My lunch. I win.

"Grecian Chicken" which is a 1/4 chicken (breast), potatoes, rice, and bread for $4.15 and it's delicious. From Mr. Greek's.

al kaline trio (dan m), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

we get to pick our own and we're supposed to use things we're interested in so it's not all fakey, so i'm asking for information about building musical instruments. i'm asking for something general to see how they get more details out of me. in fact i'm going to actively try and make them look bad and ask "where can i find books about musical instruments?" first to see if they just point me off somewhere without getting more information (which they're supposed to)

metametadata (n/a), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

oops

try this http://alfocus.ala.org/videos/national-library-week-reference-desk

La Lechera, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

That's so interesting, Nick. When I worked at a bookstore my favorite part was helping people find books they didn't have enough information on, kind of sleuthing out something they wanted. As long as that's your JOB, which hopefully for reference librarians it is.

But I can so easily imagine that a lib's job is sixty other things AND reference desk tasks and people who want to know how to make instruments but can't even say so are ON THEIR OWN and rightly so. There's a difference between "There was an author interviewed on the radio, he was talking about tennis and I think his name was three words" which, being kind of current-eventy, you'll probably eventually find...and "I'm looking for a book, it's about this big, and it's blue", which, those people are welcome to look in our blue book section. If they can find it.

I've decided that I REALLY need a hair cut, plus I'll be out tomorrow, plus I have soup on at home, plus I don't care enough to watch baseball before it gets to a really critical point.

Go Cubs, Go Tampa.

Are you anti-Sox?

jaymc, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 21:15 (sixteen years ago)

I basically root for the Sox as long as they're not playing the Cubs.

jaymc, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 21:15 (sixteen years ago)

It's like I told my friend Deepak the other night: I don't really care about baseball, but if I did I'd feel compelled to support the White Sox. Or maybe Detroit, but I don't live there any more.

PS Guise this song is stuck in my head:

La Lechera, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

i support all chicago sports teams. despite living here for almost five years now, i still feel like i can't support the cubs or the sox over the other without being a poseur. i'm pushing more for the cubs this year because they're the better team and thus deserve to win more, plus the whole 100 years thing, but i want the sox to do well too. i also vaguely like the brewers and would support them more if they weren't in the same division as the cubs and also didn't totally suck ass.

metametadata (n/a), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

the rays are going to crush the sox unfortunately. i called the sox in four on the i love baseball thread because literally no one was calling the series for the sox and i was feeling contrary, plus if the sox somehow end up winning i'll look like a genius.

metametadata (n/a), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

I like Tokyo Police Club but was sort of disappointed by the full-length, apart from "Your English Is Good" (which I'd heard a year ago as a single, anyway).

jaymc, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

Sports-interested parties should definitely consider the Fire v. Columbus game on 10/12 (Sunday, 2PM). Columbus is in 1st place overall, the Fire are in 3rd, and it'll be a pretty important match in determining who wins the regular season.

It'll also be the second to last regular season home game, there will be a visiting contingent from Columbus to provide someone to shout at, and the Fire supporters group is putting together a tifo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tifo) display for the team. Tickets can be had as cheap as 20 bucks, I think, and there's not a bad seat in the house. AFAIK Kates and I are going, I think mattttttt is going to be out of town. We can tailgate or whatever, too.

(I swear I will stop posting about the Fire one of these days if no-one is interested. But believe me, I was once like you, and now I am hooked.)

al kaline trio (dan m), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

To the extent that I care about baseball, I find the Sox and their fans and their marketing grating. True, a train full of Cubs fans is no treat, but that whole "show the swagger" ad campaign plays to their their fans' macho "bad-boy" arrogance. I didn't care too much until they won the world series and they became insufferable.

Also, there is....someone whom I don't like who is a Sox fan and it helped push me over into really disliking them.

Also that Ozzie and the sex doll rape thing seemed about par for the course.

OK, this is annoying. There is approximately a 10 second delay in between the Cubs game broadcast and what is actually happening. I have the windows open, so I hear the crowd cheering, then 10 seconds later see DeRosa has hit a homerun.

I can't comment as to whether Ozzie's behavior is standard for male athletic teams anywhere (though the fact that it got so much attention suggests that it is exceptional), but the subsequent defense of it fits in with the macho, salty, roughneck attitude I referred to earlier. He could take a cue from fellow dickheads John Rocker Tim Hardaway and at least grudgingly apologize.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Sunday, 5 October 2008 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

My weekend:
Katie @nush@ and I went to Holl@nd Mich to canvass for Obama, which was not all that fun, but it was OK (one woman told Katie and me that she wanted nothing to do with a man who killed babies and we met a number of closeted Obama supporters). Then we went to Porkapalooza which was great and I want to go again. We ate sausage, drank New Holland beers, then ate Luaued pig (which did not fully cook in its underground pit, so they had to lay it out and grill it. The corpse looked very much like a human torso with short limbs that had been worked on by Jefferey Dahmer. But it tastes wonderful and the pineapple sticky rice with gingered sweet potatoes were perfect with it.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3065/2845717523_d05d286308.jpg

At the Porkfest we ran into my bosses, and L|bby offered to let us stay at her place in Harbert. We went to her place, drank some wine and solved the world's social problems from our armchairs.

I want to live in her house - the inside is all original 1950s design - including a really cool oven - and has a wonderful screened in porch and it is only about 1/8 mile to Lake MI and 1:10 to Chicago.

In the morning L. cooked us eggs, 2 packs of bacon, and biscuits smeared with her homemade blueberry preserves.

Totally successful weekend.

Nah, I've got a friend who lived there, daydreams about moving back, and showed me those listings. After seeing what's available, though, it does sound appealing.

Eazy, Sunday, 5 October 2008 20:10 (sixteen years ago)

There are really few things better than standing by a bonfire in the crisp autumn air, drinking beer, eating pork and gazing upon stars and handsome midwestern men in gray hoodies.

Also, Gobama.

A la the London and NYC-centric threads on New Answers today, what CTA line do you wish existed?

primary: the "Circle" line
secondary: the 63rd st. Green Line past Cottage Grove

Maybe a monorail down Western Ave. from the brown line in Lincoln Square down to the green line.

Eazy, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

well, i guess there are only so many ways to prepare balls (that this guy knows about)

i had the most wonderful lunch today, guys. my class cooked (just like last semester) and this is what we ate:

arroz y gandules (puerto rico)
arroz a la valenciana (nicaragua)
flautas de pollo (mexico)
chilaquiles con salsa verde (mexico)
rellenitos w/ bean filling (guatemala)
pork shoulder en adobo* (michoacan/mexico)
coctel de camarones (mexico? it was shrimp cocktail)
arepas con sofrito y pollo (a la Amanda)

*this sauce totally blew my mind. it was the deepest kind of spicy i have ever tasted. so. delicious.

