Dear Kathryn,

... What do we have to do in order to get this across to the McCain campaign? Can you get ... all the rest of the “word warriors” and “talk titans” to hammer this point home over the next week? Gaffes, no worries, mate! The medias hate for her only solidifies my support. Bring ‘her on, she can’t be worse than Biden. She does not need to cram & prep, let her rip with what she knows. I’m not supporting her database like she’s some sort of Johnny Mnemonic, I am supporting her character & judgment. I want to see her duke it out with media and spin doctors.

Please, please hammer this home!

NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

In debates, what you don't say is just as important as the bullshit you do say. In 1980, whenever President Jimmy Carter finished a point, Ronald Reagan would pull out that Alzheimery and condescending "heh-heh-heh" laugh that translated to "Oh, Jimmy, you fucking naive hillbilly." Al Gore would audibly sigh, and George Bush would spasmodically twitch (not sure if that was a tactic or not).

So John McCain, I have two words of advice for you: Fart... Machine. It's a box that makes fart sounds. Nothing drives an elitist more crazy and fills voting hillbillies with glee like a juicy fart sound whenever people like Barack Obama are talking about "well-funded capitalization." Here are a few more ways to nonverbally communicate that your opponent is an idiot:

AIR WANKING. Eye-rolling is old-timey. Today's hot young debaters pretend they are air-masturbating (or wanking) to show their displeasure with an opponent's argument. And if you really want to drive your point home, do the "oral-sex wank" where you wank toward your mouth while jabbing your tongue into your cheek. Joe Biden should try this one behind Sarah Palin's back.

PANTSING. Nothing's funnier during a dry speech about governmental fiscal responsibility than suddenly pulling down your opponent's pants. UNLESS! You do it to John McCain and then yank his shirt over the back of his head. He won't be able to do anything about it... BECAUSE HE CAN'T RAISE HIS ARMS!

colette, Saturday, 27 September 2008 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

gabbs how do you figure McCain's plaing w/1)base and 2)"undecideds" here

1) base already made up their minds one way or the other - he's done some to comfort them and some to make them nervous, but it really doesn't matter either way

2) he's made no big but many small mistakes (you could say the same about Obama, tho his percentage is much higher), and though he's done well at a few isolated moments, overall the effect is of a guy less vigorous than his opponent, who doesn't get out of the Senate much, and talks a little too much about himself and the past and a little too little about the people he's supposed to be working for and their future

The only channel I get is Fox. Not Fox news, just Fox. Unsurprisingly, before it cut back to According to Jim, they seemed to award it to McCain. Why? Because for the first half of the debate, Obama kept calling McCain "John", which voters "from around here" will surely notice!

nabisco, Saturday, 27 September 2008 03:17 (seventeen years ago)

Fwiw this was the wonkiest debate I've ever seen in my life and I loved it. O came off stronger on economy and held his own on FP, McCain looked wobbly on econ & was passable on his PASSIONATE SUBJECT of FP. It's an O win. I think McCain's "What are you gonna tell Iran? 'No?'" soundbite might have some traction, but O's "You were wrong. You were wrong. You were wrong." was murdah.

thought McCain was awful in the econ part but O didn't really hit him on it

Obama should have said something like, it sounds like I'm talking to the middle American voter who's hurting and you're stuck in a Senate boardroom

instead he kept saying "yes I agree that earmarks are an important issue"

I mean seriously, who gives a f*ck about earmarks. McCain could have given those "I'm gonna cut pork" answers in 2000, 2004, 2008 or 2012. just completely disconnected from the fact that people are seriously worried. the question is "what about the economy" and your answer is "we have to deal with military cost-plus contracts"?

On the other hand, trade "Afghanistan" for "Iraq" and you're trading one kind of militarism for another.

I kind of saw this one as a stalemate win for McCain - i.e. basically a draw but a draw in a situation where Obama should have had a clear advantage. McCain also closed much stronger. I thought Obama got a bit too dry and emotionless at times -- I kept thinking of early, pre-coaching Carcetti.

McCain's frequent attempts to channel Reagan and/or invoke Reagan are attempts to turn his age from a handicap into an asset for a chunk of Repub base voters, right?

Obama could have hit much harder but it might have backfired if he seemed "mean"- so he took the high road, but that is something that educated Dem candidates can lose by doing all too well. When Clinton was called a liberal he went all folksy and said "That dawg won't hunt" and poured on the aw-shucks and flipped it back- Obama should have done the same.

Drew Daniel, Saturday, 27 September 2008 04:57 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not going for novelty. I'm looking for a reasoned explanation for things I clearly perceive as pandering bullshit. Is that the political culture? Appearances? I know the fascination here concerns the actual direction of national and world affairs, but the way the candidates seem to have been presented is more or less entirely built around personality, historical flashpoints and great, unsubtle key issues. Nuance, method or rationale doesn't seem to come into it, and the responses here seem to acknowledge this, concentrating on who put on a better show, who was the more convincing debater. I'm sure I'm naive and should stfu because this is the way of things across the world, but even here things seem to be more current-affairs-nitpicking-policy-driven. Without all the glitz. NB: I know this is not an original opinion, but it's a widely-held one here. Please disabuse us.

