rainy, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of Adult. Also the Microphones and Shelleyan Orphan. I'm also spending time with some impulse purchases from last week, including Van Halen's self-titled album, Emperor's Equilibrium IX, and -- based largely on your enthusiasm, Tom! -- Super Trouper.

I'm fairly enthusiastic about Adult. Mostly I want people to hear the record just so I can talk about, because while I'm not completely certain how much I like it (either a decent amount or a whole lot), I do know that it continually interests me.

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My new Young Fresh Fellows vs. Minus 5 album, tons of random MP3s, Shins, Neil Finn and friends live at the St. James (listened to most of it anyway) and on obsessive (rediscovery) repeat is Arias and Symphonies by the Spoons.

yesterday and this morning: neil young "after the gold rush", sleater- kinney "dig me out" and "the hot rock", plus the fall "palace of swords reversed" and some 45s: "SOS" abba, "here comes the night" them, "friday on my mind" the easybeats, "crazy for you" madonna, a snapper live 7" with "hammerhead" and "dry spot" on it. i noticed i need a new stylus very desterately. when i put "take on me" (the original) on, it skipped and put me in a foul mood.

di, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ACTION!

"Overprotected" by Britney Spears is my favouritist single so far this year.

"Put Your Foot On The Fuzzbox Baby" Helen Love.

I've discovered Audiogalaxy as well.

in order of frequency:
1) nothing, it's too much trouble to turn on the cd player instead of just going to sleep
2) mozart's requiem, we're singing it in choir and i'm obsessed because it's so great
3) kinks, village green preservation society, and the nutracker, because they are happy and fun

Maria, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Very little new stuff. Actually no new stuff. Mostly The Cure. And Ice Cube, Steely Dan, Sly and the family Stone, Coltrane and "Best of Acid House Vol. 1".

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah, another response buried again. WHY DOES WORK ACTUALLY HAVE TO BE WORK SOMETIMES?

In order to make work go by more quickly, this has meant endless amounts of Smashing Pumpkins bootlegs, Meat Puppets albums and MST3K songs. I may not be embracing 2002 right now, but that's because the warm comfort of familiarity is conducive for library stuff concentration...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Song of the year so far: "El Sinaloense," the ULTRA-ROCK except not opener to the new Kronos Quartet album. Also: Dave Bartholomew & Fats Domino (for an article), Pelt, Saturday Looks Good To Me, the _No More... No Mourir_ compilation, and trying to figure out if I like the new Flin Flon EP and if so how much. Just tonight I bought Stockholm Monsters and Ludus reissues; have not yet listened.

Other song of the year so far: Tweet's "Oops (Oh My)," which I turn up every time it comes on the car radio.

Douglas, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this morning, lots of vitalic, which is making me a bit paranoid and on-edge, white knuckles on the mouse. i think i'll switch to tarkan.

minna, Tuesday, 2 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A lot of The Gongs, new band on my label who I totally love (this is not hype).

Holger Hiller, who I now WANT TO BE.

John Cage 'Indeterminacy', a 2 CD collection of his excellent little observations, which he reads with David Tudor in the other room demolishing a piano and playing random snatches of 'The Fontana Mix'. Wonderful, listened to it first thing this morning. It should be scary, but Cage's voice is just so sissy and funny, you can't help loving it.

Now I'm wondering whether to spend $70 on a box set of 8 CDs of Cage's journal, read by him over several years. Will it be as stimulating as 'Indeterminacy'?

Momus, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Couple of verve reissues which i bought for my dads birthday but are so good i may just have to keep - dizzy gillespie (have trumpet will excite), bill evans (further conversations with myself). The new psb's release release and various fabulations like unit four plus two, 1910 fruitgum co, the foundations and several repeats of schneider's the light 3000

geoff, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't explain this....Nik Kershaw, Tears for Fears, OMD. You get the picture. Why I'm stuck in a John Hughes soundtrack, I have no idea.

