Brokaw selecting the questions from among those provided by the people in the audience is really just a way for him to essentially write the questions and pretend not to have done so, right?(and he likes McCain, so there's going to be tons of bullshit questions, isn't it so?)

the other thing is that that whole "presidential seal" thing only makes sense to mad right-wingers and politics nerds. mccain made a joke about it in the 1st debate and you could hear it clunking unregarded in living rooms across america. (but the guy who wrote the line was probably backstage anxiously monitoring malkin and the corner for recognition of his zinger.) there's a point where the delusions encouraged by the self-containment of right-wing media become a political liability -- like, a false belief that most of the country is up on the fake outrages of the week, or shares the same automatic horror at the words "community organizer."
― tipsy mothra, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

Producer: How's it going Mr. Brokaw?

i'm still kind of worried about the acknowledged dip into negative tactics from the democrats. fight back is obviously the dukakis and gore sanctioned presidential meme of 2008, but it seems like people are actually on board with recognising the republicans' as being a dirty campaign, and obama's as being in reference to the issues. if they're gonna dig up old mccain iran funding shit, it should be to illustrate the if-you-have-a-career-in-politics, you're gonna encounter some foes, obama is a standup guy kind of thing, rather than your past is worse than my past. is that unrealistic?

From Chicago Sun-Times’ Lynn Sweet:–The questions will be culled from a group of 100 to 150 uncommitted likely voters in the audience and another one-third to come via the Internet. Brokaw selects which questions to ask from written queries submitted prior to the debate.–The Gallup Organization makes sure the questioners reflect the demographic makeup of the nation.–An audience member isn’t allowed to switch questions and will not be allowed a follow-up either. His or her microphone will be turned off after the question is read and a camera shot will only be shown of the person asking — not reacting.–The moderator may not ask followups or make comments.–McCain and Obama will be provided with director’s chairs, but they’re also allowed to stand. They can’t roam past their “designated area” marked on the stage and are not supposed to ask each other direct questions.

McCain won't use Ayres to attack Obama, Byron York sez.
Just talked to someone who knows McCain well about what McCain needs to accomplish in Nashville tonight. "Everybody says John needs a knockout," this person told me. "He doesn't. He's got 28 days left. He needs a strong and steady performance. He needs to be very empathetic, as he has been in many, many town meetings, and he needs to use it as a way to pivot to issues that the voters most care about — to run a negative campaign against Obama, but on those issues....the Ayers thing, in this kind of election, seems old and irrelevant."
Yesterday, I talked to a member of the McCain team, who told me, "I think the point of the town hall debate is to connect with the American people. Our first goal is to show that John McCain gets it." By "it," the person meant: "That he understands the concerns of the American people better than Barack Obama does."
Maybe I'm all wrong, but I don't expect a rock-'em-sock-'em night. The subject of Ayers will come up if a member of the town hall audience, or moderator Tom Brokaw, brings it up, but after talking to Team McCain, I would be very surprised if McCain himself said anything about it unless someone else brought it up.

so wait, if they hammer at the ayers / wright accusations for a week and the numbers still refuse to budge, what do they do? will they run with that line until the election day, or will they change tactics? i just ask because there doesn't seem to be any even non-viable media strategies left

So that story isn't going to anywhere.

Adler Planetarium, to support replacement of its projector and related equipment, $3,000,000
One of its most popular attractions and teaching tools at the Adler Planetarium is the Sky Theater. The projection equipment in this theater is 40 years old, and is no longer supported with parts or service by the manufacturer. It has begun to fail, leaving the theater dark and groups of school students and other interested museum-goers without this very valuable and exciting learning experience.

