While checking out the Generation Kill thing, I wanted to see what else HBO has in the pipeline-- and they have this show. WTF?
From wiki... True Blood is an American television series based on the Southern Vampire Mysteries books by Charlaine Harris and adapted for television by Alan Ball. The series is produced by HBO in association with Ball's own production company, Your Face Goes Here Entertainment.
The show details the fictional co-existence of vampires and humans in a small Louisiana town after Japanese-made synthetic blood – "TruBlood" – becomes available for purchase. Anna Paquin stars as Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress at a diner who falls in love with one of the vampires, Bill Compton (portrayed by Stephen Moyer).
The show will premiere on September 7, 2008.
I don't even know what to say. This sounds like a parade of "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING" jokes. That said, watch it not suck, just to spite me. But seriously. What the hell.
Anyone read these books upon which this is based? Anything to say?

that buffy fan community is probably actually a pretty valuable commodity, i know a LOOOOOT of people who loooooooved that stuff.
And most of them post here.

HBO is really grasping at straws these days. i cancelled my subscription and don't miss it. they shouldn't have passed on Mad Men when they did
― akm, Monday, 14 July 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)
Ha ha yes. They're the type of mystery paperbacks you can read in an hour, so I don't remember much except vampire feuds, and werewolves, and vampire sex.

i went to college in magnolia, ark., home of the author. met her a few times. she attends (attended?) church where my then-gf's parents did. i remember her kids running absolutely wild. she was moderately successful back then (mid-90s) but i never had a notion to read her stuff. still don't. more power to her.

I usually give a promising show 3 episodes before I call it quits, so I'll give this show one more try. I know the comparisons to Buffy are probably tired, but this show has not yet been as funny as Buffy nor as heartbreaking. The concept is good and I might give the books a try one of these days, but the dialogue is utter shit most of the time. Oh well.

― ILX MOD (musically), Friday, 10 October 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)
Last Sunday's ep was the best so far...it's taken a while for everyone to stop acting like exposition robots. My only complaint: not enough Erik the Viking vampire. Aside from that, wee! Hooray for vamp porn.
― VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 11 October 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)
I'm actually quite enjoying this show. I know it's very often overthe top and silly and everything but it is fun anyways. And this thing still hasnt reached full silly mode until they finally really acknowledge that there are werewolves (Sam I'm looking at you) and other completely batchit creatures.
― Jibe, Sunday, 12 October 2008 00:00 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, how long are they going to drag out the Sam thing? I want to see him go full Manimal ASAP.

― sad man in him room (milo z), Sunday, 12 October 2008 01:28 (seventeen years ago)
It really picks up in the 4th (?) episode. The writing is still pretty bad, but it is fun. The vampire bar was really good, and I like how they're (hopefully) laying the groundwork for more exploration of the vampire hierarchy. The flashback in last week's was really poorly handled, though.

― Tracer Hand, Monday, 27 October 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)
i bet they're as "fictional" as the vampires
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 27 October 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)
To someone who's never heard a person speak with a Louisiana accent, they sound exactly like you'd expect TV to portray people speaking with a Louisiana accent :D
― Jibe, Monday, 27 October 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)
straight out of central casting's hayseed department (except for the mumbling cajun guy, cherie).
we stopped watching after the 4th episode. it's not quite over-the-top enough to be good camp, so it's just sort of silly, and the acting is truly dreadful.

Lots of campy goodness in the show, even if it hinted at things (like the Vampire hierarchy/underground society) that it didn't really follow through on. Good fun though.

wr2 true blood, i feel like the ILXor who said he had a hard time watching the venture brothers b/c a friend of his w/ shitty taste loved it. in that everyone i know IRL who likes this show is insufferable in some major way.
also, like Ned I never had any interest in Buffy or any of its offshoots.
― Bosko Balaban Stats For Season (Eisbaer), Sunday, 26 April 2009 04:27 (sixteen years ago)
Buffy is my litmus test: if someone doesn't like it, I'll honestly question their taste. (That's not to say I have friends who have no clue who/what Buffy is and I'm sure my bestest friend would die if she knew I used this as a test. But if someone has an extensive knowledge of pop culture and doesn't like it, I'll definitely go all o0 when they dislike it. Yes, that includes you, Ned. I just don't get it.) But to compare TB with Buffy is hilarious. The only thing they share is the vampire element and that's where it ends. That said, I watched three eps back to back last night and I'll probably watch another three tonight. It's really trashy and good dirty sexeee fun. The whole point is that it's over the top and sleazy and pervy. The brother (and his eggplant erection) is also fantastic. I even love the silly name for the vamp bar. Twilight, which I'm trying to plough through, is just so exceptionally mediocre. But I'm on a trashy trip lately so what the hell I'll probably finsih this as well.

My uncles and I had a ritual going for a few weeks where we'd download and watch this show. Total catty fun, made more so by the fact that my uncle would usually download the version with the fan-made french subtitles. At the end of every episode, the subtitles always read "Enjoy! ;)" superimposed over a dead body or a woman about to be bitten.

― giovanni & ribsy (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:02 (sixteen years ago)
I saw the new ep and I'm pretty sure Lafayette is locked in for the season, otherwise I guess they would have had no reason to bring him back for only 2 episodes
― giovanni & ribsy (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)
I hope you're right! Because seriously, he is going to be an awesome vampire.
I think Sookie's supposed to still be recovering from the beating that she got last season, so her black eye/bruised face is still fading. They are keeping it real by giving her a hideously discolored face.
I'm looking forward to finding out what happens with Admiral Cain Maryann. Also this show probably has more per-capital Stunning Pectoral Displays than any other show currently on TV. Shirtless Eggs. Wowie.
― blow it out your hairdo (Jenny), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:07 (sixteen years ago)
i can't say i dislike any of the major plot lines going but the bill & sookie romance is a bit watery so i'm grateful jessica is there to mix it up a bit. jason needs to keep being mostly naked imho, i don't think we'll see any less because alan ball seems to know his audience here -- which is just as much a reason to keep lafayette in the mix as any
― giovanni & ribsy (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:18 (sixteen years ago)
curious as to jason's impending conversion experience and whether it will involve any gayness -- though it may be the wholesome christian fellowship i'm misreading / projecting onto
― giovanni & ribsy (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:31 (sixteen years ago)
Not only mostly naked by mostly naked and playing slow motion football!
xp - No, totally! I got a v. suppressed homoerotic vibe from Jason and the dumb jock on the bus together, to the point that I was basically expecting Dumb Jock to put his hand on Jason's knee or feel his pecs or something. If Alan Ball knows his audience as you say he does, perhaps there is hope.
― blow it out your hairdo (Jenny), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:36 (sixteen years ago)
honestly, I couldn't get past the first episode. I fucking hate alan ball's crash/stuff-white-people-like/dancing plastic bag bullshit; the dialogue is horrendous and the direction is club to the head hamhanded.

it's pretty unapologetic about being a melodrama campfest if that's what you mean
― giovanni & ribsy (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:46 (sixteen years ago)
No, the first 3-4 episodes are terrible then it seems to get better with each one. I thought I couldn't keep watching and now I kind of love it.

I'm not sure it's actually "good" but I like watching it
― admrl, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:55 (sixteen years ago)
It does get a lot better, I mentioned upthread last year that I gave up after 2 and a half eps, but I decided to give the rest of it a go earlier this month and it gets a whole lot more engaging. It still remains campy and all but vastly improves.
― master of karate and friendship for everyone (musically), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:55 (sixteen years ago)
Still though, I think if you are looking for more than a gory* melodramatic campfest, go in peace, child, this is not the show for you. If you can kind of embrace the melodrama and the camp, I think it's totally fun. It's one of the few shows that I am always shocked and disappointed when the episode ends.

