My cat will kick your cat's ass.

DG, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My cat's breath smells of cat food.

nickn, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

thats kinda good news, duane. how long does she come out for, and does she come out for things other than food? does she go into the house?

di, Wednesday, 17 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I miss Duckling's cat, who is (I like to think) pining without me. Di I am in Chch now but Im sick, so all I've seen is my aunties spare bedroom.

di, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hank and Dolly have now both, ahem, "had their pockets picked" and have progressed to going IN THE GARDEN!! they love the garden and have found all sorts of fragrant hideyholes in the herb garden. Hank is a mentalist but Dolly is a lot more reserved (i think she's kept down a bit by her boisterous brother) and if Dolly gives you a cuddle you are truly a privileged being.

katie, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At one point in Disney's 'That Darn Cat!' (which I watched the other w/end) Hayley Mills wears black-framed glasses and a bright red coat and she looks just like Enid in 'Ghost World'! Really!

Andrew L, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My cat Tiffy, is coming up to 14...she's doing fine...she only eats the select cuts/Sheba high-class cat food these days. She's lost a few teeth these past few years!

jel --, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

kitten bonsai!

geeta, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Our cat is at my mother-in-law's in Vienna (we're just back from a 2 week holiday). Like all grandmother's, she has always believed that our boy was a little angel and that we were lousy parents -- however, a few weeks of being awakened at 5am by a vicious bite to the nose have rid her of THAT idea.

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned -- I too am allergic to cats. Exposure seems to have made me much less so.

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my cat has a dust allergy

squea, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Colin and Ned, let me join you. I think I would like cats if I was able to actually go near them. I was all set up to stay with some lovely friends in a lovely apartment in NYC until they told me they have three (count 'em) cats. Sigh.

Mark C, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

One of my cats is very large and rotund. She will kick all of your asses. She likes to eat grass from the back yard and then throw it up somwhere where we will step on it. She likes to eat ice and is 12 yrs old.

My other cat is also large but his weight hangs in a floppy way from his belly. He is solid white and is scared of strangers. He likes catnip, sunny days and hissing at the dog. He is seven years old and will hide from you.

Samantha, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My cat came back, the very next day.

(I've never been allowed pets)

Graham, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

WHat about your hair? Surely that's a pet?

Pete, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's raining in the Heath today, and my cat got all wet and left muddy pawprints all round the house.

(is that twee enough for you?)

DG, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"in the Heath" is a strangely evocative phrase

mark s, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Geeta, I always love it when a link to Bonsai Kitty pops up.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan where is the scary flashing eyes kitty?

mark s, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My mum is trying to get me & my mates to go to her house for the weekend to look after the cat when they are away. Our cat is nearly 15, she is a black & white half Siamese half tabby with yellow eyes and notches in her ears from fighting when younger. Now she is the biggest wuss evah and sits either looking through her cat flap cowering as other cats run around the garden or on top of the boiler watching as other cats eat her dinner. Her name is Portia. Don't laugh it is a very good name for a cat.

Emma, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, maybe, though if it is I'd also have to count Lixi the TigXor, PsyDuck, Pikachu, Bubbles, Shaun and assorted wildlife too twee to mention the names of.

Graham, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Emma that's nothing. Not only do my parents also have a cat called Portia, but her kittens were named Moth, Cobweb, Mustardseed, Peasblossom and... Fluff. There should be a law against this abuse of Shakespeare.

Archel, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had my tatty old chair recovered. Having never sat on it before, my cat decides it is his favourite place in the world and leaves mounds of white hair all over it. He also threw up on it one night, which I guess is the ultimate sign of affection!

Bill, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

let's just say, dan, that i know more about the site than i should - kids crafts page!

geeta, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Casper and Hugo are taking a break from the heatwave by relaxing beneath the ceiling fan.

Andy K, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fritz and Maggie don't like my new dog George.

Chris, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tina is nearly 15. She is very affectionate & tilts the top of her head to touch heads with me. She love to have her head, especially her jaws scratched for hours. Awwwwwww.

Now that she's getting on a bit, when she's happy she dribbles. Loads. I mean like wet patches on your trousers loads. And as she has the stinky catfood breath thing too, that drool doesn't smell too nice.

But I still love her.

David, Thursday, 18 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...

