I just did something interesting - I used Google Scholar (admittedly an uppity elitist institution) to search for national and international policy statements and original publications authored by Obama, Biden, McCain, and Palin. Guess who has the most? Guess who has the fewest? Guess who has NONE ! If you guessed that the order of appearance of these names in my list is the actual order of original, self-authored publications WITH IDEAS IN THEM, you'd be correct. Wake up, America. Love, Mom

I was worried my mom would buy into Palin's schtick - she's lived most of her life in rural-ass Michigan, which is basically Alaska Jr. She surprised me and called her out for being a shallow out-of-her-league hypocrite. She also mentioned how she knows tons of women like her (there are literally hundreds of hockey moms around) and she sure as hell doesn't want them running anything. Topping it off was her opinion that if McCain wins it will finally prove her theory that everyone is stupid.
Thanks mom!

I think my mom was feeling pro-McCain/Palin right after the nomination, but I don't know if she's learned more since that would change her mind. Sometimes I'm really amazed that two literate, connected people with internet and cable and educations and OPTIONS are so uninformed. It's not that they're stupid, it's just that they don't know anything.

As you may know, she choseNOT to abort her youngest baby (now 4 months old) when she found out it hadDowns. Here's the story
She was flown down to give a speech at a Republican energy conference in Texasthis Spring. Before the meeting she approached one of the organizers and saidshe needed to fly back right after the meeting. She gave her speech, then flewback. They found out later that she realized she was going into premature labor.
Now, let me just ask you, if you thought you were going into premature labor(the baby was months early) and you really cared about that baby, would you givea speech and then fly all the way to Alaska or would you, perhaps, find thenearest hospital? And, furthermore, should anyone (male or female) with a 4month old, special needs baby, be on the road campaigning 24-7?
Sarah Barracuda (her high school nickname) indeed!

