what U cry 4 (jim), Monday, 20 October 2008 14:41 (seventeen years ago)

Ya but those 2 have at least won their matches convincingly this season, without giving the opposition a sniff. Liverpool have taunted and scrapped and plundered their way to last-ditch after last-ditch win and it's quite simply unfair. As MPx4A said after yet another undeserved triumph, "Liverpool are about to embark on the most morally reprehensible unbeaten season ever", and thus far he's speaking the truth. Barely once have they deserved to win throughout the 90 minutes. Add to this their uncharismatic antifootball and their utterly cliched players, not to mention fans, sense of entitlement etc etc, and you gain a measure of why the rest of the footballing world regards them with such ire.

Alan Green does not help matters.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 10:12 (seventeen years ago)

No, thing with Everton is that they were set up after Protestant people in Liverpool complained that Liverpool FC was too biased in favour of Catholic players, so LFC set up a separate team that was just for Protestants. Both sides are actually run by Liverpool FC, hence the free trading of players between the two which earned them the nickname of 'the Old Firm'. Everton were originally called Liverpool Wednesday since that was the day they played their matches, but that was changed when they signed the UK's first sponsorship deal with The Everton Mint Company in 1946 for £10,000 and exclusive image rights for Gary Imlach's dad.

It is an oft-repeated misconception that Tranmere are a Liverpool side; they are in fact from Wigan.

William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 10:13 (seventeen years ago)

Most fans still remember Bill Shankly's proud claim that "There's four teams in Liverpool: Everton, Liverpool, Everton reserves and Liverpool reserves".

Bill Shankly's nephew is better known by his stage name, Warren G.

Many fans that are not woolybacks like you remember the prolific Margi Clarke scoring 122 goals for Liverpool Reserves Reserves in 1978.

They still talk of that in bars here in Moenchengladbach to this day as they sing below the scarves of friendship and unity in the face of the bosses

Music has played a valuable role in banter between both Liverpool and Everton fans, and indeed 90s Liverpool winger Stig Inge Bjørnebye was regularly ribbed by Toffees fans for his role in Abba tribute band Bjorn Again. Stig himself always claimed the last laugh was on Everton fans, who mistakenly thought he played Bjorn, when in fact he was Benny.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

Most Liverpudlians are actually very generous to those less fortunate than themselves and can often be seen involving themselves in community outreach programs for woolybacks stretching as far afield as Skelmersdale, Lymm and Runcorn. A prime example of this can be found in Hoylake where much of the seafront housing was in danger of literally falling into the sea. Thanks to the sterling work of Liverpool FC and also Liverpool Reserves FC over 75% of the population of Hoylake now live in a Robbie Fowler house

I agree with the Lex, on this thread. I even like coffee!!! But unlike him, apparently, I don't have people to bring it. I make it myself !!!

"no, Ronan, it was just that you said at least Michael Jones had a footballing reason for hating Liverpool, and I wondering why he was allowed one but fans of other teams weren't."

And I said hate all the things you want! Let me apologise for denying you what seems such a pleasure.

Ronan, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks. I will.

ailsa, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

obviously local rivalry is the most understandable reason for hating a club

Annoying Display Name (blueski), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

It's not the only one though. There are lots of teams I have a huge dislike for, it varies depending on how boring they are, how annoying their fans are, and various other factors depending on how wound-up I feel like being.

ailsa, Tuesday, 21 October 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

how annoying their fans are

Liverpool top of the league here

Annoying fans. I've met them.

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 21 October 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

what is the biggest percentage of non-annoying fans a club can have before being hated?

one month passes...

Levels of Steven Gerrard idolatry among the BBC Liverpool Supporters' Club reaching are at their highest and most nauseating for some time. If he's that good how come he's shite for England?

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 13:32 (sixteen years ago)

He was pretty good for England on Saturday.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

Didn't see that game. He's never Zidane-like, or whoever, for England though, is he? I could be wrong, but I don't think Capello thinks he's "England's Best Player"

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 13:36 (sixteen years ago)

he needs to be balder

rooney needs more headbutts

\∫Öζ/.... argh oh noes! (ken c), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 13:45 (sixteen years ago)

gerrard's probably really good at headbutts.

if they can only learn from each other

\∫Öζ/.... argh oh noes! (ken c), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 13:45 (sixteen years ago)

Does he have a sister? That usually works.

