aim app only works while running. You give it yr details once, it remembers them. Tabbed interface -- buddies, statuses and live I'm conversations. It's pretty neat.

Nnw is a disappointment. Offline Reading is nice, but UI not polished, no control over feeds, no unified, poor browser. Very 1.0

I haven't used the itunes remote app yet (soon I hope!) but from what I've read, it lets you display and play from your computer's itunes library on your iphone/ipod touch. It does it over wifi.

i'm not at all a technical guy, so i just wanted to be able to have sync'd email, calendars, contacts and notes between phone, home computer and work computer. since they're all macs i figured it was the easiest way to go.

i've had .mac forever for the syncing between computers. now that it syncs to the phone wirelessly w/ push, even better. i still use my gmail as my main contact, though.

Just now it's pointless. Can't get in at all in Safari, can just about with Firefox. I wonder if my email-only account is causing problems.

I'm thinking about buying it just for the sync calendars. An exchange set up would be cheaper, but you know, yeuch.

killer apps but lots of bugs. some apps crash and just go straight to the home screen like AIM) and some crash the phone, causing immediate reboot. lack of the wall in the facebook app is actually KILLER WIN because i can now actually, like, keep track of my friends instead of all this Poking and shit. I would've liked that Google app if it had a Reader & gTalk but, and while it links you to webapps that are pretty damn serviceable, it's doesn't have quite the functionality of a proper app. super monkey ball is helllllllla fun and hard as well. i tried buying that crazy synthesizer but am having problems downloading it. might be the coolest thing on there though...

The WeatherBug app blows the iPhone's built-in Weather app out of the water. Full current weather and forecast info on one screen, up-to-date radar on another, and local weather webcams on a third. Outstanding.

Okay, I downloaded Midomi and "sang" Bring The Noize, Public Enemy style, all the way from Bass! to Terminator X and got Hannah Montana - The Other Side of Me (Remix) O_o

Midomi has been incredibly sucky for me; I sang the Chichester Psalms at it and it gave me a bunch of flamenco music.

my brief experiences so far: shazam failed on the VERY FIRST HURDLE, ie "on me not in me" by earl brutus. but it knew "navyhead" and it got "lose him" by i start counting, so tick tick pretty good. martin galway's "ocean loader" confused the shit out of it; it redeemed itself by being able to differentiate between different recordings of "senses" by new order.

I am feeling left out by not buying into the iPhone. I think the Blackberry Thunder is potentially a better phone (haptic feedback screen and everything) but the applications will suck by comparison. (Can do copy and paste though).

pandora is pretty great for a free app, the database/matching has gotten a lot better. however, it's already frozen up on me a few times, usually when i left it paused for a few minutes

Things looks pretty nice, OmniFocus too but it's expensive and ott GTD. I just care about lists, and My Lists does them pretty well, but with shitty icons.

i was already using omnifocus when i got the iphone and i love the omnifocus iphone app. i'm not sure how much omnifocus costs right now but i got it for ~$20 as a prerelease purchase because i'd already bought omnigraffle, omnioutliner and omniplan. $20 for the iphone app on top of that seems very reasonable. i'm not sure i would be so jazzed about spending $100 for the two together, though!

if i already had omnifocus i would definitely get the iPhone app to go with it. i already feel the same way about ical - like having it with you in your phone all the time makes the original app about 500x better.

How well does the "location aware" task list work?

i haven't even tried it yet because i just moved and that's not really how my contexts are organized.

TBH, i find the idea sort of confusing because i had always thought that the point of a context list was to be intentionally vague. my contexts are "on the phone" (ie while driving, ha), "running errands", "at work" and "at home".

if i had a context list that looked like "safeway on lomas santa fe", "safeway on el camino real", "whole foods on la jolla village dr", "whole foods on university", etc etc then i might as well just use a pad & paper, right?

the yellowpages app is pretty good for this, actually. i can search for "office supplies" and use "location" and it gives me a list of stores arranged by distance or by alphabetical name. already came in handy a few times for finding things like ATMs and drugstores.

I have somehow populated my iphone's contacts with my gmail address book contacts and so I now have several entries for the same people all with just an e-mail address - howtf has that even happened? I mean, howtf could a normal sync even do that?!

We have recently completed the transition from .Mac to MobileMe. Unfortunately, it was a lot rockier than we had hoped.