I say this in all honestness, and I have witnesses: the first time I took a shot of Malort, people around me reacted, but I didn't. They reacted to the fact that I didn't seem to find anything much odd about the stuff. I just tossed it back. It was like they just watched somebody run off a cliff and not fall, Wile E. One obligation of living in the apartment in the "fine arts" dorm wing means having some kind of interaction with the students, so the R.A. put together a lunch today. No one came, so I had lunch with him in the cafeteria, and two other R.A.s joined us. They all talked about how out of control the kids are. Choices for lunch: apples, bananas, corn dogs, sloppy joes, and a smörgåsbord of cake and donuts.

what does the alternate juror do? is anyone going to the big house or you can't tell us?

La Lechera, Thursday, 9 October 2008 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

the alternate juror does the same thing the regular jurors has to do except for deliberate. so i had to sit in the courtroom and listen to all the testimony and whatnot but i got to leave this morning before the jury went to talk about the verdicts. i don't know if anyone is going to the big house or if a verdict has even been decided yet, but there's a phone number i can call to find out. i'm glad i wasn't on the regular jury because i was totally unsure how i would decide

metametadata (n/a), Thursday, 9 October 2008 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

La Lechera, Thursday, 9 October 2008 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

Was this down on Calfornia or downtown or in the burbs?

Eazy, Thursday, 9 October 2008 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

i had trouble enjoying the first day because i didn't think i would actually get picked to serve on a jury, and then once i was, i was really stressed out that i might fall behind on school stuff. i would have enjoyed it more if i was just missing work. yesterday was better, and today was good because i was pretty sure i wouldn't have to be there long. the worst things about it were: 1) aforementioned tedium, mainly the really formalized ways they have to verify statements and introduce evidence, 2) having to hang out with the other jurors all the time (they were mostly annoying) and not being able to call anyone, 3) having to eat "lunch" in a tiny room in the courthouse with the other jurors. the case itself was pretty interesting.

it was down on california (2650 s. california)

Nick, would you have feared gang retaliation had you been on the real jury?

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Thursday, 9 October 2008 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

eh not really, these dudes didn't really seem particularly organized. in fact, it was never really clear to me if the shooter and the victim were in different gangs or in different factions of the same gang - i think it was the latter. this is the gang that the shooter and most of the people involved in the case were in. btw this was a shooting that happened three years ago

metametadata (n/a), Thursday, 9 October 2008 20:18 (sixteen years ago)

i'm sure everyone remembers what happened with startling clarity

La Lechera, Thursday, 9 October 2008 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

well part of what was interesting was that one guy, the main eyewitness, came in and told the police what he saw the day after the shooting. he was pretty much the only person who, in the court i was in, said it was the defendant who did it. then there were a couple of other people who gave grand jury testimony saying they had heard the defendant brag about the shooting and helped dispose of the gun, but they basically refused to say so in the court i was in, meaning their grand jury testimony had to be read into evidence line by line. a couple of them said they had lied in the grand jury to get deals from the cops. one of them claimed he couldn't read and so wasn't even sure what the statement he signed said, but someone from the court testified she had him read back part of the statement before signing it. a lot of the defense was about trying to discredit the one eyewitness and say there wasn't enough light or time for him to see what he said he saw. but he was a pretty strong (and/or well-coached) witness. it got pretty convoluted.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Thursday, 9 October 2008 21:03 (sixteen years ago)

argh

OK most of you know about my situation wrt my job ending, being laid off, and severance. I just got out of a quick meeting with a manager from a different department who is looking to fill a position that I'm basically perfectly qualified for. I think I'm going to apply, but getting the position would negate the offer of severance pay. With the economic news of late, taking a new job while I can get it (esp. a new job that will be as good if not better than this one) makes a lot of sense, but I am still conflicted as hell. Better to keep options open I guess.

al kaline trio (dan m), Friday, 10 October 2008 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

i can see how that would be a tough decision. i don't really have any good advice.

I did! I applied to one already.

al kaline trio (dan m), Friday, 10 October 2008 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

maybe once your severance dries up, the economy will be fixed. or hey, if you spend your severance in the U.S., maybe you can actively FIX the economy, ensuring yourself new employment. it's like that snake that eats its own tail

metametadata (n/a), Friday, 10 October 2008 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

Argh, indeed! It's hard to turn down 6 months severance. You will qualify for unemployment benefits, so you would have basic living expenses plus your severance to carry you through, but what if the shit hits the fan in earnest.... Tough choices!

al kaline trio (dan m), Friday, 10 October 2008 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

travis went to william & mary, he was in the "punk frat." this was before my time there.

one of the formative live shows in my life was dismemberment plan (right around the release of ...is terrified), chisel (ted leo's old band, which i still prefer to his solo stuff), and trusty (an undeservedly forgotten pop band on dischord) at the 9:30 club. i've probably talked about this show before. it was probably the first indie rock show i went to and i knew nothing about any of the bands.

crusty but benign (kenan), Saturday, 11 October 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

Hey, I've posted about the Fire a bunch of times now, and if no one responds, well, this will probably be the last time. If you've ever been interested in taking in a game (or two) now is the best chance you're going to have to do so cheaply anytime soon.

For the final regular season game (10/23), and the first home playoff game (date TBD), there is a special deal. For $30 you get two tickets to *each* game, plus a donation to the Nothing But Nets anti-malaria organization. To put it in perspective, a single ticket to one of those games would be $15. These are not magnificent seats, but it is a nice stadium and there are no bad views.

If anyone's interested, let me know and I'll pass along the relevant details. We can probably coordinate rides and stuff, too. Come!

Today K8E and Jenny and I went to Oak Park and ate all sorts of wonderful, wonderful cheese, and some pretty decent wine. I was reticent to get a cheddar b/c it seems so ordinary, but that's only b/c I usually buy Kraft, and not the 10-year-aged stuff, which is all that is good about cheddar, plus nuances like a citrusy taste and little crystals that crunch lightly when you bite into them.

Also, we had some decadent triple cream soemthings and a rich, spicy, and buttery blue. For dessert, bacon-chocolate.

I would've seen Big Science/Office if I wasn't already going to Mountain Goats/Kaki King. J0hn D. was funny and charming on stage, but man, do I love Kaki King's music, and it was a treat to see her live finally. (Best Mtn. Goats song was actually a collaboration with her.)

As for tomorrow, I was thinking about seeing the Arthur Russell documentary at the Siskel Center after work ... but I wouldn't be opposed to pub quiz instead.

I was also at the Mountain Goats / Kaki King show! First time seeing MG as a full band, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Though I was a bit disappointed that they didn't get a chance to play "lovecraft in brooklyn" -- I craved the rock. I bought the mg/kaki king 12" despite that fact that I don't have a record player.

2. English Premier League (ahem, Dan)

Hi. I am here today. I am bossless all week.