― blow it out your hairdo (Jenny), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:56 (sixteen years ago)
i have no issues with melodrama and camp of either the Sirk or Troma variety (and it sounds like this is a hash of those); what i have issue with is Alan Ball's goddamn eye and pen. Does he continue to write and direct episodes past the first one?

forks let me be real w/ u: the whole 1st season is terrible and my reasons for watching it are pretty inexplicable except 4 that like 90% of the scenes are written so that one of the male characters is welding shirtless @ the start of it - it gets better once lizzie caplan shows up but its still pretty retarded
2nd season all two episodes of it have been totally rad tho

not sure if that is what charlaine harris intended. i mean, i dont think she is meant to be a likeable character. the books are very similar in mood in the sense that it is all very one dimensional and cartoony. still i rrrreally like it. obviously.

I think the hook is supposed to be that you are scared for Tara/Sam because Tara at least is only just own copping to the fact that something is amiss. I'm assuming a typical fairy tale reveal where we find out that Maryann's house is a House of Illusion and Tara has been living in a dumpster behind Wal-Mart and making out with a stray dog.
― blow it out your hairdo (Jenny), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)
i dunno, i'm guessing that maryann's lush life is very much material -- assuming that the cash young sam stole from her provided the initial investment for merlotte's? but this is tv so who knows. also lol @ "cape cod" -- villians be yankees

Yeah, I'm sure Maryann has something bad in mind for Tara (of the "you ate of my magic food and now you must be my slave forever" variety, maybe), but her plot arc is dragging on too long and starting to bore me. I really just want more hot male vampires doing ridiculous things.
― Maria, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 21:53 (sixteen years ago)
"you ate of my magic food and now you must be my slave forever"
Exactly. The flashback with Young Sam's Naked Buttocks had him breaking into Maryann's apartment only to find a table laden with a delicious feast, which he of course immediately started eating, and I'm like HELLO have you never read a fairy or folk tale in your life, you ridiculous dog boy????
I really just want more hot male vampires doing ridiculous things.
I would also accept more ridiculous shirtless football games. I'm kind of tired of the Bill & Sookie Fucking Musical Theme, though.

― tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 13:24 (sixteen years ago)
I just watched Sunday's ep, so SPOILER ALERT IF YOU ARE NOT CAUGHT UP WITH THE SHOWS, the following things are bugging me:
1. Get on with the Mariann storyline, already! We get it. She's a monster who makes everybody horny and, um, want to eat dirt? Now get the big reveal going so we can see the huge Supernatural Creature fight that is sure to result.
2. Sookie is a lousy best friend to Tara. I mean, Tara always cries on her birthday and Sookie is like, "Here is your gift! It is an old picture that I didn't even bother to buy a not tacky frame for, I'm going to Dallas BRB!" I just really wanted Sookie to ask Tara how she was doing, but nooooo it's just all about Sookie. Sookie, is Bill using you? Sookie, are you going to be safe in Dallas? Sookie, considering that you read minds are you really so dumb and naive???
3. Sam. Seriously, are you not going to ask this woman with the horrible, barely healing, infected looking, abuse-signalling massive injuries to her back what happened? Or maybe suggest she not jump into that fetid swimming hole with you? Or maybe not be so distracted by your own dick that you never think about checking in with her even in the most superficial, "Hey, did somebody WHIP you???" kind of way about whether her own personal physical and emotional health and well being is in okay shape?
In the interest of fairness, things that I like include: Lafayette, Eric, Jason and the Crazy Religious Cult, potential for Mad Dallas Vampire Battle Showdown.

The Mariann storyline isn't bad, it's Mariann (both as character and as actress) that are sucking the life out of the last few episodes. I like eroticism as much as the next guy but if we have to keep seeing slowed down footage of how she turns every party into an orgy, I'm going to fall asleep. Maybe it's just that she sucks at glamouring me. She has to be the most transparent flirt ever.
Sookie isn't just a lousy fried to Tara, she's a stupid, solipsistic, annoying parody of a girl. I've just about lost patience with her character. Also, as hot as I think Tara is, I'm also fed up with her tempestuous emotional trainwreck of a personality. It's childish and doesn't seem to be maturing at all. Irl, I would avoid both of these girls like the plague.
Season 2 made me drop Bill and opt for Eric.
I don't know any women watching this who haven't said the same thing.
― Le présent se dégrade, d'abord en histoire, puis en (Michael White), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)
I still like Tara, maybe just out of stubborness, but I totally agree with everything else you've said, Michael White, especially the slowed-down dirty party orgy footage. I like the idea of the Mariann storyline, but the execution is sloooooooow.
The Eric-is-better-than-Bill-now dynamic is straight out of the books, btw, so I think it's purposeful. Also they are giving Bill the worst and most ridic looking ashen complexion in the history of all Vampires, while making Eric look... better.
― she is writing about love (Jenny), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)
Also, is anybody else a little squicked out about the Lafayette/Eric relationship? The white guy keeping the black guy chained in the basement in what is for all intents and purposes a slave collar and then letting him go only to magnaminously "heal him" with his blood, but really only to keep him on a hypothetical short leash? It's doubly bothersome to me because we are all clearly supposed to be attracted to Eric. This has been nagging at me since the beginning of the season.
― she is writing about love (Jenny), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)
I still like Tara, too and I am still sympathizing with her, but she, like almost all these characters, is written perilously shallow and I am frustrated at times.
After all their many vampire years, it's odd to see Bill and Eric behave like teenagers. Eric with his 'respect mah authoritah' shtick and Bill as the well-meaning though naif rebel against it. I guess the message is that death and many, many years of experience do not keep people from being essentially thick-headed.
― Le présent se dégrade, d'abord en histoire, puis en (Michael White), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 15:27 (sixteen years ago)
I think Eric/Lafayette is supposed to squick you out, though, Jenny and it lends Eric another layer of bad-boy glamour.
Lafayette is essentially why I'm still watching this show.

― Le présent se dégrade, d'abord en histoire, puis en (Michael White), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)
OH HER yes she is AWFUL. The "I dress like a Christian tramp, make BBQ ribs, serve beers, and dance because I'm A WOMAN" scene was so absurd, but fully redeemed by Jason's strip tease fantasy (b/c the writers were acknowledging that they were trucking it totally ridic stereotypes).
― she is writing about love (Jenny), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 15:46 (sixteen years ago)
Jason is a complete and utter fool but not only is that character repulsive but, alas, she is physically repuslive to me as well - the awful hair and that dreadful smile.
I loved how the rev mentions that she used to be a vegetarian.

*spoilspoilspoil* pretty sure that daphne's scars mark her out as one of marianne's victims since her injury is the same as those rec'd by sookie and ms. jeanette, and we get to see marianne's claws come out at the end of this last ep. my first guess was that daphne was in league with marianne but now i'd predict she's looking to stop marianne, possibly with sam's help.
― little pomegranate, king of the lily (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)
Noooooooooooooo Alby is so creepy! I mean, the Rev is creepy, too, but in a cute, campy way, not in a nightmare, Alby way.
Re Elmo's comment - this is where having read the books kind of blows because absent any M. Night Shamalalalan-style twists I know where that particular plot line is headed. So far, the pattern has been for the show to take its own path to the same destination as the books. My beef about Sam's non-reaction to Daphne's scars is just a beef with Sam as a person/dog/manimal. Like, if you were about to get cuddly with someone and noticed fresh wounds/recent scars of that magnitude, wouldn't you show some concern? Even if you did turn into a dog sometimes and so therefore were familiar with the world's weirdness?