Nicole, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

CD-R of personal favorites, features (among other things):

Lucky One - Alison Krauss & Union Station, You Keep Me Hanging On - J.J. nathalie, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Steve Coleman - Dropkick, Prince - Chicago march 2002, The Streets and Adult.

chaki, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

at work: boards of canada, aim, clinic, ladytron, steve earle for some unknown reason, cannibal ox, a compilation called "rapper's delight" with all old-skool tone loc, de la soul etc on it, and herb alpert, gram parsons and the rutles at home (boyfwiend's choices, he just went record shopping again the fiend).

katie, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

right now - wire. who i still don't really like.

in a minute - the new mum album, which i suspect i'm going to like a lot.

best thing i've heard recently - alice coltrane's journey to satchidananda.

toby, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Much New Order (constant thing), the Fischerspooner album, Golden Boy feat. Miss Kittin 'Rippin Kittin' and that new David Holmes compilation.

Anna, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wurk: Five Greatest Hits, random mp3s if computer allows me to download: most recently - the Sugababes/Gary Numan boot YAAAY and another extended boot of Iggy Pop/Beasties which then goes into The Strokes/The Smiths but not very well chiz chiz.

Home: THE STREETS - ORIGINAL PIRATE MATERIAL! Actually, I haven't listened to anything else since I came home on Monday. It'll probably revert back to WUTHERING HEIGHTS soon. I bought a random northern soul 7" called PANIC but can't remember who it's by, and also another Jonathan Richman CD for sooper cheap.

Sarah, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Geogaddi', Gas, Sharpside 'Belgian Resistance', Boredoms, Kylie v New Order, Thomas Koner.

stevo, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

City Rockers presents Futurism, and the fifth track on the first CD, Missy Queens Gonna Die by Tok Tok vs Soffy O is fucking great. I love it. I like the whole CD actually. Royksopps remix of "What Does it Feel Like" by Felix is great, I thought that was one of the worst tracks on the album.

I'm also listening to a mix cd I got from a friend which has most of the dance stuff I've been banging on about on ILM, plus Age of Love- Age of Love thrown in for good measure.

Other than that I'm still playing Middle of Nowhere a bit, and Johnny Cash-Solitary Man is getting a bit of a rerun too.

Ronan, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lamb, boards of canada, broadcast (yes, my very own chilled compilation, ick), a disappointing speed-garage "junglist massive" style compilation, 2manydjs (ace!), Radioactivity (mmm), Orbital various, Alan FM (minidisc singles compilation, sadly), Streets.

New project: I dug out of storage all my old cassettes so that I can minidisc them all and throw them away. So a weird mix, including the NME "Indie City" double tape, KLF cassette singles (cassingles!) Fields of the Nephilim (hee!), The Swans (!). Oh there's always been a goth element to my dance music.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Boards of Canada, Four Tet, New Order, Silver Jews, the Down From The Mountain album and for some inexpicable reason Enrique. Hero is class.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The records I've been playing most - the Streets (of course), Andrew WK (excellent album), 2 Many DJs, "The Kings And Queens Of Bollywood" compilation, 3 of the Soul Jazz Dynamite! Jamaican series I got in a sale (400% being particularly tasty), Greensleeves Sampler 22 esp. the Capleton track. I've wrestled plenty with the Futurism compilation but I'm coming to think it's ass, the "Missy Queen" and Alpenstars tracks sort of aside.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wrestled

The odd thing is just as with Kittenz and Thee Glitz I just instantly love the Futurism album. It's got me wondering whether instantly liking something is a thing to be wary of or not. I don't know really, but I can't get enough of it.

I forgot to mention Decal-404 Not Found earlier aswell. As I said on ILM, first good Irish act since MBV, who I guess are quasi-Irish really.

