Ho HO! No, of course I mean the game with sticks and balls and wanky shoes. Do we like it? It gets a very bad press, but does it deserve it? Or is it just 99% of the playas who are twats? Tell me, goddamit!

And loathe as I am to disagree with Mark S, Caddyshack's greatness is surely despite the golf stuff, not because of it. (This is also true of the qualities of Updike and Wodehouse on the subject.)
I've always associated it with appalingly-dressed middle-aged upper- middle-class white racists not letting Jews or black people into their stupid fucking clubs. How much dudder could anything get?
Crazy golf=Classic, however. Despite Andrew L injuring me once while playing it!

shot 85 (11+) at a par 74/6500 yd course in troon today in the howling wind. jack nicklaus shot 82 here at the height of his powers in 1966 so I'm chuffed with that - especially considering it included a horrendous 6 at a par 3 (hit from bunker to bunker) and two careless doubles

There are occasional links courses in the States, sort of as a novelty -- are there many US style parkland courses in the British Isles?
― Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Sunday, 28 August 2011 18:36 (fourteen years ago)
the types of courses you tend to get are: links, parkland, heathland/moorland, hillside
imagine the parkland courses we have here aren't quite as ~lush~ but they are still green, with soily turf. much prefer links. hate hillside courses
― god hates frogbs (cozen), Sunday, 28 August 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)
my local course (inland, just out of the city) is a typical parkland course
― god hates frogbs (cozen), Sunday, 28 August 2011 18:42 (fourteen years ago)
there are no desert courses in britain iirc ;)
― god hates frogbs (cozen), Sunday, 28 August 2011 18:44 (fourteen years ago)
That would be a novelty course. It wouldn't be hard to simulate the terrain, though! Just the temperatures.
I played Lake Shastina once in far northern California, a bit north of Mount Shasta. The front was parkland, with a lot of changes in elevation, but the back nine was links-ish, very flat, few trees, and with a neverending wind blowing down from Shasta. A real test of club selection, with long holes into the wind, short holes with the wind behind you, and vice versa. A really really fun course.
― Halal Spaceboy (WmC), Sunday, 28 August 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)
played the work's golf day today... 3rd out of 12, playing off 12. gutted though, out in +4 (39) but junked it on the second nine carding a 47 (+12)
not fussed about winning but annoyed about shitting up my card on the back 9, especially when the back 9 was quite a bit easier all-told. lost concentration/energy or something. was playing with the CEO and getting no chat... all game-face. not ideal, sometimes you want a bit of banter to take your mind off the golf in-between shots

― johnny crunch, Friday, 6 April 2012 11:04 (fourteen years ago)
Stenson's 18th hole1- 3W duck hook into trees left and short of fairway.2- Half topped attempted 40 yard bump under and through trees back to fairway (ended up 5 yards short of fairway in woodchip spectator walkway3-Long iron to the green topped about 120 yards4-Straight at pin but overshoots the green maybe 10 yards5-Chip fails to make the green6- Putt from the fringe 6 feet beyond cup7-Miss8-Holed
Some of the driving y'day was just appalling, like 40-50 yards off line (I'm looking at you Phil/Tiger)

zach johnson won in the states last week, could be worth a shot at 66-1. so many long-priced possibles there though, the allure of betting on golf before a ball has been hit.

Matt Kuchar or Peter Hansen are my outsiders. It should be noted that I never actually place hard earned money down on these things.

How about Snedeker at 175-1. Dufner could be a good call, but he may be more of a target golf guy. Zach Johnson really hot lately, i could see those odds narrow as more money put on him closer to tomorrow.

I find it impossible to make predictions on the British because so much seems to depend on whether your game is suitable to the course and conditions.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 13:37 (thirteen years ago)
maybe woods is the right pick at this point because he is almost exclusively playing that low stinging fade which seems perfect for Open style golf. OBviously he's not a longshot.

love the way the narrative of the open every year is "not enough wind, those americans don't know their born" with a faint edge of boredom as everyone annihilates the course v "horrible, horrible stuff, only the strong survive" as some deathly rain and wind rips everyone to pieces.