KitCat, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

Well, the name of the round is Dampened Over Letters, which I anagrammed into Arrested Development. I suppose it could be about the early '90s rap group, but given Quizmaster Dave's proclivities, I'm guessing it's about the TV show.

jaymc, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

Full rounds:

1) Dampened Over Letters 12 pts
2) Hulling Preemies Agree 11 pts
3) Match- First Lines 13 pts
4) Chemical State Round 16 pts
5) Dead Or Canadian- Red vs Blue 11 pts
6) Picture Round 15 pts
7) General Knowledge

2. English Premier League (ahem, Dan)

This could either be pretty good or very bad. Does the second round usually have a theme question style? I can't recall.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:11 (sixteen years ago)

What do you mean by theme question style?

jaymc, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

I guess I meant like "Dead or Canadian"'s one-answer-or-the-other questions, or how the first round always seems to be anagrams. I dunno, you seem to have researched it a bit and I wasn't sure. If it's like the only other time I did the quiz where it was matching the EPL team to their stadium, I probably won't do so hot.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, no, I think it's just straight-up questions.

And, fwiw, the first round isn't anagrams. The name of the round is just anagrammed in the e-mail he sends out.

The "Chemical States" round involves forming words based on the abbreviations for chemical elements (as on the periodic table) and for states (as designated by the USPS). So for example, Missouri + Boron = MOB.

jaymc, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

Oh right, I remember the Chemical one from last time.

Dear Newish Workplace,
It would be nice if you told me before you hired me that I would not be allowed to take any time off around Christmas aside from the holidays already set.
Secondly, I do not like it that you said I could only have Christmas Eve off tentatively (and then I was informed by someone else that probably means no).
Thirdly, I do not like it that one of my coworkers just scolded me for even ASKING for that day off because she already did and apparently we are not allowed to both be off the same day.
DUMB.

i'm not sure about your question, but i did learn about a special diet that is supposed to help with food poisoning: BRAT (bananas, rice, apples, toast) and nothing else til symptoms go away. it was in this "superfeast" book i got from the library. it's all about maximizing nutritional content.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

I use the BRAT diet whenever I am pukey sick as a general reintroduction to food.

How is superfeast?
Hey, I'm listening to Goblin, by the way!

KitCat, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

i think it's pretty good, even though it's written by a britisher and the recipes have weird (haha) measurements. i like the explanations of the nutritional benefits of various foods and the suggestions for allergies, cancer, stomach ailments seem pretty good to me. i wouldn't buy it, but reading it has been educational. i didn't know about the BRAT thing, for instance.

in other news, it's a good month for goblin. (then again, any month is a good month for goblin!)

La Lechera, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 15:46 (sixteen years ago)

KitCat, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

the BRAT thing is kinda common sense, right? bland foods that won't test your stomach too much?

Jordan, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

well sure, and of course i am not feeding myself panang curry when i have stomach troubles, but i think there's something special about bananas, rice, apples and toast? i dunno. i just had never heard that before. my mom was not exactly at the head of the nutritional bandwagon.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Friday, 17 October 2008 15:32 (sixteen years ago)

Sweet. I would like to go back to Toronto. The only time I've been there was when I was eight years old. Maybe one of these days I'll make it to the film festival.

KitCat, Friday, 17 October 2008 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

It's a package deal: the bus ride and a ticket to the Fire v. TFC game for the sum total of One Benjamin. Hotel not included. TFC games are very popular and hard/expensive to get into, so it's a decent deal.

You guys, I am drinking decaf coffee for the second day in a row, on account of the fact that I ran out of tea, and the trace amounts of caffeine are making me jumpy.

Also, thanks for allowing me the opportunity to be self-reliant rather than just giving me an answer.

If you want to find any bands or such, pick up a copy of this paper. Kensington Market is definitely fun, and College Street (on the north end of it) is a good one to wander on as well. Soundscapes is a little indie record store near there.

If McCain and Palin win, I may just find a Canuck bride and head up there.

I learned from the New York magazine profile of Nate Silver that he wrote a short-lived blog called The Burrito Bracket in which he quantitatively analyzed burritos at Wicker Park taquerias and created a seeded tournament format to determine the best burrito in the area. It looks like he didn't finish, though.

i like violet hour. it wasn't as snobby as i was afraid it might be, aside from the unmarked door and silly velvet curtains we had to pass through to get in. the drinks were good too.

first i had this:

Dark & Stormy
Cruzan Black Strap, Brugal Anejo, Lime, House Made Ginger Syrup

which was really good - very gingery.

then i had this:

The Orchard
Laird's Bonded Applejack, Lemon, Blis Maple Syrup, Pimento Dram

which i didn't like as much, it was too tart for me.

then we all shared this:

Maloney's Irish Cream
Powers, Ardbeg 10yr, Cream, Orange Flower Water

which was amazing - simultaneously sweet and creamy and very very smoky.

1. Nice hair! It's very right for you.

2. Violent Hour was pretty great - I was very pleasantly surprised by their cocktail creations.

3. Six Flags today was:
- exhausting
- terrifying
- and last but absolutely not least, a violation of the finances

Best: the Raging Bull's initial drop scared me nigh unto pants-shitting, and it's a nice looong ride.
Most disappointing: The Dark Knight darkened indoor rolly coaster was so-so. Afterward we all agreed had to wait nearly 3 hours like the commoners*, we would have been pissed.

* the financial violation isn't limited to entrance and food costs; we bought the Flash Pass, Gold version, which allowed us to reserve a spot in line through an electronic device, and show up at the front of the appointed time. We wouldn't have bothered with it, but it was insanely busy, and while expensive, it was wonderfully effective.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Monday, 20 October 2008 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

Via a friend of a friend:

I don’t usually do this, but circumstances compel me to remind you that there will be a referendum on the November 4th ballot asking whether the State of Illinois legislature should hold a CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION, to change the state’s constitution.

A political scientist I know, in fact several poli. scis plus some economists in this state, say it is NOT a good idea for the following reasons:

1. A constitutional convention would cost an estimated $100,000, which the state doesn’t have.

2. The constitution can be amended as is, without having to have an entire convention or new constitution.

3. There are rumored to be special interests on BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE that want the convention, and it is doubtful that their wishes are in the best interests of the public at large.

4. Consider who would be In charge of the convention. It would be the same folks who couldn’t get their act together to provide a budget, and can’t get along with each other.

I’m just passing this information on to you. Vote as you wish.

I'm gonna vote on Saturday, I've decided.

coffee
vanilla
butter pecan
pistachio

i like spicy/peppery ice cream too, when i can find it.