Kitty is on the porch.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

shit howdy that is huge. i'll try to fix that

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Last night, right before bed, Nick discovered cat puke right UNDER the bed. So he cleaned that up. When he went into the kitchen to throw it away, he found cat droppings on the floor by the trashcan, so he cleaned that up. Then, when he went to crawl back into bed, he found a hairball on the comforter. YUCK!

That's the news and I'm stickin' to it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Euw, maybe I wont get a kitty after all!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlfriend left for the weekend so it's up to me to keep the cat and the retarded potato alive until she gets back.

They slept on her humanless bed last night rather than coming to sleep on my bed, those little bastards. I see how it is.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe you do things in your sleep that you are not aware of!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not always that icky having cats, Pink. My cat Pepper just has, um, problems. She has bulemia or something because she's super skinny. My other kitty, Lucy, however, just binges all the time without the purging.

We have them on Hairball control food right now, but maybe her stomach just can't handle the switch from regular kitty food. I dunno.

Most of the time though she's just a cute cuddle bug. That's right, I said it, a cuddle bug.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe you do things in your sleep that you are not aware of!

Like emanate cat-hating waves?

But when we both sleep in her bed, they can't get enough. Fickle little things.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Phew, buying a cat is back on then! ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The non-retarded cat does help me with my important videogaming work, though.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i just tricked my boy out of the bed, after getting back late from a gig. he thinks i've fed him a super-special third time today, but i have not. he will be disappointed when he reaches the hallway and finds his dish with no fresh treats. but the fucker's nine and a half kilos. this has to STOP. and he needs to stop covering every available surface with his furry dreadlock remnants.

but apart from that, changy's perfect.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

This is my kitty Sindy looking startled as I interrupt her bath:

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

She looks offended.

"How dare you interrupt a lady's toilette?"

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

my cats continue to puke up hairballs, shit and piss in their box, and yell for food. they yell a lot more now that they're getting old. I hope one day soon they loose their voices. they are all still pretty cute though.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Just be happy they're still 'thinking inside the box', kyle.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god my other cat, Skittles is the worst at that (especially yelling for food). He's really starting to piss my mom off.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

of course we all love the little bastard anyway:-)

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

man, I've been wishing for my cat to lose his voice for awhile now. Instead, he lost his hearing. Bastard.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 16 September 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Two identical cats moved in next door to me and they're always beating up my cat and whenever I leave the door open they strut right into my house and jump on the kitchen bench and stuff. They've both got black and white cow spots and are really really huge, and it took me like 3 weeks to realise there were two of them!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Thursday, 16 September 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Last night I went to the loo in the middle of the night, and in the darkness spied a big shape in the bath. I turned on the light, and there was my cat. In the bath. Just sitting there. I've never seen her do this before, but now I'm starting to suspect that she's done it every night for the past seven years - waiting til i've gone to bed then creeping into the bath for the night.

Mog, Friday, 17 September 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I really need to get my digital camera working so I can post pics of my 2 gorgeous kitties. I am at the stage where they should be going out for a bit. I hate it, I'm sooo worried about them.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

They've got to learn the ways of the world, love. House-only cats are a bit sad.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Thursday, 26 July 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

my cat Skittles is not doing well. basically he has mostly been lying in a corner looking very sad and pitiful. not sure if it's the infection (which we've been giving him antibiotics for) or his diabetes. probably the latter. he's not even eating much anymore.

i'm not sure there's much we can do. we don't have the money for a bunch of tests and insulin shots. i'm mentally preparing myself for the inevitable.

latebloomer, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

:(

Sorry to hear this, lb.

Michael White, Thursday, 13 September 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, so sad.

KitCat, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

So sorry, latebloomer :( Our cat Morrie is also on the downhill run. It's bad because his (slightly healthier) brother keeps attacking him. I hope Skittles has some more good days with you.

Jaq, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

thanks. i hope so too.

he looks so miserable, though. i don't think he has much longer. i don't want him to needlessly suffer.

latebloomer, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Aww, poor babycat. I'm sorry to hear it, sug.

luna, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

aw latebloomer's kitty, i'm sorry.

my cat is healthy but lonely during the day. i think i need to get her a friend, but she really hates other cats. there is a stray cat that comes to the window who is v v cuet and looks like a boy version of her, and she makes the loudest, most horrible noises i've ever heard her make (very terrifying cries) and her tail puffs up to the size of a raccoon's!

bell_labs, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

time to taste the rainbow, skittles ;_;

chaki, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

My cat is fucking crazy. Since I cannot play with her all night, she opens cupboards and drawers and throws things around. I feel like I have poltergeists.