That was tough. Sorry, LocalGarda.
I kept thinking during the afternoon that it all seemed too easy for Scott, that guys rarely coast to a major, but that even if he fall back a couple of strokes, it wouldn't matter--Els couldn't make a putt, and the other three guys were all over the place. Majors are just so unpredictable over the final few holes.

Last major of the year. Tiger was listed as the favourite yesterday--9-1, with Donald next at 18-1--which surprises me, but I guess that's simply guided by where bettors are actually putting their money. Absent that, I wouldn't make him the favourite in a major right now. The only logical favourite these days is whoever hasn't won one within the last four years.
― clemenza, Thursday, 9 August 2012 13:34 (thirteen years ago)
Woods is just one of the guys now, which is actually an improvement over the last 2 years, but really they're all just one of the guys now. No one player or two players have separated themselves from the pack in the last 4 years so I guess he's as much a favourite as anyone else.
I have no clue who'll win this. Dustin Johnson maybe? Even tho' he's having a less than stellar season.

this is going to ruffle some feathers
"What makes it such an awful position to be in is I have grown up my whole life playing for Ireland under the Golfing Union of Ireland umbrella, But the fact is, I’ve always felt more British than Irish. Maybe it was the way I was brought up, I don’t know, but I have always felt more of a connection with the UK than with Ireland. And so I have to weigh that up against the fact that I’ve always played for Ireland and so it is tough. Whatever I do, I know my decision is going to upset some people but I just hope the vast majority will understand."

"big Ulster rugby fan etc" a polite way of saying it
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:10 (thirteen years ago)
it might ruffle some feathers but surely the majority of ppl are far enough along now to realise that UK citizens living in NI might identify with that side of the heritage as easily and legitimately as eg Irvine insisting on the tricolour in F1. Can't imagine it'll be a big deal.
Forget it jake, it's Portadown
― Randy Carol (darraghmac), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:16 (thirteen years ago)
what is annoying is it will slightly affect our ability to cheer him on as one of our own, and that's going to be important when he starts winning 3/4 majors a year.
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:29 (thirteen years ago)
if you accept that, you lose at least some of the ability to cheer any of the NI athletes. I don't think he has a problem with being claimed by both sides, it's got to be something that all NI celebrities are aware of. Can't imagine that he's asking the irish to stop cheering for him, he's just clarifying his own position, which he's obv got the right to do.
I don't find it gratifying when someone who identifies as Irish feels the need to use their celebrity to have a go at the UK heritage of NI either.
― Randy Carol (darraghmac), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:37 (thirteen years ago)
it's not really that I'd stop from the POV of disowning him or something, more that I'd feel less entitled to do so after he's had to sort of declare himself as UK. but yeah of course will always root for him. what's weird is that both him and g-mac seem Irish to me.
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:47 (thirteen years ago)

https://twitter.com/McIlroyRory/status/245216699652132864/photo/1/large
everything about McIlroy suggests he's the product of a mixed marriage. as you say, it's going to be an issue with NI celebs. I think he could become someone for both communities, sort of like Best (who was Protestant iirc).
I'm p sure Gmac leans Irish but I understand why neither of them want to come down firmly on one side. They wave the NI flag after tournaments.

I'll root for Tiger, as always. I'm still on the fence as to whether he'll ever win another major. I feel like it's like an all-or-nothing question: if he's able to win one, he'll then breeze past Nicklaus within the next few years.

Wow--that would drop him to one under. My first thought was that (somehow) the network would never allow him be disqualified from a major where he was two back going into the weekend. I don't know: Augusta is supposedly all-powerful when it comes to dictating what's what, but then television can be too. Anyway, the penalty could effectively end his chances anyway, though it's still early.

― Tom D (Tom D.), Saturday, 13 April 2013 14:00 (thirteen years ago)
Okay, the 3 examples I can see of where they may not dq someone for a breach of the rules aren't anything like Tiger did. i)a double hit not felt by the competitor or seen by his playing partner only picked up via super slow replay. ii)HD tv replay showing a few grains of sands being displaced during backswing when playing from wall of a bunker iii) when replacing a marked ball on the putting green pushing the ball frwd a tiny amount but being sure that it oscillated back to it's original spot only to discover on HD replay that it did not.

