEM rather than US -- given the blue collar space marine workplace milieu it feels like an allegory for strike breakers, or management spying, instead of the Thing's more visceral panic over body control.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 22 March 2008 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

xp: science fiction also excels at actual numerical jargon

sexyDancer, Saturday, 22 March 2008 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

xp Alien also had an enemy within character.

DavidM, Saturday, 22 March 2008 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

reiser really gives the ultimate '80s yuppie sleazebag performance

s1ocki, Saturday, 22 March 2008 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

i'd like to see him team up with hart bochner from die hard

s1ocki, Saturday, 22 March 2008 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 30 March 2008 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I went with Apone on an instinctive whim.

The t-shirt link posted upthread is fantastic, but just too pricey. I'd love an OCP t-shirt, but £20 is pretty damn expensive, no?

ILX System, Monday, 31 March 2008 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Surprise upset! I voted Hudson but I can rally behind Vasquez - #1 80s badass tough chick with a gun? She would chew up Linda Hamilton from T2 and spit her out.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 31 March 2008 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

I was gonna say, or the dumbass lieutenant everybody wants to frag, but clearly that's Gorman. In the 'Nam reading, then, Burke is clearly the military-industrial complex sending our boys to die for sleazy capitalist reasons. I realize this is kind of transparently obvious but one thing led to another when I was trying to make the strike-breaker thing work...

Right right, somebody said Aliens, and he thought they meant deleted aliens and signed up.

and what, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

As a rule, you can't lose if, on Aliens threads, when you don't get one of my brilliant jokes, you go and watch the movie again. Worst case scenario, the movie is still awesome but you find out my joke is lame and awkward.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 00:44 (eighteen years ago)

Oh I get it now. Took a couple of reads through. Good effort.

Sparkle Motion, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

As per Sparkle Motion, although my vote didn't win, this is a very reasonable set of results.