Ronan, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Futurism stuff for me works better in a mix - all the bootlegs I've heard using, say, Fischerspooner have been ace, and the nu- electro stuff that crops up on the Soulwax CD sounds brilliant there too (including the same tracks that bore me on Futurism) - so for me it does work, but more as a flavouring. Maybe it's just inevitable that after half a lifetime listening to the 80s inspirations for the new stuff that it'll take time for my suspicions to break down. (Or maybe it is just ass.)

Tom, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom forgot to mention the War of the Worlds.

Emma, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i sort of agree with you tom. futurism cd1 is def dull. the things that i really liked on futurism i have elsewhere (adult track is on 2manydjs frexample). is the alpinestars track on a forthcoming album dya think (i'm pretty sure i don't recognise it from BASIC), cos they've a new single out too.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who would have thort..?

Sarah, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's what I've been listening to since getting home. War of the Worlds would be too emotional for me, those plaintive "uuu-LAA"s would remind me of happy times drinking nine-pence beer....sob....

Tom, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What 9 pence beer was it? I was always a fan of "KANTERBRAU". It was like 24 for 40francs or something when I was in Cluny and Taize last year. You can have the laziest week of your life in France...

Ronan, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

UBERLAND - 4.20 euros for 24.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't argue with that. We also found OLIVER MC CARTHYS LAGER BREWED IN ENNISCORTHY COUNTY OFFALY. what madness, I didn't drink the stuff though, lord no. I've been to Enniscorthy. French supermarkets are the best places in the world. Every section is superior to over here, cheese, chocolate, and beer/wine/spirits obviously.

, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Taize? Isn't that just one large Catholic commune or summink?

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Taize is "a large christian community" so they say.

However in reality it's a really hot, really cheap place to stay with 10000 young people and lots of nice girlies. I went there with my school at Easter when I was 17 or so and I went back twice since. Some people do go to the services and I did see otherwise unreligious people talking about how magnificent it was and how fulfilled they were, but personally speaking I went there for a relaxing holiday. I may go back sometime, it's really so relaxing. Just lazing around all day. Also I got to work in the bar last year which made meeting people easier.

There's kind of discussion groups there which can be funny because you get people losing their heads over something someone says, often due to it translating badly. I remember some german girl screaming at me "I'M NOT GOD. I'M NOT JESUS. I DONT HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS OK????? OK???". er.........ok.

Ronan, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Futurism comp is brill for coding to but gets a bit dull when I actively listen to it. Saying that, the Missy Queen track is brill and if anyone knows where I can get hold of the single I'd be very grateful.

(BTW, Tom, have you been getting my emails about the ECC thing?)

RickyT, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

New for work listening! A best of Orbital compilation.

Anna, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Just before I went into hospital I worked my way through the Trembling Blue Stars back catalogue and I was half-way through listening to a tape of Belle & sebastian's Royal Albert Hall gig (done for me by Carsmile) just before I left the house to go for my ultrasound scan (which led to me being admitted). In hospital, I listened to the random selection of cds which Emma had picked up to bring in for me, which consisted of two Apples in Stereo albums (Discovery of a World Inside the Moone and Her Wallpaper Reverie), the Fashion compilation Height of Fashion, Bettie Serveert's Dust Bunnies, Work and Non Work by Broadcast, Club Anthems 2001 by Ballboy, Get Ready by New Order, King by Belly and Forever Changes by Love.

MarkH, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Missy Queen track appeals to the side of me which likes Primal Scream and New Order. I know how much you all love Bobby Gillespie.

Ronan, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

your own comp or an upcoming release?

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that was aimed at Anna's orbital comp.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I have Ricky T - I've not really thought about it yet other than yeah ace idea grate etc. I kept meaning to have a chat with Pete and Steve about it given we were in the same place all week but, um, didn't, sorry! My organisational head hasn't really got going yet since the holiday.

Tom, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Orbital comp is called 'Work: 1989 -2002' and is released on May 27th on ffrr.