Mackinac Island Fudge is made by Jilbert's Dairy in Marquette, MI, so I don't know if it's for sale outside the UP/Northern WI. Also I guess the dairy has been sold so who knows if it's being made anymore. It is what it sounds like, ice cream of various flavors rippled with solid and soft pieces of fudge. I'm "not a big ice cream guy" too, but it's pretty badass, esp. the cherry and peanut butter kinds.

my favorite easily available ice cream flavor is ben & jerry's creme brulee but the best ice cream i have ever had was salted caramel at the place in san francisco that jody recommended (i have a thing for caramel-y flavors, in case you can't tell). normally even when i'm eating ice cream i like, i've had enough after a couple of scoops, but i felt like i could have eaten that salted caramel ice cream forever, probably because the salt balanced out the sweetness.

now i could go for either a grilled peanut butter sandwich or some African peanut stew.

those nut rolls are gross.

Will probably also have a banana in like an hour.

i've had
coffee
two slices of crustless quiche (spinach + cheddar, one for breakfast and one for lunch)
apple
half of a gross cookie
piece of orange-cardamom cake

Ha, I think maybe I have a low tolerance for butter? I never even liked it on rolls/bread until adulthood. And buttercream frosting is too much for me sometimes; I have a hard time enjoying some cupcakes because of it.

jaymc, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 21:36 (sixteen years ago)

i even have some italian sausage and mushrooms, this "burrito" is going to be dope

Jordan, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 21:41 (sixteen years ago)

There is a guy here at work who appears to have the same lunch every day (he eats in the kitchen while reading the newspaper): a sandwich (not sure what kind), a carton of milk, and a Tupperware container filled with apple slices, spinach leaves, and almonds. I go back and forth between admiring his healthiness and finding it all incredibly depressing.

jaymc, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 21:43 (sixteen years ago)

i was thinking of moody's.

They don't have TVs there, do they?

I've been invited to an election night party but am not sure if I will go or not. May depend on when Kr and I get back from Iowa.

jaymc, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

yeah they do have TVs there!

La Lechera, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

They've got a TV right inside the front door. I watched part of Mr. 3000, starring Bernie Mac, on that TV.

The Neo-Futurists are having something election night -- I may go to that, but if not am down for whatever.

W/r/t election night: Jenny emailed me something about a big (really big) to-do in Grant Park. I would like to do that.

Today I ate:

tea 9 a.m. (I know, I know - I'm out of coffee and had to use Luzianne)
macaroni salad 12:00 noon
Whole Foods salad (ft. mixed greens, bacon, blue chz, bell peppers)
Cinnamon Life w/ 1%
5 Wheat Thins (ran out ;__;)

The heat is not on in my apartment and I'm cold.

hey u guys im co-djing a big loft/dance party (probably v. big) this saturday nite if anyone is interested. it will basically be classic disco and hipster-y disco (i lean towards the former but u know). if anyone's interested i can email them the flier.

dont mean to sound impersonal nor that i use this board for self-promotional purposes so i will say that ive been a long-time MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP fan and i totally agree that vanilla > chocolate and have always thought so - however i did tend to be a sucker for fudgsicles (sp jaymc?) as a kid.

im actually not in chi at the moment (volunteering for O in ohio) but if its as cold there as it is here, <3 fall

joe 40oz (deej), Wednesday, 22 October 2008 03:21 (sixteen years ago)

Since there is a pizza thread on ILX right now, I should probably admit that I've been to the Chicago branch of Ian's maybe four or five times now, and I've been kind of underwhelmed. What I can't tell is whether it's objectively not as good as the Madison branch, or whether the difference is being drunk at 1 AM vs. grabbing a slice for dinner before seeing a show at iO.

jaymc, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

^ challenging opinion

i value the one time we went to ian's in madison as an experience but i'd really rather have regular pizza or regular mac and cheese than mac and cheese pizza again. sorry jordan.

Huge but deceptively unfilling after one slice. Maybe a slice and an apple would do the trick. I love a lunchtime slice there with the good daylight and a booth and the NY Times.

There's a Potbelly right on that corner. There's Pastoral, around the corner on Lake, which has fancy cheese sandwiches, I think. There's other OK fast foodish stuff (Jimmy Johns, Chipotle) within a few blocks.

Jordan, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

I know the point of DDPP is that it's a space for women to dance in a "safe" environment, without feeling judged, etc. etc. -- but the idea of a weekly dance party where the participants pick the playlists each week is so awesome, I wish there was a coed version.

jaymc, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

John and I promise we won't grind into strangers from behind on the dance floor if we can come.

happy bday kenan

joe 40oz (deej), Thursday, 23 October 2008 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

thank you. This is a weird birthday for me -- for one thing, I forgot it altogether, but also it's messing with my head. 34 is not supposed to be a milestone or anything, but I swear I feel WAY older saying I'm 34 than I do saying I'm 33. Maybe I set up 35 as some big thing in my head, and now that 33 blew right the hell past me, I'm worried 34 will go even faster, and ther I'll be, 35 years old, not an excuse in the world. Sigh.

Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse (kenan), Thursday, 23 October 2008 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe what I really want is an excuse. That's a depressing thought.

The Messiah of Edgewater. Get closer to Uptown and you'll have some competition.

There's one guy, usually at the Sheridan/Foster corner but sometimes elsewhere, who talks about God and all non-stop and you can barely tell what he's saying and man is he hoarse. But I think he's only got south of Foster locked down.

Quick! I need a message! Doesn't have to be inspiring, who cares, the economy is tanking... maybe I will preach the gospel of public urination. I was arrested for that once, and I sincerely feel I was wrongly charged. "Indecent exposure"? To who, this wall? So yeah, I can rant about that.

Jordan, Friday, 24 October 2008 16:06 (sixteen years ago)

*Pizza subs and cheesesteaks excluded.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Friday, 24 October 2008 16:11 (sixteen years ago)

There's lots of panini that involve grilled eggplant or tomato or roasted red peppers or what-have-you without getting shredded lettuce and mayo involved.

jaymc, Friday, 24 October 2008 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

I had one not too long ago that had onions, tomatoes, red peppers, artichokes, and some giardinera-type stuff. And cheese, lots of it. It ruled.

Eggplant is sometimes okay (I love baba ganoush, for example) but if it's not okay, it is SO NOT OKAY that I generally just avoid it unless I know for sure it is coming from a reliable source and prepared in a way that I know I enjoy. I'll go along to get along with artichokes on pizza, too. I don't really hate these foods so much as find them unpleasant and so I usually don't seek them out. I do honestly hate hot lettuce, though. That's just wrong.

You'll like it, Jenny, if you like scrambled eggs and cheddar and bacon and warm toasted bread.

I like those things a lot.

where in indiana?

I have no idea! I might end up going to Wisconsin. It all depends on which bus my union sticks me on tomorrow morning (at 8 am lolsob).