― clemenza, Saturday, 13 April 2013 15:13 (thirteen years ago)
i really had no idea about this rule change - traditionally he would be disqualified. i guess the point of the new rule is that there are so many people (television viewers) other than the player himself, his fellow-competitor, or rules officials who can see a breach of the rules which no one else would reasonably notice. it sort of goes against the sport's tradition of self-policing and i'd imagine a lot of people think he should withdraw

As my posts here indicate, I've rooted for Tiger Woods long past the point of most people. But it's sad to go to cnnsi.com this morning and see that their front-page story is again one Michael Rosenberg defending Tiger playing on, and explaining all the bad luck he's had to keep him from the lead. Not Angel Cabrera, who gets a link tucked underneath: "Snedeker, Cabrera share Round 3 lead." That's not Woods' fault--they really ought to give this writer some time off, though.

thank you for alerting me to the existence of this guy; he is hilarious
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 14 April 2013 16:02 (thirteen years ago)
The weirdest thing is not just dwelling on the penalty, but still making a big deal about the shot that led to it, the one off the flagstick back into the water. Hitting a good golf shot and getting a less than favourable result--that never ever happens in golf, right?
"And at the 8th hole on Saturday, a short birdie circled the cup before spinning out."
Again--unheard of. This is a bizarre chain of events Tiger's been subjected to.
― clemenza, Sunday, 14 April 2013 17:28 (thirteen years ago)
to be fair, both those were very unusual -- tiger himself said hed never seen a lip out like that one. & im sure theres some advanced stats out there abt hitting the pin, it's gotta be like once in a thousand approach shots or something?
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 14 April 2013 17:33 (thirteen years ago)
dont get me wrong, that article was garbage
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 14 April 2013 17:34 (thirteen years ago)
Hitting a great/perfect shot into a hazard doesn't happen often.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 14 April 2013 17:37 (thirteen years ago)
that lip out was wild
it spun round the whole cup
― cozen, Sunday, 14 April 2013 17:41 (thirteen years ago)
I just watched the shot again, and I think you can make the argument that--like any shot that hits the flagstick on the fly--it wasn't a good shot at all. If it doesn't hit the stick, maybe he ends up on the other side of the green--depends how much spin he had on it. The line was obviously perfect; the weight, I don't know.
― clemenza, Sunday, 14 April 2013 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

I notice that cnnsi.com doesn't have Michael Rosenberg on the front page (or anywhere) today, assuring everyone that Tiger's got this one locked up. Instead, Cameron Morfit:
"A good spot. What do we make of that? He's been in other good spots at the majors over the last five years, getting within a few strokes of the lead or even in the lead through two rounds. Each time he's fallen down the board, sometimes way down. Woods used to be as predictable as gravity, but now he's more like the weather."
A little more realistic, I'd say.

