She chose her (stupid fake) name via numerology, I believe. Apparently sounding like a Greek brand of drain cleaner is lucky.

"AGYNESS DISHES THE DIRT ON FESTIVAL FASHION
Voted Tatler’s best dressed fashionista, renowned for her wacky, irreverent look, and now a bone fide rock star after collaborating with Five O’ Clock Heroes on their single ‘Who’, model Agyness Deyn is the perfect person to pass on style tips. Chatting to ITV.com/music, she shared her secrets on staying stylish at festivals, and revealed whose celebrity look she admires the most.
Of her top 5 festival essentials, according to Agyness it’s all about the accessories and of course, lashings of red lippy;
“I always take a good pair of wellies with me, always take a really big kaftan raincoat. I just got this new Chanel Union Jack bag that’s a bit chic but it’s British, kinda cool and goes over so you’ve got your hands free. Always a pair of Ray Bans, I love Ray Bans and maybe a red lipstick so you can transfer your outfit from day to evening by whacking on some lipstick. Even though you’re a little bit muddy it will still be a bit chic”.
Agyness awards fashionista brownie points to her favourite style mavens praising everyone from the eclectic Mighty Boosh to Dita von Teese’s glamorous pinup chic:
“Mighty Boosh are always looking amazing, kinda mis-matched, a bit eclectic, kind of very rock ‘n’ roll-y, scarves round their head- a bit Pirates of the Caribbean”
“Ian Brown, very Manchester, you know, with his raincoat on.”
“Sophie Ellis Bextor always looks amazing”
“Dita von Teese - I saw her at Coachella and she had the most amazing outfit, she always looks really cute.
“Har Mar Superstar - Usually he just has shorts on with his top off, crazy hair and big sunglasses”.

She was on the same flight as me when I came back from New York in December, I saw her at the baggage carousel. Annoyingly she still looked gorgeous after a nine hour over-night flight. I was smacked out on sleeping pills and had bits of airline food on my skirt. Bloody models.
― Anna, Wednesday, 11 June 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)
But she doesn't look gorgeous ever
― Tom D., Wednesday, 11 June 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)
She is a gorgeous other girls like, which is a good thing in the eyes of the creatives who use her to sell clothes to us.
You will find no shortage of monarchistsas in the fashion world (Vivienne Westwood and her obsession with orbs strikes me as the obv one) which surprised me at first but then I considered that it's all about selling luxury goods to rich people as per usual and not at all about rejecting or questioning social constructs you don't like, unless you're being paid to.
In Agy's case I guess girl just likes her some royalty kitsch; all accounts of her that emanate from interaction suggest she's a) not stupid and b) nicer than 99.44 per cent of models, who are normally either bitches or rowrbots. However she does seem to suffer from Amazing Major Disease like 99.44 per cent of her peers in fashion at this time.

She's AWFUL I can't stand the fact that she changed her name to AGYNESS DEAN and that every magazine loves her even though she's toooo old to model and she's really not that outstanding. THIS IS A MODEL http://thelongestlistofthelongeststuffatthelongestdomainnameatlonglast.com/images3/modeltrain.JPG I think the whole hype behind her is that she represents British youth even though she...really isn't and she's supposed to be unique looking but again... http://www.ce.cn/life/rwsx/mxss/200703/23/W020070323252435836185.jpg She's unique and doesn't look like a horse!

The NY Times -- or Cintra Wilson, at least -- explains who she is to the Great American Public:
ONCE or twice a decade, it will befall a young lady of supreme good looks to accidentally embody her moment in time. She becomes the visual articulation of our culture’s unspoken hopes and latent desires: a now-ness that contains the hint of a tantalizing future — to wit: we don’t know what’s next, but whatever it is, it looks like her.Back in 1999, young Laura Hollins, a punk rock, fish-and-chips waitress from Greater Manchester, England, won the Face of Rossendale modeling contest. With advice from a friend of her Reiki master mum, Ms. Hollins changed her name to the more numerologically fortuitous Agyness Deyn, and her star dramatically rose. In 2007, Ms. Deyn was named on the cover of Vogue as one of the world’s next supermodels, and she starred in campaigns for, among others, Armani, Mulberry, Reebok, Hugo Boss and Burberry.Off the runway, much ado was made of her personal fashion sense — a cuted-up variation on the old New Wave with little hats, suspenders and neon accessories, and Web sites were dedicated to the fetishization of what Anna Wintour referred to as her “uncompromising hair” — the platinum-bleached crop-top emulated by fans around the world. Even if Ms. Deyn’s income did not make the Forbes Top 15 for supermodel earnings, she was increasingly visible as a tastemaker. In 2008, Glamour magazine named her among seven people “Who Will Change Your Style.”Now, in what seems like a mere handful of seconds after her official supermodeldom was announced, the Internet is abloom with rumors that Ms. Deyn, 26, may abandon the modeling business for greener pastures.I am sitting at Veselka, a cafe near her apartment in the East Village, preparing to ask about these things, when I espy Ms. Deyn through the window stomping down Ninth Street in Converse high-tops (covered in metal studs). Her white hair is a rash of bed-head cowlicks, her jeans peg-legged, her oversize white T-shirt features an album cover for the band Elastica. In short, she is the apotheosis of a feral tween, circa 1983.She shakes my hand with childlike warmth and enthusiasm, placing a pack of Parliaments on the table. Her eyes are the electric blue of snow cones or backlit cough drops; she periodically remembers to open them wider and irradiate me with her inner being.