Thanks, horseshoe and John. I'm pretty good at not taking these things personally. (I phone banked from Planned Parenthood last Tuesday - calling random houses and telling them you are a volunteer with BABY MURDERERS R US and were wondering of you could count on their vote for Obama was good practice.) I generally like talking to strangers, too. I just haven't gone door to door for, well, anything since I was in high school and sold candy to raise money for new band uniforms.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Friday, 24 October 2008 18:15 (sixteen years ago)

one thing i wasn't prepared for: a lot of people, and i don't think just McCain supporters, get squirrely when a stranger asks who they're voting for. i don't really know how to avoid this, other than just seeming nice and noncrazy.

horseshoe, Friday, 24 October 2008 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

okay it sounds like you'll be great at it, Jenny! the girl i canvassed with used to be a social worker and as part of her job, she would have to go to people's houses and give them notice that they were going to be investigated for child abuse. Obama canvassing was small potatoes to her, i think.

horseshoe, Friday, 24 October 2008 18:18 (sixteen years ago)

They'll probably pair you up with someone else, which is helpful. Kr and I took opposite sides of the street to maximize the number of doors we knocked on, but we were able to discuss strategy along the way, and occasionally we both went to the same house if we knew it was going to be a tough sell.

jaymc, Friday, 24 October 2008 18:19 (sixteen years ago)

are any of y'all getting out the vote in Indiana on election day?

No, but I am answering phones at the Election Protection hotline. Alas, when I signed up, the only shift left was the 5:30 AM to 8:30 AM shift. LOLSOOOOOOOOOOOOB

xp - Nice I can do. I'll work on the non-crazy. I guess this means I shouldn't sport my hockey mask and chainsaw.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Friday, 24 October 2008 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

What kinds of questions did people ask you? Did you manage to change anybody's mind? If somebody is all like "MCCAIN 4EVA" do you just move on and try to find an undecided person?

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Friday, 24 October 2008 18:21 (sixteen years ago)

Other things to keep in mind: If someone says they're definitely voting for McCain, it's not really worth it to try to change their mind. Just thank them and be on your merry way. If someone says they're undecided, suppress your "HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU BE UNDECIDED?!?!" urge and instead smile and say, "Well, you still have a few days left, and I realize it's a tough decision, but I believe that Barack Obama is the only candidate who can truly bring change, blah blah blah."

jaymc, Friday, 24 October 2008 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, definitely move on when someone's like "McCain4eva."

i don't think we changed anyone's mind, frankly, but i think i'd be better at talking points now that i've had a little practice. we were trained to talk economy, so we did, but people tended to ask about their pet issues when they asked at all.

i also don't think we changed anyone's mind because i don't believe anyone's actually undecided at this point.

horseshoe, Friday, 24 October 2008 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

lol xpost

horseshoe, Friday, 24 October 2008 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

The phone banking I did was designed to target undecided voters, but even then, the goal was quantity over quality. If somebody was undecided, we'd give them a little three-line blurb about how Obama is all about equal pay and affordable healthcare for women, while John McCain totally sucks, and then say, "Knowing that Obama is totally awesome, can we count on your vote for Obama in November?" And regardless of what they said next, we would thank them and end the call. So there wasn't a lot of persuasion, you know?

suppress your "HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU BE UNDECIDED?!?!" urge

I'm going to hand them David Sedaris's New Yorker piece that implicitly compares John McCain to a plate of shit with broken glass in it.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Friday, 24 October 2008 18:26 (sixteen years ago)

will they let us go around together?

I don't see why not.

I'm not sure if I changed anyone's mind. Or at least if I did, it wasn't on the spot. I wasn't really used to having to persuade people about Obama, so I just tried to be polite and friendly and asked them if they wouldn't mind looking at Obama's campaign literature.

What I should've done was ask people what their issues were, which I could then try to use to advocate for Obama (assuming I knew what O's position was).

Most people aren't really itching for a big ol' political debate on their front porch, though.

jaymc, Friday, 24 October 2008 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, if there is a quantifiable effect to this kind of canvassing, maybe it's showing undecided voters that Obama has nice, motivated people working for him?

horseshoe, Friday, 24 October 2008 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

If people say they are undecided I'll be like, "Well, Barack Obama smiled when he heard me mention your name."

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Friday, 24 October 2008 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks for the info! I feel somewhat better equipped for this, although I am honestly kind of dreading it.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Friday, 24 October 2008 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i was dreading it, too. but while we were actually doing it, it was fun. the first lady who we got an answer from screamed at us, but she was an outlier.

horseshoe, Friday, 24 October 2008 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

I felt VERY awkward about asking people who they're voting for. What I did was go off-script and say that I'm on a mission to ferret out unregistered voters. "Are you or is anyone else in this house not yet registered to vote? Oh good, you're all registered. Have you decided who you're voting for?"

That would not work now b/c registration day is done gone, but maybe you can think of something else?

I did not enjoy canvassing.

"Womanizer" sounds fine -- five-year-olds will like the bounce, teens can sing it on the bus, clubby folks can run onto the dance floor during that intro.

I haven't decided about "Womanizer" yet. I do think it's interesting how a lot of pop music these days is very electro/clubby. "I Kissed a Girl" is built on those same synths.

jaymc, Friday, 24 October 2008 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

i think that's what i like about it; i imagine it sounds like the inside of britney spears's head.

No, I've gone on record as saying that while I find the lyrics and general attitude of "I Kissed a Girl" to be highly questionable, the song itself is very appealing. You're right about the beat, too.

All politics aside, I dislike the song "I Kissed a Girl" intensely.

tit deep in abomination (Jenny), Friday, 24 October 2008 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

it's all ripping off timbaland ripping off electro/club stuff

Possibly. But I'm also thinking of stuff like Ne-Yo's "Closer":

I mean, it does sort of remind me of a Timbaland production (like Omarion's "Ice Box"), but I can't imagine Timbaland ever doing that much of a straight, four-to-the-floor beat.

jaymc, Friday, 24 October 2008 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

A bizarre formula has struck the Billboard charts like smallpox: Mix one part “Tainted Love” with one part nanny-nanny-boo-boo school-yard taunt. Every hit now seems to stomp along to the same thumping midtempo electro-beat -- a cadence made for stripper poles -- while a panting pop star coos a nagging nursery-rhyme-like hook on top.

I think Kate Perry want to annoy you guys with those lyrics. She's all so-what. Same way with "Never Say Never": either you're in her head and into the fantasy, or you're on the edge of the dance floor shaking your head.

4 my people? old school joint? the way i are?

Only one I know of those is "The Way I Are," and even though it's a straight beat, the arpeggiated synths kind of shift the rhythmic focus. Also possible that the difference I'm noticing is "SexyBack"/"The Way I Are" at 115-117 BPM vs. "Closer" at 126 BPM.

jaymc, Friday, 24 October 2008 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

joe 40oz (deej), Monday, 27 October 2008 02:47 (sixteen years ago)

I snowed for about 3 minutes. It was little pellety stuff.