(I have another cat, but he is an old man and doesn't understand playing)

Jordan, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

yes. my cat is hysterical and insane and a total needy bitch. she'll cuddle up against my hand purring and 20 seconds later attack it with both claws and vampire teeth. she also does this to my sister and my boyfriend. she's lucky she's cute, hrmph

bell_labs, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

latebloomer, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry to hear about your kitty's health, latebloomer. My cat Cutty Sark is not well, either. She's doing okay for the moment, but it looks like she might have cancer and it's probably not something that can be fixed, even if we scared the hell out of her with tests. I'm also dreading the inevitable.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

i'm sorry:-(

latebloomer, Thursday, 13 September 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks. I'm more worried about the kids' responses than about my own being upset about it. But we've had Cutty Sark since right after we got married, almost 12 years.

If there's an upside, it's that I'm paying more attention to her than before she started seeming unwell. Also, she now gets kitten chow instead of cat food because the vet wants her to try to gain some weight, so she's enjoying "special food." She's really the first house pet I've ever had. Our other cat, Mizu, will also be really upset/confused when she is gone.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 13 September 2007 23:30 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, my mom is not going to take it well. i'm not too worried how my other cat Sindy will respond though. she'll relish the extra attention i'm sure.

latebloomer, Thursday, 13 September 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

That's cool that you're worried about your mom's response. My mother is afraid of cats, so I suspect she'll privately be cheering. It's good to have sincere family empathy and support.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 13 September 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

yeah. i still live at home with my folks so it's going to be like losing a family member.

latebloomer, Thursday, 13 September 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

One of my cats develops diabetes when given certain medicines, like steroids. Last time, I noticed her peeing a lot, so I got a blood sugar meter (about $30), and her blood glucose was above 300 (thankfully, negative ketones). We got some insulin (for free, actually, since they put an incorrect dosage on it, but it would have been about $80), and gave her shots for about a month. Her sugar stabilized and now it's at a normal level, and we haven't given her the insulin for 3 months or so.

The moral of this story: Don't give up on the kitty just 'cause of diabetes. He might get better with just a month of insulin!

libcrypt, Friday, 14 September 2007 06:56 (eighteen years ago)

She dedicated last night to trying to take down my bedroom mirror, or maybe she was just trying to get behind (or INSIDE) it. CIO cat.

bell_labs, Friday, 14 September 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

There is an adorable, fluffy, tiny, starving black kitty that's take to napping on the soft chairs in my backyard. I gave her some leftover chicken yesterday and she was happy. You can feel her hipbones and everything. I've set out some water and dog food (all I have, well, that and timothy hay pellets for the guinea pigs).

KitCat, Friday, 14 September 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I don't think she wants to commit to a kitty of her own. Besides, if a new kitty turns out to be any less sweet and cute than mine, there will be disappointment.

kenan, Friday, 14 September 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

Or let the gf keep the used kitty and get a 2008 model for yourself.

Well, I have a spare, anyway. :)

kenan, Friday, 14 September 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

-- libcrypt, Friday, 14 September 2007 06:56 (9 hours ago) Link

how bad was your cat's diabetes when you treated her?

my cat hasn't been eating for 2 days and he's not moving much. i'm worried he might be to far gone to save.

latebloomer, Friday, 14 September 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe the vet can give her a little kitty IV?

KitCat, Friday, 14 September 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

kitty IVs are real, one of my cats growing up had one! she was run over by a car but lived for another 6 months with daily vet visits.

bell_labs, Friday, 14 September 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

I just moved into this new neighborhood. There is a mangey stray that lives on this block who would be cute if properly groomed & fed. I've taken to calling her Mange. I have been leaving cat food out for her in the back yard.

Rain the kitty cat meanwhile is loving the big trees here, luckily for her we have second story windows & porch roofs via which to rescue her.

nickalicious, Friday, 14 September 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

My dad took Skittles into the vet today. The vet said that he was too far gone to be helped and that he would probably be dead by morning. So he was euthanized. I am of course very sad, but I've been expecting this. And at least his suffering has ended. I will miss my little guy.

