Zeno, Saturday, 3 May 2008 18:44 (seventeen years ago)

to be fair a lot of the people here really, really suck

omar little, Saturday, 3 May 2008 18:45 (seventeen years ago)

- lack of decent public transportation from one side of the city to the other
- hollywood/the strip are completely insufferable after 9pm on the weekends
- all the best bars need to be driven to
- the suburbs like to dump their homeless people on skid row in downtown, courtesy of the cops

omar little, Saturday, 3 May 2008 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

^ to all those points from Omar. Especially the first in that list.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 3 May 2008 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

driving to bars is my number 1 complaint

max, Saturday, 3 May 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

driving back from them is mine

remy bean, Saturday, 3 May 2008 18:57 (seventeen years ago)

- amoeba has killed or marginalized every other record store in a twenty mile radius imo
- d-bag councilman garcetti apparently wants to fill hollywood with skyscrapers
- most people involved in that writers strike was totally self-righteous in the worst possible way
- the dj scene here seems to revolve around has-been actors, steve aoki, or random kcrw bores

omar little, Saturday, 3 May 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

was = were

NIMBY-ass residents in the hills who care more about the value of their houses than clearing the adjacent brush that could prevent another 5-10 year major fire disaster for the other 90% who have to evacuate or loss all their shit -- also applicable to other ecological disasters.

Mackro Mackro, Saturday, 3 May 2008 19:05 (seventeen years ago)

freewheel - yes, sometimes they DJ corporate parties at posh venus too.

Mackro Mackro, Saturday, 3 May 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

- villaraigosa is starting to worry me a little
- la weekly is bullshit
- eventually it will probably take herculean efforts to prevent all the cool neighborhoods from turning into miniature versions of the grove

xxpost those kcrw dudes always dj at clubs, especially on the west side it seems. hollywood is for aoki, masterson, samantha ronson, et al

omar little, Saturday, 3 May 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

- the airports
- downey and torrance
- mutually contradictory parking restrictions in hollywood (e.g. NO PARKING M-F 8AM-8PM, EXCEPT T-SU 12-4, NO PARKING 6PM – MIDNIGHT EXCEPT P OR J)

remy bean, Saturday, 3 May 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

those new kcrw ads i see on buses and at bus stops are really, really awful. "look at all these boring attractive people who also like this shitty ben watt remix!"

omar little, Saturday, 3 May 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

- annual brushfires
- nearly getting smeared by dude in a ferrari every time i try to cross the street
- bad gyms

remy bean, Saturday, 3 May 2008 19:09 (seventeen years ago)

dutton's bookstore closing

i've only spent a weekend in LA and the one thing that sucked and made everything else suck was that the girl we were supposed to stay with us "flaked" and never answer her phone so we had to stay in a seedy motel and eat at denny's the whole time.

i hear flakiness is a thing out there.

Seriously, this hideous, outdated, featureless shithole is the first place many foreigners set foot in the USA. The good news is that everything you experience after leaving LAX is a vast improvement.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 4 May 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

We loved LA but here are our main gripes, which did nothing to spoil our good time:

* Those little cardboard cup holder things that go around your crap coffee 'for your safety'.

* Crap coffee

* Having to drive everywhere means you can't drink when you go out!

* Missing your destination by 20,000 buildings, even though you're on the right street, because you leave a digit or two out of the correct address.

* Problems of scale generally.

* I want to make a simple overseas phone call!! Why is that so hard???

You really need a local to help you around, we found. Once we had a chaperone everything went swimmingly.

*

-century city (except for clementine)
-woodland hills/warner center

-people of all races and ethnicities and economic classes can be really pushy here, especially the ones who moved here for self-improvement reasons; as for natives it's probably just embedded in the culture
-people are very very very self-centered
-a lot of people are just fucking oblivious (also see "self-centered")

get bent, Sunday, 4 May 2008 10:00 (seventeen years ago)

all the fucking mohawks. nowhere else have i ever seen so many mohawks.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 4 May 2008 10:05 (seventeen years ago)

-the car culture thing i'm starting to get used to, but it freaks me out a little every time someone asks if i need my parking validated ("no, dearie, my bus driver chauffeur dropped me off")

get bent, Sunday, 4 May 2008 10:08 (seventeen years ago)

for the record i think valet parking is a good thing -- if it helps people shut up about how horrifying it is to find street parking, all the better. this is one idea where market intervention works.

get bent, Sunday, 4 May 2008 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

get bent, Sunday, 4 May 2008 10:17 (seventeen years ago)

this hits the nabisco level of "OTM" in my experience (maybe it's the new yorker's perception of LA people?)

m coleman, Sunday, 4 May 2008 12:10 (seventeen years ago)

L.A. is perfect for people who enjoy a large maze with which to play Urban Scavenger Hunting

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 5 May 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)

The above requires that you own a car and you really enjoy driving in it once you're off the freeways. (most people learn to live with traffic, so it's not really people hating traffic in L.A. as much as how people come up with ways to cope with it.)

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 5 May 2008 21:43 (seventeen years ago)

omar little, Monday, 5 May 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

Also when you meet someone cool, it's not assumed you'll ever see that person again, so it's the L.A. instinct to always grab these people by the arms, exchange info, and tadah instant friends.

huge city where you're not compelled to play well with others in a civic sense, whether via neighborhood, street life, or public transit, but can be demanding when it comes to services - big surprise that people are individualistic or that tension rises when everyone's stuffed into a traffic artery (while remaining compartmentalized).

but are you saying that it makes for a better city if only the privileged few feel free to be 'pushy'?