― tehresa, Thursday, 16 July 2009 08:51 (sixteen years ago)
Although the story line veers away from the books, it does help a lot if you have read the books. For example it makes sense that the orgy scenes drag on and on (as people here but elsewhere tend to say, when they haven't read the books). What is a little confusing is how they used Tara: in the books she is only introduced in the third book (and more in book 4).
That is the whole point! To show how awful she is.
No, I find her very endearing and in a way an interesting phenomenon. She's turned in a time when vampires are accepted and can also live on synthetic blood. They have to grapple with their new state in a very different way than the old vampires. I find it interesting. Only sad thing is that it is not really explored that much. This differs from Buffy for example, there's not really that much depth to the whole show (nor the books for that matter). They hint at it, but never really explore it that much. See, the fact that what I am perceiving as a slave ownership narrative is supposed to increase the appeal of the slave owner in the equation is like really unpleasant.
I never looked at it that way (because the whole sucking blood is about healing 'n' eroticism). I mean, shit, Lafayette is "kept" because he abused a vampire (drained him and sold the blood). He'll never be turned (as some assume) because as a human he's much more useful. Lafayette owes Eric big time.
Tara is an abused woman. She's battling emotionally. She has no way of connecting with anyone, aside from Sookie (who's like her sister). She's obviously trying (see the exorcism, Eggs, MaryAnn) but gets fucked over every time (same people). How would you deal? She has little going for her really. And now, thanks to MaryAnn, she obviously fucked up a lot by doing these orgies at Sookie's house. I doubt the latter will be happy with it. But that's the whole poin for Maryanne: she's trying to win Tara back.
Sookie? I like her. She's snappy, she's girlie,... I would probably avoid her like the plague as well but onscreen I kinda like her. She seems a bit of a slut in the books though. Christ she's got it on with several guys in the space of about two years? Yeah, I guess so. But then she has some catching up to do, I guess. :-)

Ha! I know! The "Mariann in Gran's clothing" was a pretty huge hint. Have none of these people ever read fairy tales??? HELLO LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD? Also, the j/o in the bathtub scene was so awkward I could barely watch it.
Also, this show is going to have to get way worse before I ever stop watching it because it is still hilarious and I think there's going to be a big payoff.
Also, Lafayette is really pretty!
Personally I think she's a bit of a slut (based on the books I have read, not from the show.)
I got the impression that she started out pretty chaste (I remember reading about how she had a tough time making out with ppl while reading their minds (kind of OTM, really)) until vampires came along and then she really got her slut on. And good for her, since hot sex seems to be a special vampire skill. Does it seem to you that the plot line is starting to follow more closely to the books now?

In Greek mythology, maenads were the female followers of Dionysus, the most significant members of the Thiasus, the retinue of Dionysus. Their name literally translates as "raving ones". Often the maenads were portrayed as inspired by him into a state of ecstatic frenzy, through a combination of dancing and drunken intoxication.[1] In this state, they would lose all self control, begin shouting excitedly, engage in uncontrolled sexual behavior, and ritualistically hunt down and tear animals (and sometimes men and children) to pieces, devouring the raw flesh.

OMG Bill's maker in the 30s was insanely fugly. Those eyebrows! I know it was the thing but god almight she didn't pull it off. Well, she pulled'em off but not pulled it off very well.
She doesn't read minds all the time because it's extremely tiresome. I love how she tested him (at the start) and he was all the time going "oh I love her" times a million. Like you KNEW it had to be fake.
If you've read the books and still like Godrich, you have one sick mind. I keep picturing him to belt out an emo anthem. Yuck.
I did like Lafayette's lines when it came to describing Eggs. "Nothing good can come out of something so pretty."
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 08:49 (sixteen years ago)
What did he say? Satan in a pretty hat? Lafayette seems to be getting some of his vim and vigor back, which is nice to see.
I didn't notice the unusual gun because I'm gun-dumb, but I kind of figured Jason wasn't dead, but I'm happy with the confirmation.
I think that Eric ran to the FotS and then opened Godrich's cage and let him at Gabe. Although Godrich definitely looked way less white in the scene where he turned Eric, to the point that I'm still not entirely convinced that is Godrich. But I guess it is? That's just some weird white washing.
Haha Frank Sobatka

It's true love for True Blood couple Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer. The two are engaged to be married, reps for both actors on the HBO vampire series confirm to PEOPLE exclusively.

I was mentally drawing a parallel between True Blood and Herschell Gordon Lewis-style gore last night, sort of a "so bad it's good over-the-top camp-gore horror" kind of parallel, and then lo! It was a regular Blood Feast right there in Sookie's dining room.
Random: There was an awful lot of dudes throwing/pushing/punching women in this episode. Tara is so damn dumb as hell I can barely even stand it and I am really looking forward to the day that Sookie and the Vampires come back to Bon Temps and kick some ass. I'm halfway through season two of The Wire (first viewing, so pls no spoilers, although I think I know what happens to Frank :() and I can't dis-equate Andy and Frank Sobotka which is a little LOL and also a little *sob*. I absolutely LOVE the Sookie Stackhouse books and True Blood. It's all about tackiness, trashiness and sexxeeeeness. I do think that Bill is a major turnoff in True Blood. He seems so... lame. The way he was chatting with Jason outside. Urgh. I really wish Sookie would dump the loser and get it ON with Eric. The way he can make a wifebeater actually nice proves what a studmuffin he is. hah. The hymen thing was bit silly - come on, women lose their hymen a lot earlier than their first time - but it was in a way a nice touch. Maybe she was faking it so Hoyt would prep her with some oral sex? hehehe
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 19:11 (sixteen years ago)

― Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 19:17 (sixteen years ago)
I recently read somewhere that there is no universal hymen standard for women. Some time way back when, the hymen got moralized/fetishized as the ultimate signifier of maidenhood, which is absurd because of all the naturally occurring hymen variation. (Am working on my epic song cycle for the ukulele called The Hymen Variations, btw.)
Maybe she was faking it so Hoyt would prep her with some oral sex?
Heh, I think I even said out loud to the TV, "You know, there's a lot of other things you can do in the sack..."
Eric is superfly, but I'm not sure I can agree with you on the tank top though, Nath... haha. Also, don't you think they are setting things up nicely with Bill and Lorena???
― she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 19:23 (sixteen years ago)
Oh god, it's so obvious. Also I have been wondering how the Bombdiggity Luke thing will play out. I'm saying, judging from the books, that Godrich will sacrifice himself?
The lines were all pretty cute. "what did judus do to you?" hahah Oh Jason. "Grow a BRAINCELL" and shoots paintbomb on his nuts.

no the connection is sam: they had a thing going on in the past and he stole some money. now she's looking for revenge. but she's a maenad, so basically feeding off people who party/drink/do drugs. in the books she just settled there and had some crazy ass fun. not sure if she had a thing with sam (in the books). think so, but i don't think there was some really complex revenge plot.
xpost no, he didn't. looked a bit like it, but definitely wasn't. still, though, he looked ASS. and that burn scene was god damn awful. i can understand they didn't wanna spend a lot of money on just ten seconds, but what the FUCKIO. then again maybe, like me, they thought godrich wasn't worth spending money on. hah
i have also given up my conviction that blonde guys can never be cute. eric, you showed me the error of my twisted thoughts. now can you please drop sookie and shack up with me?
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 21:58 (sixteen years ago)
not sure if she had a thing with sam (in the books)
She did; the kind of ran around in the woods together, with the manaed in pig form, IIRC. Daphne in the show is kind of a conflation of the manaed and another passing Merlot's waitress. Or two. They were hard to keep track of.
Last ep was waaaaaaaaay too emo. Get with the VAMPIRE v. MANAED WAR, plz. Also it was totally uncool of Eric to trick Sookie into drinking some of his blood using some bullshit junior high "but if you don't at least jerk me off, I'll get blue balls"-esque ruse. Between that and the "keeping a black man in a slave collar chained in my basement" thing, I'm kind of not feeling Eric, even though I know I'm supposed to.
That scene with them two nekkid when Sookie put her tiny little head on Eric's thick, massive neck made Eric look like a total freakish giant.

