What's your favorite type of meal?!?!?!

I will wait, biding my time, until more carrrazy Americans wake up.

Feast, for me, but not daily.

i'm too gluttonous to have a favorite type of meal.

High Tea - in the Scottish sense of being your tea, but slightly earlier, that being the Scottish "tea", which is your dinner, the Scottish dinner being your lunch

prix fixe is a price fix menu - usually a complete 4 or 5 course meal for a set price.

prix fixe = you get a certain number of courses for a certain price, but get to pick all of the different components from a couple of choices.

I should have done this like a tournament bracket.

i quite like a salad bar if it comes with pasta and cheese toast (Hi Sizzler!)

i love old-style salad bars. crumbled hard-boiled egg, radishes, canned beets, orange "french" dressing - mmm.

i am so sick of salad bars because i end up eating from my work cafeteria's about 3 times a week. i have been making myself go out for lunch more, but it's crappy out, so it will most likely be salad bar again.

Probably brunch if I had to choose, but c'mon, all this meals are needed to make life worth living.

Plus I've never been to a clambake and want to go, so let's not rule them out just yet.

i really want to do a clambake, but they're very pricey no matter how you do it. catered: very expensive. diy: still pretty expensive and also really time-consuming.

10 Steps for a Traditional Clambake

1. Dig a pit on the beach, about two feet deep, two feet wide and three feet long.
2. Line the bottom with large stones.
3. Build a wood fire over the stones and keep it burning for about two hours, feeding it when necessary, to heat the rocks. Let the fire burn down to embers, about another two hours.
4. While the fire is winding down, wrap potatoes, littleneck clams, corn on the cob (in husk), onion quarters, mussels and spicy sausages, by group, in cheesecloth or foil.
5. Cover the coals with a thick layer of seaweed, preferably rockweed which has little pockets of sea water, but other seaweeds will work. This provides both protection from direct heat and the required steam.
6. Layer the packets of potatoes, clams, corn, onion, mussels and sausage, and then live lobsters, if desired.
7. Top with another couple inches of seaweed, and if you’re not using rockweed, a couple of quarts of seawater for steaming.
8. Cover the entire pit with a seawater-soaked canvas weighted down with either rocks or sand.
9. Continue your party for another hour or two until all the foods are cooked through.
10. Savor this fabulous summertime feast, served hot with plenty of melted butter and washed down with icy cold beer.

Jaq, at the big FA meetup in Amsterdam last year, the party at our flat was preceded by a rijsttafel for about 20. The only dish I was sure I'd ever had before was the steamed rice. Really fantastic.

picnics are no match for a cookout. i mean, cold cheese sandwiches and wine vs burgers, corn on the cob, and beer?

aside from packaging differences, i think of a box lunch as something that you're given at an event or buy at a deli whereas a bag lunch is brought from home.

Wait, what kind of picnics are you going to, Jordan? Cold cheese sandwiches would suck. Trad picnic fare is cold fried chicken and salads and coolers of sweet tea and possib a cold pasta salad with tuna, and potato salad, deviled eggs, and so on. I'm not going to say it's my favorite food for all time but it's not bad.

Well that is what this tournament is for.

Tbh I don't find regular burgers or dogs very appealing, you know when someone's doing it on the cheap and they bring a case of pre-formed burger patties, possibly frozen, and some Velveeta slices, and a package of Hebrew Nats or whatever and a jar of sweet relish. UUrrrg. The quality has to be higher than that to make me want to cook-out.

I don't think you'll get much resistance on that opinion.

Bad barbecue is better than bad picnic, but good picnic is better than good barbecue.

That's the kind of cook-out people usually do, though. The usual buns are like Wonder Bread mouth-sponges that suck all moisture from the roof of yr mouth, and someone motions you toward the ketchup and says, "EAT UP!"

Last summer I started taking my own burgers and cheese and tomatoes to cook-outs, actually. Totally worth it.

Yes! And the bonus is that people are always inordinately impressed that you've brought/made your own burgers ("Oh wow! You mean you bought ground beef and smushed them into patties yourself!").

Well actually I bought "Angus"-labeled ground beef and mixed it with minced garlic and parsley and formed the patties around mounds of bleu cheese. But close enough!

Technically bbq should only refer to the foodstuff and events that center around it, and not to the general event of cooking burgers on a grill.

Gooblar, it does...I cannot decide between clambake and feast (the one time I've been to an actual FEAST involved langoustines and a turbot for six or so, so I would find ways to make one into the other so as not to suffer a loss).

Laurel, that's a bleu cheese juicy Lucy; sounds like something I might do - over here my function is STAND BACK, AMERICAN MAKES BURGERS, DON'T YOU BRITISHES BOTHER but I have never had a hamburger made with buns from Wonder Bread or Master Bread.

Cookout=burgers, dogs etc. BBQ=barbecued meats (brisket, ribs, chicken) done in regional style. I go with bbq, but am amenable to a nice cookout

I am Bristishes and I made burgers a few weekends ago! They were not half as nom as Laurel's sounds though.

I will prob not adore all the people at the Clinton Hill thing but will appear to make the hostess happy b/c I love her. If there was something else also going on that I could escape to that would be fine.

"Cookout" is awesome UNLESS it is a "wienie/wiener roast," which is an embarrassment to food, grills, public parks, and humans. Plus it means the next day at the park I have to keep my dog from obsessively hunting down and eating bits of hot dog buns & other uncleaned waste.

I went to way too many church potlucks that consisted of dozens of variations on au gratin potatoes (hey it's got cornflakes on it!?!) and gelatin desserts to appreciate the concept of the potluck.

Clambake, gonna have a clambake. Actually, I've never had one but it HAS to be great. Same with rijsttafel .

I also seriously want a real crawfish boil at some point in my life - crawfish, sausage, potatoes, shrimp, whatever all boiled in spicy liquid and dumped on a table to be eaten with melted butter.

jg, I was going to bring that up w/r/t clambakes, actually! Get one clean metal trash can, fill with layers of things in order of cooking time, dump in 1 tonne of Old Bay seasoning, light fire underneath and bury. Or whatever. YES, PLEASE.

Spread newspapers on a trestle table made of the door from the old kitchen and two sawhorses.

High tea is the only answer...crumpets, tea, scones, victoria sponge...you don't need anything else.

So I voted picnic, mostly because there's a unique sort of sense of adventure to that, also picnics so often end in glorious makeouts.

Although picnic barely just > cookout which is also only barely > a really good brunch > pig roast (not listed) > reckless late night munchies (not listed).

i think, to the extent it isn't antiquated at this point, table d'hote would be distinguished from a prix fixe meal in that the latter would refer to an option in addition to an a la carte menu, while the former might describe the only service option available, perhaps in a single seating

(but i'm kinda guessing)

I was enormously tuomased when the roadie came into the bus, while i was doing an interview with modest mouse, and he said it was time for tea. i was like wtf it's about 7 pm, TEA? then i realized he probably meant dinner.

maybe so but unfortunately in the current age banquets are usually held by lunch-ladies & school admins looking to make a buck off of alumni or to celebrate the accomplishments of student athletes