Anna, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

From me: Apples in Stereo, Nina Simone, Dexys Midnight Runners, Belle and Sebastian, Call & Response, Camera Obscura.

Mark C, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Piano Magic, The Avalanches, Nsync's "Girlfriend" and Eminem's "Kids". Oh, and Ronan, I downloaded a Decal track a few months ago and I like it.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and I bought my first BLACK SABBATH record a couple of weeks ago and it's awesome. Never too late!

Tom, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes I looked at the album today but it was 30 Euro!!!!!!!!!! In their own fucking city of all places. I will try and get a free copy somehow.

That Orbital CD sounds good, I can't wait to have it in my CD player to listen to while trying to sleep after being out at something or other.

Ronan, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom you bastard I said SLAYER. ;-) I seriously can't believe that there are people who dislike Slayer. I mean what the FUCK?!?

nathalie, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm never buying a metal album. never. I may embarass myself in all sorts of ways but I'm NEVER buying a metal album.

Ronan, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eh nu metal. but nut-metal would be a good genre too

Ronan, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Afetr trying to categorise System of a Down recently (apart from "funny") I think nut-metal sums them up perfectly.

Wow, Dan, that Kenna record's not out yet? Why do I get the feeling they just haven't quite decided how to market it yet?

Considering he's being hyped as a Fred Durst discovery but sounds absolutely nothing like Limp Bizkit, I can see how the PR folks might be scratching their heads a little. What they should do is send copies of "Man Fading" and "Better Control" to alternative and pop stations and let the natural ground swell take over.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Streets

Jeff, ARGH. Okay I gotta send you the scan now. Blergh. My scanner's fuckered up. Hence no can send you jpg.
Listening to new Girls Against Boys record. No matter how much you turn the volume down, the new Girls Against Boys "You Can't Fight What You Can't See". It's okay. Very loud. Then again maybe I should turn the volume down. heh

nathalie, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay I just uh... fuckere up my sentence. heh

nathalie, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

WILD 94.9 and Ja Rule's "Pain Is Love". Busta Rhymes, Kelis and So Solid yesterday.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Been trying to catch up with all the stuff I bought over the past couple of weeks. highlights include Cult best of, the new Chemical Bros (even if that Richard Ashcroft track is the worst thing ever recorded), Simon Warner - Waiting rooms (truly wonderful and extraordinary , even the rubbish bits) and the last Human League album.

Ronan if you like that Age of Love track try to get a copy of the Flux Trax compilations, all the techno you'll ever need, at least for a week or two.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the new Chemical Bros (even if that Richard Ashcroft track is the worst thing ever recorded)

MADNESS.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I LOVE KATIE

(even if she hates bwitney)

Graham, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Only counting the last few days:

The latest New Order CD;

Fever: Kylie Minogue;

The new Chemical Bros CD. (And Dan P, it ISN'T that bad, just different;>);

One oldie: "Earthling" (David Bowie)

Nichole Graham, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing to see here

Graham, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot, I have been listening to the new-est New Order album. Why am I listening to such 80s-centric stuff? Stress?

Nicole, Wednesday, 3 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aural equivalent of comfort food, I tells ya.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hives. The Brazen Hussies (I heart "Crawfish"). Beethoven's Eighth. A silly but fun cover of "Wicked Game" by HIM. Royal Tenenbaums soundtrack. And the Stones, as usual.

Sam, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

right now, the streets and the constant chatter of european backpackers phoning home from easyeverything on TCR. Other than that, 2 many djs, geogaddi and camera obscura.

chris, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The new Chemical Bros CD. (And Dan P, it ISN'T that bad, just different;>); /

You misunderstand me, Nichole. I really like the new Chemical Brothers CD, particularly the Richard Ashcroft track. It's the album I was hoping _Surrender_ would be.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I still think Denmark is the best track on it, but everyone says it's boring just cos it's quite minimal for them.