Guys, I did something I'm sort of ashamed of. A guy was backing up from a driveway in my street, and he hit a parked car (which left a dent and scratch) then took off. I took down his license plate number and decided to leave a note for the driver later (I was on my way to the laundromat). The driver had parked his car around the corner, where he got out, and said, "Amigo, is there a problem?" I told him that I saw him hit the car and that I planned on leaving a note for the driver; he walked away, mumbling something about not seeing any car.

Later at he came into the laundromat, looking very nervous and upset. He told me that he was a recent immigrant from Africa and that he was worried about getting in trouble with the police. I felt bad, so I told him to forget about it, and I wouldn't leave a note. He pulled out $20, which I refused repeatedly, but on his way out, he left the bill on a table.

I feel like a bully!

The $20 is going to BHO.

Has "conservative" one of those loaded words for you guys, something that you'll now avoid at all costs?

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Monday, 27 October 2008 15:58 (sixteen years ago)

No, you raise a good point, Jesse. I was halfway out the door before I remembered that I hadn't researched judges, and the CBA was the only bar association I remembered that made judicial recommendations.

I don't know how I feel about the public voting on judges, though. I mean, I'm in favor of democracy, of course, but most people in the voting booth aren't going to have any idea who they should retain or not, and the rest of us only know because we place implicit trust in someone else (a bar association) to tell us. The number of people who are making their decisions based on direct knowledge of each particular judge has got to be extremely small and limited to the legal community.

jaymc, Monday, 27 October 2008 16:04 (sixteen years ago)

you don't have to vote on judges, right? i certainly don't feel like i have any educated basis for those decisions

jaymc, Monday, 27 October 2008 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

Has "conservative" one of those loaded words for you guys, something that you'll now avoid at all costs?

Not for me. One of the things I admire about Obama is that I think he will govern with some measure of fiscal cautiousness. That probably reads like a joke to a lot of right-wingers accustomed to mocking "tax-and-spend" liberals (and especially with all this "socialism" talk now), but I think O's temperament suggests that he's not as willing to plunge the country into a gaping deficit the way, say, the Bush administration has.

jaymc, Monday, 27 October 2008 16:22 (sixteen years ago)

man I totally forgot the word "become" between "conservative" and "one" there

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Monday, 27 October 2008 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

Also, I agree wrt Obama. Judgeships might be a little different though, as they're not exactly in a position to influence too much in the way of spending. Or maybe they are and I am just ig'nant.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Monday, 27 October 2008 16:25 (sixteen years ago)

So does anyone have any idea about how insane it will be to get out of Grant Park and back to Evanston next Tuesday night? I'm concerned about 5-6 hour waits to get an El train back out of downtown.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 27 October 2008 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

Has "conservative" ((become)) one of those loaded words for you guys, something that you'll now avoid at all costs?

Almost the opposite. I don't think I understood what a conservative really was until I lived through so many years of the principles being beaten and left to die by the road. And it was, and the GOP will be redefining itself MASSIVELY after this election, and if what comes back out of its spiritual time in the desert is a bit more like traditional conservatism, there'll be things to talk about, for the first time that's I've ever been around for.

As far as judgeships go, I guess I would still rather support a judge who is considered liberal, knowing nothing else about them, on the grounds that they are more likely to share my values.

Joe Biden:

When I got to the United States Senate and went on the Judiciary Committee as a young lawyer, I was of the view and had been trained in the view that the only thing that mattered was whether or not a nominee appointed, suggested by the president had a judicial temperament, had not committed a crime of moral turpitude, and was -- had been a good student.

And it didn't take me long -- it was hard to change, but it didn't take me long, but it took about five years for me to realize that the ideology of that judge makes a big difference.

That's why I led the fight against Judge Bork. Had he been on the court, I suspect there would be a lot of changes that I don't like and the American people wouldn't like, including everything from Roe v. Wade to issues relating to civil rights and civil liberties.

And so that -- that -- that was one of the intellectual changes that took place in my career as I got a close look at it. And that's why I was the first chairman of the Judiciary Committee to forthrightly state that it matters what your judicial philosophy is. The American people have a right to understand it and to know it.

But I did change on that, and -- and I'm glad I did.

jaymc, Monday, 27 October 2008 16:58 (sixteen years ago)

Jenny (and other legal beagles) drilled it into my head that voting for judges is one of the most effective ways to make your vote count. B/c so few people even bother with that section, your vote counts for more. Plus local judges have a direct impact on daily life in a way that is close to home.

Therefore, vote for judges. Dot com.

Oh - does anyone have opinions on Water Reclamation candidates? I figure that's a pretty important position.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Monday, 27 October 2008 17:09 (sixteen years ago)

My biggest regret coming out of the booth was that I hadn't done any research on some of the Greens running for state offices. I'm not voting for Cynthia McKinney at a national level or anything, but I don't think it would be a bad idea to have third-party representation in some smaller electoral offices. I just don't know if anyone is qualified or not.

jaymc, Monday, 27 October 2008 17:12 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, I just got that jvc was asking a real question. For this sort of event you could probably risk being a little sleepy the next day if it's really important. Also, you could try circumventing the downtown portion of the Red line by walking to Halsted or something and taking a bus north to another stop.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Monday, 27 October 2008 17:15 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks Jesse. I know there isn't really a good answer for that, I just tend to avoid those huge events down in the Loop and I'm trying to figure out how long I need to plan for getting back out of there later that night. I'm just picturing the night I ended up down in Grant Park the night of a Dave Matthews concert at Soldier Field times ten.

several xposts My big idea in the booth was, let's get a majority everywhere possible. That, and apart from Obama, Durbin, and Jan Schakowsky (9th District REPRASENT!) I don't know shit about who I'm voting for around here. At least in Texas there were always notorious bastards, so even though they always won, you at least knew who to vote against.

Man, I want to go to Grant Park, but on the other hand I reaaaaly don't want to. 5-6 hour waits? Really? That sounds awful.

If I do go, and if the trains are inaccessible, I will probably either walk to Halsted and take the bus to Addison. Or if Halsted bus is fucked too, maybe go to UIC-Halsted Blue line and take it north to Irving Park and take a bus east on Lawrence.

Don't quote me on the 5-6 hours, but that night I was stuck with the DMB crowd took about 2 and a half hours to squeeze on an outbound train. I'm just imagining this to be a little worse and, given past experiences, I doubt the CTA will do anything to allow for increased ridership that night.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Monday, 27 October 2008 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

I always thought of Hum as an alt-rock one-hit wonder until I met Jas0n Hendr1x, whose enthusiastic fandom gave me the impression that they have a significant reputation beyond "Stars." Having still not heard anything besides that song, what's so great about them?

jaymc, Monday, 27 October 2008 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

don't feel bad - i had to go to youtube to find out what the excitement was - and i found that song, but i barely remember it. when were they growing this enthusiastic fanbase? where the fart was i?

i believe you

La Lechera, Monday, 27 October 2008 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

No srsly though they had this nerdy, techy, spacey, distorto-effects-laden sound that just resonated with me (and a lot of my friends) for some reason. They only have 3 albums but they're all solid as hell. They're one of those bands that took (seemingly) forever between albums and called it quits when they realized they got too big for their britches, so to speak (their last record was on RCA).