RIP Skittles 1999-2007

latebloomer, Friday, 14 September 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry to hear that, latebloomer. It sounds like you took good care of him, though.
This is not nearly as sad, but we have been catsitting Aldo for the past year while the gf's mother was out of her house and now we have to return the little beast to her. We've grown way more attached than we thought we would and we're pretty upset to have to give him up.
Bastard cats, be stealing the emotions when you're not looking!

Skittles was very pretty, too. I'm a sucker for an orange and white cat.

kenan, Saturday, 15 September 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

he was a real sweetheart. a bit of a trouble maker (always stealing food and knocking down plastic drink cups), but a real cuddle cat. we taught him to talk, too.

thanks, everybody, for the kind words and support. :)

a bit of a trouble maker (always stealing food and knocking down plastic drink cups), but a real cuddle cat.

I wonder if those are orange-and-white-specific traits. My kitty will claw and gnaw her way into any food that's around, and loves an overturned beverage. Also loves lots of close company.

Oh, I'm so sorry, latebloomer. Cats are great.

kenan, Saturday, 15 September 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

So sorry, latebloomer. What a great photo - he looks like a lovely cat. Hope your mom is doing okay, and that Sindy isn't taking advantage of the situation.

so sorry latebloomer:(
my sister's cat died a couple of days ago. she was like a tiny elderly ballerina crossed with miss trixie from levy pants. no one knew how old she was because she just showed up one day and she always seemed frail, but she was very cute and she liked tuna and naps.

I just cut the hell out of this wiki section:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purr#Why_felines_purr

I should have saved what it said before. It was rambly and unsound and sounded like it was written by that woman from Grey Gardens. I was kind of amazed no one had flagged it before.

kenan, Saturday, 15 September 2007 10:43 (eighteen years ago)

There was a particularly weird bit before about how people liked purring sounds because they also liked to stroke human children. I wish I could remember the phrasing. It did not say or even imply that human children purr, only that humans like touching children. It was really creepy nonsense.

Aw, Latebloomer, I'm sorry your cat died. At least you took good care of him and he had a happy life. You must be really sad.

In our cat news, Ms. Lorelai Gilmore Brady Byrne is now fully integrated into the rest of our household. Our other cat, Linus, now likes her enough to bat her over the head and steal her seat, and the dogs still goggle at her as if she was some sort of alien.

I just don't know what I'll do when my cat goes. Their is some higher faculty that arises and equips you (or me, at least) to deal with the deaths of friends and loved ones, but when my last cat it it tore me to shreds. And I'm closer to this cat that I was to my last one. Cat death sux.

I saw a feral cat chasing something (field mouse? shrew? who knows) through tall grass today. It was like a six inch tall puma.

Oilyrags, Sunday, 16 September 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

Oh man, I was SURE for the last hour that Kitka had ran away. My dad helped me move stuff in the afternoon and I had to keep telling him to shut the door when he left. Looked all over my 1 bedroom apartment, couldn't find her anywhere, and there were even little pawprints in the dust in the hallway.

I was just typing up a lost cad ad on Craigslist when the little bitch pokes her head up behind my laptop -- she was hiding on the window sill behind the blinds. :>

One of my cats is having renal failure. She's 17. I'm awaiting word on whether it's acute or chronic. I wonder what the outlook on this kinda thing is.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

libcrypt - my cat was diagnosed with it too, they put them on a low protein diet and watch levels - might be ok - mine is a year later. food switch a bitch tho...she hates it still.

Wiggy Woo, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

Our local paper ran a story about a once-rare adrenal disorder in cats that is now epidemic. Flame retardants are suspected to have a causative role.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 01:10 (eighteen years ago)

God, the situation keeps getting worse. She's got a mammoth ulcer in her mouth, which explains why she wasn't eating. In fact, that side of her face is all puffy. The doc said it could be kidney-related or it could be a tumor. She's in the overnite animal hospital on 9th ave getting morphine and much IV fluids now.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

Lot of cat stuff today on ILX!

