Most classic drink: Gin and Tonic Best beer: Caledonian Flying Scotsman Best Exotic Drink: "Death By Fruit" (involves various fruit liquers mixed in with a deadly amount of absinthe) Most effective drunk (and least painful hangover): Vodka and Coke
Oh, I could wax poetic all night. ::happy grin:: And soon I'll be able to drink again! Hooray!

Cosmopolitans ARE yummy....... I had a gorgeous cocktail made of blue Smirnoff and blackberries and soda called (imaginatively) a black and blue. It was blimming marvellous. Though they stuck a stoopid cherry in it.
But in general you can't beat rum and coke (not Bacardi, Captain Morgan).
― Emma, Thursday, 14 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
Green drinks also tend be awesome. Has anyone _ever_ had a green drink that tasted like "melon"? (The apple ones do tend to taste like apple, I'll admit.)
Ingredients: -2 fingers absinthe -1 finger midori -1 finger malibu rum -big helping of pineapple juice -dash of mango or guava juice
And any other fruit juices you happen to have lying around. Never has a GIRLY drink reduced so many grown men to a state of utter foetal drunkenness so fast. Mwah hah hah!

Guinness is tar. Blech. All this strawberry nut blonde pale ale stout lime twist spritzer micro-brewery crap all tastes like wet stalks of barley. Of course, most wine (red, white, other) reminds me of a stiff shot of vinegar, so what do I know?
The wine thing really SUCKS, as a really nice wine can be a glorious thing. I sort of see where you're coming from, though, especially with a cheap red. In my experience, a really dry chilled chardonnay can be a gateway into a world of vintny goodness.
As opposed o carbonated beverages...?
Coke, or the equivalent carbonated beverage, tastes approximately the same coming up as it does going down, except minus the carbonation. Milk starts to digest almost as soon as it hits the stomach- meaning that when it comes back up, it is a half-digested mucousy MESS.
Sorry for those of you who didn't want to know that. Dan did ask!

Tracer, I love that idea. It adds an additional sense of ritual to the whole thing (and I think it's partly the complicated ritual that I like most) but darn it if I'm not allergic to dust, so I'd have to use just the *tiniest* amount.

The Gin and Tonic. (Preferably double, with a slice of lime on a Sunday if I am feeling fancy). Accept no imitations.

Crushed ice, crushed mint, dark brown sugar, splash of ginger ale(dry), lots of vodka, shake.
G&T, tanquery, or bombay saphire, lime and schwepps for preferance, fresh lime juice
Fresh lime juice vodka and soda
I've never ot my head round rum. My dad keeps banging on about martinique aged rum, i must get him to offer me some.

There's this place out in Lenox, MA, that serves a martini-style drink called an Orange Bliss. I can't remember all the ingredients, but orange juice, Absolut Mandarin, and Alize are involved. Tastes just like Orangina until you stand up to go to the restroom... WHOA.

I've pretty much decided that any drink with 151 rum in it is wonderful. I remember playing some drinking game in a hotel lobby with my brother, my cousin, and my cousin's friend where we were drinking 151. Cousin's friend was losing badly. He got up four times to go to the barthroom:
FIRST TIME - He hopped up, jogged over to the bathroom, jogged back. We continued play.SECOND TIME - He got up a little slower, carefully made his way over to the bathroom, carefully made his way back. After a moderate amount of teasing due to his lightweightness, play continued.THIRD TIME - By this point, cousin's friend was laughing like a pederast. He wobbled to his feet, staggered over to the bathroom, staggered back, and demanded more 151. Because we are evil, we gave it to him.FOURTH TIME - Cousin's friend had completely lost the ability to focus his eyes. All of his speech was wildly incoherent and his head started to twitch. He lurched to his feet and attempted to head towards the bathroom, but his body was so confused that he actually began moving sideways. We eventually got him moving forward, but when he left the bathroom he was back to moving sideways. He ended up collapsing in a heap next to his chair and giggling.
I think he drank less than a pint of the stuff. 151 is fucking awesome.

A classic dry vodka martini for me has to be made with Moskovskya or Finlandia (Russky Standard, Cristal and Stolychnya are all too sweet).
For Gin martinis Bombay saphire or Tanquery (regular strength not export, not plymouth either).
However my favorite martini is a Zubrowvka Martini. Bison grass vodka sets off the splash of vermouth just perfectly.
Oh and the vermouth must be Noilly Prat, Martini lacks something in flavour in its extra dry incarnation.