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Monday, 27 October 2008 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

this thread has convinced me not to go to grant park on election night. Perhaps better to hole up with a bottle of scotch? I suppose I also need to vote early...

askance johnson, Monday, 27 October 2008 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

NB I have all 3 albums if anyone wants to hear more. I could make a mini-mix or something.

I still remember seeing their video for "Comin' Home" on whatever the MTV show was where they'd have people in to watch a couple of videos and then debate on which was best, and that video got into rotation on MTV. I'm pretty sure they didn't win.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Monday, 27 October 2008 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

Dan kinda nailed it for me, but they were one of the first bands I discovered when I was a freshman down in Champaign. I couldn't even tell you how many times I saw them when I was going to school down there.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 27 October 2008 19:56 (sixteen years ago)

And I've never seen them! They came to Green Bay one time and I fucking missed it.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Monday, 27 October 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

Being in Grant Park will be like being at Kennedy's inauguration. Still...

Eazy, Monday, 27 October 2008 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

I have a hard time imagining $65 worth of good.

Mozarella sticks. Think about it. (kenan), Monday, 27 October 2008 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

I also remember Hum as being a one-hit alterna-band. Actually, I remember this review from some magazine (Magnet?) where the reviewer derided Hum for taking the "guitar innovations" of sonic youth and turning them pedestrian. Or something. But I have noted a lot of love for them out there, so they're probably a lot better than I used to think.

askance johnson, Monday, 27 October 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

Shit Dan, not to rub it in or anything... but seeing them live is how I completely fell for them. Awesome, awesome live show. I remember they headlined a long day of Champaign bands in a local park - I think Menthol and Poster Children were both on the bill too - but they came on just as it got dark and blew everyone away.

(x-post)

Yeah, $65 dampens my enthusiasm quite a bit. Guessing thats because its NYE and, for some reason, even shitty bands believe its their right to double or triple their asking price because of that particular day.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 27 October 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

I do imagine I will regret it if I don't go to grant park, like people in the future will be all like "you were in chicago when b.o. won and you were sitting home like a lame-o??" But then again I probably am a lame-o, so this fits.

askance johnson, Monday, 27 October 2008 20:02 (sixteen years ago)

sisut, Monday, 27 October 2008 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

Mozarella sticks. Think about it. (kenan), Monday, 27 October 2008 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

lol

Classic, classic, classic. I'm a bit biased as I was going to school in Champaign during Hum's prime and got to witness the awesome live presence many, many times. I still get a major buzz from listening to any song off of You'd Prefer an Astronaut, although if pressed to admit it I'd have to say Downward is Heavenward was a stronger overall effort. I regret never picking up their first album (the name of which escapes me now) when it was all over Champaign as I'm not sure how hard it is to find. There was a lot of good music in that city those days - Poster Children, Menthol, Sarge, Braid - but Hum was and still is my favorite.

La Lechera, Monday, 27 October 2008 20:22 (sixteen years ago)

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Monday, 27 October 2008 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

It does, but I gotta say that "Iron Clad Lou" is by far my favorite.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 27 October 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

Of course I've been listening to Hum for about a half hour now and I'm remembering the other reason I really liked them: they can be really really heavy, but not in a metal way. Their (awesome) drumming and guitar sounds mesh very well but they're not un-melodic like a lot of the other heavy bands back then. They're kind of like a engineering nerd version of Smashing Pumpkins circa Siamese Dream.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Monday, 27 October 2008 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

i saw the poster children at cmj one year and had one of their later albums but was never really that into them for whatever reason

Oh shit, yes. That's actually a pretty fantastic way to describe their sound.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 27 October 2008 20:28 (sixteen years ago)

But it might put off those people averse to the Pumpkins. Imagine the drums and guitars from the heavier tracks on Siamese Dream without the Corgan histrionics.

1. I would like to be in Grant Park when BHO wins. Katie- I just had a wonderful idea! You could park in my work's parking lot, which is as far away as your work, but still far enough (Jackson/Peoria).

2. I don't want to be in Grant Park b/c it's going to be cold, crowded, and tiresome.
2.a. I could comfort myself with the notion that as a jaded big city person, I want to stay away from the b.s.
2.a.1 That's not really the case.

3. Eric, I suspect that T's will be crowded, but I could be wrong.

happy go lucky sounds good but possibly depressing. rachel getting married sounds interesting. but i have issues paying $$$ to go to the theater to see movies about people talking, especially ones shot on digital video. i'll see them on dvd if i remember.

askance johnson, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

I just prefer seeing movies on the big screen; the only things I see on DVD are movies I never got around to seeing in the theater, or movies I was only mildly interested in. (Although, in what might be in the inverse of you, Nick, I'll see something in the theater that I'm not super-excited about if I know that DVD won't do it justice -- e.g., The Dark Knight.)

Also, I've heard that Happy-Go-Lucky isn't anywhere as depressing as you might expect from someone whose most recent films are All or Nothing and Vera Drake; I'm sort of expecting the same kind of wistful humor as Leigh's Career Girls and Life Is Sweet.

I am waiting eagerly for that Swedish vampire flick to make it to chicago

Is this the one that played at the film festival? Because that looked v. intriguing.

I have not seen Duel, but I will check it out.

Reanimator is pure undiluted genius.

Mozarella sticks. Think about it. (kenan), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 18:08 (sixteen years ago)

I remember I was afraid to see Reanimator for a long time when I was a wee one, because all I ever heard about it is that it was shockingly violent. Nobody ever told me that it's hilarious. The media failed me!

Mozarella sticks. Think about it. (kenan), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

i saw the flaming lips movie the other night. it is bad but has a couple of funny parts and some decent DIY set design.

Jordan, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 18:10 (sixteen years ago)

reanimator is incredibly gory (probably the second most gory movie i've ever seen, after the also awesome "brain dead/dead alive" (different titles for international and u.s. versions) by peter jackson) and also funny. actually dead alive is pretty funny too. it would make a good double feature.

the only movie i can think of right now that i'm excited about seeing is aranofsky's 'the wrestler' starring mickey rourke but i bet sarah won't see it with me

metametadata (n/a), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

jon, that is, in fact, the vampire movie I was referring to. I didn't know it was at the film fest! Though I assume it will get a regular run here soon -- it's playing in new york and la as we speak.

