For example, the entire House and a third of the Senate, which I guess just isn't as sexy as 7 months of Rodham v The Saint, since all those cable pundits that 3% of America watches aren't talking about the congressional races.

There will be a fairly large number of Republicans retiring this year, compared to what is usual. Apparently, they don't have much of an appetite for being on the minority end of the stick. The biggest question of all is whether the Dems can put together a 60 seat majority (or working coalition) in the Senate. Too soon to tell much, yet.
Here in Oregon our lone republican senator, Gordon Smith, is somewhat vulnerable, depending on the spillover onto Smith of anger about Bush. Smith has tried to put a bit more distance between himself and Bush, but it may be too little, too late. Won't know much until the Dem primary and we see who's running against Smith.

“There is an attitude that, ‘I better watch out for myself, because nobody else is going to do it,’” the member said. “There are all these different factions out there, everyone is sniping at each other, and we have no real plan. We have a lot of people fighting to be the captain of the lifeboat instead of everybody pulling together.”
...And in a closed-door session at the Capitol, National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole (R-Okla.) told members that the NRCC doesn’t have enough cash to “save them” in November if they don’t raise enough money or run strong campaigns themselves...
“The Republican loss in the special election for Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District last Saturday should be a sharp wake-up call for Republicans,” Gingrich wrote. “Either congressional Republicans are going to chart a bold course of real change or they are going to suffer decisive losses this November.”

The NRCC pumped a shit ton of money into this big loss. Childers isn't what you'd call a liberal, but it's still a finger in the Repub eye.
― Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:07 (eighteen years ago)
I've heard $1.3M and even $2M as the Republican bill. Sounds like Childers campaign was mostly grassroots.
― rev, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:12 (eighteen years ago)
More on the money:
The $1.27 million that the NRCC spent in the heavily Republican district amounted to nearly 20 percent of the committee’s entire cash-on-hand. The committee has now spent more than $3 million to defend three conservative House seats, losing all three of them, and it is ill-equipped financially to compete fully in an ever-widening playing field for November.
20 percent! Good job, guys. Now if Fossella up and resigns...
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 May 2008 15:14 (eighteen years ago)
Judging from the volume of direct-mail campaign crap and number of commercials I've seen for both sides, definitely. (xp) For every one piece of mail from the Childers campaign, there was one from the DNCC, one from the Davis campaign, and nine or ten attack pieces from the RNCC.

This was predictable, I suppose, but it's remarkable to see how strong a relationship there is between today's failed vote on the bailout and the competitive nature of different House races.
Among 38 incumbent congressmen in races rated as "toss-up" or "lean" by Swing State Project, just 8 voted for the bailout as opposed to 30 against: a batting average of .211.
By comparison, the vote among congressmen who don't have as much to worry about was essentially even: 197 for, 198 against.

This race still hasn't gotten national attention. Orange to Blue was designed for races just like this one, where a little money and buzz could go a long way toward helping a second-tier or third-tier campaign graduate to the big time. Saxby Chambliss has raised nearly $11 million, and still has over $4 million on hand. Jim Martin, as of the last report in July, had raised just a little over $1 million, and had just $56,237 on hand.
Guys, we can make a difference in this one. With little money, but with a lot of gumption, energy, and a truly progressive message, Jim Martin has closed to a dead-heat in this race. He is pro-choice, pro-gay rights (supports ENDA and LLEA), a consumer advocate, committed civil libertarian (with ACLU awards for his efforts), opposes FISA telecom immunity, opposes the war in Iraq, is a strong environmentalist, a strong labor guy, a strong supporter of affirmative action, and so on. He is also a Vietnam vet, so perhaps he's destined for a Chambliss Special, but we can get his back. This is the kind of Democrat we can't even get in some Blue states, yet running on an explicitly progressive agenda, has a chance to represent the great state of Georgia while ousting the odious Chambliss at the same time.
― and what, Thursday, 9 October 2008 03:29 (seventeen years ago)
Saxby Chambliss first ran for the Senate in 2002 and won a close race, defeating the Democratic incumbent, Max Cleland, 53 percent to 46 percent. His House career would have likely been over even if he hadn't run for the Senate; his home in Moultrie had been redrawn into the neighboring 1st District, represented by fellow Republican Jack Kingston.
His campaign used the refrain of national defense and security, but drew criticism for television ads that paired images of Cleland and Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, and for questioning the commitment to homeland security of his opponent, a triple amputee and decorated Vietnam veteran.
Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona said of one ad, "It's worse than disgraceful, it's reprehensible;" Republican Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska said the ads were "beyond offensive to me."
― and what, Thursday, 9 October 2008 03:30 (seventeen years ago)
In 2006, under mounting pressure, Chambliss was among several Senate Republicans who returned monetary gifts from convicted fraudster Jack Abramoff.
Chambliss was criticized for remarks he made in Valdosta, Georgia, where he said that they should "turn the sheriff loose and arrest every Muslim that crosses the state line." Chambliss later apologized for the remarks.
― and what, Thursday, 9 October 2008 03:31 (seventeen years ago)
Chambliss is the primary sponsor in the United States Senate for the tax-reform proposal The Fair Tax Act (S. 1025), attracting more cosponsors than any other fundamental tax reform bill introduced.
now now, none here will argue that saxby chambliss is a cunt who deserves to be tossed out on his single-term ass