Although core services such as Mail, iDisk, Sync, Back to My Mac, and Gallery went relatively smoothly, the new MobileMe web applications had lots of problems initially. Fortunately we have worked through those problems and the web apps are now up and running.

there is an app called Mobile Flickr which is not actually made by flickr that lets you search on flickr groups. its a pretty good app except that it posts the photos you upload upside down.

go to the page. make sure only the part of the page you want on the icon is displayed on yr screen. press + . press add to home screen.

I’ve been working like crazy on updates to NetNewsWire for iPhone — but, unfortunately, updates aren’t being pushed to the App Store yet. I don’t know why, though I imagine it’s just that things are crazy in the early days.

I don’t know when updates will go out — wish I did.

In the meantime, here’s what I’ve been doing, and here’s the plan:

1. I’ve been fixing bugs and performance issues, and implementing some of the more obvious features. (Not done yet, but getting there.)

Some of the obvious features include things like email-link, choose-clippings-folder, send-to-Twitterrific, mark-as-unread, and remove-feed-from-iPhone-location.

The plan is to finish this up — make stable and fleshed-out the app as it exists right now.

2. Then I’ll revisit the user interface. A number of people have asked for something like a Combined View, where you see excerpts of news items. A reasonable request, absolutely. But the plan is to shore things up in #1 first, then move on to this, once there’s a stable base with a more complete set of features.

Again, I have no idea when any updates will actually appear. But I have indeed been working as quickly as I can — I’ve been pretending to myself that you’re actually getting the updates. ;) (Though not completely satisfying, the pretense fools me enough to keep me going.)

Not that I have an iPhone, but I do love NetNewsWire on the desktop. That said, the Newsgator service is terrible, randomly decides it can read feeds and can't due to "malformed" code that reads perfectly fine in every other newsreader, on- and off-line. If you have to use Newsgator Online to sync your feeds just like with the desktop version... eh.

i just find the fact that you can't collapse your feed folders makes it pretty much unusable. also super jerky and slow.

i got truphone and it seems to work pretty well... it's a voip app, 6c a minute in n america. do you think skype is coming though?

still, the ability to make cheap long distance calls & not use up my minutes is pretty incredible. only works over wifi natch but i make pretty much all my LDCs from home anyway.

Mine is scary-accurate. Remember, GPS doesn't work well indoors, so if you are indoors, it may just give you the location of the nearest cell tower.

NNW is up to v1.0.7 now, but Apple still hasn't released the updates. Apparently, Apple has a single review queue for everything and updating the update sends you to the back of the line again. Anyway, if you've got NNW questions check out the NNW iPhone forum - it's been pretty helpful.

I love OmniFocus but just like my advocation of Evernote, if you don’t get it instantly it isn’t worth 20 dollars. For some it will fit snugly into their workflow for others its a wasted Jackson.

yeah mobile flickr is good for looking. im using the free app 'air me' to upload to flickr now.

i also bought 'fitness' which is kind of great. i got it to calculate calories and take into account time on the treadmill but it also calculates carbs, sugar, saturated fat and salt. on an average day ive found im below my calorie limit but through the roof (like 130% of daily allowance)with sugar and salt.

Yeah adding a Text Note via the application is messed up but Snapshot Note works nearly flawlessly and that’s what I primarily take notes with (e.g. cocktail napkin drawings, etc.) but the real use, at least for me, is searching through existing notes and that works like a charm.

Also, I know you probably already know this but you can use Evernote through e-mail which is handy either in the typical fashion or with Jott.

Merlin Mann had the idea of a simple application that if you have one button enabled as well as an Amazon prime account all you had to do was scan a barcode and wait for whatever you bought to arrive. From a conceptual point I think that’s a great idea ... from a practical standpoint, not so much.

i haven't been loving Things on the desktop too much, actually - tagging is great, but it seems to be a bit useless for big projects with lots of subprojects, and for GTD-style only seeing next actions. so maybe i need to go back to omnifocus, which would annoy me, as i decided against buying it when i could have got it for less than $40 on beta. could still get it for $50 educational, but it seems like a lot.

i guess my to-do lists typically have 200 things in, maybe more, so nothing simpler seems much good either.

Man syncing is buggy as fuck now. Apps bought on iPhone won't upload to Mac, and iTunes spews shitloads of errors into console while trying to sync. Sometimes I get messages that "Apps X, Y and Z have not been installed", sometimes not. Lots of complaints on Apple support about it, too.

Not to mention the 3g is shit.

I expect one hell of a system update in August.