I hate it that they closed down most of the roads in Griffith Park to deter cruisers and firebugs. I remember when they first shut down the roads in the early 90s. It was after a minor earthquake and it was supposed to be temporary. Anyway, I miss that whole crazy John Rechy scene.

the best pizza in SoCal is (arguably) Nick's Pizza in Costa Mesa - O.C. I think it's the only pizza place I miss from SoCal -- besides the looooong-gone Barrera's in Pacific Palisades. I've been going to Michelangelo's in Silver Lake lately. Pizza is good, standard non-red sauce Italian fare is better.
http://www.michelangelopizzeriaristorante.com/

Of course, like with everything in that part of Silver Lake - their landlord is kicking them out and jacking up the lease: http://eatingla.blogspot.com/2008/01/silver-lakes-michelangelo-pizzeria-has.html

You've got until the end of the month to go.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 6 May 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

Also been going to Prizzi's Piazza on Franklin in Los Feliz relatively often. Their pizza is more Chicago-style, but it's good. Regular dinner menu is better.

Not a big fan of Michelangelo's, which is sad because I live so close. The newly opened Andiamo's is bad too. Nicky D's, however, is great: http://www.nickydspizza.com/

people eating dinner at 6 p.m.

Lord knows I love LA but the early restaurant closings here are BARBARIC.

We went to Costa Alegre in Echo Park last night at 8:45 p.m. and were told it was closed.

WHO CLOSES FOR DINNER AT 8:45?

berri's for pizza - don't say i never did you no favors

Berri's pizza is awesome. And they're usually open 'til like 5am, literally. Probably because it's like an actual coke den (or was, at least, in the early-mid 00's, according to a friend who waited tables there for a year - the stories were insane).

I think I know more than half the people in the LA section.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

On the question of politeness, people in LA were much more polite than in Sydney, or so we found. There was plenty of "Hey how ya doin?". You wouldn't get that level of politeness in Australia. We surmised it was because everyone was aware that everyone else might be carrying a gun.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 22:46 (seventeen years ago)

I see why you dumped her. None of those people can dress.

xpWhere are these people, because my eyes are burning here.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 22:49 (seventeen years ago)

No, that's Eugene. Wrong Korean. :P

felicity, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

The NY guy is wearing a pretty standard global metro 07-08 uniform.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 22:51 (seventeen years ago)

My point exactly.

felicity, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

That's pretty much what most hipsters wear here too. If that picture said LA, I wouldn't think twice.

The main LA pic is from Coachella which was 101 degrees. Summer in NYC brings out some pretty off the wall resort wear if I recall.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

I think the main problem with clothing here is the west side, extreme douchey bedazzled jeans and shirts with like ornate swirly cruicifixes, while wearing snakeskin boots (to work!).

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

max, Thursday, 8 May 2008 04:22 (seventeen years ago)

sometimes i wonder where spencer goes that i don't. and despite a lot of these things actually sucking about la, it seems like it would be pretty easy to make this kind of list about any other city.

things that don't suck about la:

mako on vermont next to skylight and village 3 theaters
rhonda at guatelinda nightclub (on hollywood btwn edgemont and vermont) every other thursday

gregory first world, Friday, 9 May 2008 12:55 (seventeen years ago)

i am basically a homeless man with a house though, so i kind of walk through the city like a ghost and make do with what's around. i have no phone, no car, no job and no family here.

gregory first world, Friday, 9 May 2008 12:56 (seventeen years ago)

I missed saying hi to you at HTDJ's! Did "naus" from here introduce himself?

Spencer Chow, Friday, 9 May 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

Spencer you were right! I went to a DJ sketch night in downtown LA and people were wearing the uniform and spinning Tiga and French synth.

Whew, what a relief.

felicity, Friday, 9 May 2008 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

I don't get it!

Also remember since that was coachella, the person wearing the pink jump suit thing could have actually been from NYC!

Spencer Chow, Friday, 9 May 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

I read in the LA Weekly that Coachella attendance is like 65%+ east coast??

Spencer Chow, Friday, 9 May 2008 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

That, especially if you count Britain as the East Coast. It's such a great crowd.

felicity, Friday, 9 May 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

Britain?

admrl, Friday, 9 May 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

Oh and of course I walk around Coachella wearing hippie clothes that would never get in my suitcase for New York.

Although that man still needs to be hunted down, interrogated, and have his blood drawn.

xp I didn't check passports but there were a lot of English people where we were hanging out.

lax is not a place i would go to dine or look forward to a significant delay, but all those little terminals with like 20 gates are totally painless and efficient in my experience (except the big intl. terminal, that's a bit heathrow)

caek, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, dude. LAX is FAR from high on the list of things to hate about LA.

too many people who don't seem to have/need a job

Good CHRIST, I hate these people. Thankfully, I don't know too many of them, and the ones I do know are actually pretty nice folk, if a little skewed on the concepts of "work night" and "strapped for cash."

I think I hate the passive aggressive "you should just BE out of my way"-ness that a whole ton of people here seem to have. Hard to explain. Related is the seemingly EXTREME offense folk take when you ask them to move. HEY!!! I'm WALKING here!!!!!

I hate the lack of an NFL team. There. I said it.

I hate how expensive it is. Fuck, I pay a LOT to live here.