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Saturday, 27 September 2008 04:58 (seventeen years ago)

The thing is, this is debate 1 of 3. If Obama came out swinging in the first one, where does he go from there in 2 and 3? I think the measured, gentlemanly tone was perfect for the first meeting. Watch him get tougher and tougher in the next 2.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 27 September 2008 04:59 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I've heard that from a few other sources; Obama starts out light, then starts hitting harder.

Office Cat is Eating the Monitor Again (kingfish), Saturday, 27 September 2008 05:02 (seventeen years ago)

This was a smarter debate than there's been in a while, but at the same time it wasn't REALLY smart. Like if you want to make it smart, don't get into all this "My opponent favors sitting down across table, whereas I would at most videoconference so as not to smell his stank breath" bullshit. Ask them about their governmental philosophies. Ask them about their broader views of the role of the US military in the world, and don't accept empty cliches. That's where the differences would be clearer, if you really made them explain themselves well.

They both scored some points. I wish Obama was tougher on the fact that earmarks are a tiny fraction of the budget. The way McCain talks about them, you'd never know they're less than 2% of the entire thing.

I thought Obama's best moment was throwing Bomb Iran back in McCain's face after McCain called him a rookie for saying he'd bomb Pakistan. But McCain was good too, much less erratic than he seems in the campaign.

Palin is going to hurt him really bad though. She's a complete disaster, and all those people who warned not to "underestimate" her clearly overestimated her. She's not even remotely convincing as a national politician.

mccain's body language is extremely limited by his enduring years of torture and his age; he simply can't make certain gestures without feeling pain, and I watch it and hate it for him that he has to deal with this kind of shit

otoh, obama can look another dude in the eye, can get his arguments across without a kung-fu chop, and can stand straight up to anyone and as far as I have seen he ain't afraid of SHIT

I like John because he is a cussed old stubborn son-of-a-bitch in the truest sense of the word; you could very well add the L to his surname and he would fit the bill. But I don't want an action hero for president, I want a guy that had to work triple hard for everything because he was a half negro with a weird name and no money, who never gets angry, who just moves on, and doesn't take anything personally, whether it be praise or condemnation.

His soundbites play well on that newfangled radio thing McCain was probably thinking of. TV, not so much. It is totally O's strategy to start a debate series in neutral and crank up a level in each subsequent debate. He needed to find out how McCain would phrase and repeat his attacks (pls to show 72 yr old man who does not think anyone younger is 'naive') and the important thing is that O did not really reveal his 'attack strategy' on Mc because he has so many potential angles to go to. He has also paid lip service to Mc in ways that imply respect given, fine, here we go, that was *last* week sorrow/anger stuff.

BTW horseshit! definitely said, twice.

BEING. ANGRY. anybody who knows a "high-collared negro" who comes from mason dixon -S territory knows; or hispanics, for that matter; 'less you pure white, you got no reason for frustration. He will never follow the kos/huffington drive, he's better than that, always, because he has to be. Biden said as much tonight, in so many words. The thing I argue to my staunch former-GOP-now-FENCE colleagues is that this is a man who plays chess five moves ahead, who understands logistics, who knows every in and out of the game already, and not even fifty; your other option is a guy who lets himself get hoodwinked by the house reps and harry reid. Office Cat is Eating the Monitor Again (kingfish), Saturday, 27 September 2008 06:43 (seventeen years ago)

apparently Obama catered more towards independents (swing votes) by being positive. good for him. he also established that he will be strong with foreign policy. of course, Obama's war in Afghanistan (and maybe Pakistan) will be quite costly. And I don't know how he plans on paying for it since a net tax cut doesn't give the government more money through his tax plan than Bush's current plan (correct me if I'm wrong).

And this Afghanistan war was mostly a campaign strategy to get the conservatives who feel out of touch with liberal McCain... but it could end up being a huge war, so in that sense, we are going to need more money from somewhere or else Obama is going to raise the deficit just as much as McCain. (more or less?)

Anybody else getting the vibe that Kerry had a hand in helping O spar this week?
Note: this is not a bad thing
― Office Cat is Eating the Monitor Again (kingfish)

-- why do you think that? I want to hear more about Kerry's role.

The Guardian website only shows 5 minutes of highlights. At the end Obama sauntered up to his wife and said 'how we *doin'?' - to her, not about himself. I'm surprised no-one here noticed that.

