"I don't care if you're black, white, purple or green!" I'm sure everyone has heard this in some shape or form in their lives (or SLives) -- but how true is it?
IRL you can't be purple or green, but in SL you can ... but so few are. As a colored avatar with a taste for wacky fashion - I've found that racism in SL is very cut and dry. I won't even bring a RL spin on it because that's a whole post in itself (ie the lack of realistic black skins beyond just being what I would consider a dark 'California' tan) and instead I'll only address what I'm familiar with.
So many folks have said that they dress their avatars in ways they wouldn't dress themselves IRL. I totally understand. Lots of folks say they choose not to be their 'RL' self because that would be boring to them, and I can kinda see that too. But seriously, does dressing your avatar like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany's really give you that aire of individuality and excitement you're seeking? Is that really how you wish you could look?
I understand that if you run a business there are certain social stigmas (for lack of a better word) that go along with that responsibility. Somehow it isn't viewed as 'acceptable' to dress yourself as a seven foot tall Moogle who farts colorful stars (if someone makes that av I gotta have one!) if you plan to have any respect when it comes to customer interaction. The fact of the matter is: in SL you are judged on how you look - down to what color your skin is.
People say "I love my friends for who they are!" but nine times out of ten their friends just look like clones of the person who said that. Its completely understandable that you get in where you fit in (haha!) and people will choose who they want to talk to based up on appearance because hey - if they look like you they probably like the same stuff you do, right?
When will things move beyond appearances? When will it not matter if you have the hottest new skin/hair and matter more on the content of potential conversation? In a social MMO platform such as Second Life - I would think that people would be more socially minded and not so .. well .. small minded.
My avatar is purple. Purple hair, dorky t shirts, knee high socks, tennis shoes, and purple skin. I like how she looks. She's interesting, and in my opinion engaging. But there's a problem: no one else does. Okay so it isn't really a problem because I'm really not into the social scene much these days - but I was once upon a time! Even now I find myself roaming about just to see if there's any good conversation to be had. There really is more to SL than shopping and looped dances.
Over the past year I've done a bit of what I'd call an experiment. I found a couple 'normal' skins that I like to accompany the purple skins that I feel are really 'me'. When I wanted to make a 'quick' friend, I'd wear a normal skin and try to make my outfit match before I visited somewhere. People came up to me to talk, even though the conversation was 'petty'. You know "Wow I love your shoes where'd you get em?" or "Oooh that's a really cool shirt, who made it?" That kind of thing. But I always get the opposite reaction when I'm purple.
I can visit the same sim in 'my' kind of dress and not a soul will talk to me. When this happens I take innitiative. I start out with a simple 'Hi' usually ... which generates little to no response. Oooh back away I'm purple! It might be *gulp* contagious!
As I said earlier, I understand the 'business' end of having to look 'normal'. I've been operating a video business in SL for almost three years now (with the help of my husband Keith/Bebop Vox) and though its always seemed to be okay for HIM to look like a cyborg - I get shoddy treatment from clients when I'm in my purple skin. But once I slap on a CS or ND skin - all is right as rain! Its funny, but at the same time very very sad.
Why is it funny? Its funny to me because I know that the individuals who judge in such a way are in no position to do so. Even if you're a multi millionaire - you have no right to judge another person. Another thing that makes it funny is that big DUH factor of it just being an avatar. But it makes me wonder .. if these people have such a small tolerance for a deviation from the 'norm' here in SL .. what are they like IRL? And suddenly that's when it isn't funny anymore. They really are just being racist because I'm not whatever color they are (which ranges from redhead pale to Tom Jones Tan).
Many people have said "Oh don't be silly! There's no racism in SL!" Then I ask "Why are there so few skin makers that cater to anyone of color (ANY COLOR besides white, tan, and Christmas Turkey Skin). Why am I treated differently when I wear a skin made by Starley or Ambyance than when I wear my beloved Wysteria skin by Munchflower if there is no racism? Since there is no racism then every skin maker should have a rainbow of skin colors - or even have an actual black skin.
I've just come to the conclusion that content creation isn't about creativity at all - its about money. Content creators don't make things that make them happy .. they make things that the droning masses will buy. Sally Skinmaker doesn't care what color you WANT to be, she cares about what color you'll buy when you have a limited choice.

