There's a funny story related to the the lifting of the Vasa ship: just before it was lifted from the sea bottom a few Finnish technical students were visiting Stockholm and pulled a bit of prank. They hired a diver to visit the ship wreckage, so when the ship was finally lifted from the sea bottom, one of the first things visible on the deck was a statue of the Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi. Besides the prank aspect it was a protest for the fact that Swedish officials got Nurmi banned from the 1932 Olympics.

Actually, I think most people in Finland don't know we're not officially a part of Scandinavia either, so it's not like it's a particularly big mistake to call us Scandinavians. And who's to blame, the whole issue is kinda complicated... I mean, culturally and politically we're probably closer to Norway and Sweden and Denmark than any other region in the world, but not everyone knows the "Scandinavian" tag is reserved for linguistics and geography only, so it's kinda understandable many if not most people in here think it's interchangeable with "Nordic".

Aah sorry about that. I know Finland is different in a lot of big cultural and linguistic ways, I just tend to conflate it with the others in terms of "successful liberal European welfare state."

I'm in Roskilde doing an internship for a couple of months. Would love to go to Helsinki, maybe I'll make it over in August or September....