Ronan, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Toby: eg. The Agent X remixes of The Wideboys' "Sambuca" and Mis-Teeq's "One Night Stand", the Bump & Flex dub of Mis- Teeq's "B With Me" etc. "Lotsa" maybe more optimistic than accurate.

Tim, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Oi' more fire crew. I have almost lost friends by trying to convince them how magnificent it is. Just borrowed Erik Satie's 'early piano works' from my local library, in an attempt to get into some pre- Bessie Smith music: it's pretty good. Got the Blueprint from same: starting to warm to jay Z after months of resistance....and 'Jacques Derrida' by Scritti Politti, which would be perfect but for that naff Marilyn reference

owen hatherley, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Today I have listened to Momus' 'Folktronic' and Eric B & Rakim's 'Paid In Full'.

DG, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fear my lack of HTML skillz!

Dan Perry, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonnie's otm about Hero by the way. Enrique in fantastic single shocker, and a great video too.

chris, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Enrique is snogging Anna Kornacova (sp) in his new video. Are they married? I thought I read that they were.

In the last 24 hours I have listened to: Lali Puna, Sigur Ros, Lotion, Therapy? and the Ramones. I also watched the Box, and liked the new Sugarbabes new single (the video is cool, they are like vampires seeking out their new member and fighting!), and the J-Lo/Ja Rule remix...I did not like the something or another cartel song about Champagne (some garage thing).

jel --, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think that's the pay as you go cartel, bracketed as Sentimental things from what I remember.

At the end of the video for Hero, Ms Kournikova looks straight into the camera while Enrique leers over her and you can almost hear the words "see what I'm doing now Sergei, you peasant"

chris, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now would be a good time to say that I hate Anna Kournikova almost as much as I hate Ma$e. Enrique can have her bitchy ass.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael Mayer - Immer
Moodymann - Forevernevermore
Soul Center - Soul Center III
The Human League - Travelogue

And Central Line's "Walking Into Sunshine" over and over and over and over and over... There's a local station that plays lots of '80s R&B, so I've been listening to lots of that lately.

Andy K, Thursday, 4 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cheers tim.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love you Alang.

Sarah, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

88 lines about 33 girls.

anthony, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm trying to listen to a new band (new to lame-o me!) every day! Today I listened to Mum (gorgeous though not sure about the vocalist), yesterday I listened to Cex (feh).

Tom, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been looking (okay, albeit not very hard) for the Mum record for a while. What's it like by way of comparison?

Jonnie, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, is that through downloads, or do you buy shed loads of CDs?

Sarah, err, I assume that's for posting skeelo, not for listening to DISCO. In which case I will post up a Spearmingt bootleg - tho Mink Deville sample song count already? No.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Disco++! Spearmint--. Spearmint boot-------------------------!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sarah, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Downloads, and only one track too.

Mum? Well this is going on one track but basically it sounds like what Boards of Canada would sound like if their melodies were actually as nice as you mentalist lot claimed. And there's singy bits too.

(That is a shit description sorry.)

Tom, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Singy bits' now I see why you are FAMOUS INTERWEB JOURNO Tom that is amazing prose innit!

Sarah, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well what else am I meant to call them eh?

Tom, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

umm... vocals?

katie, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'bewildering chanteusism' OBV

Sarah, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah but what if they were speaky vocals not singy ones eh Katie! Blimey I can see why you are not a famous interweb journalist with that sloppy approach to detail.

Tom, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

chanteurism?

Sarah, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for the effort Tom ; ). A friend has just left the theme tune to The Greatest American Hero on my voicemail and it has cheered me up no end. And I was already pretty cheery!

Jonnie, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Which I admit is French for 'singy bits'.

Sarah, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bugger, now my tripod site has shut down due to excessive bandwidth usage! K-blimey. I can't believe 1 GB of downloads since I posted that URL up there. It's only 6MB, which = over 150 downloads of it. Are there that many people reading this thread. Surely not. What's going on?