What the fuck? There are thousands upon thousands of people pouring into a town in Louisiana to "protest" (read: play the race card) the punishment for what these 6 kids have done. They (collectively) beat the shit out of a kid at school and even when he was on the deck kept kicking and stomping him almost killing the kid. Now, just hearing this without race being involved, I would say that the 6 kids need to be brought up on serious charges, and as adults since they are 16 and by then you definitely know right from wrong when it comes to kicking someone's ass. Now, I find out that because these 6 kids were black and the kid they almost killed was white, thousands upon thousands of people are pouring into this little town saying that the punishment is excessive. BULLSHIT. Where's Penn and Teller when I need them? I don't care if you're black, white, purple, or green you should be tried as an adult when you do something fucking stupid like that. And GOD FORBID it would've been 6 white kids kicking the shit out of a black kid because you know that that kid would've been tried as an adult and likely sentenced to execution just to show that we're a "fair" court system.
Listen, I'm not racist, nor do I in any way advocate racism, but COME ON PEOPLE. If 6 kids get together and collectively almost murder someone, they should be tried as adults, regardless of race. They should be brought up on felony charges. They said that this stems back to 3 months ago when 3 white students hung nooses in a tree and were only expelled. Let's see... hanging nooses in a tree (which don't get me wrong, is HORRIBLE) vs. stomping a mudhole in some kid's ass (not one of the noose kids, otherwise I might understand)... these are two completely different crimes. They're saying that those 3 kids should've been charged with a hate crime instead of just being expelled from school. While I might agree with you, I HAVE to say that you can't use that flub in the system to justify letting the so-called "Jena 6" get away with attempted murder. It's not a system where you can say, "Well, those 3 white kids just got expelled for hanging nooses in a tree, so our 6 kids now get a pass to kick the shit out of someone, they should just be expelled." It doesn't work like that.
I usually try to steer clear of political issues ESPECIALLY racial political issues, because 90% of the time racial issues are because us white people like to be completely fucking ignorant all over the country. But this time, it's a country full of our African-American friends that are being ignorant. Please people... please.
If you're offended by this blog, I'm not sorry in any way shape or form. If you'd like to argue with me, or debate my points, feel free to message me. If you want to remove me from your friends list or something, go for it. This is how I feel. I have nothing against black people, in fact I hate white people a lot most of the time, and I have a right to say what I think. If you don't like it... eat a dick.

Why does this always have to turn into a racial thing?!? It's terrible that that man was killed and I agree that there should definately be an investigation. But seriously...for a race that fought for so long to get equality, you guys sure like to make race an issue. If you didn't know equality means that everybody is equal and applies to both white people AND BLACK PEOPLE! I'm not a racist person at all, I don't care if you're black, white, purple or any other color...but this crap makes me want to start.

In a perfect world, race would not be an issue. If a white cop was involved in an incident with a person of color, whatever that color might be, the facts of the matter would be based on details, color not being one of the factors. But this isn't a perfect world. We all hold some prejudicial elements in our thought process, when skin tone is a factor. I don't care who you are, or how open minded you claim to be. >>I don't care if you are black, white, brown or mauve,<< somewhere in your psyche, perhaps right at the surface or buried deep, we all make judgements at times that are racially biased. The person of color who automatically feels they are being targeted based on race has a long historical reference to bolster their feeling. Likewise the average suburban white person who has been inundated with news of black on white crime, or reports of gang violence , will invariably recoil if approached by anyone remotely fitting that description.

I have put a lot of thought into this and done a bit of research. He claims to be Church of Christ... CLAIMS... we don't really know for sure. I don't think people are stopping to think about his roots. But either way, he is half black and to a lot of people, especially around here, that's still black. I'm not a racist, but i do tend to over think things I guess. There are groups of people who gather and talk that are racist (ie KKK). Do you honestly think that if he was elected to be the next president that there would be no assasination attempts? Kennedy was assassinated and he had A LOT to do with the civil rights. Lincoln was assasinated and he helped free the slaves. Is our country really ready for a black president? I mean Lincoln was a long time ago, but Kennedy was less than 50 years ago. My mom still remembers the day he was shot. I have a friend who is black and fully supports O'Bama. His reasoning: He's black. He has no idea what the man stands for and what he wants to accomplish in office... just that he's black... I myself would have to meet a genuine person to even vote for a democrat...

When he did it, it was kind of street theater. I mean, he could bring people together. He was black, needless to say, but he was colorblind as an artist. In other words, his theory of art, of American art-making, was: you steal from everybody. I don’t care if you’re white, black, purple, or blue, if you make a sound that I like, I’m going to steal it, and then I’m going to acknowledge where I got it from. But I’m going to do everything I can to steal, borrow, it doesn’t really matter what word he used, I’m going to listen hard, take what I need from the various places in the culture that it happens to dwell.