Subj: Putting Alaska on notice
To everyone I know:Regardless of who you are planning to vote for, please read this email I received from a good friend. Please share this with as many people as possible.
This is from a Bryn Mawr college grad to her fellow alums
Dear classmates -As an Alaskan, I am writing to give all of you some information on Sarah Palin, Senator McCain's choice for VP. As an Alaska voter, I know more than most of you about her and, frankly, I am horrified that he picked her.
The most accurate description of her is red neck. Her husband works in the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay and races sno w mobiles. She is a life time member of the NRA and has worked tirelessly to allow indiscriminate hunting of wildlife in Alaska , particularly wolves and bears. She has spent millions of Alaska state dollars on aerial hunting of these predators from helicopters and airplanes, dollars that should have been spent, for example, on Alaska 's failing school system. We have the lowest rate of high school graduation in the country. Not all of you may think aerial predator hunting is so bad, but how anyone (other than Alaska wolf-haters, of which there are 20 many, most without teeth), could think this use of funds is appropriate is beyond me. If you want to know more about the aerial hunting travesty, let me know and I will send some links to informative web sites.
She has been a strong supporter of increased use of fossil fuels, yet the McCain campaign has the nerve to say she has 'green' policies. The only thing green about Sarah Palin is her lack of experience. She has consistently supported drilling in ANWR, use of coal-burning power plants (as I write this, a new coal plant is being built in her home town of Wasilla ), strip mining, and almost anything else that will unnecessarily exploit the diminishing resources of Alaska and destroy its environment.
Prior to her one year as governor of Alaska , she was mayor of Wasilla, a small red neck town outside Anchorage. The average maximum education level of parents of junior high school kids in Wasilla is 10th grade. Unfortunately, I ha ve to go to Wasilla every week to get groceries and other supplies, so I have continual contact with the people who put Palin in office in the first place. I know what I'm talking about.
These people don't have a concept of the world around them or of the serious issues facing the US . Furthermore, they don't care. So long as they can go out and hunt their moose every fall, kill wolves and bears and drive their snow mobiles and ATVs through every corner of the wilderness, they're happy. I wish I were exaggerating.
0ASarah Palin is currently involved in a political corruption scandal. She fired an individual in law enforcement here because she didn't like how he treated one of her relatives during a divorce. The man's performance and ability weren't considered; it was a totally personal firing and is currently under investigation. While the issue isn't close to the scandal of Ted Steven's corruption, it shows that Palin isn't 'squeaky clean' and causes me to think there may be more issues that could come to light. Clearly McCain doesn't care.
When you line Palin up with Biden, the comparison would be laughable if it weren't so serious. Sarah Palin knows nothing of economics (admittedly a weak area for McCain), or of international affairs, knows nothing of national government, Social Security, unemployment, health care systems - you name it. The idea of her meeting with heads of foreign governments around the world truly frightens me. In an increasingly danger ous world, with the economy in shambles in the US , Sarah Palin is uniquely UNqualified to be vice president. John McCain is not a young man. Should something happen to him such that the vice president had to step in, it would destroy our country and possibly the world to have someone as inexperienced and inappropriate as Sarah Palin. The choice of Palin is a cheap shot by McCain to try to get Hillary supporters to vote for him. when McCain introduced her today, Palin had the nerve to compare herself with Hillary and Geraldine Ferraro. Sarah Palin, you are no Hillary Clinton.
To those of you who, like me, supported Hillary and were upset that she did not get the nomination, please don't think that Sarah Palin is a worthy substitute. If you supported Hillary, regardless of what you think the media and the democratic party may have done to undermine her campaign, the person to support now is Obama, not Sarah Palin. To those of you who are independent or undecided, don't let the choice of Palin sway you in favor of McCain. Choosing her shows how unqualified McCain is to be president. To those of you who are conservative, I guess you have no choice for president. But please try to see how the poor choice of Palin tells us a great deal about McCain's judgment. While the political posturing inherent in the choice of Palin is obvious, the more serious issue is the fact that the VP is, literally, a heartbeat away from the presidency. Sar ah Palin is totally and unequivocally unqualified to be vice president, let alone president.
I know this is a lengthy and emotional email, but the stakes are high. I thought it might help for all of you, regardless of political affiliation, to know something about Palin from someone who has to live with her administration in Alaska on a daily basis.
Here's some basic background from MoveOn.org:
* She was elected Alaska 's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previo us office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage.1* Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2* She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3* Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4* She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.5* She's solidly in line with John McCain's 'Big Oil first' energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.6
Here's a sample of Alaskan's responses:
She is really just a mayor from a small town outside Anchorage who has been a governor for only 1.5 years, and has ZERO national and international experience. I shudder to think that she could be the person taking that 3AM call on the White House hotline, and the one who could potentially be charged with leading the US in the volatile international scene that exists today. —Rose M., Fairbanks , AK
She is VERY, VERY conservative, and far from perfect. She's a hunter and fisherwoman, but votes against the environment again and again. She ran on ethics reform, but is currently under investigation for several charges involving hiring and firing of state officials. She has NO experience beyond Alaska . —Christine B., Denali Park , AK
As an Alaskan and a feminist, I am beyond words at this announcement. Palin is not a feminist, and she is not the reformer she claims to be. —Karen L., Anchorage , AK
Alaskans, collectively, are just as stunned as the rest of the nation. She is doing well running our State, but is totally inexperienced on the national level, and very much unequipped to run the nation, if it came to that. She is as far right as one can get, which has already been communicated on the news. In our office of thirty employees (dems, republicans, and nonpartisans), not one person feels she is ready for the V.P. position.—Sherry C., Anchorage , AK
She's vehemently anti-choice and doesn't care about protecting our natural resources, even though she has worked as a fisherman. McCain chose her to pick up the Hillary voters, but Palin is no Hillary. —Marina L., Juneau , AK
I think she's far too inexperience d to be in this position. I'm all for a woman in the White House, but not one who hasn't done anything to deserve it. There are far many other women who have worked their way up and have much more experience that would have been better choices. This is a patronizing decision on John McCain's part- and insulting to females everywhere that he would assume he'll get our vote by putting 'A Woman' in that position.—Jennifer M., Anchorage, AK
Please forward this to everyone you know!

