So i think Ally shoots straight and amuses me.

anthony, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nicole is utterly wonderful and constantly underrates herself. I don't do enough for her as a friend. :-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Josh and DG are great moderators.

John Davey, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick Dastoor has an amazing memory -- he's the best archivist around.

Nicole, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think the pinefox is hilarious, and i loved what he said about yo la tengo on the 'is 'pretty' bad?' thread.

someone remind me who is closest to my first name and i'll say something about them too.

ethan, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anthony is extremely open.

Ally, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan: how about Emma?

John Davey, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

crap, i don't know that much about emma. i vaguely recall her saying something i agreed with a few days ago. emma, help me praise you!

ethan, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's someone else here named Sean, but I don't know much about him, I'm sure he's a lovely guy. BUT, Kate seemed like my hero for a while, hard-drinking, hard rocking, straight-talking, skinny-boy- loving... now I hear she's through with drinking. Maybe she'll cheer up soon.

Sean, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Love Anthony's sincerity and poetic descriptions and requests for discussion...

Arthur, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did I ever tell you about how I disapprove of the alphabet, with its ridiculous idea that letters came in sets of *26* and were best considered in an "order"?
[spits]
[looks up: the thread has emptied, magically]

mark s, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe we should design a special ILE alphabet order, the AZERTY to the QWERTY of ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ?

John Davey, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Both nick Dastoor and paul stranGe fruit are very skinny.

DG, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hey, you're like that asshole from neverending story that made the books disappear! asshole!

ethan, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Geoff's email address is cool.

Graham, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan (& Ethan) make comic books coolio.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I though Bill's comments on the We'll always have Paris thread were erudite and apposite.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Masonic boom plays good guitar on boycrush song

Mike Hanley, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stevie T is very wise indeed. And he likes Throwing Muses.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mike Hanle[]y has figs for ears; they are sweet with a tangy crunch!

Tom E are you closest on the first name? If so: beatmatching: good on yer. + beards r cool (as r moustaches).

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i don't know duane but he lives in my town and i have some cds which he drums on that i like. i am not good at complimenting people i don't know. it feels alien to my nature. so what i'll do instead is compliment myself since i am closest in the alphabet to me! not to mention the fact that i really, sincerely think i rule. di is a sexy beast with the coolest shoes in the world! (thats enough di or you'll get a headswell!)

lady die, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually my ears are mangos. I know its hard to visualise, but...try.

Mike Hanley, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Willett likes libraries and Scott Walker. She's no chucklehead.

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Richard can DJ even when someone switches off the power to the DJ console.

Paul Strange, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan, if I have to help you praise me it doesn't count.

Emma, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kim and Kerry are very Kind, Konsiderate and Killingly funny.

Kate the Saint, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete is a very social type and a thoughtful movie buff.

Patrick, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dave Raposa may be a long-lost brother of mine because 95% of the time I've strongly agreed with whatever he's had to say.

Dave Merryweather is a paragon of wit and class. Three cheers to him!

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Suzy has evidently stepped into our world from the frames of a Whit Stillman film.

stevie t, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Suzy, what stevie t. isn't telling you is that he hates Whit Stillman films.

I heart Nicole. I bet, like me, she'd be a Dependent Good Love Provider on thespark.com's Match test. She has, however, so frequently been called underrated that she is in danger of being overrated. That's an O-level cliche, by the way.

I could say something nice about Nick Currie, but it seems inappropriate in so many ways.

Nick, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Geoff, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick D's last post was BRILLIANT!!

the pinefox, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dastoor, I am going to give you such a SPANKING when I next see you. I like "Last Days of Disco", very much.

stevie t, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, but you said you find the other two unwatchable. Are you saying suzie reminds you of Kate Beckinsale, then? BE MORE SPECIFIC.

Nick, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I should have realised I was messing with DASTOOR THE MEMORIOUS. Nick: one can appreciate the universe of an author without appreciating individual texts; for example, I love the "world" of PG Wodehouse, yet there are many Wodehouse novels I do not like at all. Similarly, Woody Allen. And again: Whit Stillman. SATISFIED?!?!

stevie t, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Pinefox is always supportative of other peoples sometimes ill advised posts.

Pete, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

COR!!

NICKY D AND STEVIE T ARE USING LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERS!!! THEY'RE GONNA HAVE A FITE!!!

'Memorious'? I didn't know we were dealing with Troussé The Neologistic.

Unlike Stevie T, I DO like another Stillman film besides ...Disco, namely Metropolitan, which I remember as quite marvellous. I was only 16 when it came out, mind.

Why is everyone going on about Suzy? What's she like?

Hey - is she like a character from [the frames of] a Whit Stillman film?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Re: "memorious" - I may be mis-remembering from the Borges story 'Funes the Memorious' - about the guy who fell off a horse and ever after was unable to forget a single thing. A parable of the Nietzchean Will to Stupidity? Ahem!

stevie t, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Voila!: http://www.bridgewater.edu/~atrupe/GEC101/Funes.html

stevie t, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I read that in Spanish! However I am not Emma the Memorious as I have forgotten Spanish now. Ethan has still not said anything nice about me. It is lucky I have such good self esteem.