There was a man in line ahead of me at the store one time who was being kind of a pain to the cashier. The store was busy and she was getting a bit exasperated. Suddenly the guy says, "She don't like Mexicans! That girl don't like Mexicans!" Um, no. Your being Mexican hasn't a thing to do with it. She's annoyed because you're being a pain in the ass! I knew a woman who was like that, too. One time when we were having lunch together she confronted another woman who was there whom I didn't get along with and caused a big scene. Afterwards, when I asked her why she did that she immediately said, "it's because I'm black, isn't it? You're mad because I'm black!" I told her, "I don't care if you're black, white or purple with green spots, I'm upset because that was an uncomfortable and embarrassing public situation back there--OK? If I was the kind of person that wouldn't like you just because you're black, would I even be here with you?" She was sort of taken aback but then understood where I was coming from. Being of a minority race doesn't mean you have free license to screw up and/or act like a jerk and not get called on it, by anybody whether of your race or not.

I, as a Black woman, agree with your comments. Black people are just as guilty as the 'so called' Racist White persons for not creating a better atmosphere for race relations. Blacks are so quick to point fingers at others, but refuse to address the atrocities that go on in their communities every single day. I don't live in the Ghetto, but I still live in the same Black neighborhood I've lived in for the last 36 years and the Ghetto is closing in on us fast, so I see it go on everyday. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton will forever keep Black people in the Ghettos because, if for some grace of God that the majority of Black people make it out.... Those SOB's will no longer have a reason to blame 'Whitety' our all of our problems. And just for the record... I am a light complexioned Black woman who was called everything from a 'Honkey Ho' to a 'White Bitch' during most of my Junior High School days. Who should I blame for my pain during those sad and troubled times. Guess what... it ain't the 'White Man'.

Give me a break. I could write a story about it, I lived it. My relatives lived by Tiger Stadium during that time. The only white family on the block. Cadillacs lined the block but the houses were in disrepair and the children were in rags but they had their Caddies. They went nuts I am NOT a prejudice person at all but the blacks did it to themselves. I saw many houses with bullit holes in them for what, entertainment? Burned stores etc. Why? Why bring it up.

The news reporter is either thinking:
A) "Holy shit, I'm busted!"
B) "Oh shit, close enough!" Since there is a running truth/joke about black guys getting unfairly arrested/harrassed by police all the time just because they kind of look like another black guy who did something a few blocks away.
C) The absurdity of a news reporter reporting a crime he himself committed, completely regardless of any race issues whatsoever. It's practically a comedy sketch-- imagine Chevy Chase on SNL doing the news and a sketch that looks something like him popping up behind him while he looks slightly startled.
Multiple layers of humor that completely escape morons.

We are the melting pot of the world and I'm happy to say, for one I'm NOT a racist. If I don't get along with someone, it isn't because of Race Religion or Color of their skin. It's because of personality clashes. I would like nothing better on earth than having all people treated like human beings and all abuse in every shape and form STOPPED in it's tracks. Wars should stop worldwide and everyone just get along together. We are going to need each other to accomplish this. Gale

So what would you say to all that person who is like "I'm not racist, but..."
Obviously that person isn't full of hatred for the people in the other race. Say they have friends or co-workers or whatever who they get along real well with. Someone who they can love and identify with and would even defend against racist attacks.
Yet there's something in a certain cultural demographic or stereotype that they repeatedly witness and it sets them off and they come out haranguing all [insert race here], despite their professed admiration to the actual real [insert race here] who they know.
What do you say to that person?

I was wanting to kill some time and went to play Party Poker for free. Just logged in and picked a table. I didn't even glance at the names of anyone else seated there. Played the first hand and won. Then I happened to look at the scrolling messages and see... shoat leave this table right now. I'm thinking WTF? I then see that everyone else at this table has a Hispanic name. The asshole in me kicks in and I ask it what the problem is. He says didn't want any gringo players on this board. I'm already laughing so hard I can hardly type. I asked him if this was prejudice or what? He just said they don't want any cracker gringo on there with them. So I asked him did he want me gone just because I was a gringo. All I got was a fuck you. After much more baiting him with no response I finally just left after telling him I was leaving only because of the awful smell on that particular board.
Funny thing is I never thought of how politically incorrect our exchange was. To me it was just an asshole talking back to another asshole.
Of course the PC thing to say would've been... "Excuse me for accidently stumbling upon your board. Forgive me for anything bad that any of my kind has ever done to your kind. Please, just let me know if there's any way I can possibly make up for this terrible intrusion." I feel so guilty for being a white male US citizen.

There's some major unpacking needed of the difference between "race" and "culture" before I can really answer that question, because the two most certainly are not the same thing.
If they're someone I consider a friend, rather than bristle and call them a racist (which is usually totally destructive IMHO), I just talk with them about what they've experienced, and try to subtly suggest other reasons for it, or provide evidence that counters their point. But it totally depends on what they're pissed off about.

The legend of Purple Aki
Stories about a man named 'Purple Aki', partially based upon Arobieke[4][5] (though wildly exaggerated), were common amongst children in Merseyside and the surrounding areas throughout the 1980s and 1990s.[11][12] 'Purple Aki' was said to have earned his name because he was "so black he was purple"[13], or more fancifully because he had purple hair[14]. As with most urban legends the details varied considerably, but stories usually involved 'Purple Aki' pursuing or capturing school children and then mutilating, raping or murdering them. He was also said to carve the initials 'P.A.' into the buttocks of his victims.