i'm getting the Ken Venturi's watching this MS tournament
once played a 6 hour round when it was 95F with high humidity. worst day of my golfing life.
― lipitor retriever (brownie), Saturday, 20 July 2013 20:59 (twelve years ago)
Christ, I don't even wanna think about it. All I did was run errands in Tupelo today, in an air conditioned truck, and I was drenched when I got home and finished unloading stuff. Had to change everything but my socks. I've played in this heat before, but I was a younger man.
― schlock corridor (WilliamC), Saturday, 20 July 2013 23:22 (twelve years ago)
Come on Westwood!
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 13:30 (twelve years ago)
Poulter is going insane.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 13:46 (twelve years ago)
3x birdies and one eagle
Westwood drops to -2
yea poulter is unconscious
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 21 July 2013 13:48 (twelve years ago)
o_0 poulter
― k3vin k., Sunday, 21 July 2013 13:49 (twelve years ago)
Just misses another, still he is on par with five holes left.
Tiger drops a shot - may it continue.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 13:52 (twelve years ago)
Westwood manages a birdie after fiding a bunker on the 5th!
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:15 (twelve years ago)
Poulter drops one, fun while it lasted.
Westwood looking solid - surely this time..
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:31 (twelve years ago)
Just when i say that its bunker meltdown
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:37 (twelve years ago)
That was huge--thought he was headed for a 6.
― clemenza, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:41 (twelve years ago)
Incredible putt by Scott - two in a row. Tiger doesn't help himself to an easier one so its par for the major drought to almost certainly continue.
Fantastic putt by Westwood to drop the one. That could be huge! xp
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:41 (twelve years ago)
Poulter is just screaming out there to find a great 2nd shot from the rough.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:43 (twelve years ago)
Stenson rly should've sunk that in.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:48 (twelve years ago)
westwood is grinding really hard, all the blood in his body is in his head
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:49 (twelve years ago)
I know no one shares this, but it's so frustrating rooting for Tiger the past few years. At some point, he digs himself into a hole every major now.
― clemenza, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:52 (twelve years ago)
3x straight birdies for Scott.
Westwood drops another one...oh dear
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:53 (twelve years ago)
xyzzzz jinxed lee something fierce
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:53 (twelve years ago)
Tiger does get a birdie!
Its all going wrong - three way tie for the lead now.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:54 (twelve years ago)
I'm in the weird position of wanting Tiger to win, with Westwood my second choice. It'd be a lot easier if they were both far ahead of the field.
― clemenza, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:55 (twelve years ago)
i can't really decide if i like westwood or not
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:56 (twelve years ago)
Think Adam Scott looks the steadiest in the last few..
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:58 (twelve years ago)
yeah
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:58 (twelve years ago)
Outside of Tiger, I tend to root for stories more than players. Westwood finally winning a major would be nice.
― clemenza, Sunday, 21 July 2013 14:59 (twelve years ago)
westwood is not winninfg this
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:01 (twelve years ago)
what a shot by mahan
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:04 (twelve years ago)
Poulter shoots 67 - doubt anyone will better this today.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:05 (twelve years ago)
Westwood going down...
Tiger drops another again...
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:06 (twelve years ago)
Takes a par 5 for Westwood to stop the rot.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:08 (twelve years ago)
Phil...think I'd like to be where he is, playing a few holes up ahead.
― clemenza, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:09 (twelve years ago)
stacked leaderboard jesus
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:10 (twelve years ago)
Mickelson now one behind. If Westwood doesn't win it then its Mickelson or Scott, if only to erase the awful memories of last year.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:11 (twelve years ago)
Scott leading the Open!
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:19 (twelve years ago)
Another by Mickelson!
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:23 (twelve years ago)
Westwood hanging on for two tough pars. But remains one behind Scott.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:30 (twelve years ago)
nice little run by phil
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:31 (twelve years ago)
ooh, its gonna be a tricky one for par y Phil.
Scott hits a wayward one into the rough.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:35 (twelve years ago)
haha phil trickles that one in!
Westwood has a chance for birdie on the 12th
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:36 (twelve years ago)
miracle shot from scott
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:38 (twelve years ago)
westwoods really righted himself last few holes
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:38 (twelve years ago)
Another par for Westwood - that's four in a row. If he keeps doing that he'll win
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:40 (twelve years ago)
Scott misses!! Now sharing the lead
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:41 (twelve years ago)
gettin messy out there
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:41 (twelve years ago)
ffs! Awful from Westwood.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:43 (twelve years ago)
where did that even end up
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)
Massive par for Mickelson
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:45 (twelve years ago)
fuck knows xp
yea phil is at least gonna post something where poulter can catch his flight
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:45 (twelve years ago)
"Followed the advice of his caddy: 'Keep hitting good shots.'"
So that's why they get the big bucks.
― clemenza, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:46 (twelve years ago)
nice recovery from W/Wood. Can he get a par?
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:48 (twelve years ago)
drops another, one behind.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:49 (twelve years ago)
lol @ zach losing his balance
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:50 (twelve years ago)
it was too exciting.
Scott hit a laughable putt. Mickelson looking good.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:52 (twelve years ago)
back-to-back bogeys for scott.
Mickelson has an eagle putt to come.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:54 (twelve years ago)
Birdie Mickelson - two ahead!
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:58 (twelve years ago)
Westwood falls short for another par
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)
If Mickelson doesn't drop a shot then I think that will be it actually.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)
Man I love watching Tiger - no one believes he can do anything in the last afternoon of a major, not least himself.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:05 (twelve years ago)
Another anaemic putt by Scott - at least not the meltdown of last year.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:06 (twelve years ago)
wow! Mickelson misses the bunker - great bounce but hes played great!
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:08 (twelve years ago)
lol @ drop in the bunker for Tiger - this man provides joy in awful times.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:11 (twelve years ago)
Your Tiger hate is intense.
― clemenza, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:13 (twelve years ago)

― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:14 (twelve years ago)
Mickelson winning this would be incredible
― frogbs, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:14 (twelve years ago)
that was some immaculate sunday golf
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:14 (twelve years ago)
And Westwood misses by a whisker. three behind, another major slips by!
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:15 (twelve years ago)
yea 66 not bad
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:15 (twelve years ago)
66 on a Sunday in an Open (either one) to come from behind, I wonder how many times that's been done. Fewer than 10, I bet.
― clemenza, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:18 (twelve years ago)
Especially after the disappointment of the US open, its pretty special.
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:19 (twelve years ago)
next yrs us open is @ pinehurst, where phil has 1 of his 2nds (99 to payne stewart)
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:36 (twelve years ago)

― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 17:05 (twelve years ago)
For the record: a *deep breath* first-time kind of gem from Peter Alliss: *ball hits the fairway and pulls back*..."oh that's bad"...*pulls back* "oh that's horrid"...*pulls back some more*"oh that's 'write-your-letter-to-the-Times' bad".
I didn't want to smash my TV anyway..
― xyzzzz__, Sunday, 21 July 2013 17:36 (twelve years ago)
I know Tiger usually owns this course but he's two pars away from a 59 right now
― frogbs, Friday, 2 August 2013 20:34 (twelve years ago)
oops that isn't accurate - he needs to birdie 18
― frogbs, Friday, 2 August 2013 20:37 (twelve years ago)
crazy round. that par on 18 was amazing.
― lipitor retriever (brownie), Friday, 2 August 2013 22:16 (twelve years ago)

John Daly is 56-years-old and currently tied for the lead at the PGA Championship. Legend. pic.twitter.com/6T4RFVj2me— Joe Pompliano (@JoePompliano) May 19, 2022

John Daly was at +100000 to win the PGA Championship — that means a $10 bet would pay $10,000 😂And yes, I know he's only through 7 holes. It's still awesome.— Joe Pompliano (@JoePompliano) May 19, 2022
wonder how much money he's got on himself :)

Amazing piece, especially as the UK and parts of the US state attack and deny trans and abortion rights.

* not the UK for abortion but certainly The Guardian UK publishes anti-trans rhetoric day and night. I wouldn't be all high and mighty about Saudi's crimes without a hint of reflection as to where that's coming from.

was a great finish. so happy for Matt Fitzpatrick. Only missing 1 green in reg in the final round is some playing. scheffler and zalatoris were good. rahm was terrible.
― oscar bravo, Monday, 20 June 2022 19:37 (three years ago)
i thought wills put on 18 was good as soon as it left the putter. matts shot out of the sand is an all timer

yea crazy to put himself in that position in the sand on 18…. in his interview after winning he said the shot he had to least confidence in overall was a bunker long iron shot… good on him to pull it off
― johnny crunch, Monday, 20 June 2022 20:16 (three years ago)
also hat tip to schlefflers front nine especially the approach to #1 out of the divot, great attitude and execution.
― oscar bravo, Monday, 20 June 2022 20:18 (three years ago)
felt like the whole tournament was scotties to lose and he lost it on holes 10-14 on sat/sun. especially Saturday.

i thought wills put on 18 was good as soon as it left the putter.