My cat bit through my nose this morning, as I already said on another thread.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

So, I went into Williamsburg today with a glorious hangover, as I had no desire to be in my apartment or my own neighborhood anymore, and was meeting boyfriend for dose of magicial mint iced tea to fix myself. After said fixative tea, I ate potato leek soup which also aided my gutworm, then sauntered over to the bookstore. Poking around for the shelves for a bit proved distracting enough, until I looked over to a rather blobular car that was seated near me. He was peering at me like he knew me from somewhere, then plaintively meowed. I walked over and petted him for a moment, and went back to my browsing. He meowed yet another time, and I petted him again; the poor fatass obviously had self esteem issues... This continued a few times more until I became fed up and realized that the only logical solution to the problem was to pick a book and head for a comfy chair, which I did. Once seated, I patted my lap for the kitty to DIVE ON TOP OF USING FULL BODY WEIGHT, walk in circles on me for about ten minutes, then plop down for continued bodily comfort adjustments. Once there, he snoozed (and SNORED) for almost exactly two hours, during which time several people pointed and whispered. One man asked if the cat was mine or the store's.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

dude.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

She was 1/2 her weight from a year ago, the tumor was huge, and her kidneys were getting no better. She had a hell of a time trying even to drink water, and the course of meds we were giving her wasn't improving her life at all. So we had her put to sleep.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:26 (seventeen years ago)

oh man. how old was she?

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:27 (seventeen years ago)

17 years old. So it's not like she didn't have a long life, though she was plagued by medical problems for most of it.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

Total sadness, man. Losing a cat, or any pet, that's been with you that long is really tough. Really sorry to hear.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

I had a dream a few nights ago in which one of my childhood kitties (a real fat bastard named Pooh) was frolicking with my current little man. He was the sweetest guy ever--hit by a car when he was about 7. It was one of those happy-sad dreams that you really, really wish was real when you wake up. Then you realize it's so not gonna happen.

latebloomer, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:44 (seventeen years ago)

Our other kitty, who is extremely social, appears a bit traumatized by her death. Yesterday morning, she pooped in the exact spot that was her former companion's favorite sitting place.

My wife and I have decided that this is a good excuse to get her a new companion, which we have been contemplating anyways for about 6 months. We "interviewed" on the phone last night with a siamese rescue agency, and we may have a new cat Saturday, provided that everyone "gets along". I dunno if I've violated the minimum grieving period, but I do know that the other cat will love to have a friend she can actually sleep with and someone who'll play during the 8 hours the house is quiet, lonely, and cold, each day.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

my cat Sindy wasn't exactly bothered by my cat skittle's death (they never got along much), but she has lost some weight since he died. i'm pretty sure it's because she doesn't have an extra bowl to steal food from.

latebloomer, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

aw

rescuing siamese cat sounds like a good way to honour kitty who died, i think. my other cat, whom i used to sometimes call Other Cat when i first got him 4 yrs ago, is siamese like and our first cat that i really remember from childhood was siamese. they are the greatest.

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:00 (seventeen years ago)

My sympathies, libcrypt.

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

Aw libcrypt I am so sorry. That is very hard and sad, though I am glad you got to love such a wonderful kitty.

Abbott, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

I once had a cat named Mephistopheles who was the sweetest, most lovingest little kitty in the world. She would put her forelegs around my neck, standing up on her hindlegs. I kid you not, when I slept on my belly, she would put her left arm (leg) around my neck and I would put my right arm around hers.

I wish I had a picture of that.

She was grey with lighter grey stripes, and extra fluffy, which made her look like some wizard cat, as did her jarring, beautiful green eyes. White whiskers and crazy-all-direction white hairs sprung out of her ears.

She was perfect.

She disappeared one day, who knows where (I think she got stolen), and since then I've had recurring dreams that someone brings me her hidesouly mangled corpse. How the fuck do I stop these?

Abbott, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

My old boy Ossi is also ruining Jesus' furniture now, since last Friday. He was 19 (or so). Those who know who I used to be on ILX and have read my anti-euthanasia ranting on cat threads will be interested to know that he died at home in my wife's arms about a week and a half ago. It was time, but that guy fought like a bear until the end, and as he was not in pain and not demented, it seemed immoral to us to have him put down as long as he would fight against a shot.

Nubbelverbrennung, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 08:46 (seventeen years ago)

:( for those who have lost kitties.

Rrobyn, have you had your cat checked for thyroid problems? My old-ish kitty (12), who used to be a chubster, got really thin while still eating loads. We assumed it was old age but turned out to be hyperthyroidism, which can lead to heart failure if left untreated, and now she's on meds she's piled the pounds back on again.

StanM, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 10:30 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry for everyone's kitty losses.

