As requested, the due date for ballots has been bumped back 19 (count 'em) days. So far I've gotten two ballots, which have both been counted. Here's the revised text w/the rules and noms:

THE RULES

You may vote for up to 40 films, which must come from the nominations list. I'm using the old point system (top film most points, second one point less...).

You will email me your ballots at this address: thelmaritterrulestheworld and it is at yahoo.com

THAT'S thelmaritterrulestheworld and is at yahoo.com (copy & paste is yr friend here)

Please format your ballots with your #1 film at the top and the rest in descending order. That's how I will read 'em.

If you choose to send comments (and I encourage you to), please place them at the end of the email, after your rankings.

The voting period began some time ago and now ends @ Midnight Central Standard Time on October 31st (Halloween night)

If there's any other news, watch this thread for it.

Now ladies and germs, I give you...

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 9 October 2008 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

Thank you for giving Eric time to see Othello and Son of Paleface.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 9 October 2008 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

I'm guessing we can't vote for The Apu Trilogy as one entry.

Dr Morbius, Saturday, 11 October 2008 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

No you can't.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 12 October 2008 19:26 (sixteen years ago)

well, all the work is going to be winnowing then.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 13 October 2008 16:22 (sixteen years ago)

17 days.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

If anyone needs a copy of Female on the Beach so you can include it amongst your 40 (and you will!), lemme know.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

4 in, 4 counted

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

jeez, is that all?

Dr. Strange taking on Dormammu (Ioannis), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

These results ought to be good. (My ballot's not in yet, so there will be at least 5 in the end.)

Eric H., Wednesday, 15 October 2008 16:57 (sixteen years ago)

16 days peeps

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 16:58 (sixteen years ago)

Having done this before, I'm expecting to get 75% or so of the ballots in the last three days.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

ilxors be lazy sods.

Dr. Strange taking on Dormammu (Ioannis), Wednesday, 15 October 2008 17:05 (sixteen years ago)

I am going to try to watch stuff in the next 16 days, which will inevitably be 2 films max.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 15 October 2008 17:11 (sixteen years ago)

The relative lesser-knowns on my list that I'd encourage anyone to screen are:

The Night of the Hunter
All That Heaven Allows
Anatomy of a Murder
Born Yesterday
The Red Balloon
What's Opera, Doc?
The 400 Blows
Sweet Smell of Success
The Men
A Night to Remember
A Face in the Crowd
Tokyo Story

...though I'm guessing you've all seen all those. Hard to know what's considered lesser-known before the '60s.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 16 October 2008 16:34 (sixteen years ago)

Still, I've missed a LOT here. Looking forward to seeing others' final ballots...

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 16 October 2008 16:35 (sixteen years ago)

I think of all those as fairly well known. I recommend all the French and Japanese, along w/ the Apu trilogy.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 16 October 2008 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

also Madame de just hit DVD.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 16 October 2008 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

...and the Rossellini of yr choice. tho little besides Flowers of St Francis may be available.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 16 October 2008 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

three of those made my list, Pete; gotta say i'd pay a pretty penny to see Tokyo Story, tho.

and in semi-related news, i finally got a hold of a decent DVD player that can handle both European and American discs, so anyone here wants to recommend any Criterion Collection DVD's please feel free to do so.

**just works just fine** (Ioannis), Thursday, 16 October 2008 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

I love the F For Fake Criterion. Haven't pierced the Mr. Arkadin one but I'm sure it's aces. And not Criterion but The Jazz Singer 3-DVD set may be the best ever.

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 16 October 2008 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

Hey I just noticed that Mr. Arkadin didn't make the list. Doubt it would've made my 40 but I love the shit out of its every frame.

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 16 October 2008 18:52 (sixteen years ago)

it's up there.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 16 October 2008 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

How the hell did I miss that? Anyhoo, thanx.

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 16 October 2008 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

favoring Mr. Arkadin over Welles' Othello is a headscratcher to me. (also I don't think the 'official' title is The Tragedy of Othello)

I will leave Looney Tunes voting to the more egalitarian types... but what's the title of the one w/ the lost penguin and Bugs' line "Hoboken!?! OOOH, I'M DYYYYIN!"?

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 16 October 2008 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i remember you big upping The Jazz Singer 'round about these parts before, Kevin. i'll have to check that one out sometime soon.

jeez, that's kinda sad; ilxors in not liking old b&w films. :^(

Ioannis, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 10:12 (sixteen years ago)

I have half a dozen '50s films at home to watch -- to figure out exactly how much greater they are then when I last saw them 5-20 years ago -- and, if I'm lucky, I'll get to one of then before Friday.