I don't want to alarm anyone. But you should be aware there's a significant chance we'll see some real tire-swinging from tonight's moderator Tom Brokaw. Brokaw is a pro with a long and distinguished career. But he does appear to have a real thing for the tire-swing. As the Times reported at the end of September, in recent months Brokaw has served as NBC's emissary to the McCain campaign "to assure the candidate's aides that -- despite some negative on-air commentary by Mr. Olbermann in particular -- Mr. McCain could still get a fair shake from NBC News. Mr. Brokaw said he had been told by a senior McCain aide, whom he did not name, that the campaign had been reluctant to accept an NBC representative as one of the moderators of the three presidential debates -- until his name was invoked."
And remember that it was Brokaw, during the Democratic convention, who went on at some length how Bill Clinton and all Democrats had to be really careful about criticizing John McCain because of his time as a POW ...
Again, I'm not saying Brokaw's some hack. He's definitely. not. But he does seem to have remained captive to the McCain myth, long after many of his generational pundit peers have hopped off the tire-swing for good.

Well. As I was committing to a relationship, Andy McCarthy posts this:
You Guys Are Nuts [Andy McCarthy]
We have a disaster here — which is what you should expect when you delegate a non-conservative to make the conservative (nay, the American) case. We can parse it eight ways to Sunday, but I think the commentary is missing the big picture.
Here's what Obama needed to do tonight: Convince the country that he was an utterly safe, conventional, centrist politician who may have leftward leanings but will do the right thing when the crunch comes.
Now, as the night went along, did you get the impression that Obama comes from the radical Left? Did you sense that he funded Leftist causes to the tune of tens of millions of dollars? Would you have guessed that he's pals with a guy who brags about bombing the Pentagon? Would you have guessed that he helped underwrite raging anti-Semites? Would you come away thinking, "Gee, he's proposing to transfer nearly a trillion dollars of wealth to third-world dictators through the UN"?
Nope. McCain didn't want to go there. So Obama comes off as just your average Center-Left politician. Gonna raise your taxes a little, gonna negotiate reasonably with America's enemies; gonna rely on our very talented federal courts to fight terrorists and solve most of America's problems; gonna legalize millions of hard-working illegal immigrants.
McCain? He comes off as Center-Right .. or maybe Center-Left ... but, either way, deeply respectful of Obama despite their policy quibbles.
Great. Memo to McCain Campaign: Someone is either a terrorist sympathizer or he isn't; someone is either disqualified as a terrorist sympathizer or he's qualified for public office. You helped portray Obama as a clealy qualified presidential candidate who would fight terrorists.
If that's what the public thinks, good luck trying to win this thing.
With due respect, I think tonight was a disaster for our side. I'm dumbfounded that no one else seems to think so. Obama did everything he needed to do, McCain did nothing he needed to do. What am I missing?

Late Update: A few readers say the two shook hands right after the conclusion of the debate, at that moment where Brokaw told them they were in the way of his teleprompter. Here's what TPM Reader KP said ...
Hey, i watched the video of the debate. The moment right before Tom Brokaw told them they were in his way, they clearly shook hands vigorously. Then they took a moment to stand side by side for the audience and Brokaw was like, hey move it.
The moment you showed on video was when McCain was obviously presenting his wife to shake Obama's hand.
On the other hand, in the video above, Blitzer seemed to think they had no yet shaken hands.
― joseph sixpack (ice crӕm), Wednesday, 8 October 2008 03:22 (sixteen years ago)

Ross Douthat:
I'd call tonight's debate a draw, which if the dynamic from the first debate holds probably means it was a big win for Obama. I was gratified by the approach McCain took - by the absence of personal attacks (though, yes, the dislike still came through), by the attempt to actually engage with Obama on issues like health care, and yes, by the promise to buy up home mortgages, which was exactly the kind of blatantly panderish thing McCain needs to do if he wants to actually win this thing. (More on this tomorrow.) But Obama was unruffled and consistent - change vs. more of the same, change vs. more of the same, rinse and repeat - and for whatever it's worth the physical and generational contrast between the two men was very striking in this setting, and especially in the early going McCain seemed to me be showing his age as he delivered his answers. He improved as the night went on, but the vigor gap was palpable.
Oh, and everyone who's pointed out this wasn't anything like a real "town hall" meeting is exactly right. They should have just had Tom Brokaw moderate the thing, if this was the tone and format they were looking for. The whole thing had an unpleasant Potemkin feel to it, like the questioners were all afraid of what Brokaw might do to them if they strayed even modestly from the script.