Oh, I did like Lafayette as the avenging hero and the redemptive possibility of Tara's mom being the one to take on Mariann. Also Sam showing up naked on Andy's doorstep had a lot of unexplored LOL potential, I thought. ― she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 22:18 (sixteen years ago)
Oh, so I think the thing that is frustrating me is that the writers are taking SO LONG to line up the pieces - Tara and Eggs keep having occasional flashes of insight into the WTFery in which they are soaking, and now Lafayette and Tara's mom teaming up, and then now also Sam and Andy teaming up, and every time another piece slides into place but then NOTHING HAPPENS I just kind of grab my head and start yelling, "WHY? WHY?" at the TV.
Still, there is enough in the show to make me continue to watch/enjoy it, like Sarah and Steve's TV meltdown, and Hoyt declaring that he is a GROWN ASS MAN right before grabbing half of the toasted cheese and potato chip sandwich that his lolracist mother made him, while he was berating her for being a career hater. Good stuff.
― she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 22:27 (sixteen years ago)
Oh the makeup on Bill was definitely done to make him look less attractive. It's just not done that well. I am really digging Eric: his whole plotting and scheming is just very cute. The breakdown in front of Godrich was also endearing even though beyond silly: I'll stay with you. Yeah right. As if.
Okay, I gotta admit that I forgot who Andre is. Is the cowboy vamp? He died, I know, but I couldn't recall if that was indeed him (or not).
Re the books: I am reading the second to last book. It's been consistently good (fun to read). Apparently the author has just signed a contract for another three books.

any theories on the queen/bloody foot at the end of the ep? i guess book readers will know.

Evan Rachel Wood, right?
― The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Monday, 24 August 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)
The manaed plot is so divergent from the books that it's a whole different ball game, and I can't remember the circumstances in which the Queen gets introduced in the books, although I know it isn't like this. My theory about the bloody foot is that the Queen is having a snack or maybe having an Elizabeth Bathory spa treatment.
I was really excited that so many things happened!
― she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 03:32 (sixteen years ago)
my first thought was also snack but then i thought 'oh it can't be that easy, can it?' or are they trying to trick us by thinking the obvious trick is too obvious?
― tehresa, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 03:42 (sixteen years ago)
Pretty sure she's snacking. But I am not looking forward to Wood portraying the queen as the character is about 15 yrs old in the books. She was introduced much furter on though, when she was going to marry a king from another state and Sookie needed to use her ability to secure her position or sth. (Sorry daughter kept me awake this week so I can't think straight anymore.) I can't remember which state. Kentucky? No, not that one, I think. In the books it was quite interesting: when Harris finished the book, Katrina happened so she wasn't sure whether she needed to rewrite it or not. In the end she kept it (and used Katrina as part of the story in the following book). I would hate they will give away what Sookie is through that touching scene (with MaryAnn).
It's so obvious that Bill will be dumped or set aside: through dialogue, makeup,... I'm betting that'll be in the next season when Eric....
Apparently they will also introduce Hadley much earlier as well.
I do like the series a LOT even though I was a bit let down by this episode. It was all a bit wish washy with the Maenad orgies. I did like Jason and Sookie into town seeing all the devastation.
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 07:04 (sixteen years ago)
Also Sam already telling Andy about the Supe world: so different from the books in which the weres and supes do NOT tell the humans they exist.
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 25 August 2009 07:05 (sixteen years ago)
I think it could be that easy - that it's a snack. I've noticed that's a pattern with TB that they will end an episode on a cliff hanger that it turns out is not really as big a deal as it looks.
I loved the Queen's house. I need the number of her interior decorator.

I'm much happier with this episode (compared with the lacklustre previous one). Jason and Andy are a great couple. The Tara breakout was a bit silly and improbable but then uh this is not realistic. Bill seemed a lot more attractive but that's probably because there were no scenes for him with Sookie. The romantic scenes wit him and Sookie are so obvious a setup: paving the way to a breakup. The Queen is interesting but not worked out how I want her to be: she's too old (compared to the books, in which she's 15, making her a really intrigueing character). But you can tell Evan Rachel Wood is enjoying herself. Hadley's a nice addition and an obvious setup for the next season (together with the Queen's fascination with her). Eric is just ROWR. All in all quite a fun ep.

i feel like the "really old powerful vampire that was made as a teenager and looks really young forever" device is nice, but they got a lot of mileage out of it w/ Godric, fine w/ me if they don't do it w/ the queen too

See in the books they never portray Godric that way. He's just a big ole pervy Vamp who regrets his cruel actions so goes on a suicide mission. I love the death scene. Totally awesome. "Sacrifice myself?" haha But the rest was all a bit meh, wasn't it? In hindsight I do still have to admit I totally love this show. But not for the story line - Ball made a mistake with making the MaryAnne storyline central - but for the atmosphere. The whole Southern Gothic thing is so freaking awesome.
Totally. I squirmed when I saw him with the queen. When is he gonna give up the queen, move to Belgium and shack up with me? Answer: nevah. Ah well. I do like Hadley though even though different from the book.

^^^Totally, Nathalie. I even said to Jeff last night that Ball picked the wrong story line to focus on for this season, and that he should have done more vamp drama in Dallas.
I got some LOLs out of last night's ep, especially, "You may have your faults Andy, but at least you got pants on." I was shocked and then bummed when Jason capped Eggs. :( Loved and, much to my shame, did not foresee, Sam as a white bull killing Marianne (GOOD RIDDANCE SHEESH). But yeah, overall, pretty meh. And yet... I am totally looking forward to next season, especially if they're going where I think they're going with Bill's disappearance.

I read that interview yesterday - I srsly hope he is kidding when he says that Eric is just a villain and nothing else. I have to believe he's fucking with us all, because clearly in S2 Eric has shown more than just one side. I also was so pissed at that answer that I commented on that interview (something I'd never done).
I said "ALAN BALL: KNOW THIS NOW - IF YOU MAKE S3 FULL OF ERIC FAIL, I WILL QUIT YOU."
I am such a dumb fangirl. But I know it at least.
― homosexual II, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 14:14 (sixteen years ago)
I liked the way they handled the Maryann thing in the first half of the episode, let there be some denouement, and then set up a few plots for next season -- so many shows screw up attaining that kind of balance in season finales
― Alex, Lord Autogoon (some dude), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)
I think they did the same thing for last season's finale too.

sigh.
heterosexual female would also like more vampire queen just bc it was awesome aesthetically even if she can't act for shit.

Late to the party, but have to say that imo season 2 was *vastly* better than S1 and I liked that well enough as it was - better made, more fun, and the whole expansion into the wider world of vampires was great. I'd agree that the Maryann arc ran out of steam towards the end, but the final ep was fine by me and the middle stretch of episodes this time out (esp the crazy church stuff) were all superbly entertaining. Really looking fwd to season 3.
― Bill A, Wednesday, 16 September 2009 21:11 (sixteen years ago)
i hope they have a better story arc for season 3. I thought the church stuff was really good and they squandered it too soon.

x-post
Hahahaha no I mean he's really got the whole "southern jock who peaked in high school" thing pretty much down. It's a pretty universal archetype but he nails a particular southern variant on it.
Also, he's one of the few actors on the show whose southern accent sounds fairly authentic. (Hollywood almost never gets that shit right.)
I was really shocked to learn the dude playing him was Australian!
― huh (latebloomer), Friday, 18 September 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)
Funny, since he's Australian, isn't he?
Universal? We don't have this Jock type here at all. But I do like your take on it. So yeah.

I love the way you have all fingered Eric (poor choice of words, sorry) as the real hunk of this show. You're bang on the money. He's like Nocturno Culto.
Bill, on the other hand, is comically square - he reminds me of the vegetarian sharks in Finding Nemo. But I love this show, it's kitchen sink sensationalism. It's got it all. It veers chaotically from Mad Max to Roots to Cheers and beyond. For me the highlights - comic and erotic - invariably occur around those vampires who are unabashed vampires.
― moley, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 09:48 (sixteen years ago)
OK my girlfriend completely disagrees with me. She reckons it's Bill over Eric any day (her way of putting it was a little spicier). So there you go. She says 'He cares, yet he eats'. Ow she's biting me!

― Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 07:39 (fifteen years ago)
Me, too, Nath! I hated Guilty Pleasures! I have a high tolerance for trashy novels but holy damn, that was terribly written.
The Bill/Sam slash fiction was kind of awesome. I'm not mad at Tara because she's been through a lot. I'd probably try to kill myself, too, if I spent most of the summer possessed by a murderous manead, eating people's hearts and boxing with my boyfriend, only to wake up and find said boyfriend shot through the head, and then having to sit with my head on my awful, horrible mother's lap while some idiot preacher babbled at me. I do hope the writers don't make her too pitiful this season, because I think she really deserves to rise up and be badass again.
― sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 12:40 (fifteen years ago)
yep this show is still total trash, but such guilty entertaining trash (with lots of wonderful titties). i think the show did get a lot better in season 2, though i preferred the godric arc to maryanne, and the stephen root story to most everything in season 1
i actually like Tara but am worried they're going to put her through the same wringer they did for the first two seasons, which i am kind of tired of already, if that makes any sense
evan rachel wood IS kind of terrible here but i think just the right kind of terrible for this show; she's certainly no worse than Pam ("lesbian weirdness" line was fantastic)

tara mindraping would be yeah so unnecessary that i feel they must be going somewhere with it - she will fall into evil passion love with captor dude and perhaps even build to a climax where she's on the verge of becoming a vamp as this big solution to her emotional woes - she will opt for humanity at the last second, stake captor dude, fall in love with sergeant stackhouse who will mistakenly think he's saved the day again probably
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 10:02 (fifteen years ago)
based on the books, the vampire is mainly fucking with tara to get the info he needs (for his boss). i think he's AWESOME. i know he's an asshole, but i still like him. i do hope the pack of weres are not gonna reeanact the scenes from tbe books because, in the books, it was gruesome and twisted what they did with the women. :-( then again some of the scenes in the series are pretty WAH as well.

Something about this season doesn't feel right. The pace, or... something. Anyway, I was such a hardcore TB fangirl last summer during season 2 but there's something missing for me this season. I also think Bill's situation is weird--it just doesn't seem in character for him to give up so easily. I know he's probably got something cooked up his sleeve.
Also, as usual, needs more Eric times one thousand. Alcide is hot but he's no Eric.

Yeah, sorry for the sarcasm. It's just that I do find all the "oh, in the books they do this, and there's a bit in the books that you haven't got to yet where this happens, so let's see how the series handles that" stuff a bit, well, spoilery.
― trishyb, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 08:01 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i don't seek out book spoilers but i don't really care when i stumble upon them because i never feel any real suspense with the show. like every other episode ends with a "the creature is about to attack!" cliffhanger but i'm like yeah whatever get on with it.
it does crack me up when showbiz blogs are all "we have reports from a mole on set that they were shooting a scene with actor 1 and actor 2 standing over a grave WHAT COULD IT ALL MEAN" like they seriously don't know there are books.

Finished the first season tonight - definitely picked up toward the end - for a few episodes in the middle it felt like Tara and Sookie being as shrill as possible for long stretches.
Redhead vampire looks like she's going to be hilarious.

I think the vamp who digs tara is fucking AWESOME. my husband thinks he's psycho. and he is! but in such a fantastic way. i absolutely love the dude. even tara is getting to be more interesting.
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 19 July 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)
he's basically a rapist. still, interesting and kind of funny. and threatening too, which none of the other vampires have been on the show, really, which is why I think it was starting to get a little dull.
sam's family situation got more interesting as well.
― akm, Monday, 19 July 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)
new added zany to franklin just makes me think of spike from buffy - meh tbh ("will you be my... VAMPIRE BRIDE" so predictable & so enjoyable though)
<3 lafayette & jesus!!
still don't care abt samfam sitch or jessica/hoyt zzz. when are they gonna reveal who arlene's baby is by or should i have remembered that from s2?
dunno what this krystal girl's all about but jason is still surprisingly amusing even when by now he really really shouldn't be
eric as teen viking kurt cobain - ZOMG awesome - not so sure about the turquoise sweater though
already so fucking bored of sookie's hadoukens or whatever, plz spare us the backstory
― r|t|c, Monday, 19 July 2010 23:59 (fifteen years ago)
franklin's lol im good at textin baby love u 4eva shit is dumm but i like him as a character - hes basically just a really smart really dangerous animal which seems appropriate - now that tara knows shes swimming with sharks that story is less depressing & more interesting
every single thing in bon temps is boring but samfam is both boring and gross i wish theyd bring jessica to jackson bcuz a) she is ~amazing~ and b) i wanna see her around other vamps
p sure this show is just stealing scenes/ideas from porno @ this point

Yeah, but up until Sunday's episode, I was getting sick of his shtick as well. Now that Tara's figured out how to play him a bit, maybe her storyline will pick up. Like everyone else, I could do without the constant battering of Tara's character. She's more fun when she's using her brain and her free will.
Couldn't really figure out why Eric the Teenage Viking spent so much time faffing around during the werewolf attack instead of helping his dad. He didn't come out of that particularly well. Maybe that's the point.

Maybe Eric thought that wearing a tight turquoise sweater to a gay monarch's house when he wanted a favour might be a good idea?

― r|t|c, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 16:28 (fifteen years ago)
I am normally pretty annoyed about the super sexualized violence against women in this show, but I have to be honest that after about the fifth time Sookie screamed "BEEEYILLLL" and "I'M NOT GOING TO LEAVE HIM" and ESPECIALLY after had the nerve to tell Tara that "two wrongs don't make a right" when she was understandably reluctant to save Bill after Bill left her to die, I was kind of hoping that they would take a total left turn and have Bill just kill her outright.
I laughed when Lafayette told Tara and Alcide to stop cussing at her, though. Ha.
Eric will change the sweater now that he's done farting around with Russell and has Pam back.

i cant believe i just called the charlaine harris books "canon"
― homosexual II, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 20:31 (fifteen years ago)
I know! That's one thing I didn't like in the episode: the chance that they remain together. I don't know, I think they'll keep'em together. Wish they wouldn't though, but I think the general public might want to and prefers to see them as such because they are a couple in real life.
My husband says Harris stole everything from the Anita Blake books.
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 20:34 (fifteen years ago)
Charlaine Harris is Virginia freaking Woolf compared to Laurell K. Hamilton. The Anita Blake books are nearly unreadable.
― no gut busting joke can change history (Jenny), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 20:35 (fifteen years ago)
I have heard they are very very bad from several sources. I'm glad I don't work in a public library so I don't have to deal with them.
― ô_o (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)
I tried to read the first book in the series because I really liked the Sookie books, cheesy and ridiculous though they were, and I was looking for something similarly fluffy/supernatural, and I could not even finish the first book. It just made no sense. I couldn't figure out what the hell was even going on. Like one minute they are in a stairwell and the next Anita Blake is being held captive in a basement and about to get raped by a rat and I'm like... how did they get into the basement and what happened to that other person (or vampire? I don't knowwwwwww) who was with her? Just, shoddy, horrible writing AND there were a ton of grammar and spelling mistakes in the book. Give me a fucking break.
Also, I don't think that AB will keep Bill and Sookie together. They started characterizing Bill as a humorless jerk (and seemed to make him look less attractive) while giving Eric great lines and also making him look super hot halfway through last season. I think this was to prepare the viewing audience for Sookie and Bill's break up. Plus, I think the pro-Sookie and Eric contingent is pretty strong. Eric is wildly popular and Sookie is supposed to be the person with whom we the viewers identify (blech) so we all want to see Sookie get it on with Eric as part of the fantasy/wish-fulfillment aspect of the show.
― no gut busting joke can change history (Jenny), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 20:42 (fifteen years ago)
That whole fairy sequence was like... that was supposed to be like moderately campy, right?
I can't believe we're already seven fucking episodes in. I mean, I'm all for slow pacing and stuff but this show is ridiculous. It's like sloooooooowwwwwwly going up the chainlift and then WHOOOOOOOOOOSH DOWN and a cobra roll and a loop and a few hills and then back to the station, come back next season.