Re flickr and geotags: for some reason you need to set an option in your flickr account which tells it to take notice of geotags, otherwise it strips them out. Pretty stupid really. Can't post a link to the page that fixes it because I can't copy and paste (ON IPHONE) but it's googleable.

also i think the maps app would be a lot more useful it had a "find me" button. as such you either have to enter an address or use "directions" to situate yourself with the gps. what if i just want to see a map of where i am?

It does have an option to show where you are.
Press the cross-hatched circle in the bottom left and it will find your location.

ok top tip that should have been obvious in retrospect: if you install apps on the phone directly, when you connect to iTunes again right-click on it and choose "transfer purchases". Otherwise it don't back em up.

Aside from screen flakiness on the Voice Mail screen, no problems with the iPhone 3G syncing on Windows XP or anything thus far. I got this thing on Monday, and I'm really really happy with it.

iPod touch to be exact. Spent the last couple nights working on it, a real comedy of errors. "Oh ok, fixed that. What's this? OK got it. What?" Every step met roadblocks for some reason. Finally it turned out the FirewireGUID was wrong for some reason; I fixed that and everything started syncing perfectly.

Still no album art though.

2 Across is a really good crossword puzzle app where you can download puzzles past and present from the WSJ, the NYT (with subscription), the Onion, thinks.com and several other places.

The one thing not explained properly is how to enter a word. If you tap twice really fast, that brings out the typewriter. You can also also customize what is revealed, checked, and what isn't at your own leisure. There. Have fun.

Well, short answer is it works (NetShare). A bit of a pain to set up, and not something that I would use all the time (especially since the connection dies whenever the phone goes to sleep), but good in a pinch, and FAST on 3G.

twice now it's crashed on me horribly and refused to reload my feeds page (see above). the first time (v1.0) i had to remove it and re-download it; the second i just changed my username to xxxxxxx in settings.app, which forced it to reload, then went back and put my proper username back in.

it's the one app i use the most, and i'm fundamentally very happy with it. i mean, it was fucking FREE, and i now rely on it every single morning.

working a bit better but syncing is still funky.

i removed a lot of feeds from my iphone list on the newsgator website but it didn't remove them from my phone. really didn't want to click through every one to delete them on the phone itself.

Aye. The read/unread statuses aren't reliable, sometimes clippings don't appear properly, and NNW iPhone has 0 support for flags or re-reading read stories.

And NNW Mac plays the fuck up if unread statuses change while it's open.

is the purpose of Byline so that you can read your Google Reader feeds while offline? The app description leaves me unclear about that. Because for online reading the iPhone Google Reader page seems good to me.

Yeh, it's an offline client for Google Reader -- it also stores the entire web page of starred items, and any pages noted in yr google notebook. I prefer it to the webpage for online, too.

The Seattle Bus app is actually worth the $9.99. Only helpful if you're a King County Metro bus rider on a regular basis like :-D. You just hit "find me", and it shows you all the upcoming buses, notably how on time or late they are, which bus, and how many minutes until they arrive. Really cheap interface, but that's part of its charm (for now.)

I know other cities have the "minutes remaining until X bus" info at the stop itself, but hey I gotta take what I can take.

but i need help with mobileme/mac.com.. i have my regular mac.com email and my work email. so i want both pushed to my iphone, so i created a me.com alias that I have my work emails forwarded to. so this works fine sorta on my iphone since both sets of emails get pushed to it, but i don't have the option of sending email from that alias. just my regular mac.com address.

and on my computer, each email sent to my work email ends up in my inbox twice since i guess when it forwards to the me.com alias that in turn gets forwarded to my regular mac.com adderss which is why my phone gets all the emails and the computer gets doubles of my work emails. does this make sense?

Push email through Exchange is great, but a battery-killer. I don't get a full day's worth of power from a charge. Pretty sweet, though, especially with the Outlook calendar integration. No more syncing.

Basically (in iTunes)

1. Set up the prefs to convert songs into AAC files. I think you also need iTunes set up to "Copy Files to iTunes Music Folder When Adding to Library."
2. Select a song, and get info on it. In the "Options" tab, set the in and out points you want.
3. Convert the track to AAC. It will convert only the section you set in the options. Go back in the options of the original track and un-set the in and out points.
4. Drag the new AAC file to the desktop. Change to file extension to m4r.
5. Double-click the file on the desktop. It should now show up as a sync-able ringtone in iTunes.
6. Don't forget to change the converter prefs back to mp3, or you'll end up with a bunch of crap AAC files in your library.