I said "american-type", refering to a style of beer also known as a "light-lager" among other names that comprises at least 99% of all beer drunk in America. It is a pale, barely hopped beer that is meant to be drunk very cold to render it as flavourless as possible. It can come from any country (e.g. heinekin, corona, labatts), but its still american-style light lager.
The US makes some world class beers, too bad very few actually drink them.
>That does not make us Un-American though. Do people think we all> just sit around swilling Bud Light, waiting for the war to come?*

Not that one in particluar. From the name "winter warmer" I assume its a spiced beer (and probably high in alcohol), which several breweries make around x-mass. I usually have a few then, but am pretty indifferent to the spice thing.

― nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)
Not all foreign beers are American-style beers, just the ones that try and copy the style of bud, coors, miller, etc. Its an "American" style because it was invented by American brewers, and then spread to the rest of the world. For example, Guinness is drunk in America but is not american-style beer because it is a stout: it is dark in colour, top-fermented, is more heavily hopped, has chocolatey/coffeish flavours due to its roasted malts. It is one of the few non-light-lagers with any popularity in the US.
>Which Made in America beers meet your high standards?
My standards aren't that high, I can't afford to drink the best stuff every night, but when I do drink I want something with with flavour. Of the bigger micros, Anchor and Sierra Nevada beers are good. Other good brewers are Ommengong, Allagash, Northwest Coast and Rogue. (The distribution in my state for micros is crappy so I miss out on a lot of good american beers).
>I'm glad you're here to enlighten us!
The American ILX contigent doesn't represent the typical american population, it really doesn't need much elightenment, i just like to talk beer.

As far as I'm concerned, Sauza Hornitos or Tres Generaciones (also Sauza, English needs to use brackets the way math does) -- I like TG better for shots, and like them equally as mixers. TG mixes marginally better with carbonated drinks -- I have absolutely no idea why there should be a difference with one thing like that, but there you go.
I know a lot of people like Jose Cuervo, but for me that's the bottom rung of what I'll drink -- it's the go-to brand for a lot of restaurants (maybe less so in Texas, one of our Texans could tell us), and it's all right for a margarita but I won't do it straight. It's not bad, it won't give you those bottom-shelf tequila hangovers that're straight out of a Cronenberg movie, but it doesn't have that oooooh that Sauza has.
I hear good things about Cabo Wabo, believe it or not, from friends who otherwise default to Sauza. I haven't tried it myself.
(Then there's mezcal, which isn't tequila -- but tequila is a kind of mezcal, iirc; I have yet to find a brand of mezcal that doesn't have a harsh, almost astringent thing to it, like Dutch gin, making it totally unsuitable for shots -- but I'm told such brands do exist.)

I think I'll pick up a bottle of TG.

Sauza does do a silver tequila, too, come to think of it, and I'm not remembering the name of it offhand ... there's one that's just "Sauza," and I don't recommend it, not because it isn't good but because the better ones are only like a dollar or two more per bottle, and the leap in quality is really noticeable.

This would have been funnier if I'd said "waiting in line to use the blender is too much work, way too queue cumbersome." Y'all would've laughed like kittens.

Fav drink for a long night ahead where I don't want to wear out the bartender with intricate drinks and I don't want a hangover the next morning: Vodka Cranberry
Guilty Pleasure: Glass of Goodness (Midori, pineapple juice, cointreau)
Other favorites: Sauza for sipping or shooting, ginger and whiskey, salty dog, toasted almond

Lordy, I was in the middle of opening a wine bottle when the phone rang, and then after that I was distracted by the internet. THANK YOU ILE FOR REMINDING ME OF WHAT I'M SUPPOSED TO BE DOING!
― Beth Parker, Sunday, 26 April 2009 01:37 (sixteen years ago)
Usually my go-to drink is a martini, with about a cap-full of vermouth, vigorously shaken so that there is a thin layer of ice shards on top. Lately I've been alternating between Hendrick's Gin and Tito's vodka.
However, tonight's drink is probably going to be a margarita on the rocks. I've a bottle of Cazadores silver that is calling my name.

Why do those wine-bottle openers with the two flat blades, one longer than the other, exist in the world?
― Beth Parker, Sunday, 26 April 2009 02:01 (sixteen years ago)
Those are wine openers? I always wondered.
― Full Metal Slanket (Oilyrags), Sunday, 26 April 2009 02:10 (sixteen years ago)
Beth, those two-bladed openers are designed for people who love to solve puzzles, the more difficult, the better. They also are effective at preventing drunks from opening another bottle of wine to drink.

― Eugenecist Levy (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 26 April 2009 02:38 (sixteen years ago)
I always find that bloody lips spoil the taste, but I guess it wouldn't affect the alcoholic content, so it's a fair enough strategy.

Our son gave us a rechargeable battery-operated corkscrew for Christmas 2007. We disapproved, of course, and then grew totally enamored of it. It's not in its cradle. Hiding. I found a regular one.
You can aways shove the cork down into the bottle.