these are exactly my feelings on palin, i'm still v much in LOL PALIN mode and even though i kind of *know* she's reprehensible in many ways, i definitely want her to stick around in the public eye just to entertain me. lack of desperate housewives-esque revelations this week is disappointing though. really, i've just been very impressed with her so far, and i cringe every time i see a dem-sympathiser be dismissive of her. or gross and sexist which brings me to:

I'm starting to be kind of with Lex on this one.
I find her beliefs and politics as apalling as the next former blue stater. However the reek of sexism behind the brutal slapdowns quite worries me, too.
― Our Friend The Atom (Masonic Boom), Friday, 12 September 2008 09:08 (sixteen years ago)
it's bemusing. like, you can't think of anything else to criticise her about?! also, i don't know what to make of the fact the wonkette commenters seem to be a ton more sexist and stupid than defamer commenters.

― lex pretend, Friday, 12 September 2008 09:34 (sixteen years ago)
i mean i'm not denying her image is a huge huge factor but it's the whole package, and reducing it to her looks and sex appeal is retarded
― lex pretend, Friday, 12 September 2008 09:35 (sixteen years ago)
It cuts both ways though, you can attack her on her views, opinions and experience and get slated for picking on the poor defenceless woman. Which already seems to be shaping up as the VP debate strategy.
― Drinking Island is inside every one of us (Ed), Friday, 12 September 2008 09:36 (sixteen years ago)
That wasn't what I was saying, was it? If you think that a certain cynicism about women and their appearance wasn't at least a partial motivation for the people that selected her to run I think yr kidding yrself tho.
― The Real Slim Whitman (Noodle Vague), Friday, 12 September 2008 09:36 (sixteen years ago)
That's so depressing on so many levels.
Someone said above, that they thought public/media interest in Palin would wane once her basic idiocy was discovered. To which I thought about saying "When has basic idocy ever harmed the popularity of a physically attractive woman? If anything, it helps it."
But thought that was far too sexist and horrible a thing to say. Except I suspect that American society really is that sexist and horrible.
This is the problem with Democracy - how to stop it from turning into a simple popularity contest, rather than a contest of philosophical soundness or leadership skils.
x-post - it *IS* retarded. But people (women as well as men unfortunately) DO think about women mainly in those incredibly stupid and reductionist terms.

And whilst I agree that there's plenty of misogyny in the responses to Palin, you're overlooking the fact that appearance is an integral part of political "debate" and has been for years, unless I've imagined all the "lol McCain you old" stuff.

also, obama's image (whole package inc sex appeal) has also been a huge factor in his own campaign, in almost exactly the same way as palin's. but you don't find people criticising him for having the sex appeal of a gorse bush ffs
― lex pretend, Friday, 12 September 2008 09:40 (sixteen years ago)
well, this is why she's a savvy choice innit. but a good campaign should certainly be able to find a way to criticise her without leaving themselves open to this.

My mom, who thinks she is "a doll", liked her snark line about the merits of McCain's career working for change rather than Obama's harnessing change for a career - never mind that Palin didn't even write it. She also points out that she's VERY attractive to a certain kind of man who leans R in elections, so the idea that she's there to mess with the Hillary demographic is only half of the story. My mom is also insane mad angry about Obama/Ayres though we haven't spoken since Billobama. She still claims to be an undecided voter and any thing could happen; she was unimpressed by blogs going after Trigbaby although she will not take seriously her religious views' impact on future governance if elected. She trusts the public too much.
With the other side of her mouth she complains that nobody's getting issues out there, after she's spent 30 transatlantic minutes going on about Michelle Obama's shortcomings as a human being. Haven't heard any of that since the DNC though.

this is literally impossible methinks, particularly when the side that nominated her is already as sexist as possible and will look for every opportunity to portray any attack against her, no matter how substantive, as sexist (see newest McCain ad making the spurious claim that Obama/Biden have criticized Palin for being "good looking")

Completely true! And with the added advantage of being funny. Doesn't strike me as unpleasantly sexist in any way that Palin hasn't put on the table herself -- like issuing a press release about the details of her daughter's pregnancy and how they're going to make her -- oops, I mean, Bristol WANTS TO -- marry the teenaged father...and then lambasting the press for addressing the details of the press release that SHE PUT OUT THERE.