Local Garda, Saturday, 27 September 2008 10:20 (seventeen years ago)

the debate as sport with score cards on CNN was kinda bizarre. the panel pretty solidly scoring higher for O than Mc during the debate and then the post-debate chatter being "tie/McCain slight win" was bizarre x53. sure this has been covered, but damn too much to look over.

I found Obama's relation to his wife somehow - confident, engaging, likeable. I liked it partly because I felt it was part of a genuinely personal relationship in a way, not staged - though in public, to be sure, and knowing that people were watching. I liked the fact he asked her 'how we doing' or 'how you doing' when of course the relevant question was 'how did I do?' - there was something self-effacing about that.

I understand that of course he could not ask that. I am just reflecting on, responding to, the grace that I find that this remarkable man conveys.

I really appreciate cnn for claiming to be nonpartisan and than the post-debate chatter saying things like "tie/McCain slight win" but when they get into the details which obviously insinuate that Obama won.

It's like they are trying to gain back the Republican demographic, but are secretly pandering to the Obama fans (by giving Obama the big wins and McCain lots of small wins, etc...)

Fox News uses camera angles and split screen so that you can't tell that Obama is talking at him across the stage, it looks like they're both always addressing JL.

12HOOS2012 (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Saturday, 27 September 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

I watched it on CNN, and it was honestly pretty boring, both candidates saying stuff we already know, reinstating their points, McCain pissing me off with his "You don't understand" bullshit. I mean, that just sounded disrespectful to me. Far worse than Obama calling him "John" instead of "Senator McCain".

It was funny how after the debate everyone was saying "Oh yeah, there's no clear winner". Me and my dad watched the whole thing and pretty much agreed on that. I mean, even if you hate McCain you have to admit he held his ground here. And then the polls came in saying Obama had won and then I think it was Blitzer that said "Well, you know, once people start saying somebody won, then it picks up steam, and it becomes official" or something of that nature. That kind of upset me, him openly saying how manipulative the whole process is.

I liked listening to the first part on the radio over to my dad's place (he has a TV, i dont), it seemed more timeless and befitting a presidential debate. The CNN shot with the audience reaction thing was bizarre and really difficult to see..

Both candidates lose big-time in the economic policy part of the debate. My dad is pro-McCain and I was leaning toward Obama so whenever sparks would fly we found common ground on the fact that these two are gonna bail out wall street/are corporate whores anyways/we are all fucked/etc.

Adam Bruneau, Sunday, 28 September 2008 15:00 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, even if you hate McCain you have to admit he held his ground here.

he kept getting facts wrong, and came across as snide and nasty and impetuous. debates are partly about presenting your manner and personality and he lost here big time. people might think those things don't matter but who would you rather have making judgements and decisions?

Haha, I was drunk for this, too -- I'd been doing wine tastings all afternoon and then had a 22 oz of Newcastle and 12 oz of PBR on top of it. Drinking game my girlfriend and I devised included swigs for "Main Street" from either candidate, "Look" from Obama, and "My friends" from McCain, which kept us going. Phrases we also would've drunk to had they had been mentioned: "President of the United States of America" (entire phrase) from Obama and "Vietnam" from McCain (I took a swig for "P.O.W.," anyway).

To be honest, my immediate reaction was that this was pretty much a draw but in a way that was ultimately better for Obama, inasmuch as he proved he could keep up and throw some punches on McCain's putative turf. I'm happy, however, to see Obama seems to have polled much better than that. I probably didn't register McCain's visual "mistakes" as being that significant because a) they seemed like par for the course with him (of course he's going to laugh sarcastically like that, the goon) and b) I was paying more attention to the verbal give-and-take. But on reflection, it seems like the viewers who aren't paying attention to every word -- which is to say most of them -- are going to draw a more favorable impression from Obama's demeanor than from McCain's.

I know what you mean -- my girlfriend was shouting "Bridge to Nowhere, Bridge to Nowhere" at the TV -- but I think Obama is wise to lay off Palin and let the media do its job. Plus, earmarks don't have the same resonance for most Americans as "tax cut for the middle class" does.

jaymc, Monday, 29 September 2008 04:02 (seventeen years ago)

i just really really don't get all the "this was really boring" comments here. on so many levels. first of all, because i didn't find it "boring" at all. second, because to the extent that it was "boring", i'd suggest that's to be expected, because it was the first debate, and obama was going to play it very cool and cautious. he's gotta pace himself and not reveal all his lines of attack at this point. plus of course he knows that if he revs up the heat too much in certain ways, he risks setting off all those "oh no black man angry" buttons. i'm fascinated by how obama maintains this delicate balance... assertiveness without rage... how he parries mccain's attacks, how he looks at the big picture and then lasers in on the key points. etc.

I assumed the reason Obama "won" & went up in the polls is because all the undecided voters who still weren't sure abt Obama being "ready to lead" finally realized he is not as inexperienced as they thought -- I think he, way more than McCain, was the one who had to prove to ppl that he could hold his ground