Emma, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma has nice m's

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I knew I shouldn't have worn such a low cut top.

Emma, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hello! Just teleporting in from WhitLand, where we all have black clothes, brittle dialogue, and private incomes we don't discuss. Well, I have two of these things but must reiterate the following: Champagne lifestyle, beer budget. It's not going to do wonders for my rep by telling y'all that I'm in regular correspondence with Mr. Stillman, as he is writing a SS for the next anthology I'm doing. Nice guy, VERY preppy. Had a meeting with him in Soho and the C4 bods who collected him for the next one asked if I was his girlfriend, which made me squirm.

Stevie T = sharp dresser (if you can make beige work, hats off), acute writer. Was fun at the picnic.

suzy, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Beige work? Is that like shift work?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Occasionally, beige 'works'. Unless you are doing shift work. Then you are beige, with a name tag.

suzy, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

[what can I have said to marianne and maryann?]

er, Mike Hanle y is my hot bitch

mark s, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

marks is the Yoda of the Twin Beeotch

Mike Hanle y is a sill y-bill y

Michael Bourke, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wait, *Paul* is the person nearest to me alphabetically ! All right, I take back what I said about Pete being thoughtful and all that ! Paul makes Masonic Saint Kate happy and I'd love to go to his club.

Patrick, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's somebody called Tom on these boards who Ned knows. He seems nice now I've got over my horror at him being called Tom.

Tracer Hand is the kind of New Yorker I would want to meet if I was going to New York. Going the other way, Tarden's changed his name it seems so tho I like Tarden I can pass the being-nice buck onto Dave R, but Tadeusz hasn't, and he would appear to rule: at one point I was going to set up a fake online identity called Tomasz, so I like the S/Z thing (I'm sure I'd like S/Z too if I read it)

Tom, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Suzy: I interviewed Whit a few years back and he actually sort of disturbed me. Most of the interview consisted of him asking me questions about whether Chicago's theater locations and public transportation system made it convenient for people in my area to go see the film. I put it down to just being very concerned for the film, but it was still very twitchy and obsessive and non- sensical: he was already giving the interview, so would it really matter even if there was no theater within 500 miles of its publication?

I only mention this because I've spent the last three years trying to figure out exactly why he was so concerned about it . . .

Nitsuh, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nobody said anything nice about me. i think the pinefox has a special filter that automatically deletes anything by people who have started threads about epmd.

ethan, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well who is next to you in the alphabet ethan get on him.

anthony, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh ok mark s is obviously smart and a good writer. and just to be more original um he knows brevitas delectat! I hope i spelled that write. but this doesn't seem right to me, cos don't you know specific individual numbered qualities don't count for nothing, contra Louise Hay. Fuck self esteem though I never read that thread. So ok mark s, you're a good manifestation of being.

maryann, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ethan? i'm near him alphabetically & he recently pointed out a joke i made as being funny. so thanks.

duane, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also, good on you for starting threads about EPMD.

duane, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

maryann doesn't waste her entire life posting on ile because she is kewl and gorgeous and RL demands her constant presence

ditto marianne (he added rather ungallantly!!)

mark s, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan, I am waiting for you to say something nice before I say anything as I believe men should always make the first move.

Just say I have nice eyes or something, that'll do.

Emma, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think 'emma' is a lovely name, and emma regularly lives up to it by being lovely and funny and insightful herself (see, now i've been paying attention for the past few days and i have something to go on). she is blunt when there is need to be blunt and fanciful when there is need to be fanciful and there's rarely a misjudgement in between. cheers to you, emma.

ethan, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim Finney doesn't post nearly enough on ILM / E. It's a shame because he always has something interesting to say.

Tim, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan is a lovely man and I will buy him a pint if he is ever in my neck of the woods. He is clearly an excellent judge of character too.

Emma, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No one's said anything nice about me either, but I don't mind. No, not a bit.

Sean, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mariannamaclean need never harm her fragile beauty with chemicals

[phew]

mark s, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan you are a scummy lowlife crawler.

But if you had been writing about me I would totally have fell for it too. Would someone else near me in the alphabet write something similar? I resent only being skinny and having an aptitude for archival work.

Nick, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Think I read somewhere here that 'AP' is another Andrew. I hope so, 'cos I love his posts - he's such a raunchy rocker.

Andrew L, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom, your kindness befuddles me, since I'm not sure what you're getting at. But you mentioned my name, and I'm a slut for attention, so thanks much.

Are there any other Ds in the house I can give random props to? Let yourself be heard! (I must look like a dork.)

David Raposa, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

art school suzy seems amiable and interesting. stevie t sticks up for his friends. kate st-claire does a good job of describing the grateful dead.

sundar subramanian, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sundar's name means BEAUTIFUL in Hindu, I *think*. Please correct me if I am wrong!

suzy, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hindu isn't a language.