Andy's Right [Lisa Schiffren]
I think McCain put in a very solid performance. But Andy is right that Obama came off as a plausible alternative. Since we have all spent the past few weeks understanding the history and implications of the Obama-Ayers (Khalidi, Said) relationships, that is a tragedy. It would have been awkward to insert that stuff in this format. It would have risked making McCain look oddly hostile and combative If the McCain campaign is serious about winning, they have to get this stuff out, under their own rubric, not that of "friendly" journalists. So they better make some kind of arrangement for a high profile event where he can lay it out. And they had better figure out how to get national coverage, because an 8 minute clip on YouTube doesn't penetrate the national consciousness.
I am listening to Karl Rove blather on right now as if Obama was knocked off his lead. When did that happen?

Mark Hemingway:
Bill Kristol points out that the reason you have a town hall debate is to introduce an element of unconventionality and shake things up. Nearly every question brokaw selected was political Secconal. He's right. Fred Barnes is in agreement and notes that so far the questions asked at a church by Rick Warren were more illuminating than any of the journalist moderated debates since then.

i guess the idea was that mccain likes town hall style events, because his campaign has had such events on the trail -- but as a debate format, it's different, and much less a friendly getting-to-know-you environment and slightly more gladatorial, with the candidates stalking and circling each other.
obama's physical presence was really a stark contrast with mccain, who looked like a doddering old fart, quite frankly

Earmarks | 10 p.m. As in the last debate, Mr. McCain continued to hit Mr. Obama on the issue of earmarks. “He voted for nearly $1 billion in pork barrel earmark projects,” Mr. McCain said. “Including, by the way, $3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in Chicago, Illinois.”
Mr. McCain was referring to an earmark in 2007 that Mr. Obama disclosed in a news release.
Among the requested earmarks Mr. Obama listed for fiscal year 2008: “Adler Planetarium, to support replacement of its projector and related equipment, $3,000,000.”
“One of its most popular attractions and teaching tools at the Adler Planetarium is the Sky Theater,” the statement continued. “The projection equipment in this theater is 40 years old, and is no longer supported with parts or service by the manufacturer. It has begun to fail, leaving the theater dark and groups of school students and other interested museum-goers without this very valuable and exciting learning experience.”
The Adler, founded in 1930, was the first planetarium in the Western hemisphere. On its Web site, it is described as “a recognized leader in science education, with a focus on inspiring young people, particularly women and minorities, to pursue careers in science.” It is
According to an article in The Chicago Tribune in October, it would only be the second time the projector is replaced since the Adler opened in 1930.
“The Zeiss optical projector in Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum’s Sky Theater has been showing the night sky and celestial objects on the theater dome’s inner surface since 1970,” the article said.
The project has already received a $500,000 grant from the Polk Bros. foundation

McCain, who stopped to visit a half-dozen children at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt today, said the presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama has “waged the dirtiest campaign in American history,” and her husband Sen. John McCain will use tonight’s debate to correct the distortions.
“What I have found is that it’s necessary to make sure the American people understand what we have to say, what we stand for as a husband and wife, and what we will do for the American people if we’re lucky enough to be elected,” Cindy McCain said.