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 13:46 (sixteen years ago)

He's not exactly Zidane-like for Liverpool is he?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 14:01 (sixteen years ago)

You don't think he plays well for Liverpool either?

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 14:04 (sixteen years ago)

zidane wouldn't have been stevie g for liverpool though

I suppose the acid test is what non-English fans think of him but from what I can see Gerrard isn't even viewed as the best player in the England setup let alone the world.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 14:16 (sixteen years ago)

that's because beckham's still england's best player

thought we were talking for england

By non-English fans? He definitely isn't.

apart from Zidane himself

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

This was provoked by watching Graham Taylor and others on F(ootball) F(ocu)s bemoaning the fact that Capello wasn't building the England team around "England's best player", Stevie G. I think at one stage Taylor said something like, "It's like he's building the team round Wayne Rooney instead"... duh!

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

(xp) Plus, yeah, the fact that Zidane said Gerrard was the best player in the world, supposedly

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

i haven't seen many england games lately, so i don't know how rooney's doing for them, tbh. but he's certainly over-rated in england.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 14:52 (sixteen years ago)

can't be arsed to check but i'm sure zidane said something more along the lines of gerrard being TBPITW in terms of leadership and effect on team and stuff, and in comparison to kaka and ronaldo (who are more like outstanding cogs in a machine) that's fair enuff imo. you could say "oh well that's cos liverpool arent as well balanced as those teams therfore overreliant" but then messi is also gerrard-esque.

the england issue adds in the question of leeway and best position (ie whether $t£vi£ is just a massive tart who requires the moon on a stick before he can perform) but ultimately kaka and messi would also be crap up front, ronaldo is no centre mid, etc just as gerrard is sometimes unconvincing at left inside forward whatever whatever.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

So why does a intelligent manager like Capello not play Gerrard in his "best position"?

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:16 (sixteen years ago)

... assuming the various other England managers Gerrard has underperformed for and/or been played out of position for are dolts

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

tbh i thought this thread revive would be about that new guardian plonker's lame "gerrard is the 1st english total footballer" spiel the other day.

xp cos he doesnt have much choice with what he's got to work with and has to maximise all-over efficiency as it were? like, 70% gerrard and 100% rooney is better than 110% gerrard with 4% rooney.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

110% isn't much by footballing standards

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

that new guardian plonker's lame "gerrard is the 1st english total footballer" spiel the other day.

Thank the Lord I didn't read that!

cos he doesnt have much choice with what he's got to work with and has to maximise all-over efficiency as it were? like, 70% gerrard and 100% rooney is better than 110% gerrard with 4% rooney.

Seems like 100% Gerrard with 100% Rooney is not an option?

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

you wouldn't like that

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

You still wouldn't win the World Cup

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

judging by what their respective bests have so far required i don't really see how it can be, no.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, just remembered another choice gobbet of nonsense from Football Focus: "If Steven Gerrard could reproduce his Liverpool form, then the World Cup might already be in the bag for England"

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

a really shit bag as well. like those old Head ones with fluorescent piping.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 15:31 (sixteen years ago)

if gerrard could reproduce his liverpool form like during his champions league winning year, while his england teammates could reproduce the liverpool form of gerrard's teammates during the champions league run, while england's opponents could reproduce the form of liverpool's opponents during the champions league run, while england's opponents in the world cup final could reproduce the second half and penalty shootout performance of ac milan's second half and penalty shootout performance, then the world cup might already be in the bag for england.

Lots of xposts.

Ashley Cole is the best English player at the moment. It's just he's a cunt as well, so people don't like complimenting him.

Kaka plays upfront pretty well for AC and Messi has already scored 20+, I'm sure he wouldn't go to pot if you put him in the middle instead of on the right.

Also, Ray Parlour = the first name to come into my head concerning the "English total footballer" when I saw that article. Being able to play in lots of positions doesn't make you Cruyff.

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

Or only being able to play in one, like Stevie G, for that matter

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

stevie g plays on the left to accommodate frankie lampard, england's other, other other, other world's best player (TM)

caught england-netherlands 96 on ESPN classics last night- technically, the current bunch aren't on the same planet. first touch, passing, movement were exceptional. international football sure has changed.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 16:25 (sixteen years ago)

yeah yeah...watch the same team against switzerland in the opening game (i maintain they were best against germany in the semi tho)