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

alright VOCAL MELODIES then smarty pantz :) not as poetic as Sarah's suggestion i'll admit...

katie, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This afternoon i listened to Amon Dull 2 and Anthrax.

jel --, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

First Throwing Muses album. Haven't listened to it for a few months and it's even better than I remember it being.

RickyT, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hmm, slavishly conforming to ILE chart and internet journalist famous types I audio-g'd some Mum. is nice. might be tempted to hear more.

Unfinished biz 1: Sam, bsx.

Unfinished biz 2: There is now a link to the skee-lo song on my rubbish website. I can't give links like that above (which durnt work now), as it is counted as CHEATING, what with you not seeing some crap ad that way.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm actually listening to THE FREED UNIT's Day Glo album...

Newish music worth checking out: Transistor Six and Printed Circuit.

jel --, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Evapor-8" by thee almighty ALTERN8. I love them so much I would buy them each a ham.

Dan Perry, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

FUNKYTOWN!

(thank you Mr Abebe)

Graham, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know Radio 1 probably killed this with mucho airplay, but I just palmed "Simple Things" by Zero 7. Dangerous, since I'd only listened to "Destiny" and one other track I can't remember....

Tom (or all): Is the new Low-Fis CD worth buying? "Sleeping Faster" isn't a bad track, but I'm not spending $16 for a coaster...

Nichole Graham, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

baseball, life without buildings 'any other city,' hot hot heat's ep on sub pop (for fans of the easy cure!), 'a night at the opera.'

maura, Friday, 5 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

FUNKYTOWN

I remember last year I was in some country town in Ireland for a weekend with friends and there was a shop called Chunky Pine. I came out of the pub quite drunk one night and there it was, so for the duration of the taxi home I sang about taking me to chunky pine.

In other news, those of you who find Futurism boring are mentalists, it's fantastic! Dance music with no hooks.....

And I could write a thousand words about Royksopps remix of What Does It Feel Like.

Ronan, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

MTV all night. I'm rather enjoying it. But then I just noticed I'm including Nickelback in that, something may be aglay.

Graham, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nickelback are good.

jel --, Saturday, 6 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cher, "Girls in the Garage Part 2", "In the Beginning There was Rhythm", Olivia Newton-John, the Au Pairs, the Raul Julia version of "The Three Penny Opera", and "Judy Garland Speaks!"

rosemary, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That Judy thing is amazing. Makes yer skin crawl, though.

Earlier today, Apoptygma Berzerk and an OMD tribute comp. Now, a bunch of live takes on "A Forest" by the Cure.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 7 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

GOTH!

RickyT, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My new artist-a-day update:

Saturday - Holger Hiller on recommendation of Momus. Not bad, needs more attention.

Sunday - Nickelback for the first time on UK Top 40. Dire.

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim's two CD UK Hip-hop compilation. Including proper Hippy-Hop which I fear I have fallen in love with (Butterfly Concerto) even though it is even tweer that Chris T-T's Hedgehog Song. (What is more hippy, an indie song from the perspective of a hedgehog or a hip-hop track from the perspective of a butterfly).

Out Da Ville is da bomb btw.

Pete, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes ditto! Best track on either CD in my opn. is Taskforce's "Cosmic Gypsies". Space is the place!

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Butterfly Concerto better - but Taskforce appear to be the bunch to look out for being responsible for both.

I haven't listened to Disk 2 that much yet though Cosmic Gypsies did sound good.

Pete, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Holger Hiller is grate: is it a new one though? Or "A Bunch of Foulness in the Pit"

mark s, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a 2000 CD on Mute - I gave it one listen on a walkman while trying to cross London, about as un-ideal circumstances as you can imagine really. Judgement withheld for now.