I think some of them sincerely believe in the Ayers thing (like Goldberg), and some are sorta going along for the ride. The real problem is that the crazies are driving the ship over there. The more moderate voices (arguably like Derbyshire or Frum) are alienated by Lopez + Goldberg.
― Mordy, Wednesday, 8 October 2008 08:01 (sixteen years ago)
the thing is, even the supposed 'moderate voices' arent really, in that i think there really is a certain amount of socially conservative punativeness about them - their anger about crime and 'society out of control' feels very real. giuliani, despite his supposed social liberalness, fits right into the angry working class pro-police anti-affirmative action thing that really created the reagan coalition
and frum is a part of that - i was watching recently a bloggingheads ep between frum and the author of nixonland, rick perlstein - great discussion btw - and frum argues that lbj's problem was not putting down the riots quickly, letting them fester and go out of control, just hoping they would stop once more liberal civil rights legislation was passed. perlstein stops him right there and mentions how many bodies the (i think it was newark?) police piled up while putting down the riots, and asks frum how many people he thinks the police should have killed.
(perlstein's book relies heavily on the thesis that the rioting was a large part of what turned what would become reagan democrats into nixon democrats shortly after the 1964 senate landslide, and how nixon used the racial resentments to turn things around for the republicans)
so anyway the point of this is that there is still that bond there - its just that 1) dems are smarter now and have smoothed out the rhetoric so they arent falling into the same divisional shit 2) the republicans were in power long enough to significantly fuck up
im not sure that this is as much an 'end' as everyone wants it to be - these racial resentments and everything are still here. its just been superseded by bush's colossal fuckups
― joe 40oz (deej), Wednesday, 8 October 2008 08:08 (sixteen years ago)
I think we're talking about graduations of insane Republicans, tho, deej. I think Frum's arguments are frequently wrong, and poorly argued, but ultimately not insane. Reading the Corner tho is like reading asylum scribblings. This fixation with Ayers over the last 3 days - sudden and fierce - is totally crazy. Even Frum is willing to acknowledge that bringing up Ayers is a nutso desperate tactic. If most Republican rhetoric is resentful and in denial, then the Corner is an ahistorical mouth-agape, drooling, stuttering insanity. A messianic era of lunacy, so to speak.

There was an opening for them both to talk about basic research on a nuclear power question, but I think only McCain too it.

Brokaw: Should we fund a Manhattan-like project that develops a nuclear bomb to deal with global energy and alternative energy or should we fund 100,000 garages across America, the kind of industry and innovation that developed Silicon Valley?
McCain: I think pure research and development investment on the part of the United States government is certainly appropriate. I think once it gets into productive stages, that we ought to, obviously, turn it over to the private sector.

Some deep shit there.
Another thing: His note-taking. He was scribbling down all this crap early on, and then left his legal pad hanging agape for the rest of the debate. Was he trying to look scholarly, or to legitimately remember his talking points.
Bush did this against Kerry in 2004. You could almost imagine the light bulb over his head. "Ooh! I better write shit down too!"

He got asked to prioritise three things, forget all three of them immediately, asked what they were again, wrote them down, then said "all three at once". Obama prioritised them then McCain came back with some shite about how "we don't wait until we finish doing x before solving y" clearly demonstrating that he doesn't know what 'prioritise' means.
There was another question about reforming welfare "in two years" to which Obama directly said "I don't know about two years but I'd hope to have it done in the first term of my Presidency*" McCain then said something like "Unlike Senator Obama I will answer your question" then didn't specify a timescale.
*bit presumptive of Obama to be thinking of second terms but he's projecting the air of a president in waiting.

Undecideds
Let's face it, just about anyone who is an undecided voter at this point is... well, not especially bright. Some are genuinely stupid, and some may be smart people who just don't think paying attention to current events is a valuable use of their time. Obviously from the perspective of predicting election outcomes it's useful to know what these people are thinking. However, it's not clear why handing a debate over to 80 of them and letting them write the questions (chosen by Brokaw, of course) is supposed to enlighten the rest of us.

There are men and women across this country who are solidly pro-life. They supported President Bush invading Iraq due to some sort of "hit them before they hit you" mentality. They wrinkle their nose at liberals who want to give handouts to people who don't work as they work harder at their jobs than ever before. Most of these people have held these opinions, or opinions like these, for many years.
Now, they're being forced to rethink some of these fundamental things that have defined themselves for so long. They're seeing that their pro-life positions have mostly been played by the G.O.P. for short-term electoral gain. They see that dashing into war is never the smart thing to do. They're beginning to see that although it's not as obvious and visible on a day-to-day basis in their lives like welfare may be, corporate welfare is even more expensive and robs their well-being even more than the occassional welfare cheat.
All that said and done, they're struggling with going against a lot of things that they believe in. If this contest was between Joe Lieberman and some vibrant Republican who, though not agreeing on many of our liberal issues but seemed to understand that something needs to fundamentally change in the way our government is run, I suspect that many of us would still be telling pollsters that we hadn't made our minds up yet.