I am so sick of hearing racism whenever anyone argues an issue with the Obama crowd. I’m from TN and have seen racism all my life and it has hurt me. Don’t call me a racist just because I’m from the south; I recently voted for Ford, Jr. in his bid for the governorship so I have no problem supporting a black.
Prejudices are a part of our American life. Just look at the Oscars. We have had a lot of stunning performances by black men and women in films thru the years yet only recently have Halley and Denzel been awarded Oscars. It was always going to be hard for a black to get the nomination. Many are not ready for that.
My problem is that the MSM, progressive bloggers and others have been so unfair and biased with their ridicule and insults towards Hillary, her husband and even poor Chelsea while Obama remains totally unvetted. Many Americans will not stand for these groups trying to cram someone down our throats. The close election reflects this. Obama will not be elected. I will never support him and am one of those Hillary girls who will go to McCain rather that allow groups to manipulate my views and this election.
The GOP has been studying how Obama’s group has repelled negative issues by raising the racism claim and they are getting prepared for this in the fall. Additionally, I don’t think they really care about being called “racist”.
Just a thought: Obama must be trying to buffer against this latest negative Michelle tape that the GOP have where she rails against “whitey”. Now Obama wants spouses “off limits” but they didn’t have a hands off policy with Bill during the primary!
I’m convinced that Obama is unelectable! I’ll never vote for him and many like me will not either. Funny thing; we don’t care if you call us a racist or not. We know that’s just an excuse for Obama whenever he doesn’t have an answer.

"I am not racist, I don't associate myself with racists. In fact their are some African American's, who if they ran I would be more than happy to vote for. Victor David Hanson, Thomas Sowell, and even Condi Rice and shes a woman to boot! In hindsight, I can see your point on the racist thing, their is that little part about his church which preaches black advancement... blah blah blah, their is some truth to that part, but that wasn't what I was trying to shed light on.
the main points I was trying to point out are his refusal to say the pledge of elegance. I, not being a religious person can understand not wanting to say the "one nation under god" part, how ever I understand what that actually means: "we are one unified nation under a banner of common beliefs and principals". In my opinion if the president of the united states is not willing to "pledge" his "allegiance" to all of our common principals and beliefs, then he has absolutely no right to lead us.
He flies the America flag equal to the flag of Che Guevara. First off you show respect for your country by flying your flag the highest, above, greater then, etc, to all other flags. But thats not even the worst part. He flies it equal to a flag of Che. That red star on his bouree that most of the time looks like an x, is the Red Communist Star. He was a socialist gurella who deprived countless people of their freedom by forcing them into the bondage of communism. Communism is actually the exact opposite of Freedom. There, government is your god. You are nothing but a small, insignificant robot, you are told where and when to work, at your job that is assigned by your government. Tell me if these ideals should be close to the ours? I don't understand how Che, with all he stands for, can be idolized by todays young and left. The whole mantra of the young hippie movement who put him atop this pedestal was in stark opposition to the real man. Che to them was a rebel, who fought against the the social norm that our last few generations have taken all too for granted. But at the end of the day weren't the hippies all about peace and love an d freedom? I would love to see a bunch of Hippies be confronted by their masonic leader Che, he would probably have killed them just the same."

“White people are weary of the kinds of black people who are dedicated to indicting whites as racists. So, to be ‘too black’ is to carry an air about you that whites have something to answer for.”
"Our data suggest that such resistance is not because white Americans are mean and uncaring, morally bankrupt or ethically flawed," adds Dr. Mahzarin R. That experiment -- in which whites had to say how much money they'd want in exchange for being black for the rest of their lives -- strikes me as totally bonkers. The subjects gave low numbers, so the experimenters say they're underestimating black hardship. But I'd think there'd be a strong bias against giving a high number since that so easily sounds racist, i.e. "You'd have to give me a million dollars, buddy!"

To whom it may concern, There has been alot of canceling god going around lately. Why? Because some people are offened or get offened when the name of god is spoken. Well I have to say that I get offended when, after all of my life, of praying and talking to my god , who I might add has answered alot of prayer's for me, that someone can all of a sudden think that it's o.k. for them to, just because they don't have the same beleif's as I do
that my children can't say the pledge of elegance in class ,the way I did and many of generations
before us did. And I should'nt say merry christmas any more because it's not exceptible any more,
now I hear that they want to take televised church off of television, along with all christmas programs . Well I'd like to know how long it's going to be before we are told we have to close our churches or our
children are not aloud to attend sunday school.

