clicking the options here won't change your layout, btw. (yeah, I did it too, already. and I was the one who started this poll. tsk.)

StanM, Wednesday, 10 September 2008 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

Old.css, because I'm a reactionary foo(bar).
Any chance the page could have some "your vote has been hugged" message once you've hit vote? (Not a separate intermediary page obv, since that would likely be annoying)

ILX being down made me recognize that I have a sad tendency to click that ILX bookmark completely automatically whenever I'm slightly bored.

naus, Friday, 12 September 2008 05:07 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, take a wild guess which one I prefer.

I never used old.css, even when it was default.css. Or if I did I changed my browser default fonts so I wouldn't have to look at Times New Roman all day. To me it feels like driving into the wrong part of town.

Old.css EASILY. Agreed that it should be the default - it is what ILX looks like, all others are local variants that should be granted religious freedom but are by no means legitimate pretenders to the throne.

old.css, but keith.css looks pretty readable

gabbneb, Sunday, 14 September 2008 19:11 (sixteen years ago)

keith.css, easy. With the upgrade, I went thru and tested all the stylesheets just to remind myself and see what was new, and keith.css is still the most readable: Posts are differentiated by non-obnoxiously colored boxes, margins are healthy (I can't believe how many of the ILX stylesheet makers just don't get this), and the alignment is reasonable. It's not innovative or anything, but that's not really the point.

What could be improved: post divs should be white, so's to best blend with random pic pastes.

Convert your pencil into a large pole (caek), Sunday, 14 September 2008 23:34 (sixteen years ago)

The problem with the fact that you can count on only about 10 fonts existing on all computers is that they're all pretty well shopworn by now. E.g., there are (to my knowledge) 4 sans-serif fonts you can count on being available to any graphical web-display device:

  • Arial
  • Verdana
  • Trebuchet MS
  • Lucida Sans
Only Arial and Lucida Sans are "guaranteed" Unicode -- ILX is UTF-8 -- and only Trebuchet MS isn't entirely stale to my eyes. A better way to handle fonts in CSS styles is to describe them abstractly: serif, sans-serif, monospace, etc., and let the user himself judge how tiresome these 4 fonts have become to him by allowing him the freedom to change them in his prefs. Sure, you'll wind up with Times New Roman doing work on computers where it should be Georgia, but if the user doesn't notice it, why should the web designer care?

xp to libcrypt. Sure, I realize all too well that typographical options on the web are limited, Times sucks, Verdana is a screen font, the Typography unit at Microsoft is surprisingly sophisticated and well-funded for a company with such poor corporate taste, Eric Gill slept with his daughter and his dog, etc., etc., but I still hate Verdana.

Does old.css's win tell us something about some vague inherent conservatism or fear/dislike of change? Or is it simply the most useable/readable one of the bunch? Do new members also pick old.css when they experiment with their preferences?

a Gioconda kinda dirty look (kenan), Saturday, 11 July 2009 13:44 (fifteen years ago)

I like the dark one. Bookmarks are a bit bust, though: the list of updated ones appears unstyled, and the two bookmarking messages "Message Bookmarked" and "Bookmark Removed" are always visible at the top of the main frame.

stet, Saturday, 11 July 2009 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

I noticed that myself. There was a "display:hidden" that I accidentally stripped out. And the bookmarks list just needs a style. I will fix.

Thanks!

Testing, ignore this post.

a Gioconda kinda dirty look (kenan), Saturday, 11 July 2009 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

Fixes to Kenan's stylesheets have been made and are now live.

Keith, Saturday, 11 July 2009 23:49 (fifteen years ago)

Kenan, made a minor change to yours to just make the site admin message show the same as bookmarks... Assumed that's what you'd want, but let me know if not. It's a bit of a problem all these styles that don't often show on the site.

Keith, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

No, perfect. Thanks! Obv I don't see the admin menu. I just save a copy of each kind of page out of Firefox and style them.

a Gioconda kinda dirty look (kenan), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah the admin menu looks fine, I checked... Mainly because these pages are just made up of much the same stuff as everything else.

Keith, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

(but with added pure evil, obviously)

Keith, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

i have to tell you that i really like this "kenan dark"

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Thursday, 16 July 2009 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

Kenan's already dark enough for me.

one month passes...

Did a stylesheet disappear or something? My ILX suddenly looks different and going through all the available stylesheets, none of them are quite what I had before.

Or am I seriously going mad?

krakow, Monday, 14 September 2009 21:20 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, kenan's dark version is spiffy. It's a brave new world for me.

krakow, Monday, 14 September 2009 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

:) :)

or have I become completely absurd? (kenan), Monday, 14 September 2009 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

is there anything that looks like "old" that's actually better?

this is very pretty.

Yeah, I may grow to like this more than the old style. Definitely more attractive than what we've had for the last two months.

I DONT LIKE CHANGE

bnw, Friday, 2 March 2012 14:47 (thirteen years ago)

just changed mine to

keith.css: Original ILX2 Stylesheet. Highlights DIVs

which i think is the most similar to the one i was using before.

I FEAR CHANGE.

i am all about caek.css nowadays

Mo Money Mo Johnston (Noodle Vague), Friday, 2 March 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

I find keith.css to be very functional. It doesn't get all up in my face, but it provides enough color and contrast it doesn't sink into dead uniformity.

Aimless, Friday, 2 March 2012 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

now it's the one it says "caek's stylesheet" -- is that the same as old.css?

the times new roman, and the white

it's really just the best thing i've ever seen

surm, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 07:17 (thirteen years ago)

it's old.css but it doesn't shrink down big images

caek, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 11:55 (thirteen years ago)

i use new.css now, but i wish it wasn't fully justified (minor point) and didn't scale images

like what is the possible logic behind this?

max-width:60%;
max-height:800px;

can someone make a new.css stylesheet that doesn't resize images? that would be perfect

Many thanks to whoever created standard-dark.css - my first stylesheet change in at least ten years!

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 10 December 2019 22:34 (five years ago)

Yeah I use standard-dark, very nice.

Ste, Thursday, 12 December 2019 13:57 (five years ago)

the only issue I have with it though is it doesn't appear to have the "Unread Posts" label

Ste, Friday, 13 December 2019 08:27 (five years ago)

which one do you mean? (the label)

stet, Friday, 13 December 2019 16:53 (five years ago)

black.css for life!!

brimstead, Friday, 13 December 2019 21:19 (five years ago)

I switched over to standard-dark a while back and it's been a good change, very easy to read.

My only gripe is with reading quote blocks on my phone. It formats them extremely narrow, so you only get a couple words per line.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 14 December 2019 05:31 (five years ago)

Aww, crap. It looks like naus.css is broken because imageshack.us sold out. Any chance I could host that penguin .gif on the ilxor servers and amend the css to preserve that Aja/Dante legacy forever? It's not like anybody's ever going to use it.

john shopkins (naus), Saturday, 14 December 2019 07:59 (five years ago)

Yeah - send it to stet @ ilxor dot com pls!