Yup, there you go.

I don't think it's new, and it's not super awesome yet, but I like Feeds a lot, at least as some basic RSS feed aggregate. Feeds needs a mode to display Atoms/RSS's in reverse chronological order, and then it would already be the best RSS App out there.

Unless you guys know of a superior RSS app.

Midomi has failed to identify anything I've played for it or sung into it. (Granted, that included Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms".) Shazam, OTOH, indentified random Keri Hilson, Mary J. Blige and T.I. songs with a ton of ambient noise in the background; the only thing it hasn't been able to identify was a random acid jazz track that was only under local release in Cincinnati.

Any updated game suggestions, either free or paid? I like Trism so far.

You can play stuff into Midomi, too; it's just that you can do the same with Shazam and Shazam is more accurate, so the only reason to have Midomi is to sing songs at it and watch it flounder.

Flip the two app names, and that's my experience.

I tried out Shazam a couple times. VU's "Stephanie Says" was correctly identified in a trial run and Dust Brothers' "Finding The Bomb" was recognized despite a bunch of Top Gear sound effects on top of it.

Haven't bothered with Midomi. I haven't really bothered with either of these because I, well, almost always recognize the song.

Recent apps I've added and liked:

Mobile Fotos, which used to be called Mobile Flickr and wasn't much cop. Has had an upgrade and is now pretty great.

TubeStatus: does what it says it does, perfectly well and really simply.

Top40 - Pop charts on my phone. With itunes store preview links. Cute, although I don't know whether it's really worth having on there when the same into is easy enough to grab through safari.

Vicinity seemed handy when I first started playing with it, but I'm starting to realise that Google Mobile can do everything it does, and better.

OK, DataCase is now my most valuable purchase.

that is to say, it asks you if you're sure, but you can choose to not be asked again, but this seems to mean you won't be asked anytime you're buying updates, such as accidentally clicking on the i'm rich app. these should be separate permissions.

SimplifyMedia doesn't seem to work that well...I haven't tried it off of my own wifi (or on 3G or Edge) but here at home my iTunes library kind of choked it and it seemed like it was a resource hog. I'm wondering what sort of battery drainer it would be to stream while, say, riding down the highway for a couple of hours.

As our testers discovered, the best thing to do is to let Simplify Media build its index for a while after your initial install. After that, most information is cached for fast startup.

Oof, iphone battery life is now RINSED though, I've gone from about 80% to 20% in about 90 mins of streaming.

I give up on this app Jim. It is constantly buffering, it basically locks up my iPhone. I'm assuming this is largely because it can't grasp the reality of 35,000 songs.

I've been using an official AV cable to do iphone>iplayer>av cable>tv, and it works really nicely. But, you know, it's a bit inelegant having the phone wired into the tv without a dock to sit it in. So I bought a 3G phone dock yesterday...and video through doesn't work! Why the fuck would they do that?? Makes no sense at all, to me.

SM is working great for me. There are a few glitches here and there, but they seem to be related to the network rather than the app. My windows client has 29k songs in the library, and I've been able to access every one I've tried ON IPHONE, so long as my 3G network is functioning properly. I'm kind of astonished with this app.

I'll plan on getting SimplifyMedia once I can get an iPhone that has as long a battery life as an iPod. For now, I can live with the 16 gig limit for the culled playlists I synced.

i'll let it have another shot at indexing, because it really didn't seem too happy the first time i tried. the main problem for me will be -- TRAGIC ANALLY RETENTIVE BASTARD ALERT -- the lack of last.fm functionality: ie i won't be able to scrobble anything i play through it :)

hmm. doesn't want to get beyond 2,919 files -- the library contains > 8000.

looking at the log, i see it's reporting "error calling stat() on file" and "skipping" a lot of them. WTF?

i'd send them a bug report, but they seem awfully keen to see the entire log, and you know what? i'm not all that happy about handing over a catalogue of all the music files on my HD :)

SM is a fucking resource hog. In idle--i.e. when no iPhone is connected to my library--it is choking down 18 threads at a time and adversely affecting my system.

i just know i'm never going to use this. but still. nice idea.

also, I think my problem is that most of my tracks on iTunes are in Apple Lossless, as opposed to crappy 128 MP3s. Those are big files to push, which is why my buffering times are insane.

i dropped them a line anyway and mentioned the problems i'd had; i also asked about scrobbling support. apparently that'll come in a later update of the iPhone app, which would make this totally fuckin' awesome.