I hate polls. Polls suck.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

also must learn not to type "then" when I don't want to

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

Mine's coming.

What Morbs and Chris said.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

e.g., should Ikiru be ahead of Ugetsu? Is Tarnished Angels the best Sirk? No clue.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

1. Probably but Mizoguchi shatters Kurosawa in general. 2. Hells no!

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 14:30 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not trusting a guy who says Track of the Cat is better than Hitchcock... ;)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 14:33 (sixteen years ago)

I saw Anastasia again recently. Woof.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 28 October 2008 14:36 (sixteen years ago)

My ballot should help push the good old familiar favorites to their predictable peak positions a la the other decade polls.

Eric H., Tuesday, 28 October 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago)

When I finish the ballot, I mean.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 30 October 2008 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

So wait. How do points works? Or do I just list the films in order of preference?

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 31 October 2008 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

List in order of preference.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 31 October 2008 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

NEWS:

So far I've got 8 in and counted, which currently makes for a top 50 (50 films with 2+ votes & 40+ points). There are loads more that are in striking distance of that threshold so more ballots would easily allow for a top 75 or 100. I'm going to be very busy w/non-ilx matters this weekend, and I won't be online. So I'll extend the deadline until 6:00 PM CST Monday the 3rd. However, don't let that stop you from sending in your ballot ASAP.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 31 October 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

Just a few hours to go. Please please send in a ballot if you haven't already. If you have, maybe you know someone else who'd like to vote? Just sayin'.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 3 November 2008 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

when's the deadline tonight?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 3 November 2008 17:34 (sixteen years ago)

6:00 PM CST tonight, but I'm willing to take stuff till 10:00 PM (that's when I get off work).

BTW, to Morbs if he missed it. I've emailed you already, I'll need you to resubmit your ballot. For some reason it never reached the inbox.

I do have Kevin's list, so he's ok.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 3 November 2008 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

you have mine, right?

Eric H., Monday, 3 November 2008 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

i re-sent mine (2x)

Dr Morbius, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

My ballot is the one with 40 WB toons on it.

Eric H., Monday, 3 November 2008 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

not the only one.

Ioannis, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

xp: how many de Palma school projects are on it?

Dr Morbius, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

More than there are films by Howard Hawks.

Eric H., Monday, 3 November 2008 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

I hope you mean "equal to the number of"

Dr Morbius, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

Actually I mean "one less than the number of," but considering it's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Hawks is about the last reason I'm voting for it ...

Eric H., Monday, 3 November 2008 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

still have never seen GPB. I put on the one Carpenter did a crappy hommage to.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Eric H., Monday, 3 November 2008 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

speaking of -- there's a new print of The Fury showing here!

Dr Morbius, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

If facebook unfriending were baseball, you'd already have, like, 87 strikes.

Eric H., Monday, 3 November 2008 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

*snif*

Dr Morbius, Monday, 3 November 2008 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

Well, luckily I'm gay and don't know how many strikes = out.

Eric H., Monday, 3 November 2008 19:11 (sixteen years ago)

oh, you were traded back to Team Gay!

Dr Morbius, Monday, 3 November 2008 19:12 (sixteen years ago)

I chose to be traded.

Eric H., Monday, 3 November 2008 19:21 (sixteen years ago)

Fights on the 1950s ILX film poll thread pale compared to the '80s and '90s editions.

Eric H., Monday, 3 November 2008 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

well, the most fighty people have seen about 8 films each from the '50s.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 3 November 2008 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

You are of the fighty people.

Eric H., Monday, 3 November 2008 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

"are you of the body, brother?"

Ioannis, Monday, 3 November 2008 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

xp: As are you! But I already know what you like from your year by year lists, and they're not that scandalous.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 3 November 2008 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

and only 15 months or so til the '00s poll! Plenty of bloodletting potential there.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 3 November 2008 19:40 (sixteen years ago)

Ooooh thread getting snippy even before the results are revealed. I love it!

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 3 November 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

Eric and I are just doing our usu game of the cine-dozens.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 3 November 2008 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

Just mailed in my top 22, left out the movies I don't care about. I feel bad about not commenting more on my choices, but that's my own fault, waiting 'till the very last minute.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 3 November 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

Eric: I did get yours, and I now also have Morbs as well.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 3 November 2008 23:17 (sixteen years ago)

Bump.