Kris, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kodanshi is crazy with the html.

Kris, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kris, I know Hindu isn't a language. Durrrr, it's Hindi. Typo!

suzy, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey now, I've been summoned! ILE & inhabitants entertaining as midnight baking!! Andrew L = v. good w/ measured, thoortful, somehow "Brit" turn-of-phrase I've admired plenny since arrival in thesehereparts.

AP, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sundar = brilliant analyist of Sonic Youth. Suzy = making a living doing somehting she loves.

Sterling Clover, Saturday, 28 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

five months pass...
This needs reviving for the new recruits I feel.

Graham, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You're all talk.

N., Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark S is extremely popular. Mark H always smiles, and Marcello is wise beyond my wildest dreams.

Mark C, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Marcello is closest in surname too, but I may be wrong. Honourable mention goes to Starbar, who didn't like me at first but now does. I think.

Mark C, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gage is an assmang-oh!

helenfordsdale, Friday, 28 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I defy your alphabetic hegemony.

james, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

duckling and miss darcy are both frightening.

di, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

darcy n' di n' duane 'n dunedin dwelling 'n de darkside

ducklingmonster, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I defy your alphabetic hegemony.
Okay okay, James, I wuv you. You seem the guy I want to have a drink with. Talk shit about Bros and New Kids On The Block. Then we go out on the dancefloor and do the busstop.

helenfordsdale, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah thank you Helen! You are obviously a cool, kind and clever person! :) I would enjoy talking about Bros and NKOTB! Did you know, that I actually saw East 17 standing on the street in Bruges town centre some years ago!

james, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

emily with the period in her name doesn't post often enough for me to know, so i'm quite sorry, emily with the period in your name.

emma is funny and entertaining even though she is wrong about nail varnish. she has good stories.

Maria, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sniff, sniff...

jess, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if i was as smart and lucid as maria when i was her age, today i'd surely be as fab as mess...

what? yes, i *know* he's called jess: it's poetic licence. Get with the programme or the terrorists have won.

(maria, when you were called "lyra" was that anything to do with philip pullman?)

mark s, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, i was finishing the end of that trilogy.

maria, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Where is the cockfarming Pullman thread I started lo these months gone by? I've looked and looked but it is not to be found.

Tom, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ask and ye shall receive.

jess, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, wait, i started that one. the mystery goes unsolved. unless tom is going insane of course.

jess, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Geoff, I think you are a very nice person and are a well appreciated friend! Happy New Year to you!

Gale Deslongchamps, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ricky T rocks and has great taste in music (i.e. mine without the crap and a thousand times broader, deeper and generally more discerning but eclectic). He obviously also has great taste in newsgroups, since there was a time when he seemed to post to almost every group I subscribed to. It's a shame about his taste in MSc subjects, heh heh heh, but the fact that he could understand any of it points to an intelligence so far beyond my own that it's extremely embarrassing.

By surname? The Macleans make heartbreakingly lovely records of which I don't own nearly enough, and Andrew L's posts are always interesting and thoughtful: he should post more.

Rebecca, Tuesday, 1 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark S next but one to me first name-wise; Carmody next to me surname- wise. Which I think sums it up nicely.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim H always manages to sound urbane and never in a bad way, which is an accomplished feat. + packs lots of potential for chin-stroking contemplation on part of reader in very small amount of words. + inadvertantly got me onto Skitz. + has most eagerly anticipated never-updated blog ever. + finally updated it, hooray.

Tom E was the first person to publish anything by me, an act of great charity that no doubt awarded him much karma in the form of an illustrious beard, even if they are no longer seeing eachother. His excellent articles always make me feel like giving up writing though.

Tim, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cybele shares her name with one of my favourite favourite Stereolab songs, and Dan Perry cracks me up,and I dig his blog regularly.

Damian, Thursday, 3 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ArfArf has a lot to say on the Canon thread on ILM. I have nothing to add, I just keep hearing that awful Counting Crows song in my head. Come on, join me--"and it's one more day up in the canon, and it's one more night in Hollywood".

Arthur, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To all tha letter-B muthafuckaz in the ILE haus... you all get my love.

Hello? Anyone?

Brian MacDonald, Saturday, 5 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gale - what a wonderfully touching and unexpected compliment.

I think you have a warm heart, a wealth of experience and a genuine, understanding and generous nature.

geoff, Sunday, 6 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's lonely down here.

Vinnie, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aha! Will is cool because he saw Lord of the Rings two days ago.

Vinnie, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Garrett, YOU still have the most wonderful hair here... :( (sniff) Happy New year! :)

Gale Deslongchamps, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer Hand rules, because he has a consummate grasp of how to correctly pronounce the word "lawyer".

Trevor, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeff @ peopletalktooloud knows way more than me about everything

Jeff W, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure if she's closest but she is close: Sarah. Lately I've realized I always enjoy her posts and look forward to them. Her sense of humor is at times innocent and haphazard but always makes me SMILE. The caps are ESSENTIAL.

:)