My mum spent about 5 minutes on the phone yesterday ranting about how dreadful she is. Mainly because she wants to repeal the Law of Evolution, but also the anti-abortion stuff.
But then she really worried me by turning around and announcing that she "doesn't trust" Obama, though she can't provide any actual substantiation for that beyond kneejerk racism. (It makes me really sad how my mum seems to be drifting towards racism in old age, makes me wonder if nurture really does outweigh nature, and if she will ever really escape her South African upbringing, despite going to great lengths to actively deny it for so long.)
She said, if she could vote, she would vote for Obama as the lesser evil.
She then started talking about how every American black she has ever known has ultimately revealed that they "live two lives" (I know this is getting to be third hand hearsay, so I'm possibly misquoting my mum misquoting her friends.) I said, isn't that true of any historically oppressed ethnicity? Catholics, recusants, Jews, etc. She says no, this is somehow "different."
Don't get me wrong, I'm not slagging off my mother. But it does give me great pause when this liberal, left-wing woman starts saying things like this. :-(

Has anyone else's mother forwarded them the viral email and photos of the anti-Palin rally in AK? Got it from my mum today, so wondering if was doing the rounds.
There's some great pics of "Hockey Mamas for Obama" and the like.
Subject: Pics of Biggest Rally in AK history... anti-Palin Psssst...pass it on!
The Alaska Women Reject Palin rally was to be held outside on the lawn in front of the Loussac Library in midtown Anchorage . Home made signs were encouraged, and the idea was to make a statement that Sarah Palin does not speak for all Alaska women, or men. I had no idea what to expect.
The rally was organized by a small group of women, talking over coffee. It made me wonder what other things have started with small groups of women talking over coffee. It's probably an impressive list. These women hatched the plan, printed up flyers, posted them around town, and sent notices to local media outlets. One of those media outlets was KBYR radio, home of Eddie Burke, a long-time uber-conservative Anchorage talk show host. Turns out that Eddie Burke not only announced the rally, but called the people who planned to attend the rally 'a bunch of socialist baby-killing maggots,' and read the home phone numbers of the organizers aloud over the air, urging listeners to call and tell them what they thought. The women, of course, received some nasty, harassing and threatening messages.
I felt a bit apprehensive. I'd been disappointed before by the turnout at other rallies. Basically, in Anchorage , if you can get 25 people to show up at an event, it's a success. So, I thought to myself, if we can actually get 100 people there that aren't sent by Eddie Burke, we'll be doing good. A real statement will have been made. I confess, I still had a mental image of 15 demonstrators surrounded by hundreds of menacing 'socialist baby-killing maggot' haters.
It's a good thing I wasn't tailgating when I saw the crowd in front of the library or I would have ended up in somebody's trunk. When I got there, about 20 minutes early, the line of sign wavers stretched the full length of the library grounds, along the edge of the road, 6 or 7 people deep! I could hardly find a place to park. I nabbed one of the last spots in the library lot, and as I got out of the car and started walking, people seemed to join in from every direction, carrying signs.
Never, have I seen anything like it in my 17 and a half years living in Anchorage. The organizers had someone walk the rally with a counter, and they clicked off well over 1400 people (not including the 90 counter-demonstrators). This was the biggest political rally ever, in the history of the state. I was absolutely stunned. The second most amazing thing is how many people honked and gave the thumbs up as they drove by. And even those that didn't honk looked wide-eyed and awe-struck at the huge crowd that was growing by the minute. This just doesn't happen here.
Then, the infamous Eddie Burke showed up. He tried to talk to the media, and was instantly surrounded by a group of 20 people who started shouting O-BA-MA so loud he couldn't be heard. Then passing cars started honking in a rhythmic pattern of 3, like the Obama chant, while the crowd cheered, hooted and waved their signs high.
So, if you've been doing the math… Yes. The Alaska Women Reject Palin rally was significantly bigger than Palin's rally that got all the national media coverage! So take heart, sit back, and enjoy the photo gallery. Feel free to spread the pictures around to anyone who needs to know that Sarah Palin most definitely does not speak for all Alaskans. The citizens of Alaska , who know her best, have things to say.
A bunch of pictures of that rally:

My mom just sent me a little rant. About how her friend from church was all "Palin, that's my girl!" and she said, "Oh, so you're in favor of girls dying in back alley abortions?" Which is true enough, but isn't going to change too many minds I think. I suggested that next time she go with the rape kit angle.

My mom has a lot to say about Sarah Palin, pretty much all of it negative. To continue on the theme of the last post, she says, "Palin is saying she's so proud of her daughter for choosing life...so she had a choice, but if Palin has her way nobody else will! It's personal for her family, but has to be legislated for everyone else!" And she can't stop quoting stupid things Palin said and talking about this SNL skit about Palin & HRC that she really liked. (I was away from English media between early August and yesterday, so my mom's opinion is ALL I've heard on this topic so far.)

But other factors trump those issues, she says, naming Obama's inexperience, Clinton's treatment by her party and the media, and the Democrats' failure to choose a female running mate.
The issue that has most of Long's friends recoiling in abject horror from her decision is abortion. Long calls herself unwaveringly "pro-choice." But, she says, "as long as we let that determine our votes, we are hostages to the Democrats...from the article about Tom's landlady. I can't disagree with the last sentence, since being single-issue about abortion is what keeps a lot of people stuck to the Republicans against their better interests. But seriously, this lady sounds like an asshole who thinks gender trumps all other issues, which is even worse to be single issue about when I don't think that choosing Palin necessarily does much more than saying "a woman can be vice president."

Fey shrugged off her resemblance to Gov. Sarah Palin, whom she won raves for portraying on the season premiere of NBC's "Saturday Night Live."
"But then my kid saw her on TV and said, `That's Mommy!'" she said.
She was more open about her thoughts on reprising the "SNL" role. As in, she'd prefer not to.
"I want to be done playing this lady Nov. 5," she said. "So if anybody can help me be done playing this lady Nov. 5, that would be good for me."

there really aren't any lefty conspiracies this year, are there? I guess the big one was that Trig was Palin's grandson. But compared to Obama is a Muslim/Michelle's whitey tape/etc it's fairly toothless.

my vaguely right of center stepmom gets apoplectic when Palin comes up in conversation. it's weird to see a woman who never gets mad start into a rage. "that baby. how could she just leave the baby? pay it no attention? i can't believe it!" etc. etc.
― a.q. con (jergins), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 01:52 (sixteen years ago)
I have met some left of center women who say it too, although they say it in a whisper, like "I hate to say this, but I'm worried about how she's going to take care of her kids".

My mom's a feminist Dem but it turns out she's pretty old fashioned, because she told me, "I just don't think feminism is about being just like men. I think you have to respect that women are different than men," and specifically goes onto explain that that implies taking maternity leave, supporting it for other women as well as paternity leave for men if you're a manager or lawmaker, and not running for VP when you're still at a time of your life in which you're giving birth. I agree with her on part about supporting maternity and paternity leave, but was surprised and not very happy to hear her actually say Palin's choices are inappropriate. (To be fair, though, she is coming at it from the perspective of a mother who quit her job a few months ago mainly because her disabled kid needed more help.)