Isn't that kind of the point though, Charlie? As part of the study white participants were asked to put a dollar value on living as a minority member of a fictional society and the necessary pay-off was much higher than what was deemed the trade-off to live as a black American. Whether or not people underestimated the cost of living as black person due to social pressure or because they legitimately felt that the cost of doing so was trivial it's still fucked up, no?
Sorry, seriously, I'm posting through a haze of alcohol and jet lag but the last paragraph I posted seemed to me be pretty apt.
― Lamp, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 03:24 (seventeen years ago)
Right, but I'm saying my intuition is that many (most?) study participants would feel as much pressure to give a low number as a high one, because of the way the question was put to them. People tend to try to give the "right" answer, à la the Bradley/Wilder effect, and enough people are going to be motivated by that to render the results moot: a high number feels like a racist answer, so they give a low one. If you ask someone a question with a potential "gotcha" waiting in the wings, they're likely to triangulate based on what they think they're supposed to say -- and questions about race are the ultimate "gotcha", at least in the present era. So comparisons to a hypothetical become kind of bogus, because people aren't really giving authentic answers in the first place -- whereas of course the numbers go up when they give them a list of costs associated with being black, because then the prompt is clearly towards a high number.
Basically, I just think it's a poorly-conceived study, though its heart is in the right place.

There are two faults with this argument. First of all, when it came to musicians, Motown had no racial or gender bias. They were all faceless cogs to them. Regardless of whether they were black, white, female, male, or Martian, they weren't going to get any recognition-period! It was a star driven phenomena and the company never gave the slightest thought to publicizing background figures. In addition, the Motown studio band (which was called the Funk Brothers) was not exclusively black. Guitarists Joe Messina and Dennis Coffey, percussionist Jack Brokensha, arranger Dave Van dePitte, and bassist Bob Babbit, who also played quite a few important Motown dates, were all white.

"This election is going to be decided when a husband and wife sit at a kitchen table, or a single parent sits at the kitchen table, looks at their bills and figures out who is most likely to help them with their financial condition," Rendell said. "If the answer's Barack Obama, nobody's going to care whether he's black, green, orange, purple, fuchsia or whatever."

Yeah I saw that quote, too, PP. I think it's hilarious the way this election is about to be decided by racist, uneducated, homophobic, pro-life, pro-gun nitwits who suddenly and miraculously decide that when their own WALLETS are at stake, a black Democrat for president starts seeming like the best choice.
Much like the hardline economist neo-cons who have insisted at every turn that in order for the economy (and everything else) to function well, government has to stay out of things and who are now (surprise!) turning to the government to bail out a problem created by the unbridled free-market capitalism they praise so highly and so often. I've got half a mind to look up my Republifascist economics professor from the early 00's and ask him how he feels about government intervention NOW. Then kick him to the curb.

I have a mind that focuses on the fact that he is a doorman and functions as a doorman.
... because "is a doorman and functions as a doorman" is somewhat rhetorically distinct from "is a person who happens to be employed as a doorman"

their webpage seems to say that he's guilty because he stood idly by while witnessing others' discrimination and that he's guilty because he directed the discrimination, two allegations that would seem to be in opposition to one another
I'm not sure I see how these are inherently opposed -- the claim would seem to be that he stood idly by while witnessing others' discrimination because he had directed them to discriminate! One of those things is harder to prove than the other, but they are in no way opposed to one another.

Dude, gabb, are we talking about the same website, linked above? The claim seems pretty clear to me -- the allegation is that the management group was directed by Spitzer to get rid of black employees, and that when a campaign of intimidation did not induce them to quit, they were summarily fired.
(Also there are direct allegations about his behavior in there: "All of this came after direct confrontation with Bernard Spitzer himself on the building property. He refused to respond to any of us - even to a simple 'good morning Mr. Spitzer.' On one occasion when he saw one of my African American co-workers at the front desk filling in for a concierge who was in the restroom, he went out of his mind yelling, turned real red and stomped off.")
I don't know what distinction you're trying to make -- that he may have called for discriminatory firing but that doesn't mean he was rude about it, or something? Because that would be odd.
― nabisco, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

― nabisco, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)
the harassment appears to be the order to clean the toilets with toothbrushes, and the associated comments from management company employees. there's no direct allegation that spitzer ordered or was aware of any of those things in particular, or perhaps even generally.