My cat (17) has thyroid problems too. She's never been a big cat but she's eating more food than ever and demanding more still and is now so thin I can feel the structure of her left shoulder through her fur. She also has these weird turns where she'll twitch and stare blankly through everyone and then pick a direction at random and lurch off in it until she hits a wall or falls over. Then she picks herself up, looks confused, and is back to normal. It's so sad to see. Did your cat do that, Meg?

She's on pills but it's still happening a bit and we don't want her to have an op except as a last resort because she doesn't seem in pain and her heart is so weak we're not sure she'd survive it. (A recent bad precedent for that gives us uncomfortable deja vu at the thought.)

Strange to think that thyroid problems could cause this but the vet assured us it's not that unusual.

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 10:50 (seventeen years ago)

Spacecadet, no experience of that, I'm afraid. Have you had her blood checked since she's been on meds? Our vet said it could take a while to get the dosage right.

WHY DOES MY CAT PEE ON MY GYM STUFF?

She peed on my gym shorts in the laundry, peed on my whole gym bag that I put on a shelf, and just now I look over at the couch and see that she is acting weird and squatting and peeing on the gym bag that I put on the couch (getting ready to walk out the door with it--guess I won't be going to the gym today--thanks fucking cat!!)

This cat is asking to be launched out a window.

o-ess, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

I've avoided posting pictures of our oldest cat, Zippy, because he has a really ugly mass over his right eye that I never got treated because it never bothered him. He developed a really disgusting golf-ball-sized mass on a back leg that I had the vet remove last week -- it was the first time this vet had seen Zippy, so he was kind of concerned about the thing over his eye. But when I told him he'd had it for at least five years and never shown the slightest discomfort, he said "well, I can't argue with that." Esp. since CBC and chem panel otherwise showed him in perfect health for a 16-year-old cat. He purrs so loud that the vet had to wave an alcohol swab under his nose to get him to shut up so he could listen to his lungs.

So I think I'll post some cat photos later today.

I got a new "rescue" kitty Saturday. She's a snowshoe Siamese, 13 months old. When she's less shy, I'll put up some pix. She's very cute and a little cross-eyed. The current queen of the house (16yo traditional Siamese) isn't so happy about the new arrival. Lots of hissing and growling, but no actual altercations yet.

aw yaay that is good cats news

my cat hates headphones! i thought it was just a kitten thing, so i haven't had any headphones lying around for months.

there are TONS of cords in my room, computer cables, iPod, usb stuff, and she hasn't chewed through anything in a long time. i bought some headphones last night (Sony cheapies), and the cord didn't make it through the night! why, kitka, why?!

Jordan, Thursday, 15 November 2007 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe you shouldn't buy bacon-flavored headphones anymore.

libcrypt, Friday, 16 November 2007 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

cat's don't know it's not bacon

latebloomer, Friday, 16 November 2007 02:08 (seventeen years ago)

ohguys my cat noam (my older black cat who is the best cat in world) is sick and i am scared :(
can't get vet appt until 10:30 anywhere - so made one with my vet, which is close by at least - and emerg animal hosp is far far away and it snowed yesterday so traffic sucks (and i dont' even have a car)
it is terrible to have to wait and sit with my poor cat who is obv in some kind of pain (he is just laying v still breathing quickly in kitchen and has been since 6 am) that i can't do anything about except call friends and write this and cry and feel bad for not having taken him to a vet for years and fuck

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 13:46 (seventeen years ago)

DG, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

a passing spacecadet, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

thanks guys
i took him to the vet and they checked him out for a while and took some blood, will get back to me soon (prob in the morning) re: results. lots of possibilities but right now all i know is that he isn't able to really move, though is not paralyzed, stroke is/was a possibility though, as is heart or kidney problems. all i can do is watch him and give him water in a dropper, try to make him eat some wet food, but he's not into any of that.
am hurting in my heart
and on top of it feeling guilty for not being at work where it's really busy right now. but my poor kitten, what can i do really but leaving him for a few hours doesn't seem right either.
sigh
tragically enough, a very good friend's cat died yesterday night :(
oh cats

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

poor puss :(

DG, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

i'm sorry rrobyn:-(

latebloomer, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

:(
noam died at 5 am here at home after about a 45 minutes of difficulty breathing, and then his heart just gave up. i don't know, it was fast but it was difficult. i wished i had some morphine or heroin or something around.
a friend is coming with me to the vet for his cremation. waiting is hard but it'll be better to have a friend there. i'm not getting the ashes though; i wldn't be able to deal with that. he was a very very good cat and there with me from age 20-32, which i imagine aren't the most fabulous years to be someone's cat, but he did a good job. oh cat. sigh :(

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

im so sorry robyn :( :( :( pp and I sometimes talk about what bad sad times it will be in our house when my black cat goes and when his orange cat goes.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

Alex in Denver, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 14:38 (seventeen years ago)

oh robyn, it breaks my heart to hear that. poor kitty. i hope you are okay...