I sat down and figured out all the judges and school board members and shit tonight. It's always fun reading their little self-provided bios to see the stuff that the schizophrenics and crackpots write.
It's kind of hard to select a judge sometimes, since they don't seek endorsements and they can't make their politics obvious (although I suppose if I were civically responsible I'd be involved enough to know which are the good ones). Sometimes you have to poke around on their websites until you find shit that makes you realize "fuck this guy":
"9. Are you pro-life? I am still not exactly sure how clearly I can answer questions like this without violating the restrictions oninformation for judicial races. I can say my wife Debbie and I have four children and each time I saw theultra-sound it sure looked like our child to me."

Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-Fla.) is finding himself in an October sex scandal, about two years after his GOP predecessor Mark Foley was forced to step down in the wake of his own personal indiscretions.
ABC News is reporting that Mahoney agreed to pay a $121,000 settlement to a former mistress who worked on his Congressional and campaign staff since his 2006 campaign.
The story also reveals that Mahoney promised her a job at the consulting firm that handles his campaign’s media production.
Some of the juicy bits excerpted from the ABC story:
-- A spokesperson for Emanuel, said he confronted Mahoney "upon hearing a rumor" about an affair in 2007 and "told him he was in public life and had a responsibility to act accordingly." Emanuel's spokesperson said he had not had any further contacts with Mahoney on the subject and did not know the woman involved worked on Mahoney's Congressional staff until informed by ABC News.
-- The affair between Mahoney and Allen began, according to the current and former staffers, in 2006 when Mahoney was campaigning for Congress against Foley, promising "a world that is safer, more moral."
At the time, Mahoney's campaign ads featured a picture of him with his wife, Terry, with the line, "Restoring America's Values Begins at Home."
-- The staffers say Mahoney first met Allen at a campaign stop and later arranged for her to work as a volunteer on the campaign. Allen also appeared in a Mahoney campaign television commercial, criticizing his opponent.
Friends of Allen told ABC News that Allen sought to break off the affair when she learned Mahoney was allegedly involved in other extra-marital relationships at the same time.
Her friends say she told them Mahoney threatened that ending the relationship could cost her the job.
"You work at my pleasure," Congressman Mahoney told Allen on a January 20, 2008 telephone call that was recorded and played for Mahoney staffers. ABC News was provided a copy.
This brewing scandal clearly benefits Mahoney's Republican challenger, Tom Rooney. Rooney already was running competitively against Mahoney before the scandal broke, but now it's hard to see how Mahoney survives.
Rooney spokesman Jeff Ostermayer declined to comment on the ABC story.