I'm talking about the pro-life voters who have stuck with the G.O.P., who saw six years of all three branches being controlled by their party, who saw two new justices appointed to the Supreme Court, and the only result they've seen is the government's stifling of stem-cell research.
And I'm not talking about the supporters who pull crosses down Main Street and carry pictures of dead fetuses around. I'm talking about the "casual" pro-life supporter, someone who attends mass and has felt morally obligated to vote Republican in the past, but now may feel that their priorities lie elsewhere this time.

Interesting note from The Caucus:
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/08/debate-audience-members-talk-about-candidates/#more-6556
Both women, as well as the third audience member, were especially emphatic about their feelings on the two men’s performance after the debate. All three said that Mr. McCain shook hands with several audience members and then left fairly quickly. Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle, stuck around to shake far more hands, pose for pictures, sign autographs, and answer more questions, including from people who had been on stage but did not get a chance to ask their questions. Only when Secret Service agents told them it was time to go did the couple leave (upon which they headed for a post-debate fundraiser at Al and Tipper Gore’s house nearby).
“McCain leaving right afterward was pretty shocking to me – even some of the big McCain fans among us were really surprised he did that,” Ms. Jackson said. “I thought the Obamas came off like real people much more in the end.”
Ms. Trella added: for, “I was very impressed that the Obamas stayed til the very end, shook everyone’s hand, and just seemed very accessible. I think they won some people over by just sticking around and seeming happy to talk more.”
Imagine if the debate had been held in Ohio...you would have had to get the jaws of life to pry the candidates out of there. Tennessee's pretty solid McCain so I guess he didn't feel it was necessary to stick around.

Hey guys! Email your campaign strategies to John McCain!
As a professional marketer, I can say that McCain doesn't need a major event on Obama's radical associates, he needs a multi-pronged coordinated marketing campaign on this. My suggestion:
1. Title the campaign "Barack Obama's Neighborhood"2. Run 30 second television spots and Youtube ads in a serial format - i.e Day 1 in the Neighborhood, Day 2 " " ". Each day introduce a new, shady associate.3. End ads with a pointer to a slick separate website domain with more info. The kind of website that television shows and movies have, not politicians. Multimedia heavy - downloadable screen savers, viral e-cards, games (i.e. virtual card deck game with shady associates)4. Run web flash ads with same themes, drive traffic to website in #2.5. Have Palin reference campaign every day when she is doing her thing.

Having met a bunch of the TRULY undecideds in the past two months in the middle of Washington state (long story), it's not a matter of them not knowing anything, it's just them essentially being overtly cynical misanthropic "dudes" who think it doesn't really matter who becomes president because it's always the same shit every 4 years, even those wackjobs Bill Hicks and Ralph Nader had a point. All of these people happen to be men, in my recent experience, btw.
The recent economic downtowns and the decisions made by both Obama and McCain have been all of these guys even more resolutely "why the fuck does it matter anyway? My state is going Obama anyway, even if he turns out to be the better guy. Baaaaah."
On the other hand, these dudes' wifes or girlfriends are conversely far more decided, verbal, have been all along, and have all their arguments lined up and ready to recite when challenged, though their actual candidate choices are literally split between Obama and McCain if taken all together in a small poll.