I've got a "Top 65" at the moment from 11 ballots. I'd like to at least get a "Top 75" so the poll shall remain open.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 01:21 (sixteen years ago)

Even though I haven't seen the entire list, I'd say Touch of Evil is better than all of the other movies on that list combined.

Vision, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 01:24 (sixteen years ago)

12 in

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 01:54 (sixteen years ago)

Argh! Spent too much time pondering and missed it!

Gukbe, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 02:13 (sixteen years ago)

You still have time. Send it in!

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 02:17 (sixteen years ago)

sent! phew

Gukbe, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 02:30 (sixteen years ago)

13 in and counted. On the cusp of a "Top 75". More ballots please.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 03:12 (sixteen years ago)

election fraud!

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

erection...?

Ioannis, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

I voted for Imitation of Life ten times!

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 15:44 (sixteen years ago)

Oh good. I can still vote! Change you can believe in!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

Damn straight. Get it in ASAP. I'd really like a "Top 75."

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 16:17 (sixteen years ago)

I'm calling Jimmy Carter in to oversee this late voting.

"He's history's greatest monster!"

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 16:22 (sixteen years ago)

Bump. still waitin' for Jimmy.

If you haven't voted yet, vote now...for movies from the 50s!

"He's history's greatest monster!"

no, just a bad president.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

If you can wait until tomorrow, I've got comments in progress that I can send tonight. I sent my ballot weeks ago, in case you didn't get it.

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

I've got your ballot Pete. I'm still taking ballots if anyone is still interested. Barring a massive sea change on that front, I'll probably do the reveal next week after the presidential brouhaha has tapered off.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 23:44 (sixteen years ago)

still taking ballots?? HMMMMM

Nomi Malone and Her Bloodstains (Stevie D), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 16:50 (sixteen years ago)

You wanted a "Top 100" no? I'm counting a ballot I got yesterday right now, which has secured a "Top 75", an outcome that is probably the best I can manage bar emailing everyone who nominated but didn't vote to beg for ballots.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

yes, don't water things down too much. ;)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 18:14 (sixteen years ago)

Oh yeah.

BTW, Alfred, still wanna vote?

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

15 in, 15 counted.

Looks like. So I'm calling it now. The ballots have been counted and the reveal will begin on Tuesday.

Thank you for your patience.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 14:30 (sixteen years ago)

Fuck, I forgot.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 14:34 (sixteen years ago)

post your picks anyway, Alfred; that way we can all blame you if something we don't like wins (or not, as the case may be). :^)

Ioannis, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

How could you possibly forget, Alfred?!

Eric H., Tuesday, 11 November 2008 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

looney tunes jpg prophesising things to come?

Ioannis, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 14:47 (sixteen years ago)

Post-election recovery.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 14:49 (sixteen years ago)

priorities, man!

Ioannis, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 14:52 (sixteen years ago)

How many times must a thread be bumped?

Eric H., Tuesday, 11 November 2008 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

it's OK, William Wyler did not have a great '50s. :) (I like Detective Story, but not top-40 love.)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

looney tunes jpg prophesising things to come?

One would have to hope.

Eric H., Tuesday, 11 November 2008 15:34 (sixteen years ago)

oh, and Carrie. That's top-100 maybe.

WB toon votes will be split.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 15:35 (sixteen years ago)

Shoot, I forgot to send comments--will send them this morning...

Psyched!

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

Got my coffee (with pumpkin spice soy milk today) and all set to make fun of whoever voted for South Pacific.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 15:53 (sixteen years ago)

'tis coming.

The Wild Shirtless Lyrics of Mark Farner (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

Given the much more limited participation on this poll, compared to the 70s/80s/90s, I find it really hard to predict what will actually win this one. I'm guessing Touch of Evil, but if it misses just a few ballots, it could just as easily rank in the 40s or 50s.

Eric H., Tuesday, 11 November 2008 16:01 (sixteen years ago)

Won't Sunset Boulevard take this? It's probably high up on some ballots, and if not, still in the lower rankings low on the others, 's my guess.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 16:12 (sixteen years ago)

and if not, = and

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 16:12 (sixteen years ago)

Jeez I screwed up that one sentence didn't I?

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

Predicted top three:

1. Touch of Evil
2. Rear Window
3. Tokyo Story

Eric H., Tuesday, 11 November 2008 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

no way.
