Well, why not? It’s been awhile.
I’d like to do things slightly differently from the last few polls. First of all, I’d like to use this thread and the month of August strictly for nominations, plugs, complaints, and a discussion of the rules. Then in September I’ll open up voting. Why? Well, I’m in the process of acquiring a laptop which I’ll use to tally up the votes. I should have it by then at the very latest. However, if something happens and I don’t, I’m more than willing to pass the ballots to another ILXOR.
RULES & SUCH:
I haven’t finalized anything yet. For voting, I’m leaning towards a ballot of 30-35 slots (#1=most points, #2=1 point less etc.), just like in the 90s, 80s, & 60s polls. If anybody has an opinion regarding the ballot or the points system, post it and I will consider it. I’d like to set the due date in October. I think that would give people enough time to watch/catch up with/re-screen films and come up with their ballots.
NOMINATIONS:
You can nominate as many films as you like, as long as they were initially released in the years 1950 through 1959. As in previous polls, the IMDB will be the source for release dates. I’ll try to post an updated list of noms here every week or so. Instead of starting off w/a bunch of obvious stuff, I’ll begin with this batch of pictures that for whatever reason I feel would otherwise fall between the cracks:
A Double Tour Berlin-Schonhauser Corner The Big Combo Crazed Fruit The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz Europa ‘51 The Girl Can’t Help It I Vitelloni It Should Happen To You King Creole Lady Without Camellias The Lavender Hill Mob Le Amiche/The Girlfriends Lili Lola Montes The Magician Some Came Running Story of A Love Affair Summer With Monika The Trouble With Harry Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?
And I’d like to add
Bob le flambeur Nights of Cabiria
...because I can.
And before I forget:
Suddenly Last Summer
…which accidentally got a vote in the 60s poll, despite being from 1959.
Have at it then.

Here's a few more noms, all great films:
The Court Jester Dial M for Murder Gion Festival Music (Gion bayashi) Harvey How to Marry a Millionaire A King in New York Monkey Business Night and Fog La Strada Street of Shame (Akasen chitai)
― Tuomas, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:12 (seventeen years ago)
On the Waterfront Lady and the Tramp Ten Commandments Streetcar Named Desire Shane East of Eden The King and I Carousel
All I can think of off-hand that haven't been nominated yet.
― Mordy, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)
Duck Amuck (Chuck Jones, USA) Bully for Bugs (Chuck Jones, USA)
I think this poll is for feature films only, or is it?
― Tuomas, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)
I'm kinda surprised Waterfront hadn't been nominated yet, actually. We're all in agreement that it's one of the greatest flicks of all time, right?
Absolutely not.

― Mordy, Monday, 4 August 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)
I was mostly expressing surprise that, three years after we decided to do this, it finally is happening.
I'm trying to remember if it's been features-only in the past. Did "La Jetée" make the 60s list?
― Eric H., Monday, 4 August 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)
The African Queen (John Huston, 1951) Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder, 1951) The Tragedy of Othello (Orson Welles, 1952) The Crimson Pirate (Robert Siodmak, 1952) Mandy (Alexander Mackendrick, 1952) Scrooge (Brian Hurst, 1951) The Dam Busters (Michael Anderson , 1955) 1984 (Michael Anderson, 1956) Bad Day at Black Rock (John Sturges, 1955) The Ladykillers (Alexander Mackendrick, 1955) The Incredible Shrinking Man (Jack Arnold, 1957) Expresso Bongo (Val Guest, 1959)...well, at least the first half I'm All Right Jack (John Boulting, 1959) The Mouse That Roared (Jack Arnold, 1959)
― Billy Dods, Monday, 4 August 2008 21:20 (seventeen years ago)
hadn't been nominated yet, actually. We're all in agreement that (Waterfront is) one of the greatest flicks of all time, right?
Mostly for acting and its influence; to make it truly great you'd have to cut back some on the Christ imagery and kill Brando at the end (as opposed as those two tasks seem to be).
How about almost everything done in this decade by Ozu, Hitchcock, Fuller, Lang, and Rossellini (add The Flowers of St Francis)? and Sirk (esp The Tarnished Angels).
I prefer Gigi & The Band Wagon to the other MGM musicals listed. also The 5000 Fingers of Dr T
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)
I definitely meant because of the acting -- Brando is incredible. That scene where he's sitting in the restaurant/bar with the girl is one of the most amazing acting jobs I've ever seen ever.
― Mordy, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 15:35 (seventeen years ago)
I like the walk in the park better: "You turned out very nice."
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 15:39 (seventeen years ago)
I've tried to like The Tarnished Angels; it's a handsome-looking film, and reminds me of Kurosawa's take on film noir. But, oy, that Rock Hudson drunk scene.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)
any sillier than the silliest scene in any other Sirk film?
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

TV scene in All That Heaven Allows = more heartbreaking than the "I coulda been a contender" speech in On the Waterfront boy howdy
― Eric H., Tuesday, 5 August 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)
The results of this one should be fun
well, I love the TV scene, and "contenda" is the most over-cited OtW scene.

also, at least a few Martin & Lewis:

and Big Deal on Madonna Street

Jerry Lewis not particularly of interest to me in the 1950s, unfortunately, although I do admit I haven't seen Artists and Models yet.

Yeah, xxxxp the On the Waterfront "contender speech" is nowhere near the greatest scene in that flick.
― Mordy, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)
I certainly would drop some from the They Shoot Pictures list ... like Ben Hur, The African Queen and River Kwai. Visconti and Ray, though...
― Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 16:42 (seventeen years ago)
Yes, I'd move that all the movies on that TSPDT list be added to the roster of nominees, even if I'll probably end up eating those words if Ben-Hur shows up in the top 100.