Calling on Team Sarah Members to uphold the dignity of our communityPosted by Emily (TS Mod) on December 22, 2008 at 2:30pmView Emily (TS Mod)'s blog
As many of you know, Team Sarah is a project of the Susan B. Anthony List, an organization founded in 1992 and named after the suffragette who fought for women's rights and against slavery. Susan B. Anthony possessed the core values and convictions that embraced all human rights and human dignity.
She stood up for rights for slaves, women, and unborn children. She lived out her values consistently, as does Sarah Palin.
She lived with backbone and determination and confidence. So does Sarah Palin.
And so does Team Sarah.
Susan B. Anthony never backed down from her fight, and even though she died before she saw women's suffrage, she never wavered. When you see Governor Palin's unblinking, confident, firm-jawed statements about protecting the unborn, children with special needs and women around the world, you can witness the same compassionate spirit that Susan B. Anthony had.

What a beautiful family those Palins! I highly recommend this calendar to anyone who loves Sarah. To those non-supporters, you would enjoy the calendar for its picturesque shots of the great outdoors.”
“To those big libs who is fortunate to have the calendar , hold on to it , Remember her Kawasaki eyeglass ? You will be lucky if you can buy it for a thousand . I can’t understand why big lib goes apoplyctic and berserk with Sarah Palin . You need to examine your heads…You critisized everything she does including clothes… I have no problem sending campaign money for her dress allowance and she should be allowed to keep it too. Sarah Palin is our star and beautiful and the lib can’t stand it…In reality , she is a woman of modest means and if she can improve her situation then more power to her…I say to all libs- MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR. let’s live in peaceful co-existence.”

http://liveoffensively.com/images/equipment/ts/TSGC01_01_lg.jpgFront:God is not a Conservative Republican
Back:And He is Definitely not a Liberal Democrat
Everyone would like to think God is on the side of their own political party. They believe God would vote the way they do. God is neither Republican nor Democrat.
We should remember the attitude of Donald Miller in Blue Like Jazz, "I didn't think that Jesus agreed with a lot of the policies of the Republican Party, or for that matter, the Democratic party. Jesus was a religious figure, not a political figure."
As long as both parties are not God's chosen representatives, Christians from both political parties Should discuss their disagreements instead of just reacting to each other's ideas. The issues our nation is facing at this time are vital to the health and well being of each one of us as Americans. We need to be looking at where the Bible does stand on the issues that face our nation. We need to be involved in the political process that elects those who we feel will best represent our beliefs as Christians.
Let this t-shirt open up the door for thoughtful discussion, not just biased quarrels. But, while God does not favor one party over another, Live Offensively finds it more difficult to understand how any Christian can support a person who openly endorses a holocaust. The democratic platform today supports abortion rights. That is why the back of our t-shirt says "definitely not a liberal democrat." If a person finds no value in human life before a human is born, why would they find value in human life after? How can I trust a politician to be interested in the education of our children, if he isn't even interested in protecting them from death before birth.
At the same time there are many republicans who are terrible at loving people. Lou Engle said at the call "I am not a republican I am a Christian. I belong to a government above this government…The Church is going to need to start to lead the way in not only protests but adoption, foster care, and caring for the mothers."
In summary, "Christian" is not, and never will be synonymous for conservative republicans and is definitely not synonymous with liberal democrats. We agree with James Dobson when he said "For the rest of my life, I will never cast one vote for one man or woman would kill one baby." If we are going to transform a nation we must pray and vote to end the shedding of innocent blood.