Indiana Jones was abysmally bad, and I even entered it with lower than low expectations.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, invariably the movies I most want to see at the festival end up playing in Chicago within a few months, if not weeks, anyway.

xpost the south park episode about it is especially vile (and funny)

Mozarella sticks. Think about it. (kenan), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

we just watched a hilariously bad movie about a killer baby called It's Alive

i have issues with going to see movies that are all about (and I mean ALL) families and feelings and talking. just not my thing. rachel getting married is like a nightmare combination of those elements. also those movies always make me feel depressed and bad about myself, so why bother.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 18:48 (sixteen years ago)

i can't stand books like that but i think i might like movies like that.

Jordan, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

I like movie about families. The Godfather, for instance.

You guys - I dug into my walls when re-wiring and I found that the interior walls are filled (at least up to my neck's height) with shards of mortar. It's really weird. Would there be any reason to fill walls with debris? Sound-proofing? Or maybe it's just b/c my house is falling apart.

name this interviewee:

One thing we realized was that good-time rock bands that drink and party don't make it-- we had twenty examples of bands in Chicago to teach us what not to do. We made up our minds to learn every aspect of the business so that when things did start to happen for us, they wouldn't backfire and blow up in our faces a year of five years down the road.

We controlled everything, all the promotion, merchandise....I think the reason we come across as a care-free band is because we're so comfortable with the business side. All the money we made in the early days went back into the band bank account--every cent of it. And we used it to record a thiry-song demo over the course of three months. The owner of The Metro got it into the hands of it -------, who's now our manager, and who gave copies of the tape to people. Suddenly there was this huge buzz about us. A lot of people in Chicago accused us of not paying our dues, but it was just a case of us being smart and not playing trash gigs. They don't know I lived in the dumpiest part of Chicago for three years and got mugged three times!

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 23:52 (sixteen years ago)

i was a big sp fan back in the day but nowadays yeah siamese dream is pretty much all i'll rep for. lol at jimmy chamberlain, who was a bad enough heroin addict that billy corgan kicked him out of the band despite him being the only other band member with musical talent, dissing "good time rock bands who drink and party." chamberlain is a fucking awesome drummer though, sarah put on gish a few weeks ago and all i could hear was his kick-ass drumming

Siamese Dream
In Utero
Come On Pilgrim
Star (by Belly)

La Lechera, Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:12 (sixteen years ago)

Well, it is the last day of early voting.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

yeah theres been a line outside my polling spot all day

joe 40oz (deej), Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i feel stupid for waiting
i wanted to increase the drama and...it worked

La Lechera, Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:14 (sixteen years ago)

I just procrastinated. Booooo. The good news is that I can probably be as late as I want on Tuesday and no-one will notice, since the lawyers will likely be volunteering as legal observers.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

I'm gonna go to that Abbey Pub Halloweekend show tonight.

jaymc, Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

Kumail on why NYC is better than Chicago:
http://www.timeout.com/chicago/articles/comedy/68404/bust-a-move

jaymc, Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:36 (sixteen years ago)

we might go to the show at the empty bottle tomorrow: detholz, aleks and the drummer, hood internet

metametadata (n/a), Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

metametadata (n/a), Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

metametadata (n/a), Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, I know, I'll post that in the "NYC is for sellouts" thread.

jaymc, Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

I've just spent about 2 hours training someone to do a portion of my job, and I want to shoot myself in the face.

^^^important article before voting

joe 40oz (deej), Thursday, 30 October 2008 21:22 (sixteen years ago)

CBA told me to vote no on Hopkins, Clay, and Lewis but gave Pietrucha a qualified "qualified."

jaymc, Thursday, 30 October 2008 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck i went back and the line was just as long. surely --SURELY! -- it can't be that long at 6am on Tuesday? if it is, i will just leave work early and deal with going later. they have to let me out of work, right? i was not gonna stand there for three hours in uncomfortable shoes without something to read.

La Lechera, Thursday, 30 October 2008 21:33 (sixteen years ago)

hahahah john

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Thursday, 30 October 2008 21:56 (sixteen years ago)

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Thursday, 30 October 2008 21:56 (sixteen years ago)

you troll

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Thursday, 30 October 2008 21:56 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, I know. I think part of what I found funny about the article was that I started out taking it seriously, like Kumail was really making the case for NYC being better, and then the humor was in the relief to find out that was not the case. Also imagining some of those lines in his voice.

jaymc, Thursday, 30 October 2008 21:59 (sixteen years ago)

IlXoring live from a two hour wait at the library in Logan :-(

joe 40oz (deej), Thursday, 30 October 2008 22:23 (sixteen years ago)

horseshoe, Thursday, 30 October 2008 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

horseshoe, Thursday, 30 October 2008 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

I'd just wait til Tues but i'm going to in.

joe 40oz (deej), Thursday, 30 October 2008 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

metametadata (n/a), Thursday, 30 October 2008 22:35 (sixteen years ago)

I got in line at 440. Still in line.

joe 40oz (deej), Thursday, 30 October 2008 23:23 (sixteen years ago)

ok so that took approx 2:45 mins

joe 40oz (deej), Friday, 31 October 2008 00:41 (sixteen years ago)

I LOLed at the "I know..." part of John's post.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Friday, 31 October 2008 01:17 (sixteen years ago)

Stick with it, it gets interesting at around the 1/4 mark.

Jordan, Friday, 31 October 2008 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

They do make a mean bretzel. I should go there more often. I always tell myself it's too expensive, but it's about the same as Cosi.

jaymc, Friday, 31 October 2008 17:08 (sixteen years ago)

I should have met up with you, Nick. And with Sarah. And Jenny and John. And Jeff maybe.

They are testing the fire alarms here and it is very jarring.

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Friday, 31 October 2008 17:12 (sixteen years ago)

i'm not going for a little bit, i'm still wrapping up work at home and then i have to catch the train downtown to eat and go to harold washington library for SERIOUS LIBRARY SCHOOL RESEARCH

metametadata (n/a), Friday, 31 October 2008 17:14 (sixteen years ago)

another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Friday, 31 October 2008 17:32 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't have to work today (lol impending layoffs) but I had volunteered to make chili for the annual Halloween party, so I came in anyway... aaand now it looks like I'm going to do some work. A sucker is me.

Campus report 2008:

Eazy, Friday, 31 October 2008 18:02 (sixteen years ago)

Mozarella sticks. Think about it. (kenan), Friday, 31 October 2008 18:08 (sixteen years ago)

I can't clear the full queue in my phone, but will post a picture when I can. Just think puffy blonde hair and khaki trenchcoat for Astley.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Friday, 31 October 2008 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

oh I forgot to say. Loved it, and thanks. Great stuff, made me feel like I'd missed something a long time ago that I'd have been better off knowing.

big louie moilolnen (dan m), Friday, 31 October 2008 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

I forgot to download the Hum stuff -- I'll do it tonight.

That guy has the right physical look for Astley. Slash is missing his top hat, though.