Tom, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

After obsessing over the Wildbunch song on toomanydjs (yes, late as usual all you scenesters, grr) I am now md'ing loads of mp3s from their own site.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

GOTH!

And?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's just jealous.

Dan Perry, Monday, 8 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Artist-a-day update.

Monday - TWEET! Excellent. Also filthy tale of self-love.

Today - Daver Popshots' favourites SPOON. Slightly above run-of-the- mill indie rock but nothing special.

Graham, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 14 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Scott Herren's "other" projects, Savath + Savalas and Delarosa & Asora. My brother is quite keen on them and so am I.

MRI - All That Glitters, and Michael Mayer's Immer mix cd: both wonderfully swoony microhouse to the max0r, both essential.

Pram - Telemetric Melodies: Tim dips into Pram. Cor the critics were right it's Stereolab meets Laika.

Dan Perry, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mogwai - in order to write about them for blog. I hope they become a full-blown song-focused band.

Aren't they, though? I mean, I don't see why "Mogwai Fear Satan" isn't a song, to name one example.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Masters of the Hemisphere - Protest a Dark Anniversary! On my third play of the day, my favourite band today, though they ain't singing about evil dogs anymore!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 5 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Today I have BRENTON WOOD on replay. His brown eyed sooooooooouuuuul is sooooo sweet. That slightly rough voice is so sexeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I actually heard Alex Chilton on the radio with his "Oogum Boogum Song" which I really liked. My dad gave me his Wood CD cuz he had a hit with that song.

1) Source Direct - Controlled Developments: just previously inspired by making a jungle list for John Darnielle. Nasty.
2) Tweet - "Motel" and "Drunk": the songs that for me feel closest to Sterling's great review.
3) Afuken - My Way: ever-so-awesome. Cut-ups like Todd Edwards, yeah, but emotions like Todd Edwards too.
4) Eagle E & Doc B - "Pure Rumours": Epic ragga/garage/hip hop/ska/pop extravaganza. Ebullient, eerie and impossibly expansive.
5) Markus Guentner - "Syndrom" from Festplatten's unser:eins comp. of fantastic Kompakt-style bizarre tech- house. "Syndrom" is bliss-speckled ambient breakbeat pop up there with "Papua New Guinea". 6) Phil Stumpf - "du kannst nicht tanzen": also from unser:eins, this is dirty, sexy grit-house pop. 7) 2 Many DJs mp3s: see everyone else's praise for these. Endlessly enjoyable. 8) Sticky - More Weed!: should be covered by S Club 7 immediately. 9) Kode9's "Nu-Dark Swing" mix (availablehere): gathers together most of my favourite recent dark 2-step tracks, and makes the ones I didn't like sound awesome.

Ten recs I listened to yesterday:

'Stormcock' - Roy Harper (my new fave alb)

'The Genius Sings The Blues' - Ray Charles (best singing evah)

'Absolutely Freak Out (Zap Your Mind!!)' - Acid Mothers Temple (wicked drones)

'Good Old Boys' - Randy Newman (concept alb!)

'Your Ace From Space' - U Roy (terrific toastin')

'Plays It Cool' - Charles Mingus (VFM 'budget' comp of tracks that CM recorded for the Candid label in 1960 - includes a terrific version of 'Weird Nightmare'/'Smooch' called 'Vassarlean')

'Duo Exchange' - Rashied Ali/Frank Lowe (Great free jazz blowin' sesh - "Sounds like a donkey being tickled" - M. Skidmore)

'Record Without A Cover' - Christian Marclay (reissue)

'We Didn't Say That' - Daphne and Celeste (one of the most varied albs ever made!)

cuba libre (nathalie), Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Most recently Foxy Brown and DJ Shadow heaps - both of which are strongest when they're at their least hip hop (Foxy's great when she's trying to be a badgyal from Jamaica, and the Shadow=Goth theory is spot on). Both fantastic, tho obv. very different.