There are about five fashion people besides Agyness Deyn who rock that Carnaby Street Edie Sedgwick thing so the look is bigger than her, but the clone-clones are her fault. Considering the questions Cintra gave her (if she really did ask them verbatim as suggested) I am not surprised Agy's responses were vague. To get anything out of a model in interview, TRUST ME, you can't hit them with questions that sound like you're a wannabe semiotician. Ten years ago I almost put CW in a book I did but her submission for it was a bit meh and overwrought, so DENIED. This piece isn't much better. I've met AD a couple of times at dinners and suchlike and what marks her out is a complete lack of an attitude problem, plus she is a self-improver type. I'd rather see her do well than someone who behaves like Kate Moss.
― going vogue (suzy), Friday, 10 July 2009 12:06 (sixteen years ago)
Wait, they're blaming that haircut on her? FUnny, coz all the teenagers I know copped it off Laura Marling or Kate Moross.

"farmer tan"?! heh, you can take the boy out of owatonna...
― goole, Friday, 10 July 2009 12:37 (sixteen years ago)
In New York they are blaming it on her. Kate Moross isn't blonde but her look is pretty Agyness-like; the one I'm thinking of is H4nn4 Hanr4, who is definitely a budget tomboy Edie in the same way.
― going vogue (suzy), Friday, 10 July 2009 12:43 (sixteen years ago)
I like AD very much and wish her well.
― Batsman (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 10 July 2009 12:46 (sixteen years ago)
This is the thing: she's just a chilled-out, nice person. Anything else said about her is pure projection, but that's kind of the point of her job.
― going vogue (suzy), Friday, 10 July 2009 12:53 (sixteen years ago)

― Violent In Design (Masonic Boom), Friday, 10 July 2009 13:22 (sixteen years ago)
Worked w/Kate Moross on a magazine proj and she was not always a blonde, used to do that SuperSuper/cholo girl/Cassetteplaya look.
AD's eyes are pretty vivid. My own YEESH at this piece wasn't just about the style of writing but the very poor prioritizing and research LOL NY Times; if CW knew a damned thing about AD's London she wouldn't be wondering about her aspirations.
I was on a shoot on Tuesday for work and photog/beauty folks etc were all like 'the kind of girl who models is changing' because fewer airheads. The models on the set were all around 19 and each of them had some useful form of intelligence.
BTW Nath you'll never get shot of Lily Cole, she's basically an avatar stand-in for one of the world's most powerful fashion editors, who also used to be a red-headed model.
― going vogue (suzy), Friday, 10 July 2009 13:41 (sixteen years ago)

Back to Agy: 'brunch out' was the low for me. Agy's voice is soft, but she has a very pronounced Lancashire accent straight out of a '60s kitchen sink film, and 'brunch' is not the way branch sounds in that neck of the woods. Based on what I do for a living and my knowledge of both parties, it seems like Cintra wanted Agy's feminist or intellectual bona fides straight away and got hit with a wall of WTF, then pouted in print. If you're interviewing anyone, that stuff comes later, when your subject is more relaxed or is pretty sure you're not there to stitch them up. All the folderol about changing her name is silly; for a start it's a play on Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) - before her parents split, family was devoutly Catholic.
― going vogue (suzy), Friday, 10 July 2009 14:30 (sixteen years ago)
^^her pseudonym bothered me much less once i realised the agnus dei connection - which i also realised had been a real tip-of-the-tongue thing anyway.
deyn seems like a nice girl but i can't stand her personal style, not at all. she looks vaguely derelict most of the time. lily cole looks so weird that i can't hate. i wish jourdan dunn was of their stature, she's so gorgeous - suzy, tell us insider gossip about her!

dirty deynana
― velko, Thursday, 20 August 2009 21:48 (sixteen years ago)
it's weird. in the 1st pic, she looks like someone else (not michael jackson, some other cute blond), and in the last, she looks like rebecca romijn.

i can't believe this is the cover of their 'fall fashion' issue. someone needs to review the definition of "fashion" maybe?

Shoreditch must mean something special in this context. Beauty is often particular to place. I think her beauty is conceptual, like that of Linda Evangelista, who did remarkable campaigns for Barneys back in the day.

she's just a face for how millions of people all over the world look, a conservative one at that. it's weird how famous she can be by being a touchstone like that.

hahahaha at least the person dressed up in our MJ tribute this month is a black American (she did it because the shoot was the day of the memorial, LOL models). I'd have thought most September fashion mags would be full of this stuff due to the magic of lead times.
The Tyra/Michelle O 'tribute' must be to spoil the next US Vogue cover.
