Why, for the same reason we all need short books like Drew's on albums we love -- for their informative qualities and easy handling. :-D

A Very Short Introduction, that's the name of the series. There's also the In a Nutshell series, which has far uglier covers.

It was the "very short introduction to Descartes"- in addition to reading lots of Descartes proper I'm trying to read as many different "ways in" to Descartes as I can in preparation for teaching him for the first time this semester- John Cottingham's, and Margaret Dauler Wilson's, and Bernard Williams' and so on and on and on . . .

I've also read the ones on Hegel and on "Emotion" in the same series.

I'm not a big fan of Descartes. The only thing I really liked of his (the cogito) has been seriously challenged for me by Sartre's phenomenology, and his renunciation of his own sceptical ideas in the meditations is weak.

I must say, though, that from what I know of those 'Very Short Introductions', they are actually pretty well done, and have the top-notch scholars for almost every subject working for them.

Thank you! I love it too, it has curving front seams that turn sideways over the hipbones and make pockets, and each pocket has another one of those giant black buttons on it (like on the neckline). Found at the last minute before needed for wedding.