Jesus, that's some awful photoshopping there.
Loved Eric and Pam's touching little scene where he basically tells her to vamp up and start her own brood, because he might not be around much longer after what he's been up to. But yes, I just find all of Jason's scenes really boring now, partly because they don't seem (so far, anyway) to tie into anyone else's story. He's just running around out there all by himself, making a mess of everything.

― I know that the man pees inside the woman (silby), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:15 (fifteen years ago)
Haha
Oh, I thought Lala and Jesus's Excellent Adventure was a little weird, but I guess they were just setting the scene for them to be wizards or something, so that could pay off eventually I suppose.
I take back what I said about Sookie being a better friend to Tara. I wasn't paying that much attention to that part of the ep and I thought that she did something more than just be like, "Oh, my bf left you to be repeated raped until your death? Here's a hug. Where's BEEEEE-YULLL????" Ugh. Sookie sucks.
But, you know, as the show moves forward and diverges more from the books (did Sam have a seedy criminal past in the books? I can't remember), it seems like Sook is less and less the main character or even the person with whom A. Ball and friends expect the audience to identify. Maybe that's wishful thinking, I dunno.
― Jenny, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)
Speaking of the books, Crystal was named Crystal in the books but I don't think that they made meth in Hot Shot, although really, between her being named Crystal and the town being named Hot Shot, it would have been ridiculous NOT to put a meth lab there.

about the only thing that could improve this show is if anna paquin was suddenly stricken with one of those rare diseases with impossibly long names that renders her unable to speak, and therefore unable to act, ever again.

I kind of agree with the AV Club though, that it would be good to just have some more "normal" humans around. I liked Lafayette the way he was. And at least Sookie's fairy friends seem to be more Tuatha de Danann than Tinkerbell.
― trishyb, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)
I think Anna does in fact do a good job at being/playing Sookeh. I mean, READ the freaking books, she's annoying.
It was pretty obv that Lafayette had something going on cause his mom *sensed* things. She's probably drugged up because she saw shit and people didn't like that or something.
Yes, Jason asked what Hoyt thought of Crystal.
And so right about Sam being a dick being GREAT!
I totally obsess over this show. Love it way too much. lol

is arlene really only seven to eight weeks pregnant?
― coco b ware (cozen), Sunday, 29 August 2010 09:16 (fifteen years ago)
from wikianswers:
Double cousins are formed when two siblings from one family marry two siblings from another family, and both couples have children. For example, Jane and Elizabeth are sisters. Tom and David are unrelated brothers. Jane married Tom and have a daughter, Sarah. Elizabeth married David and had a son, George. George and Sarah would be double cousins.
It is against the law for Sarah and George to marry in many but not all places, as they are first cousins
― itsinthetrees, Monday, 30 August 2010 05:16 (fifteen years ago)

Never truly took to Arlene until this pregnancy story... Think I fell for the vulnerability, but I like her now.
Pam is getting greater by degrees too, I really like those small moments when Eric tells her to man up.
Want lots more of Lala and his mom. alfre is the shit.

Double cousins = kinda like seven brides for seven brothers stuff, no?
― VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 06:38 (fifteen years ago)
The vamp master/kin relationships have been bright spots in this season - not just Eric/Pam, but even Bill/Jessica had surprising chemistry in their brief scenes. It's already been said, but when you take a lot of the characters in this show outside of directly dealing with Sookie and Bill, the cast can actually work pretty well together

I do tend to agree, Sookeh is turning into the least fave character. I always loved Pam, esp in the books. I like how she dresses when not working in the club.
And E is not gonna die, please tell me he isn't. (Of course he isn't, I know, cause he's way too popular.)
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 11:39 (fifteen years ago)
That popularity could be what kills the character in the end though. Just hope he doesn't decide to head off in pursuit of a lucrative film career.

Hoyt and Jessica prolly my favorite thing atm.
Sookeh is annoying as hell but I honestly don't understand why she doesn't just kick Bill & Eric in the balls & tell them both to gtfo. It's like she likes being batted around like a tennis ball.
Eric better not die. Bill without Eric would be super dullsville.
I saw a quick shot of Alpo or whatever his name the hot werewolf man coming back for the finale. Yay. I like him best.

Alpo/Alcide maybe the best part of that episode, and he was barely in it.
WTF kind of finale was that? Loosely ties up lame/boring storylines..zzz
Was really hoping for some Erik/Sookie action. But nooooo.
I can't stand the werepanther/Jason storyline. Tara runs away, big woop. Sookie goes to fairytown...shrug. Sam/Toby...tired of that. Jesus is a witch. Saw that coming.
What next, an Odo character that shapeshifts into chairs & lamps and sleeps in a bucket?
I love this show but cmon. Storytime! Quit showing off yr characters.

True Blood is losing itself in its peripheral characters. They used to be funny walk-on parts but have expanded into subplots and overall the whole thing feels disjointed. During last night's finale, I kept yelling at the TV everytime Jason or fucking Arlene showed up on the screen. I do, however, care deeply about Terry's armadillo Felix. I also seem to give a quarter of a shit about Lafayette - everyone else, though: GTFO.
It was very disappointing to see the action with Sookie/Russell/Bill/Eric only to cut to Jason trying to save some mangy methhead trashy were panthers. It's very disappointing because Jason had such a great storyline last season.
The lowest point: Sam. Way to assassinate and destroy one of the best characters (IMO). Sam is and has been The Good Guy up until this point. Even in Season 2, after being tortured by Mary Ann and having his heart stomped upon by Daphne, he still didn't go apeshit and decide to shoot his brother. I do not buy it at all that he would react the way he is reacting. No way. Worst writing of all time. If you can't do anything with Sam, then I'd rather he shrink into the background than become a crazed psycho. Also another low point: Tara's hair. I actually laughed out loud when she announces," I just needed a change!"
The highest point: The big Beel reveal. Finally, Bill is revealed to be the manipulative twat we all knew he was! Or, that I *hoped* he was... so that he could move aside so that Eric can swoop in. Or Alcide. Anything but Beel. He was the creepiest of creeps this episode, and he can't even successfully pull off killing Eric, which makes me believe he can't and won't succeed in killing off Sophie Ann. The part where Eric was leaning in the doorway picking cement out of his hair was amazing. Thank you Eric for not giving a shit and asking for your phone back! <3 you and Pam.
Overall, nothing was tied up and it was extremely underwhelming.
― homosexual II, Monday, 13 September 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah the Bill reveal was great. He's just getting creepier and creepier as we know more about him. Love it.
And I agree about Sam. They've stomped his character totally.

