― jhøshea, Thursday, 17 April 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)
Well shit, the economy polls as the #1 issue but people will vote republican when those policies will (arguably) screw them. It's a democrat talking point, and one I mostly agree with, that republican policies screw the factory workers of the country. Democrats don't get why people would vote republican if the economy's the thing.
Way to bring religion into it..

"I am a Christian" would have played a lot better than "I am a person of faith," Senator Obama, just for future reference
― J0hn D., Thursday, 17 April 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)
Ooh and Obama's running with it! Oddly enough my mostly-liberal but evangelical-type friends (who are typically apolitical because of that, and their relative youth) really like Obama's interest in faith.
― mh, Thursday, 17 April 2008 00:20 (seventeen years ago)
omg Obama's "that's not who she is" line is fucking gold
― J0hn D., Thursday, 17 April 2008 00:20 (seventeen years ago)
lol clinton glaring at the insinuated cycle of abuse
― jhøshea, Thursday, 17 April 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)
J0hn, it does to a certain crowd, but there's a growing interest of people who remember that mixing religion and politics degrade both institutions and I think Obama's pulled people like that to his side -- he has obvious Christian background, but he politically is pretty good at looking who he represents. It's a good angle.

Agreed agreed. I like how "white people are causing pain" and "our governments actions come back on us" are apparently objectionable, but "is America ready for a black president" is not objectionable. Of course someone's still being kept down somewhere if that's even a damn question

In one famous interchange, McCarthy responded to aggressive questioning from the Army's attorney, Joseph Welch. On June 9, 1954, the 30th day of the hearings, Welch challenged Roy Cohn to give the Attorney General McCarthy's list of 130 Communists or subversives in defense plants "before the sun goes down." McCarthy responded, sounding audibly intoxicated, by saying that if Welch was so concerned about persons aiding the Communist Party, he should check on a man in his Boston law office named Fred Fisher, who had once belonged to the National Lawyers Guild (NLG), a group which U.S. Attorney General Herbert Brownell, Jr. had called "the legal mouthpiece of the Communist Party." At the time Brownell was seeking to designate the NLG as a Communist front organization. This was a violation of a pre-hearing agreement not to raise the issue because the designation was being litigated. Welch responded:
"Until this moment, Senator, I think I never gauged your cruelty or recklessness...."
When McCarthy resumed his attack, Welch cut him short:
"Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator.... You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"

Sullivan:
8.40 pm. Now, it's flag-pins! I'm just pointing out that we are now almost halfway through this debate and ABC News has not asked a single policy question. It's pure Rove, sustained and hyped and sustained by Stephanopoulos and Gibson. It's what they know; it's easy; and it will generate ratings. It is not journalism.
8.33 pm. So far, neither Gibson nor Stephanopoulos have asked a single policy-related question. They seem utterly uninterested in foreign or domestic policy. After the past eight years, we have had half an hour with nothing but process questions. Gibson and Stephanopoulos are clearly part of the problem in this election and part of what has to be reformed.

I'm all for keeping candidates on their toes. But this was ridiculous. And now we have affirmative action? let's see not having watched this i offer my punditry:
HILLARY needs a GAME CHANGER and THIS WASN'T IT. she probably SOLIDIFIED HER SUPPORT in pennsylvania, but she didn't land any KNOCKOUT BLOWS. OBAMA did what he could to DEFUSE THE CONTROVERSIES about his PASTOR and his REMARKS IN SAN FRANCISCO, probably enough to STOP THE BLEEDING in the democratic primary, especially looking BEYOND PENNSYLVANIA to the KEY STATES of indiana and north carolina. but those questions will continue to LOOM LARGE for the general election, and HILLARY shows NO SIGNS of LETTING UP HER ATTACKS. meanwhile, JOHN MCCAIN is DRINKING THEIR MILKSHAKES among the kinds of CENTRIST SWING VOTERS who will be CRUCIAL IN NOVEMBER.

I'm no leftwing blogger, but I can only imagine how furious they must be with the debate so far. Nothing on any issues. Just a lot of box-checking on how the candidates will respond to various Republican talking points come the fall. Now I think a lot of those Republican talking points are valid and legitimate. But if I were a "fighting Dem" who thinks all of these topics are despicable distractions from the "real issues," I would find this debate to be nothing but Republican water-carrying.

No Whining About the Media By David Brooks
Three quick points on the Democratic debate tonight: First, Democrats, and especially Obama supporters, are going to jump all over ABC for the choice of topics: too many gaffe questions, not enough policy questions. I understand the complaints, but I thought the questions were excellent. The journalist’s job is to make politicians uncomfortable, to explore evasions, contradictions and vulnerabilities. Almost every question tonight did that. The candidates each looked foolish at times, but that’s their own fault. We may not like it, but issues like Jeremiah Wright, flag lapels and the Tuzla airport will be important in the fall. Remember how George H.W. Bush toured flag factories to expose Michael Dukakis. It’s legitimate to see how the candidates will respond to these sorts of symbolic issues.

Guys, I just went to McCain's site to see what talking points are there in response to what's on the other side of the fence, and they have this poll:
By how much would the Democrats' budget resolution raise America's tax bill? * $0 * $500 million * $200 billion * $500 billion
Is this a poll or a trivia show?

― If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Thursday, 17 April 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)
It is annoying to have to watch from another country but OTOH I would probably have gone mental from the 24/7 news by now plus arguments with more conservative family members. I wish I could get the part of my mom that was happy when O won Iowa because of 'the message it would send the world' to overrule the Wright-related outbursts which are the expression of her racism, in that she holds black people to higher standards than white counterparts, and just vote for the guy, she agrees with him on enough stuff. But bottom line, she thinks his associations mark his inexperience. My sister will vote however my mom does and the son-of-militia bro-in-law is pretty much in the bag for McCain.
So I guess the real question is that are there enough people in the shifting 'younger voter' category plus older more liberal people plus Dems who are over the Clintons plus 90 per cent of black vote plus yada yada to counter the standard GOP crap with sprinkles on?

Reverend Wright youtube clips are like the Dean scream moment of 2008, some loud moment taken out of the original context and put into one where the hyperbole is made to sound "unpatriotic."
Even if the guy meant every word he said in a straight context, what does that mean for the Obama campaign? That he's running for president because he's trying to unseat some white superiority-led conspiracy that keeps black people down and encourages terror?