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 14:41 (seventeen years ago)

So so sorry Robyn. RIP Noam, I bet he loved those 12 years he was with you though :( :( :(

Archel, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

i am half okay and half hurting all over
i took him in to the vet's so now he is gone for real - they were v v kind. test results showed it was diabetes but at a quite far-gone stage of ketoacidosis, though he exhibited no obvious symptoms until yesterday (and my bro is diabetic so i am pretty aware of the signs plus was around all of sunday (he re-watched some of the bourne supremacy with me) and half of monday morning and he wasn't going to the bathroom a lot or drinking more water than usual or anything different. i began to 'what if...' myself after learning diagnosis but what's the point in that). but dude was freakin strong from day 1. born on a farm and raised to 6 wks or so by a doberman! he ruled.

i feel a little silly and odd abt posting so much on this thread but i guess i talk through grief? somewhat. your condolences mean a lot and are helpful to me.

my friend who came with me is part of the couple who are the other two people in my band - and they are the ones whose 16-yr-old cat died on monday night. she said that their cat is hanging out with sun ra and everyone in space, which is the place, as we know, and i think this is where noam is and we all are/were/will be in some way and it is full of awesome love.

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

aww, i'm sorry robyn. :( i've got a great old cat and i'm totally scared of him going.

Jordan, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

I think old cats see the winter coming and just think, "Ah, fuck it. Thanks for the food and love folks, and don't forget me, but it's getting cold so I'm outta here."

Feeling for you, robyn. The pain diminishes over time, but boy howdy the first couple weeks after a cat death SUCK.

Nubbelverbrennung, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

Awww, rrrobyn, condolences. This sucks. (Cat life expentancy != human life expectancy) == proof there is no God.

caek, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

oh, rrrrobyn i'm sorry :( i just saw the news second-hand on nzbrd. having a kitty pass away is super difficult. i know he wouldn't want you to be toooooo sad for toooo long, though. all my best wishes.

ian, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

Yes fuck I concur caek, how can anyone argue for 'intelligent design' when kitties have such short lives but Reagan lives to be 88?

V. sorry rrrobyn, I hope you feel calmer soon tho I understand being v v sad for a long time after death of pet (I am sensitive abt these things so I got empathy here for you by the bishel).

Abbott, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 23:56 (seventeen years ago)

thanks again everyone. i was in a crazy amount of shock yesterday, whoa, but did not really know i was in shock, as i guess it plays out slightly differently depending on the situation. and though not really 'okay' today, am doing a lot better, or at least a lot less freaked out. going to go out in the world, go to work, etc, and be. it is a very weird and sad adjustment to have to make, and the lack of his presence, esp here at home is obvious, but it's true that he was all about being and staying happy (though cool about it, haha), so i will honour that for sure and be happy that his time on earth happened with me, which was a really beautiful and amazing coincidence - life's some wild stuff :)

rrrobyn, Thursday, 22 November 2007 13:04 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

My cat took a shit on my roommate's couch this morning. The fact that I find this very satisfying notwithstanding (he spent all last night proudly crowing that my cat was afraid of him), it's pretty much the last straw as far as his behavior is concerned. He's been acting up a lot since I moved to the new place, and I suspect it's because I'm never home.

My ex worked from home and was able to spend the whole day with the two cats, but after we broke up I took "my cat" (which I never even wanted to begin with but eventually grew to love wtf wtf) with me to the new place. I'm out of the house 9-10 hours a day for work, not to mention the time I spend out socially & the time I'm sleeping, so the poor guy spends the majority of his time alone or around my roommate who has apparently done his asshole best to terrify him.

I need to find him a new home. I'm gonna ask the ex first to see if she wants to take over. After that I have a handful of friends who might want him. If they won't have him I'll put a few ads up on CList, and failing even that I might just say a little prayer and hand him over to the Humane Society.

I really really don't want it to get to that last option.