― jeff, Monday, 13 September 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)
yeah what a whimper from a show that had some amazing wtf cliffhanger episode endings this season.
also don't know how they went from nonstop maenad orgies to fairielande or from jason as bruce campbell to jason as king of some toothless methpanthers without someone in the room saying, hey guys maybe this is kinda lame?
the beel reveal was the only part i really liked mostly because it continues in the classic TB tradition of making no sense whatsoever.

the only thing keeping hope alive is that O'Hare will be back next season at some point (if that wasn't already incredibly obvious by the way they handled it) but yeah, i'm in a similar boat
i was admittedly entertained by the big bill heel turn and sookie's random bout of sadism with talbot's guts, but so i mean, really, the sam, jason, tara, lafayette, and arlene storylines that got SO MUCH time really didn't have anywhere to go
― Nhex, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 01:36 (fifteen years ago)

anyone who has read the books: how close is this following them?
this season has felt like they were putting the pieces in place, and yet I don't feel like they know where they're going.
― a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:32 (fifteen years ago)
This season was mostly horrible and I will not be watching. My wife is just going to tell me if anything good ever happens, just like she did with Lost and I do for her with current affairs.
― Nano McPhee (admrl), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:32 (fifteen years ago)
the wiccan lady's coming back too, but at least it makes a little sense if they're really gonna do this witch thing i guess
from what i skimmed of wikipedia, they've been drawing stuff from different books for the various seasons - so for instance though this season was based mostly on book 3, crystal didn't actually show up until book 4 and the fairy thing didn't get revealed until book 8, and so on

I hope there's a faery/werewolf war. And that Lafayette magiks Arlene's baby into a leprechaun that terrorizes the town & starts a blood war with the werepanthers that kills everyone except Hoyt, Jessica, Alpo, Eric & Sookeh. And Pam.
The end.

― VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:36 (fifteen years ago)
Oh and Jason as deputy dawg was stupid.
Best Jason part this season was the brief sideline with that football player kid. Everything else with him has felt like borderline Dukes of Hazzard crap minus a cool car
― VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:38 (fifteen years ago)

all take everyone here's word that jason's storyline is stupid bcuz all i can focus on when hes on screen is how much time he must spend working out
i felt bad for the actress playing the werepanther because they made her look so ugly all the time

lolol Wasn't it like a big ole chandelier type thing? How crazy was that? Honestly I ain't buying this show much anymore. I do hope they get their shit together because this last ep was totally not making sense. Why the hell would Jason stay and help out the Hotshotter if Crystal Meth girl ran away? And no way did Sam shoot his brother dead. Ain't buying it at all. Tara hopefully moves far away and never returns. Man, I hated her whimpering. Also, when it serves them, Sookeh can suddenly use her faerie powers. Deus ex machina my big fat ass. And that sadistic garbage disposal scene was WAH?!? I mean it did not make sense at all how she reacted.
They better get the Sookeh and Eric scene next season. And Dennis. Otherwise I think I am bailing out. Meh.

I enjoyed it, but I always enjoy the first couple. I get bored, stop watching, then catch up later, and find myself reasonably amused though I can also say that it's not very good. I'm well past the point of expecting anything more from it though.
― Gukbe, Monday, 27 June 2011 05:44 (fourteen years ago)
I mean I expected very little considering the disaster that was the latter half of last season, there are still too many characters taking screen time away from Eric but yeah the time jump was useful for getting the show out of the mud.

the disaster that was the latter half of last season
disagree with this, last season was great all the way through; the previous season was the one that got on my nerves.
this was cool. time jump was good since I think the past seasons all went bang-bang-bang right up against each other, like, only six months had passed since the beginning of the show or some shit.
― akm, Monday, 27 June 2011 07:04 (fourteen years ago)
- still having to care about werepanthers
i laughed out loud when he drove into panthertown in his truck and they all warily emerged like morlocks seeing the sun for the first time - jason definitely deserves better than a werepanther b-plot though, hes the show's real heart imo
when we got the reveal re: bill being king i was like yes, yes!!!! i loved the montage of him and eric both giving speeches, it made me hope for some kind of political campaigning subplot like brendan gleeson had in gangs of new york
i'd also be perfectly happy if this New Bill stays this way but im afraid there will be some lame backstory reveal that will turn him back into old anguished bill

i was gettin kinda tired of eric last year cuz they were making him too soft, but he had a great Eric Moment this week: walking into fangoria or w/e, removing the mic clip from pam, taking her seat and saying action - it was so unnervingly smooth that you just had to go 'damn'

― owenf, Thursday, 7 July 2011 06:27 (fourteen years ago)
"goblins casting magic missile!"
that one throwaway line kinda turned me around on the whole fairy/magic throwing issue, i decided to just suspend disbelief and roll with it. like as if it were an especially prurient 60's exploitation flick or something and i decided to just laugh along with the goofy bits so i could fully enjoy the many "good parts" that came with it

― σ( ~̀..́~)σ -*TOT MOM*- (Lamp), Thursday, 7 July 2011 16:19 (fourteen years ago)
i feel like the size of the ensemble and the pace of the show helps it not be too dragged down by the characters that tend to be terminal buzzkills. even Tara's getting a little out of her perpetual victim rut this season, there's always hope!
― some dude, Thursday, 7 July 2011 16:22 (fourteen years ago)
im really looking fwd to tara's storyline this season! & youre right, as tedious as sams storyline looks to be they wont actually devote all that much time to it, it was more that i was just hoping from the first episode that hed be chill for a season, bang some other shifter chix w/o getting them killed, down @ the ranch.
― σ( ~̀..́~)σ -*TOT MOM*- (Lamp), Thursday, 7 July 2011 16:28 (fourteen years ago)
i felt like the size of the ensemble was what was killing the show last year - subplot bloat was getting worse and worse (alan ball disease), and i think the time skip was a recognition of this
the 2nd ep gave me a lot of hope for taras storyline, since she was back in sassy repartee mode instead of perpetual victim mode (i hate how the actress quivers her bottom lip whenever she's doing an emotional scene)
i hope tommy ends up doing something fun, i like that kid
― Ayatollah Colm Meaney (Princess TamTam), Thursday, 7 July 2011 16:41 (fourteen years ago)
yeah the ensemble can definitely be TOO much but i like the show a lot more when i think of all those characters and their various zany adventures rather than just boiling it down to the adventures of sookie & co.
― some dude, Thursday, 7 July 2011 16:44 (fourteen years ago)
oh yeah, definitely. the show benefits from mixing it up in the right places, giving you a break from the sookie stuff right when you need it, etc.
― Ayatollah Colm Meaney (Princess TamTam), Thursday, 7 July 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)
i felt like the size of the ensemble was what was killing the show last year
i think the size of the cast isnt a problem, its the urge to give them all storylines? not even because the peripheral storylines are de facto a bad thing, but because they cant seem to come up with enough enjoyable ones to spread around so we get another 'hooked on v' character arc
― σ( ~̀..́~)σ -*TOT MOM*- (Lamp), Thursday, 7 July 2011 16:49 (fourteen years ago)
it's more fun to have the characters bounce off each other in different combinations -- too often they give each person/couple their own storyline and don't tie it all together, which is what made season 2 work well for me, it all related to the main maenad story
― some dude, Thursday, 7 July 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)
last season definitely felt disjointed - I'm feeling better this go around, and its wonderfully cheesy in an enjoyable way again

i'm not as sure about tara, her as cagefighting dyke was great but she just seemed a drag again back in bontemps. even if she isn't mega annoying anymore her tagging along going "oh hell naw" at everything isnt really gonna cut it either
it's hard to figure out what to do with her though (no spoilers!), like lafayette already bagged the willow role so is tara just forever defined by her opposition? how do you test her?

Question - has anyone read the books? A co-worker has been lending them to me for some fun summer trash reading. I know they're different to the show in some ways and am wondering if I can start watching from the beginning now or if I should finish the books first.

