A couple years ago it was really cold and rainy out one night so I was smoking a cigarette out my bedroom window on the fourth floor. I was on the phone with my mom when I saw something strange scurrying in front of a house on the other side of the road. I kept staring at it and told my mom that there was a really strange looking animal outside that looked like a giant white guinea pig. She said that it was probably an opossum and not to worry but I kept staring and saying that possums were grey/silverish not white but then again why on Earth would there be a big guinea pig out on the street in the rain, right? Right. So I went in the other room and when I came back the "possum" was gone and I thought that was the end of it.
A couple days later I saw a sign posted near my bldg that said Piggy a pet guinea pig had gone missing and had a number to call if anyone had seen him. :-( I felt so sad that I hadn't helped the poor little guy. I called and told the people where I'd seen him but honestly there was no way he could have lived through that night - it was freezing. Poor Piggy. I could have saved him!

DO GUINEA PIGS PURR?
They do when they are content, feel safe and happy. They will purr if a friendly guinea pig is grooming them, or sometimes when they are settling down ready to sleep.

― s1ocki, Tuesday, 22 July 2008 22:50 (seventeen years ago)
The important question is: did he get a buttermilk bath and did a spider alert us that he was "SOME PIG"?
4-H is totally chillaxed, and therefore actually fun.

"Did I ever tell you about my second small boy's names for his Guinea pigs? They included Bishop Doane; Dr. Johnson, my Dutch Reformed pastor; Father G. Grady, the local priest with whom the children had scraped a speaking acquaintance; Fighting Bob Evans, and Admiral Dewey."
From his Nov. 22, 1900, letter to E. S. Martin regarding "fine names for guinea pigs."

― the stain specialist (Viceroy), Sunday, 26 July 2009 19:12 (sixteen years ago)
Okay, apparently there's a movie from 2008 featuring Stephen Fry and Steve Coogan on voices but I assume that will be lol ironic and not up to the Johnny Morris version I posted. According to IMDB Further Tales of the Riverbank is from 1992 but I'm sure the version I remember from the early 70s was in colour. The original series seems to be black and white and made in the 60s, so my memory could be playing tricks. It looks like the older series are only available on VHS :( There's a lot of eps up on Youtube tho I think.
― Skeevy Wonder (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 26 July 2009 19:17 (sixteen years ago)
Guinea pigs are easily baffled and corralled by 4" (10 cm) high walls, so I enjoy the idea of GPs that are spies with behaviors copped from Mountain Dew ads.

i worry that my guinea pig is lonely. when i got him from the rescue they said not to put him with other pigs, though - not because of aggression issues, but because he is a pushover. i don't know, i feel like he needs a friend that isn't 100x his size.

I have eaten more guinea pigs than I care to remember when I was in Peru... I mean, we were hanging with poor farmers and when they cook them for you it's a big deal, you can't say no. But It was not the easiest thing I have ever done. They call them "cuy", pronounced "kwee", cuz of the noise they make.
― sleeve, Thursday, 22 August 2013 14:27 (twelve years ago)

― Fais ce que voudra, occiderai de même (Michael White), Thursday, 22 August 2013 20:03 (twelve years ago)
i've never had a rabbit so i can't compare, but my guinea pig isn't destructive at all. i've heard some will chew cables if you let them run around, but mine doesn't.

― Fais ce que voudra, occiderai de même (Michael White), Thursday, 22 August 2013 20:10 (twelve years ago)
mine only chews what he's supposed to, but i think he might be unusual in that regard. i bought him a little edible shelter that was supposed to only a couple weeks, and he has had it for well over a year.

― 1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Thursday, 22 August 2013 20:14 (twelve years ago)

― Fais ce que voudra, occiderai de même (Michael White), Thursday, 22 August 2013 20:23 (twelve years ago)
he eats a lot of timothy hay. i guess that satisfies the desire to chew. i know it helps keep their "cheek teeth" short.

on thurs nights i usually get Hastings out and let him hang in the living room with Bernard and me while we watch movies, etc. i usually put some fleece and some of his toys and hay out on the coffee table, but sometimes i put them on the floor and just let him roam. we are doing that tonight. he went over and got into my purse and was chewing on my money! this has never happened before.