Meantime:
Darren White and Erik Paulsen were prized Republican recruits, House candidates poised to be the new face of the GOP on Capitol Hill. But as the two head into the homestretch of their campaigns, GOP operatives say they’ll probably have to win — or lose — on their own. The money national Republicans earmarked for White in New Mexico and for Paulsen in Minnesota will likely go instead to protect GOP incumbents who once looked like locks for reelection.GOP Reps. John B. Shadegg of Arizona, Lee Terry of Nebraska, Henry Brown Jr. of South Carolina and Dan Lungren of California are all fighting for their political lives, a reversal of fortunes that has caught even the most astute campaign observers by surprise. It’s an omen and an echo. Just a few weeks before voters went to the polls in 2006, veteran Republicans Gil Gutknecht in Minnesota, Jim Leach in Iowa and Jim Ryun in Kansas suddenly found themselves in tough reelection fights. By the time the party saw what was happening, it was already too late. Unknown challengers booted the lawmakers from office in a landslide election that gave Democrats control of both the House and the Senate. If 2008 looks like 2006, a new wave of veteran Republicans will be out on the streets, and the colleagues they leave behind could find themselves with the smallest minority since the post-Watergate era.
But as the two head into the homestretch of their campaigns, GOP operatives say they’ll probably have to win — or lose — on their own. GOP Reps.
Shadegg's a darling of folks like RedState, so this is amusing to read.

But when you can’t win on the issues, you steal the election with a couple of lies and $1 million worth of mud. And the media reports and Democrat responses to my interview on “Hardball” have been echoing the outright lies of the liberal blogs. Is it really any wonder people are so cynical about politics?

Question: Do you have a position on FISA and government wiretapping?
Jim Martin: The threat of terrorism is real and the government should take all necessary measures to protect us. While I support the overall aims of the recent FISA bill, the inclusion of a provision granting amnesty to telecom providers who permitted the government to listen in on the conversations of Americans without a warrant troubles me. Because I do not believe that the government should craft policy that permits law breaking, I would not have supported the FISA bill that included telecom immunity.

Bachmann panics:
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) has taped an advertisement apologizing for her televised comments calling Barack Obama anti-American, according to a Republican source familiar with her campaign’s decision.Bachmann campaign spokeswoman Michelle Marston said the campaign will be airing a new advertisement this afternoon, but declined to comment specifically on whether Bachmann would be apologizing in the spot.“You’ll just have to wait and see,” Marston said. The move comes as polling, both public and internal, shows Bachmann rapidly losing ground in her reelection bid. A University of Minnesota poll released today shows Bachmann trailing her Democratic opponent, Elwyn Tinklenberg, 45 percent to 43 percent. Those numbers are consistent with an automated SurveyUSA poll showing Bachmann trailing Tinklenberg 47 percent to 44 percent.Tinklenberg has been referencing Bachmann’s comments in his own advertising this week. His latest ad, airing across the district, replays her controversial “Hardball” gaffe.

My congressional district (KS-02) is one the DCCC has been targeting for months, and it's really showing now: watching the NFL and the World Series these last two days, I've seen at least 50 Boyda ads, and none for her opponent, Jenkins. In fact I haven't seen any ads for the Republican this cycle, save yard signs.
The Boyda ads are hilarious though. The main one they're running is a western Kansas sheriff saying that Boyda has kept "dangerous Mexican trucks" off our streets. This is probably some dog whistle that I don't get, and it's a little weird b/c she's a Dem. If I find a youtube of the ad I'll post it.

1. Franken. Hometownism might be a factor but I look forward to a national politician who can tell the world what kind of dweeb Tom Friedman might have been in high school. Norm Coleman has no business farting into Paul Wellstone's old chair.
2. Bachmann raus! My dad's old district, and I wish he'd lived to see this because he hated her God-bothering guts.
3. Stevens. I haven't become a Mudflats obsessive but with this guy in the picture no wonder Sarah Palin was able to run in Alaska as the relatively un-corrupt gubernatorial candidate.

Anchorage may be 40% of Alaska's population, but more than 60% of those absentee ballots would have to be pro-Begich in order for Begich to win, and that's highly unlikely for many reasons.
In the long run, a Stevens win may be "better" for Alaska Dems, since it will highly like throw Sarah "Throw Ted Under The Bus" Palin into that exciting political hockey rink up there in Juneau.