― T.S. Eliot-themed roach fetish porn (silby), Tuesday, 12 July 2011 13:24 (fourteen years ago)
ouch. that's not a good sign. btw ENBB the books are addicting but fluffy and kind of dumb. kinda like the show, but minus the drugs, and also minus the not-so-subtle undertones of anti-vampire = anti-queer/black/whatever. i read a few of them but stopped because I AM A MAN DAMMIT. they're pretty girly, you really can't get around that fact. also, they're not that great. hard to put down once you've started though, i could see how they could attain bestseller status. you might like them if you think you would like, say, regency romances about vampires set in modern times.
also, they do contain spoilers, so if you (like me) wind up thinking the show is better than the books, you might be pissed you read them

I just watched this entire season to date (save the premiere, which I had already seen) in one day.
Re: the books - I found them reasonably entertaining for the first six or so and then I couldn't stand them anymore. Sookie bathes and shaves her legs at least four times every book and Charlane Harris cannot introduce a non-American character without putting him or her in "ethnic" dress. It's infuriating. Also I accidentally skipped a book and didn't even notice it.

its ok. im getting close to being one of those people who fast-forwards through certain storylines (tara, sookie, eric astonishingly) but so far ive resisted the temptation. all the stupid things characters do to stretch shit out is starting to grate on me - how can a show be so padded with only 10 eps per season. cant wait for russell edgington to come back and fuck everyone up
i like the way that guy says brujo

― http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i_qxQztHRI (Princess TamTam), Sunday, 14 August 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, that's one benefit of watching a whole bunch of shows back to back. The slowness/padding is less noticeable. It probably also helped that I was doing laundry/lesson planning. Also there were people here drywalling/painting a room in our apartment (roof leaked) and I had to keep muting the TV every time there was loud sex, which is really kind of all the time. Then when the workers would come out I'd be like "Please don't look at the nipples/butts on the TV... please don't look at the nipples/butts on the TV" and they always would.
My favorite part of the whole season so far is when Terry told Creepy Baby Mikey "I'm your daddy, and I ain't rotten - and neither are you." <3

i already am although tara is my fave character and i like her ~attitude~ tbh i found her chasing off her mma lesbo gf one of the most affecting moments of the season (soooo much better than the candy-sweet romance porn that most of the sookie/eric dialogue consists of)

tara was great in s1 but they ruined her character (and lafayette's) by constantly terrorizing her. at the beginning of the season i thought they were gonna start over with her, but yet again they've turned a once-confident character into a trembling victim. they dont know that to do with any of their fucking characters, which is how we got insipid puppydog-eyes Eric

i've been rewatching s1 and they've really fucked up the whimsical, corny, dreamy sequences lately - that scene with eric and sookie in the snowy bed was just so painfully terrible to watch, so tacky and badly done and LAME, not humourously campy at all. but the V-dream sequences with jason and his gf in s1 are so so so much better - the music, the acting, the setting, everything.

that said, i thought this was one of the better episodes this season. the woman playing marnie is gangster as hell, and the character comedy was good. the climax highlighted a big problem with the show, which is how artificial the tension is. bill & co have had dozens of legit chances to kill marnie and each time they're thwarted by the show's need to drag out the conflict. maybe this would bother me less if i was marathoning it, like i did the first 3 seasons.

i'm actually kind of enjoying it by just accepting it as a pretty ridiculous vampires & fairys soap opera of dubious quality with occasionally really interesting bits and lots of gratuitous nudity and sex. when it starts getting sucky i just roll my eyes then keep watching it anyway.
― messiahwannabe, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)
not entirely surprised were down to 4 comments on here 8 eps into the season though, it's fairly dire at times. that said i wonder if it wont retain a dark shadowsesque ironic-but-loyal fan following as it moves forward
― messiahwannabe, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, it's hard to really find anything to talk about anymore because the plots are either SO WEIRD or SO OBVIOUS.. I'm not convinced this Warlow fellow is a new character though, probably someone we know already.. anyway, I am along for the ride and enjoying every ridiculous minute, smoke monster to wolf sex to double Sams and all.

so apparently about 88% of the audience were in it to see lilith blood orgys and alexander skarsgård necking with his sister, not well written drama and believable characters. who'd have thought?
― messiahwannabe, Wednesday, 1 August 2012 03:34 (thirteen years ago)
lol'd at them going w/ Elliott Smith and not Gotye; saw it coming, but nicely played all the same.
― Simon H., Wednesday, 1 August 2012 06:51 (thirteen years ago)
Ep 5 and ep 8 way better than the rest of the season so far IMO. I like where the efrit plot finally went; hoyt as murderous redneck was pointless, pls kill him soon.

this, fuck outta here with "well written drama and believable characters" being your primary expectation from this show of all shows
― contender's game (some dude), Sunday, 5 August 2012 02:00 (thirteen years ago)
I'm kind of losing interest.:-( Not sure why though. Maybe cause it get's to be the fucking same all the time?
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Sunday, 5 August 2012 15:18 (thirteen years ago)
ha, when did i say that was my primary expectation from the show? what i actually said only a few lines back was
i mean i still like the show. its just it was a lot tighter and less silly season 1, perhaps we can agree on this? i mean all the stuff i still like (kinky vampire sex, gratuitous nudity and gayness, "ooh bite me harder!" etc) was there to begin with, and all the southern gothic horniness of it was probably what really drew me to the show in the first place, truth be told. but otoh, for a while there the characters were actually believable, and the drama well written, no? it was never my *primary* expectation for the show, but the show was better when the quality bar was higher.
it's cool, i still dig the blood orgies and what not, and apparently approximately 4 million six hundred thousand people agree :) which bodes well for the show continuing to camp it up for the foreseeable future
― messiahwannabe, Monday, 6 August 2012 07:18 (thirteen years ago)
Now the vampire sex seems just stuffed into it like it HAS to be there otherwise we will stop looking. True probably but wtf was up with Eric fucking his sister? That was yuck. Ah well, as with the book, the climax was the fourth season for me. (Eric and SOOKEH.) All this supe (?) stuff is getting out of hand. I mean, as if we wouldn't notice? Like suddenly the normal humans seem in the minority.
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 6 August 2012 08:28 (thirteen years ago)
you realize that wasn't his biological sister, right? fucking someone who was made into a vampire by the same person is more like, i dunno, fucking your college roommate.
― Diary of a Whiney Kid: Dog Days (some dude), Monday, 6 August 2012 10:59 (thirteen years ago)
Oh god, yeah, only realized after the last ep aired. I didn't realize before. lol
― Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 6 August 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)
I was 3eps behind, and tried to catch up this weekend -- got halfway through the first backlogged ep and resented the hell out of even having to watch the nonsense. So I cancelled it off my DVR. It's just too much of a chore.
Maybe I'll circle back when it's done but all the extraneous supernatural creatures and bajillion stupid storylines is just getting interminable
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 6 August 2012 16:11 (thirteen years ago)
I felt that way for a couple of episodes, but then it suddenly went and got good and rompy again. All the Authority chitchat turned into some proper blood lust, Eric and Vampire Mac have joined forces, Pam and Tara are turning into an amusing double act, Jason's stopped whining and started being good police, Lafayette started swearing at people again, it's really picked up.
― trishyb, Tuesday, 7 August 2012 12:01 (thirteen years ago)
I'm in the beginning of season 4 and something has coalesced for me and that is how aggravated I am that all of the sex is purely penetrative--they can show T&A but never anyone touching either, no (even off-screen, implied) fingering, really nothing that would indicate anyone is getting a woman off except penetration. But they can be incredibly explicit about PiV, barely short of hardcore porn, so obvs the lines have been drawn: male pleasure is fine but female pleasure is taboo. I guess I already knew that but reading essays about it is different than watching many many scenes from a show and realizing half of the characters' experiences have been erased from show's reality.

There is still no escaping that was even more terrible than usual, so something has changed.
― Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 23:25 (twelve years ago)
wow this wet splat of a show really should have been put out of its misery three seasons ago.

I just started on the beginning recently due to HBO on am amazon prime. Don't be killjoys!
Is there a season I should definitely quit after?

Jason Stackhouse still delivering at the beginning of the third season.

it's all downhill after like episode 8 of the first season but you could hang on through season 3 without actively hating yourself
― resulting post (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 04:42 (eleven years ago)
imo season 2 was the best but i always thought its decline was gradual (and inevitable) enough that i never really minded it, even at its best the show is super dumb lizard brain entertainment and it still delivers moderately well at that.

I realize only three people in the universe will care but... Sheriff Dearborne was played by the same actor that played Larry on Newhart, which totally blew my mind.
