Request for discussion: ban political threads from ILE?

Yet again today, a difference of opinion has occured with regards to political viewpoints held by an ILX poster, and seemingly another ILXor has been thrown onto the woodpile because of it.

It seems that politics is a far too volatile topic for ILX, and can inflame the most benign poster into acts of aggression and pettiness.

People criticise the revivalists, and rightly so. But politics threads are revived again and again and again, sometimes up to 600 times daily, with people talking over each other and generally ruining the harmonious atmosphere of the site.

Therefore, I think, the second two quarters of 2008 should be "NO POLITICS BIENNIAL". Can we have an RFD for this?

Ha ha

Tom D., Friday, 6 June 2008 11:20 (seventeen years ago)

Passantino, you have a very odd view of ILX.

Ed, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

Your question is somewhat dishonestly phrased, Dom. As you are well aware.

Pashmina, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

It's a request for discussion, Pash, not a "request for discussing the thread itself". We have Ask Chaki for that.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

it's the aggression and pettiness that should be banned, not political debate altogether

braveclub, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, but it was like meta: we offered the meta posters a chance to be unaggressive and non-petty, and they responded with slander and paedo gags. So we killed it. Same as politics threads: they can't behave properly, so we've got to torch the playroom.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

i can totally see tombot banning people for being aggressive.

banriquit, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:28 (seventeen years ago)

who can't behave properly?

braveclub, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:30 (seventeen years ago)

I can see people getting banned for using sockpuppets to start threads intended to annoy the moderators.

HI DERE, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:38 (seventeen years ago)

That's not really a helpful comment, Dan.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:44 (seventeen years ago)

As a piece of general guidance, it could be quite helpful, I think?

Pashmina, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:46 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe oh just maybe Dan does not feel like enabling passive aggression, RIGHT KIDS?

suzy, Friday, 6 June 2008 11:51 (seventeen years ago)

oh god now i see what dom is on about.

turbulent times aboard the good ship ilx. liberal values in abeyance. the steady thump of the marching drum.

the sequence of events was:

- thread call for moronic posts (e.g. by the lower orders, on Other Message Boards)
- c+p of moronic post from THIS BOARD <---- quality revenge zing
- deletion of same and use of a misogynistic oath
- round of applause

oh well, maybe FREEDOM OF SPEECH is just a phase in any civilization.

Don't call it a comeback
I been here for years
Rockin my peers and puttin suckas in fear
Makin the tears rain down like a MON-soon
Listen to the bass go BOOM
Explosion, overpowerin
Over the competition, I'm towerin
Wreckin shop, when I drop these lyrics that'll make you call the cops
Don't you dare stare, you betta move
Don't ever compare
Me to the rest that'll all get sliced and diced
Competition's payin the price

I'm gonna knock you out (HUUUH!!!)
Mama said knock you out (HUUUH!!!)
[REPEAT 4X]

Don't u call this a regular jam
I'm gonna rock this land
I'm gonna take this itty bitty world by storm
And I'm just gettin warm
Just like Muhummad Ali they called him Cassius
Watch me bash this beat like a skull
Cuz u know I had beef wit
Why do u riff with me, the maniac psycho
And when I pull out my jammy get ready cuz it might go
BLAAAAW, how ya like me now?
The river will not allow
U to get with, Mr. Smith, dont riff
Listen to my gear shift
I'm blastin, outlastin
Kinda like Shaft, so u could say I'm shaftin
Old English filled my mind
And I came up with a funky rhyme

I'm gonna knock you out (HUUUH!!!)
Mama said knock you out (HUUUH!!!)
[REPEAT 4X]

Breakdown!!!

Shadow boxin when I heard you on the radio (HUUUH!!!)
I just don't know
What made you forget that I was raw?
But now I got a new tour
I'm goin insane, startin the hurricane, releasin pain
Lettin you know that you can't gain, I maintain
Unless ya say my name
Rippin, killin
Diggin and drillin a hole
Pass the Ol' Gold

I'm gonna knock you out (HUUUH!!!)
Mama said knock you out (HUUUH!!!)
[REPEAT 4X]

Shotgun blasts are heard
When I rip and kill, at WILL
The man of the hour, tower of power, I'll devour
I'm gonna tie you up and let you understand
that I'm not your average man
when I got a jammy in my hand
DAAAAAM!!!!! Oooooohh!!
Listen to the way I slaaaaay, your crew
Damage (UHH) damage (UHH) damage (UHH) damage
Destruction, terror, and mayhem
Pass me a sissy so suckas I'll slay him
Farmers (What!!!) Farmers (What!!!)
I'm ready (we're ready!!!)
I think I'm gonna bomb a town (get down!!)
Don't u neva, eva, pull my lever
Cuz I explode
And my nine is easy to load
I gotta thank God
Cuz he gave me the strength to rock
HARD!! knock you out, mama said knock you out

This all proves my point: people are having much more fun on this thread than they would on a politics thread. Nobody is getting angry, annoyed, or vexed. Nobody has been flamed. This is what ILx should be like, and if anyone can really put forward an argument as to why we should keep having politics threads, then I'd like to hear it.

I'm not a big fan of this much twee but unfortunately doing anything about it would constitute an infringement on people's right to post pictures of bunnies AND would set a dangerous unmoveable precedent undermining all future moderation action so unfortunately I'm just going to have to let this lie. Sorry dudes.

I'm a sucker for nearly any picture of a duck.

if anyone can really put forward an argument as to why we should keep having politics threads, then I'd like to hear it.

1. Any penalty for displaying bad manners on a political thread should be aimed at those who show bad manners, not at everyone who wants to discuss politics. Those who wish to discuss politics and can do so in a polite way should be free to do so and there is no rational purpose in preventing them from doing so.

2. Prior restraint is not just difficult, but ill-conceived. It is easy to propose that "politics" be excluded from ilx, but impossible to define what is to be banned in any kind of sensible manner. Would the ban include any mention of retired political figures like Tony Blair or Margaret Thatcher? What about discussing issues that have a political dimension, like drug use or the death penalty? If a hip-hop artist mentions politics in his lyrics, would it be possible to mention this on ilm without getting banned? It makes no sense.