― Eric H., Wednesday, 6 August 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)
Should the Abbot and Costello stuff get nominated? (Foreign Legion, Meet the Mummy, Go to Mars, Meet the Invisible Man...)
Also, a few more films I might want to vote for (including some MGM Musicals): Marjorie Morningstar The Last Angry Man Annie Get Your Gun Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Damn Yankees Oklahoma! South Pacific
And I'm predicting right now that Sunset Blvd places in the top 3.
― Mordy, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)

Mordy, presumably end of the month.
Vincente Minnelli is a contender for Hollywood Filmmaker of the Decade (arguably a more consistent and varied oeuvre than Hitchcock):
Some Came Running (1958) The Reluctant Debutante (1958) Gigi (1958) Designing Woman (1957) Tea and Sympathy (1956) Lust for Life (1956) Kismet (1955) The Cobweb (1955) Brigadoon (1954) The Long, Long Trailer (1953) The Band Wagon (1953) The Story of Three Loves (1953) (segment "Mademoiselle") The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) An American in Paris (1951) Father's Little Dividend (1951) Father of the Bride (1950)

Vincente Minnelli is a contender for Hollywood Filmmaker of the Decade
Yeah most of those are good to great (although I've never gotten the love for Gigi). But I saw Kismet recently and whoa boy what a fucking nightmare! His camera just floats above the proceedings as if he's trying to figure out what to do with it all. What the hell happened? (And Howard Keel was one of many reasons why rock & roll had to happen.)
― Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 7 August 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

BTW Morbs, are you nominating all those Minelli films? I ask because I went ahead & added the rest of Fuller, Ozu etc. to the list (which I'll post tomorrow)like you suggested yesterday.
― C. Grisso/McCain, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)
no, I am not nominating all of them. I would personally consider Gigi, The Band Wagon, The Bad and the Beautiful and Father of the Bride, but I haven't even seen many of the others.

I'll nominate Black Orpheus, although I dislike the second half of it and might not even vote for it.
― abanana, Monday, 25 August 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)
I appreciate the sentiment behind including Looney Tunes shorts in this, but I think it's a mistake, like including TV episodes or something. It's such an apples & oranges thing, can anyone here honestly say they've got an aesthetic scale of values where it's easy to compare the relative merits of "Bully For Bugs" and "Throne Of Blood"?
(Ok yeah, one could argue that anything as vague as "50's movies" is gonna be plenty of apples & oranges anyway, but even when you're comparing stuff as disparate as, say, "Wild Strawberries" and "Forbbiden Planet", there's still this vague connection - at the very least you can narrow it down to the "which one I'd like to watch more right now" factor. Which I don't think works when it's shorts vs movies - short's only gonna be 10 minutes, why not you know?)
― Daniel_Rf, Monday, 25 August 2008 16:17 (seventeen years ago)
The thing is, those cartoons were done for theatres and ran with films. I see your point though, since most of us grew up seeing them on tv, which is were they earned a shelf-life. And furthermore I don't think they get revived in rep as much as proper feature-length films. I think that by including them, it'll make things more interesting poll-wise.
― C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 25 August 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)
Several of my all-time favorite films are under 30 mins. So yeah I have no problem with including cartoons and shorts and whatnot. And I have no problem stating that Duck Amuck is an infinitely superior film to Throne of Blood or damn near any other film ever made. Plus the no-shorts rule (!) leaves out cans and cans of avant-garde film.
― Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 25 August 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)
See Kevin, what I wanted to avoid was making this seem like I'm dissing on the Looney Tunes - I'm not! I'm on my 2nd Looney Tunes box set! It's not that "Duck Amuck" is somehow inferior to "Throne Of Blood", it's that they're in diferent mediums - sort've like deciding whether "The Great Gatsby" is better than "An Irishman Foresees His Death" or something. Your point about the avante garde stuff is a valid one, but I dunno, I just get this weird disconnect from comparing a 10 minute short to an 80 minute movie; they're just different aesthetic experiences for me, I guess.
C. Grisso, to be perfectly honest I've seen plenty more 50's movies on TV than in the cinema, as well, so it's not just that. I agree it'll be interesting to see how they chart, but I can't help feeling that sticking them in there isn't really fair to them or the other movies.
― Daniel_Rf, Monday, 25 August 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)
I know you weren't dissing them. But still, I think the comparisons are valid. Same thing with music. I think the ability to record a great single is more praiseworthy in general than the ability to record a great album. So I have no problem holding "Bon Bon Vie" up against, I don't know, Another Green World.
I'll vote for Duck Amuck to get the balance right.

Some more noms from me:
An American In Paris Il Grido On The Beach
And on Eric's suggestion, I'll include the remaining unnominated qualifing titles from the they shoot... list. They are:
Rio Grande Miracle in Milan African Queen, The Miss Oyu Quiet Man, The Life of Oharu, The El/This Strange Passion Limelight Golden Coach, The Bienvenido Mister Marshall Anatahan The Barefoot Contessa Les Maîtres fous Princess Yang Kwei Fei Il Bidone, Shin heike monogatari And God Created Woman The Bridge on the River Kwai Pyaasa Funny Face The Wings of Eagles Mother India Ashes and Diamonds The Music Room Man of the West Nazarín The Naked and the Dead The Tingler Kaagaz Ke Phool The Sign of Leo
I still have tentative plans to open voting on the 2nd, but that may change depending on Hurricane Gustav. If it heads my way I'll more than likely be offline for a few days. Either way, you can still nominate any remaining films until voting opens.