The argument is that the substance presented in the allegations is not enough to provide evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that Spitzer order the harrassment or knew it was going on. At worst, the current allegation is that he didn't have enough insight into how shitty his proxy was.
None of this is germane to the original, still funny joke.
― Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:26 (seventeen years ago)
xpost - The best I can figure is that he is saying no one has directly claimed "Spitzer directly instructed me to engage in discriminatory practices and harassment," and that the assertion he did is currently a second-hand "that's what the management said" kind of thing. But I'm not sure what difference that would make to our discussion, or who has argued anything to the contrary.
xpost - yeah, Dan, what's the point of that argument here? This thread has consisted of a joke and approximately zero people saying "oh yeah, I have reviewed the evidence and concluded that he's definitely legally responsible"
― nabisco, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)
my reading of the allegations here is that plaintiffs are alleging that they were subjected to harassment, that one harasser told one harassee that the harassment was a product of spitzer's order to get rid of the harassees (nb: no allegation that spitzer knew of the harassment), and that plaintiffs therefore surmise that spitzer ordered the harassment, citing in support circumstantial evidence suggesting that he didn't like them
note that plaintiffs also allege that they were fired right before they became eligilble for union membership. is that consistent with their argument?

Explain what subtlety I am missing here: one of the plaintiffs' allegations is specifically that Spitzer ordered their firing based on race! The fact that it's not very concretely supported does not keep it from being an allegation

Wearing a T-shirt featuring goth-punk band the Misfits, Klever signified outsiderness both literally and figuratively.
As Klever launched into his set, though, nobody seemed to give his fashion or musical identification a second thought. After all, earlier that night, Oklahoma's DJ P hyped up the crowd by dropping Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Journey, among others, over dope hip-hop beats. And half the contestants were either Asian-American or Canadian.
"Back in the day [we] got hated on," Klever says, "maybe because we sucked, maybe because of color of skin, I don't know. It was kind of weird back then, but it's loosened up a lot. Now there are a lot of Filipinos, white kids, Spanish [speakers]. It's all just melting in to its pot. ... So much goes into DJing. Timing, confidence. If you have all of that, it doesn't matter, you could be purple."

Both women, who are white, said the crackdown had nothing to do with race. "I don't care if you're black, white or polka dot," said Roller. "We don't want that kind of activity here."

michael flamm, 'law and order: street crime, civil unrest, and the crisis of liberalism in the 1960s', first paragraph:
In June 1968 a white father of five from North Carolina expressed his view of the state of the nation with these words: I’m sick of crime everywhere. I’m sick of riots. I’m sick of “poor” people demonstrations (black, white, red, yellow, purple, green or any other color!) I’m sick of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling for the good of a very small part rather than the whole of our society. . . . I’m sick of the lack of law enforcement. . . . I’m sick of Vietnam. . . . I’m sick of hippies, LSD, drugs, and all the promotion the news media give them. . . . But most of all, I’m sick of constantly being kicked in the teeth for staying home, minding my own business, working steadily, paying my bills and taxes, raising my children to be decent citizens, managing my financial affairs so I will not become a ward of the City, County, or State, and footing the bill for all the minuses mentioned herein.

The Abella report explained some very important concepts. For instance, it defined the difference between equal treatment and equity.
To illustrate, let's say I'm the boss of Doodads Inc. I am very proud of the way I treat everyone the same. I don't care if you're black, white or purple. If you come to do a job at Doodads, that's all I care about.
Actually, upon closer inspection, maybe that's not quite true. I just gave Dolores maternity leave last week to have her baby. And I put in a wheelchair ramp because Carl was having trouble getting into the warehouse. I gave Lucy a break so she could observe her holy day. So maybe I don't treat everyone exactly the same; if I did, people like Dolores wouldn't be working for Doodads; maybe she'd be on welfare.
Equal opportunity does not always mean equal treatment. Sometimes, to achieve equality on the job -- to ensure a level playing field -- you have to treat people differently. That's practising equity. It's a recognition that our life experiences have an important bearing on our ability to work.

Meet the concert organisers, Glazed Cherry Inc. Or at least a few of them.
There's Jay Sellwood, the public face of the outfit. And what a face it is, with all that blond hair and pierced features. But he's not a fierce creature.
He did seize the Cherrystock microphone and rail against the violent fringe -- Unreported quote: "I don't care if you're black white or purple, gangs suck!" -- but such anger is not his natural state. Enthusiasm is more his mode.

The best solution would be for a real opera company to plan proper, staged productions of both these Stein-Thomson scores and to cast them with the most musicially refined, theatrically alert, personable singers it can find -black, white or purple. It didn't happen for Mr. Thomson's 85th birthday year, but perhaps we may still have hopes for his 90th.

Dade County has agreed to supply recreation equipment for an after-school program at the Haitian-American Voter Education (HAVE) Center, 7545 Biscayne Blvd.
The program, planned to include soccer and volleyball teams and a dance troupe, was created for 6- to 16-year-olds by Jacques Despinosse, HAVE Center director.
"We want this to be a reality, but we don't want it to be just for Haitian kids," Despinosse said. "Kids are kids, black, white or purple."