NEW YORK — Former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is still mad at media coverage of her candidacy, particularly "anonymous, pathetic bloggers" who she says spread falsehoods about her.
The Alaska governor also says she's addicted to Carmex lip balm, grew up playing flute and trombone, and says sports taught her everything she knows. She shared those and other insights in the March issue of Esquire magazine, scheduled to hit newsstands Feb. 16.
In the interview, Palin, who rocketed to fame as John McCain's running mate in last year's election, reiterated her complaints about media coverage of the campaign. She said reporters continue to question whether her 9-month-old son, Trig, is actually the child of her 18-year old daughter Bristol from a secret previous pregnancy.
"I'll tell you, yesterday the Anchorage Daily News, they called again to ask - double-, triple-, quadruple-check - who is Trig's real mom," Palin told Esquire. "And I thought, 'Okay, more indication of continued problems in the world of journalism.'"
Rumors that Bristol was Trig's mother swirled on the Internet shortly after McCain chose Palin as his running mate. But the mainstream media did not report the story until the McCain campaign announced that Bristol was pregnant, in part to tamp down the rumors about Trig. Bristol delivered a baby boy in December.
In the interview, Palin also reiterated her wish that she had had more input on strategy during the campaign.
"If I were giving advice to myself back on the day my candidacy was announced, I'd say, 'Tell the campaign that you'll be callin' some of the shots. Don't just assume that they know you well enough to make all your decisions for ya," Palin said.
On other topics, Palin said she hunts and goes fishing to provide "good clean healthy protein" for her family. Mooseburger is the secret to a good chili recipe, she said.
"I don't know if you can get it commercially in New York," Palin said. "Come up here to my home, and I'll prepare it for ya."
Palin said she named Bristol in part for Bristol, Conn. - home of the sports network ESPN.
"When I was in high school, my desire was to be a sportscaster," she said. "Until I learned that you'd have to move to Bristol, Connecticut. It was far away. So instead, I had a daughter and named her Bristol."
I'd highlight a quote, but nothing really stands out. It's all unbelievable and perplexing as it always has been.

Oh the sorrow:
Campaign Solutions, a Republican consulting firm advising Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's political action committee, has parted ways with the former Republican vice presidential nominee. The group had been working with the Palin operation to raise money for SarahPAC but decided to step aside after a series of strategic and philosophic differences, according to a source familiar with the decision.A spokeswoman for Palin did not immediately return an email seeking comment....The parting of ways between Palin and Campaign Solutions is the latest sign of a divide between the governor's official Alaska staff and those advising her on the national level. Palin has struggled badly to balance those competing interests; she recently agreed to and then canceled an appearance at a fundraiser to benefit the Republican House and Senate campaign committees. The news of the latest problem in Palin's political world comes on the same day that the Alaska governor announced the formation of the Alaska Fund Trust, an official legal fund designed to "defend the integrity of the Alaska Governor's Office from an onslaught of political attacks launched against current Governor Sarah Palin, the First Family, and state-employed colleagues," according to a mission statement on the organization's Web site.It also comes less than 24 hours after Levi Johnston, the former fiancee of her daughter, Bristol, appeared on CNN's "Larry King Live" to discuss his relationship with the Palins.

During the election my mom was convinced that Palin was picked by some strategist that had also watched this British dramatic mini-series she had seen about some random middle-class lady who rises to power as a Conservative because she's "just like one of us." One of mom's close friends really liked Palin for that reason. She reminded my mom of that friend's daughter, who is charming and plucky and a good real estate agent, but that my mother did not think should be a political leader.

I had missed this:
One of Mrs Palin’s constant refrains when asked about giving up her office is that she didn’t want to practise “politics as usual”. Well, she can certainly be acquitted of that. And there is nothing wrong with unusual in politics from time to time. But for a party that seeks to govern to speak so openly of its dislike of governing, of the people who govern and of the place from which they govern, isn’t entirely serious.Mrs Palin need not worry too much about this, because she has worked out that she can have an entire career, a public voice and a good income entirely by pleasing the Republican base. More broadly, her party has concluded that it can have a fine life just pleasing itself. The maths of politics aren’t very complicated. If you want to win and you don’t have enough votes from people who agree with you, you have to win support from people who don’t by accommodating their views. You cannot win elections by getting the same people to vote for you by pulling the lever harder. This, however, is the strategy the Republicans seem to be embarking upon.
