Any reason for making the thread title unsearchable?

Okay, another attempt at explaining why I couldn't be comfortable with an open relationship. You know how, at the beginning of something great, you get that feeling of near perfect emotional and physical happiness, you're always smiling and thinking of the other person, you can't wait to see them, etc. etc? And you know how, when you've been in a relationship for a couple of years, you have a wonderful, close bond but the excitement factor, and probably the sex factor, have been toned down a lot?

Then, you go out, meet someone for a one-nighter, and suddenly - omg, there's that feeling from before, the fantastic squeeee omg feeling! How come you don't feel this for your partner any more? So suddenly you can't get this new person out of your mind, you think about them all the time, and then you go home to your partner, who seems dull, unsexy, asks you to take out the trash or is pissed off at you for not going to visit their parents the next day. And you begin to wonder - how can *this* be better than what I'm feeling for the new person? Maybe the new person will take me away from all this!

Perhaps I have never been 100% happy in a relationship, I don't know, but sex opens the door to emotion and closeness and compared to your old, reliable, predictable relationship, the new person has a big fat advantage which isn't even necessarily real but dammit it feels like it is.

Make any sense? I suspect this is the kind of concept I could only explain verbally but hell.

Yeah, so at that point you suspect you're being duped, and you don't trust it. Or do you always fall for the simple, common dupes that you know well enough to point out?

Also, that scenario hasn't really happened to me. Although I've met people who, in retrospect, I would have felt a bit squee about if I hadn't been in a relationship at the time.

And if you'd had a chance to fuck them, be close to them, gaze into their eyes while you're inside them, hold hands while walking through piles of leaf litter etc.?

Thing is though - how do you know it's a dupe? What if the new person IS an improvement on your lover?

Sure, 90% of the time your new sexual adventure won't have this effect - it's just when it does I can't see it being anything other than hugely destabilising.

(NB I've never had an open relationship so it's all theory. I have had long term relationships during which I have been extremely attracted to other people, and in these cases I am relieved I wasn't able to sleep with them because all kinds of shit would have been fucked up. Also we're presupposing that the long-term partner has a 100% cool and non-judgemental perfect attitude to the open relationship too, and that you yourself have the same attitude to their extra-curricular activities. I bet that's a hard balance to find, though props to Sur is he's managed it)

a signature is a bunch of sheets laid into each other to form a section: if you look down at the top of the spine of most books you'll see the text block is made up of a bunch of sections/signatures, not just individual sheets stuck together. paper wraps is just a fancy way of saying 'paper cover'. me and the bf are publishing a poetry anthology in chapbook-form and i'm learning how to hand-bind so i can make them all myself.

By the way, I'm typing this on my beautiful LAPTOP which I now own. The keyboard feels so lovely. I am living with two Ph.D. students, we are all in our rooms. So, despite finishing in the top of my class last year, my "studio" this year consists of a tiny bit of wall, that doesn't even have enough room to put a table against. This was explained to me, oddly, at a meeting I didn't bother going to, as due to the fact that I work "in video". In case you were wondering why I was being so sarcastic about "video", its because, no, I don't work in video. Considering you fuckers marked me last year, I would have thought you would have noticed that I don't work in video. And the two supplementary videos I did make, I made pretty much all of, IN MY STUDIO. This is basically all I care about today. Except that I got my number one choice tutor for my thesis, even though he's taken barely any students.

That is idiotic. Can you make a stink? This is your last year, right?

The average size is about five to six times bigger, mine would be tiny by second year standards (they're supposed to get incrementally bigger, and yeah, this is my final year). I don't want to keep banging on about it this way, but most of the people who basically get a room to themselves are way below me in terms of class placement! That seems pretty fucking unfair to me, when I stretch out my arms, they spread about 20cm wider than the wall I got given. What is it even based on you know? The only way I would get a better space is if they kicked someone out of the space they were previously assigned. I'm disappointed because the big reward of fourth year is the massive studio, it feels like such a letdown.

The space I'm in used to be known as the really shit worst space, but they've halved it, and given me the much smaller half. It's even in a crap place.

i think you should create a big fuss -- it's your right, and you owe it to yourself, to at least give someone a big piece of your mind. it's not a trivial issue.

This story is from a friend of mine and it made me laugh out loud.

Oh man, I overheard a craaaaazy conversation on the train this morning, between a handsome young African American flaming gay and an extremely ugly African American woman of indeterminate age. They were coworkers, nurses of some sort (they had on scrubs and carried stethoscopes, although they were just kind of holding them which I thought was weird).

The woman was on the phone with her son, and the man told her to tell her son he said hello. The son said something back that the woman refused to repeat. The man kept insisting that she say what it was, and he started speaking in a very loud voice:

Did he say something about me being a homosexual? It's okay. I don't mind. You can tell me. What did he say? At least he spoke. That is the important thing. He spoke.

Then the man, who was reading a Red Eye (free daily shitty paper), announced, "Does anybody want a paper?" and when nobody claimed he, he THREW it to the ground (it landed on the feet of a white businessman across the aisle). The woman said:

Pick that up! That's why people don't like black people! Because they always throw their trash on the El! Pick it up! Pick it up!

And he said:

I did not throw it! I placed it!

He then proceeded to pick up the paper and throw it, to demonstrate throwing, and then place it, to demonstrate placing. He repeated this four or five times, each time announcing what he was doing. The woman kept saying that he was doing a bad job of representing black people (the train car was mostly white).

Okay so THEN they got to talking about homosexuality, referring to the woman's son's homophobia. The man said that some people just can't stand homosexuals. Some people think they are an abomination. The woman said:

Well, I think it is an abomination. It's an evil spirit that gets into you. It's an abomination. If you read Leviticus, it's an abomination.

Then the man said:

I think ugly is an evil spirit that gets into you. And it makes you ugly, so people can see the evil in you.

And the woman said:

No, ugly is genetic. Homosexuality is an abomination. God said it is an abomination unto him.

And the man said:

You're right. I think it's an abomination, too.

The End.

I'm missing what's so funny about that story. I'm assuming the man who said "You're right. I think it's an abomination, too." is the man with the newspaper and not the gay man. If that's correct, then what did the gay man say about these two people (including his co-worker and, perhaps, acquaintance if not friend) call homosexuality an abomination?

More importantly, the article considers how online cruising has changed gay urban social life by, for example, driving human interactions from physical spaces to virtual ones and encouraging the "pornification" of gay self-expression.

Apparently, one UK study found that in 1993, 2.3% of gay men found their first male sex partner online; by 2003 that number had risen to 61.2%. OUT quotes Jeffrey Klausner of the San Francisco Department of Public Health: "It means that gay men who were once socialized in brick-and-mortar establishments, surrounded by other people, are now being socialized online."

You might try eating like an 85-year-old for about three weeks, depending on the severity of the food poisoning.

After I ate some dodgy oysters last Christmas, I spent four days in floor-rolling agony, developed a duodenal ulcer, tore a hole in my esophagus and acid burns on my throat as well as damage to my molars from frequent vomiting.