The people I spoke with - the lawyers for both sides and a woman at the day-care center - had not even mentioned that the plumber was black. So, when I wrote the column, I was in a liberal mode. I was supporting the poor, who in this instance happened to be black, against the prosperous supply company, which is owned by a white family. ''I live with racism five days a week,'' continued Gooden, ''and thanks to you, I had to live with it again on Sunday.'' To me, this was absolute nonsense. It had not mattered to me whether the plumber was black, white or green.

It’s a remarkable story for any band to live up to, but then Stone’s new idea sounds pretty remarkable too. “You know what? I’m looking for albino musicians,” he says. “My feeling about it is that it could neutralise all the different racial problems.” At first I think I’ve misheard him, which is remarkably easy to do. At 70, his voice is raspy and slightly slurred, perhaps the result of decades of hard living, or maybe something to do with a bizarre accident some years ago, when he apparently fell off a cliff in Beverly Hills while eating a plate of food: he declined to be treated for the injuries to his neck, a decision that has left him in constant pain unless he hunches over, his chin on his chest. Coupled with a patchy mobile phone signal and a bad transatlantic line, I occasionally lose the thread of what he’s saying entirely. But this time I’ve heard him loud and clear. “To me,” he continues, “albinos are the most legitimate minority group of all. All races have albinos. If we all realise that we’ve all got albinos in our families, it’s going to take away from the ridiculous racial tension, if you’re black or you’re white, blah blah blah. That’s why I’ve been trying to look for albino musicians and organise a group of people that are going to be right. That’s what I’ve been rehearsing for. People will see us, all of us together – a real family, an albino family. People will get happy when they see that! People,” he says firmly, “have got to be happy for that.”http://www.salon.com/2013/08/30/sly_stone_planning_comeback_with_all_albino_band/

Davion always longed for a family. His caseworker took him to picnics, put his portrait in the Heart Gallery. But he had thrown chairs, blown his grades, pushed people away. When he learned his birth mother was dead, everything changed. He had to let go of the hope that she would come get him. Abandon his anger. Now he didn't have anyone else to blame."He decided he wanted to control his behavior and show everyone who he could be," Going said.So someone would want him."I'll take anyone," Davion said. "Old or young, dad or mom, black, white, purple. I don't care. And I would be really appreciative. The best I could be."

I don't understand why everyone also has to assume it's a hate crime JUST because the victim was black. From what I understand from reading several other articles, this girl was highly intoxicated, high on Marijuana, and banging on this man's door and yelling at 2AM. I don't care if she was black, white, hispanic, ect. That could be deemed as threatening. Granted, I don't know exactly what transpired on that porch, but I doubt that 54 year old man though, "Oh, a black person they must be dangerous." I am so sick of how every time a black person is killed by a white person, no matter what the circumstances, it is a racist hate crime

I would like to say that white people moving to Oakland is not the "issue," despite what new Oakland commenters on this thread are charging. Victim much? White people moving to Oakland is the symptom of the problem. It may seem like a small nuance to the newcomers reading this thread but there is actually a huge difference between an issue and its symptom. And I'm sorry, I know no one likes being singled out as symptom... Real Oaklanders know, color may matter but the color that matters the most, especially in the new Oakland is green...so please can we all now just get along and figure out where all these new people... White, Purple or otherwise are supposed to go and where we are going to put the current Oaklanders, whatever their color, that want to stay...and find a spot for another Wholefoods close to Steve's place.Posted by ****** on 10/14/2015 at 6:25 PM

MARIA BARTIROMO (HOST): Dr. Gorka, how do you see it now after that briefing where we now know that 50 people are dead, 53 others are in the hospital and this was an act of terrorism?SEBASTIAN GORKA: Maria, we need to stop using words like shocking. Nobody should be shocked. This is what they have been planning to do after Paris, after Brussels. Nobody should be surprised. Likewise, this isn't to be called a tragedy. This isn't an Amtrak train being derailed. This is part of the global jihadi strategy. It's not an accident. It is war against America. And lastly, please, please, I beg my colleagues in the U.S. government, we have to stop talking about this maybe being a hate crime. It's not a hate crime. It is part of an ideological military assault on the United States of America. We have arrested 101 people linked to ISIS on U.S. soil since the caliphate was declared. This attack in part was facilitated by the policies of this administration, President Obama and Secretary Clinton, that have allowed political correctness into the threat assessment. Today I beg the White House, stop with the political correctness. We need to destroy this enemy before more innocent people, gay, straight, black, white, brown, yellow are murdered on U.S. soil.
SEBASTIAN GORKA: Maria, we need to stop using words like shocking. We visit Dolezal's studio. She is, in all honesty, a very talented painter. The majority of her paintings feature black people. Other than the paintings of her children, most of the black people depicted appear to be dressed as slaves or tribespeople. Breaking this pattern was a series of portraits hanging on the wall of Dolezal herself. They were done Warhol style, each painting duplicated in a different color. Dolezal explains them to me: "You know, people are always saying to me, 'Rachel, I don't care if you are red, green, blue, or purple,' so I decided to paint myself as red, green, blue, or purple."Dolezal chuckles as she says this, as if it is the most clever and original idea anybody has ever had. I don't know how many times a white person has told me that they don't care if I'm "red, green, blue, or purple" when they are trying to explain to me just how "not racist" they are—I've lost count. I do know that I've rolled my eyes every time. As my brother Ahamefule said to me once, "They may not care if I'm red or green or blue or purple—but they sure as hell care that I'm black."

