I don't know that cities should be too self-conscious about creating "iconic" buildings that blend into the environment or capture the character of the city -- that's obviously a big consideration, but it's ultimately not something you have any ability to control over the long term! I mean, one interesting thing about cities' iconic character-expressing postcard buildings and monuments is that the style is probably less an issue than the time-frame: they say something about the city by kinda marking the eras when that city was up for building giant iconic buildings. The Eiffel Tower and Paris metro stops; the Chrysler and Flat Iron buildings in New York; the Sears Tower and Hancock; the Space Needle -- these all communicate something important about a city's era. There's also surely a level on which your big iconic buildings guide the stuff that comes after them, so that it's less a matter of their blending with the existing environment -- decades pass and the landscape changes, and maybe that big iconic building becomes the example, a city's vision of itself that it's put forth for everything else to relate to. So I dunno, I kinda like the play of accident in this, the way that no matter how much you think about the city's character or how a building fits with everything else, the context is going to change completely, and one day your fancy new iconic building will actually be the quaint old classic building -- the building that was supposed to express your modernity winds up expressing your history, etc. etc.

eh i dont think theres too many examples of iconic towers inspiring future construction along the same aesthetic lines - other than more towers. im not a big preservationist and imo those considerations are kinda neither here nor there as far as the impact of these lol hueg buildings.

their main problem is the tension between trying to create something awe-inspiring and a place thats actually good for people. like i enjoy marveling at the manhattan skyline but being in midtown is a pretty alienating drag of an experience.

> Burj Dubai, already under construction right?

according to the recent wired article, yes. and they claim to have cracked the height problem and the people keep asking them to build it higher. wasn't any official finished height logged for it by the time the article was written.

http://www.wired.com/culture/design/magazine/15-12/mf_baker?currentPage=all

"The initial scheme was for a building of about 1,800 feet, 317 feet taller than the Petronas Towers. Yet the clients made a request: Overengineer the foundation, just in case we change our minds. Which the clients did. Repeatedly."

...

"The final height of the Burj will remain secret until its completion in 2009. SOM's managing partner George Efstathiou brags that it'll be as high as the Sears Tower and the Hancock Center stacked on top of each other (about 2,600 feet). Others say it could be taller — more than 3,000 feet."

another, creepier image of it:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/4c/X-seed4000.jpg/320px-X-seed4000.jpg

The X-Seed 4000 "was never meant to be built," says Georges Binder, managing director of Buildings & Data, a firm which compiles data banks on buildings worldwide. "The purpose of the plan was to earn some recognition for the firm, and it worked."[1]

Its proposed 4,000 metres (13,123 ft) height, 6 km (3.7 mi) wide sea-base, and 800 floor capacity could accommodate five hundred thousand to one million inhabitants.

It was designed for Tokyo, Japan by the Taisei Corporation in 1995[2] as a futuristic environment combining ultra-modern living and interaction with nature.[3]

Unlike conventional skyscrapers, the X-Seed 4000 would be required to actively protect its occupants from considerable air pressure gradations and weather fluctuations along its massive elevation. Its design calls for the use of solar power to maintain internal environmental conditions.

http://www.dezeen.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/0dayview2.jpg

An essentially sustainable project standing at a height of approximately 300 metres, the Cloud is a 20000m2 landscape-in-the-sky comprising a lake, gardens, rotating bridges, spiraling walkways and terraces, an auditorium and sky-sports platform. The Cloud is approached on ground level from an esplanade with a pool reflecting a forest of inclined columns reaching up to the huge, translucent floating island. Access to the Cloud is gained through a few non-inclined tubular shafts, which double as structural support. In collaboration with ARUP AGU (Advanced Geometry Unit), significantly creative technological solutions are being developed for its realization.

since this is basically the "wtf @ dubai" thread, from the awesome BLDGBLOG:

Because "it takes too long to come down to ground level each day to make it worthwhile," a crane operator on the Burj Dubai – the world's tallest building – is rumored to have "been up there for over a year," the Daily Telegraph reports.
His name is Babu Sassi, and he is "a fearless young man from Kerala" who has become "the cult hero of Dubai’s army of construction workers." He also lives several thousand feet above the ground.

The Abraj Al-Bait Towers is a building complex under construction in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Upon completion, the tallest tower in the complex would stand as the tallest building in Saudi Arabia and one of the tallest and largest buildings in the world with a planned height of 595 m (1,950 ft). If all seven towers are grouped together as one building, the structure would have the largest floor area of any structure in the world with 1,450,000 square metres (15,600,000 sq ft) of floorspace.

The Stairscraper by Barcelona-based Nabito Architects took first place in the Total Housing Competition for Abu Dhabi. The corkscrew design offers a solution for increasing housing density in urban, suburban and even rural areas without forcing residents to forgo their personal green spaces. The tower consists of individual residences stacked one on top of another, with a green roof for each home serving as a small backyard for the home above.
