ONCE or twice a decade, it will befall a young lady of supreme good looks to accidentally embody her moment in time. She becomes the visual articulation of our culture’s unspoken hopes and latent desires: a now-ness that contains the hint of a tantalizing future — to wit: we don’t know what’s next, but whatever it is, it looks like her.

Back in 1999, young Laura Hollins, a punk rock, fish-and-chips waitress from Greater Manchester, England, won the Face of Rossendale modeling contest. With advice from a friend of her Reiki master mum, Ms. Hollins changed her name to the more numerologically fortuitous Agyness Deyn, and her star dramatically rose. In 2007, Ms. Deyn was named on the cover of Vogue as one of the world’s next supermodels, and she starred in campaigns for, among others, Armani, Mulberry, Reebok, Hugo Boss and Burberry.

Off the runway, much ado was made of her personal fashion sense — a cuted-up variation on the old New Wave with little hats, suspenders and neon accessories, and Web sites were dedicated to the fetishization of what Anna Wintour referred to as her “uncompromising hair” — the platinum-bleached crop-top emulated by fans around the world. Even if Ms. Deyn’s income did not make the Forbes Top 15 for supermodel earnings, she was increasingly visible as a tastemaker. Now, in what seems like a mere handful of seconds after her official supermodeldom was announced, the Internet is abloom with rumors that Ms. Deyn, 26, may abandon the modeling business for greener pastures.

I am sitting at Veselka, a cafe near her apartment in the East Village, preparing to ask about these things, when I espy Ms. Deyn through the window stomping down Ninth Street in Converse high-tops (covered in metal studs). Her white hair is a rash of bed-head cowlicks, her jeans peg-legged, her oversize white T-shirt features an album cover for the band Elastica. In short,she is the apotheosis of a feral tween, circa 1983.

She shakes my hand with childlike warmth and enthusiasm, placing a pack of Parliaments on the table. Her eyes are the electric blue of snow cones or backlit cough drops; she periodically remembers to open them wider and irradiate me with her inner being.

I used to see her all the time while walking to work. I think she's cute and kind of like her style and don't have a great deal of judgment beyond that, which I think means that she successfully does her job -- seeming cute and having good style -- in terms of me as an audience

There are about five fashion people besides Agyness Deyn who rock that Carnaby Street Edie Sedgwick thing so the look is bigger than her, but the clone-clones are her fault. Considering the questions Cintra gave her (if she really did ask them verbatim as suggested) I am not surprised Agy's responses were vague. To get anything out of a model in interview, TRUST ME, you can't hit them with questions that sound like you're a wannabe semiotician. Ten years ago I almost put CW in a book I did but her submission for it was a bit meh and overwrought, so DENIED. This piece isn't much better. I've met AD a couple of times at dinners and suchlike and what marks her out is a complete lack of an attitude problem, plus she is a self-improver type. I'd rather see her do well than someone who behaves like Kate Moss.

Worked w/Kate Moross on a magazine proj and she was not always a blonde, used to do that SuperSuper/cholo girl/Cassetteplaya look.

AD's eyes are pretty vivid. My own YEESH at this piece wasn't just about the style of writing but the very poor prioritizing and research LOL NY Times; if CW knew a damned thing about AD's London she wouldn't be wondering about her aspirations.

I was on a shoot on Tuesday for work and photog/beauty folks etc were all like 'the kind of girl who models is changing' because fewer airheads. The models on the set were all around 19 and each of them had some useful form of intelligence.

BTW Nath you'll never get shot of Lily Cole, she's basically an avatar stand-in for one of the world's most powerful fashion editors, who also used to be a red-headed model.

Back to Agy: 'brunch out' was the low for me. Agy's voice is soft, but she has a very pronounced Lancashire accent straight out of a '60s kitchen sink film, and 'brunch' is not the way branch sounds in that neck of the woods. Based on what I do for a living and my knowledge of both parties, it seems like Cintra wanted Agy's feminist or intellectual bona fides straight away and got hit with a wall of WTF, then pouted in print. If you're interviewing anyone, that stuff comes later, when your subject is more relaxed or is pretty sure you're not there to stitch them up. All the folderol about changing her name is silly; for a start it's a play on Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) - before her parents split, family was devoutly Catholic.

^^her pseudonym bothered me much less once i realised the agnus dei connection - which i also realised had been a real tip-of-the-tongue thing anyway.

deyn seems like a nice girl but i can't stand her personal style, not at all. she looks vaguely derelict most of the time. lily cole looks so weird that i can't hate. i wish jourdan dunn was of their stature, she's so gorgeous - suzy, tell us insider gossip about her!