One of the beneficiaries of Robinson’s groundbreaking efforts in baseball was professional basketball. The National Basketball Association was only in its second year when Robinson debuted and a culture of segregation had not yet hardened. But there were still no African-American players in the league when the owners convened for a player draft on April 25, 1950. In the second round, with the 14th pick of the draft, Boston Celtics owner Walter Brown picked Chuck Cooper who had earned All-American honors at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Startled, a fellow owner blurted out, “Walter, don’t you know he’s a colored boy?” Brown responded, “I don’t care if he’s striped, plaid or polka dot."

Just under a century ago, the Soviet Union embarked on one of the strangest attempts to reshape the common calendar that has ever been undertaken. As Joseph Stalin raced to turn an agricultural backwater into an industrialized nation, his government downsized the week from seven to five days. Saturday and Sunday were abolished. In place of the weekend, a new system of respite was introduced in 1929. The government divided workers into five groups, and assigned each to a different day off. On any given day, four-fifths of the proletariat would show up to their factories and work while the other fifth rested. Each laborer received a colored slip of paper—yellow, orange, red, purple, or green—that signified his or her group. The staggered schedule was known as nepreryvka, or the “continuous workweek,” since production never stopped.Socially, the nepreryvka was a disaster. People had no time to see friends; instead they associated by color: purple people with purple people, orange with orange, and so on.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Republican Gov. Chris Sununu on Thursday denounced a conservative group’s offer to pay $500 to the first person who “catches” a public school teacher violating New Hampshire’s new limits on the discussion of systemic racism and other topics.Sununu had opposed an earlier version of the legislation that echoed a Trump administration order and sought to ban discussion of “divisive concepts” in schools. But he later backed language inserted into the state budget ’that would prohibit teaching children that they are inferior, racist, sexist or oppressive by virtue of their race, gender or other characteristics.

While the article touches on the deeper issues somewhat, in a typical AP loaded 'both sides' framework, it seems like the law as stated doesn't clearly forbid CRT at all. My understanding is that CRT deals with systemic racism specifically, and because the law specifically forbids teaching individuals that they are racist, it would still allow discussion of systemic issues which do not necessarily reflect on individual children. Although "oppressive by virtue of race" is basically wide open to interpretation.

https://fox2now.com/news/missouri/lawmakers-continue-probe-of-critical-race-theory-in-missouri-schools-despite-results-of-district-survey/
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Monday was the first day of school for many districts in Missouri. Over the summer, the state’s education department asked school districts if they taught critical race theory in a survey.
Last month, members of the Missouri House and Senate heard testimony on why critical race theory (CRT) should be banned in the state, but on Monday, they heard why schools should teach it. Of the 554 districts in the state, only one said it teaches CRT.
“I don’t think that people actually know what critical race theory is at one moment in time,” Former director of the Anti-Defamation League Karen Aroesty told the committee. “Learning about the history of race and racism is important.”

Over the summer, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) gave the 500 plus school districts a survey about CRT and the “1619 Project.” The first question read:Question: Does your LEA’s board-approved curriculum include lessons about CRT?The only school to answer yes was Kansas City Public Schools, explaining their answer by saying:“We offer an African Centered College prep magnet school that services both elementary and secondary students. The board also approved the 1619 Project service learning and community activism grant to be taught during summer school. The curriculum is fully aligned with the Missouri Learning Standards.”Five schools left the answer blank and 419 districts said no.The second question read:Question: Does your LEA’s board-approved curriculum include The New York Times 1619 Project?Three schools answered yes: Hazelwood School District, Kansas City Public Schools, and the School District of University City. Hazelwood explains its answer by saying:“4th Grade Social Studies – The 1619 Project is listed as one of the teacher resources about the arrival of enslaved Africans in Jamestown.8th Grade Social Studies – Students are given a reading of two paragraphs from the 1619 Project describing the arrival of enslaved Africans in Jamestown.US History (9th Grade) – The 1619 Project is mentioned in a suggested learning activity where President Trump discusses the 1619 Project and the 1776 project.”University City explained its answer by saying:“Our board did not approve the 1619 Project. One of our teachers used the resource during one unit of study with students.”