I am an Associate Professor of Astronomy at the University of Chicago (the University that today has added yet another Nobel Prize winner in the sciences for the US). I would like to comment on Sen. McCain’s statement during the today’s debate that Sen. Obama has earmarked “$3 million for an overhead projector at a planetarium in Chicago, Ill. My friends, do we need to spend that kind of money?” The way Sen. McCain has phrased it suggests that Sen. Obama approved spending $3 million on an old-fashioned piece of office equipment (overhead projector). The 3 million is actually for an upgrade of the SkyTheater - a full dome projection system, which is probably the main attraction of the Adler Planetarium and is quite sophisticated and impressive piece of equipment. I find it appalling that Sen. McCain would call a science education tool for public (largely children) for a historic planetarium with millions of visitors a year a wasteful earmark. The planetarium’s focus, as stated on their website (http://adlerplanetarium.org) is “on inspiring young people, particularly women and minorities, to pursue careers in science.” Is an investment in such public facility at the time when US competitiveness in math and sciences is a constant source of alarm a waste? “American’s ability to compete in a 21st Century economy rests on our continued investments in math and science education,” said Rep. Brian Baird, Chairman of the Research and Science Education Subcommittee in Congress, after the passage of The 21st Century Competitiveness Act of 2007. Considering such investments “wasteful earmarks” today, even in the face of the financial crisis, will severely cripple US economic competitiveness in the increasingly high-tech world down the road. — Andrey Kravtsov, Chicago, IL

Adler Planentarium is one of the top planetariums in the world, one of the few that is affilated with a top academic department in Astronomy — several of the PhD research staff at Adler have cross appointments in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago. Their exhibits are among the best presentations of science to a public audience that I’ve seen, bringing cutting edge research in astrophysics to a very broad audience, mostly students. The Sky Theater at Adler is phenomenal. Now, there may be a legitimate debate about whether a line item request in the federal budget is the right way to fund such projects. But anyone who values science education should appreciate that this is 3 million dollars *very* well spent. The fact that McCain decided to bring this up to a national audience again gives me serious concerns about his view of science education.

Re: The Ayers Card is a Deuce, Not an Ace? [Andy McCarthy]
"Does anybody really seriously believe that Barack Obama is a secret left-wing radical?"
You're right, David. Why would anyone think this guy is a left-wing radical? Just because sought (and got) an endorsement from the Chicago branch of the Socialist International, got his training from ACORN and a Saul Alinsky outfit, wanted to surrender to terrorists, thinks the Constitution vests alien combatants with rights against the American people, fought a law prohibiting infanticide, praises Bill Ayers' views on education and the criminal justice system, approved millions in subsidies for hard Left education "reform" projects, wants to nationalize the healthcare industry (for starters), wants to transfer $850B to the international community through the good offices of the UN, and (having voted against Roberts and Alito) says he thinks the key qualifications for a Supreme Court justice — after considering a candidate's positions on affirmative action, reproductive rights, and the rights of the disabled — are "empathy" and "what is in the judge's heart"?

The way Sen. McCain has phrased it suggests that Sen. Obama approved spending $3 million on an old-fashioned piece of office equipment (overhead projector).
The 3 million is actually for an upgrade of the SkyTheater - a full dome projection system, which is probably the main attraction of the Adler Planetarium and is quite sophisticated and impressive piece of equipment.
lol I turned to my wife during the debate and said "that overhead projector mccain keeps talking about is probably a planetarium"

I mean, here you have out there these kinds of, you know, incitements out there - guy introducing Barack using his middle name as if it's some epitaph or something," Biden said, apparently confusing the words 'epitaph' and 'epithet,' the Associated Press reported.
epitaph works here too, though

i liked that the presidents McCain referred to were Hoover and Th. Roosevelt.
i couldn't help thinking he might have actually voted for both of them.
i too was very impressed by the "should health care be a commodity" question. it was too big, too moral - it cut too close to the fucked-upness of american capitalism for either of them to feel confident in answering it head-on. although i bet if obama had more than a few seconds to turn it over in his mind his answer would have been the right one.
i think obama's boner for bin laden is unfortunately still part of the job requirement in 2008
all in all i feel so freaking proud of obama - he's the most thoughtful and sophisticated presidential candidate i've ever seen
