That friend is awesome!

I fear I have been unduly influenced by Britain's recent habit of voting for whichever one is better looking but I look at McCain and see a member of the undead and think "why are people worried about him beating Obama?" Then I remember the American electorate is probably less flaky than ours.

Maria, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 11:40 (seventeen years ago)

Maria, meet my brother in law, son of Michigan militia type. Amazingly, his dad was military guy so basically his entire salary and therefore the wellbeing of his five kids was down to Federal money coming his way? My mother's direct argument ran along the lines of 'where exactly do you get off, fucker? Oh and yr argument moot until you GET ONE REAL JOB.'

I find that the holders of these opinions have some tragic flaw in the head.

suzy, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 11:45 (seventeen years ago)

trying to argue with tax ppl is even more pointless than trying to argue with fundamentalists, as soon as you hear somebody say "the government has no right to take our money you know" the best strategy is to say "you know, I wonder if the Red Sox will will this pennant"

tracer otm. also how about "the government shouldn't tax me unless it's for purposes i approve, which are the military and like 2 other things but NOT welfare and that shit"...i mean, i would prefer the government not tax me so much for the military, but paying for the parts you approve is not how it works.

Oh dudes please, we do this every month when T1m gets entitled tax-dodge male PMS. Roads? Check. Disaster relief? Check. Terrism? Check.

It's double hilarious because my mom is the other variant of tax whinger, the one that extrapolates the $20k she pays in taxes each year into funding the entire structure of the US government, eg. she is singlehandedly paying for all this welfare for all these cheaters with four kids, getting $500/month Ritalin money per child.

Yeh, they usually think that it'd be much better if everybody fended for himself: if you wanted schools you'd pay for them, and if you wanted rubbish taken away you'd buy sanitation, if you need security he'd buy a gun yawn zzz.

But he can have that any time, it's just that everybody else has pooled together to build schools, hire trashmen and so on, and they also happen to have bought a huge prison system and lotsa guns, and there's lots more of them and if he wants them to acknowledge his rights (like to his property) he needs to play by their rules.

Without the interstates to carry most of the long-haul traffic, the historic highways of yesteryear would be nightmarish, congested death traps.

Aimless, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 17:35 (seventeen years ago)

I know -- I should be on the floor, blubbering about the awesome specialness of this moment, but my trick knee won't let me. It was inevitable that someone other than a middle-age or elderly white man would snag a corporate party nomination; and that Obama spreads it smooth like Sam Cooke laying it down for the ages definitely helps polish the process. You couldn't cast it better. Roaming around the libsphere, I see the predictable gushing, weeping, looking to heaven with beatific gleams. CHANGE is coming, we're breathlessly told. Big CHANGE -- CHANGE that'll burn away your clothes and leave you standing naked in the New Dawn, ready for rebirth. Feh. What can you do? Once the snake waving starts and the tongues channel Babylonian gibberish, all one can do is step outside the tent, take a few belts from a large flask, and hope that the worshippers don't get too excited and descend upon the town, torches raised, hyper-mad expressions on their faces.

guys this is not the yell at each other and call each other names thread. for guidance:

we're discussing Obama, his hat, squirrels, and nuts on this thread. not the clintons or dead bodies or how HilRod is a lesbo

in short, don't make me come back there. i'll turn this car around, i will.

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

Someone ought to just go ahead and invite Perrin to ILX to save Morbs the copy/pasting.

dan m, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

sorry, your thread is talking about my thread. it's fair game.

gabbneb, to be honest i didn't start this thread to call you specifically out--just more of a relief that the entire primaries thread (including my own posts) was coming to an end. didn't mean to start shit with you either, so my apologies if i offended.

i would have posted this in the thread on Ask Chaki but LOLLLLL i am still banned from Ask Chaki

gabbneb, would it make you feel better if i clarified my feelings that pretty much everybody on the primaries threads were a bunch of lunatic assholes shouting loudly into adjoining empty rooms?

just wanted to make sure that you didn't feel singled out or anything.

John Justen, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)