Ali's Heavy Starch. Ali's the "leader" of the St. Lunatics and as such he's a bit like Leonardo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - the one with no personality and no fun. But Nelly's on there a lot and Murphy Lee (whom I luv) even more so - he's like the Ghostface Killa to Ali's Raekwon. And primary producer Jason "Jay" Epperson - who does nearly all the great Nelly/Lunatics stuff - is so on form here, it's the most thrilling joint-popping bounce since Mannie Fresh's heyday (for a guy who's produced all of Nelly's hits bar the most recent, Epperson is *massively* underrated).

Dub Taylor's Detect - this is *so* the quintessential Force Tracks album, and maybe it suffers a bit for that because I sort of dismiss when I'm not playing it and then realise when I do play it that it's quite wunnerful.

Playhouse's Famous When Dead comp. which is like the best bits of "house" from the seventies (disco not disco-ish), eighties dance music (electro and Mr. Fingers-style deep house) and nineties dance music (early NY garage, phasing and microhouse) all mashed together into a glorious whole.

Lots of Sonic Youth in half-conscious preparation for Murray Street - reconfirmed that Washing Machine is in fact my favourite SY by a comfortable distance. "Becuz"! "Panty Lines'! "No Queen Blues"! The title track! "The Diamond Sea"! It can't be beat.

, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll spot you "The Diamond Sea," yes. ;-)

Lazy me still actually hasn't heard the Shadow yet, but you say he's more goth than ever or something? Heh heh heh.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mostly listening to music in the gym -- Sonic Youth 'Murray Street'; Breeders 'Title TK' (unexpectedly good on the rowing machine); Akufen; 2 Many DJs; 'The Eminem Show'; El P 'Fantastic Damage'. Have just bought: MRI 'All That Glitters'; Xlinsyst (sp.?). Before that: 'Tweet'.

i reiterate - the hampton grease band album is f'n brilliant crazy shit. it was the worst selling record in the history of CBS records in 1970-something & now it turns up on ebay all the time for like $20US or so. you shd get it if you can, it is so great.

Due to my current state (pass me some tissue, will ya >:|), I'm currently listening to the following:

1. All of Prince's slow jams esp. "The Beautiful Ones" (my fix for the day)

2. Tweet's album I've exhausted track #14- "Drunk.

3. Laryn Hill's Unplugged 2.0 album *Unquestionably exceptional album. Both raw and vulnerable. Emotional and triumphant. Her best yet, despite what many critics say.

4. Carmen Silva.

I've been playing "Murray Street" all day. Most Sonic Youth records take time to get into but I loved this instantly. Maybe it's too familiar and I might tire of it in a few weeks? I got Jouneys Greatest Hits for 5 euro today and it's terrible. But it has "Any way you want it" which is fantastic. I always thought that was a Cheap Trick song.

Listened to almost no records this year -- but am going to the odd concert. Last Tuesday went to a recital of solo works by new music classical composers near Kings Cross. Its a minor miracle whenever this stuff gets put on -- really tough sounding stuff from the likes of Richard Barrett, Aaron Cassidy, Roger Redgate and James Dillon, which has all that important collective energy that makes up for the isolated scene these people work in, as well as the mixed results that often go with the works themselves where there is still much "to play for".

For me, its quite nice listening to things in your face when you're not also living with the stuff on record. That won't carry on (lots to investigate and listen to) but, for now, it'll do.

I love the slightly preemptory tone of the moderator in the beginning, which I think is typically French: may be interpreted as rude without meaning to be, in contrast to the ever so not outright forthcoming Scottish. All my own stereotypes -- sorry.

Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea : heard a French cover version on KUCI on the way home from Sprouts market to buy beans, bread, cheese, and asparagus ; the French pop show was glorious ; this is another band that I missed in their time but for the first time in my own lifetime

Also other things one can listen to on youtube such as Hatful of Hollow and Sweetness by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions and Hit Parade by the Wedding Present
