This looks really, uh, weird.

(Also, Eastwood has never won a Best Actor Oscar.)

caek, Saturday, 25 October 2008 01:41 (seventeen years ago)

i love how all his movies for like 15 years now have been about coming to terms with his oldness in a way that a lotta old thymey stars have too much vanity to explore

First review

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 5 December 2008 00:46 (seventeen years ago)

'"I have more in common with these gooks than with my own spoiled, rotten family."'

caek, Friday, 5 December 2008 12:12 (seventeen years ago)

This film looks preposterous.

caek, Friday, 5 December 2008 12:12 (seventeen years ago)

"Eastwood's initial vocal rasp moderates over time, just as his character softens toward the seeming aliens who surround him. There is probably no leading Hollywood actor with less ham in him than Eastwood -- just compare him to Jack Nicholson or Al Pacino, for starters -- but by his standards, this is a real barn-burner; grumbling under his breath or merely looking askance at the perceived lowlifes that litter his existence, Eastwood clearly relishes this role and conveys his delight to the audience, to great satisfaction all around."

^^^ will definitely watch this film.

caek, Friday, 5 December 2008 12:13 (seventeen years ago)

like Million Dollar Baby wasn't both preposterous & dreadfully familiar?

Dr Morbius, Friday, 5 December 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

Never seen it.

"ooh look a black character that no one ever acknowledges is black!"

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 5 December 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)

mini-take:

All in the Family + The Shootist

(with the pluses and minuses implied therein)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

"ooh look a black character that no one ever acknowledges is black!

Well, he IS lynched.

All in the Family + The Shootist

So his female lead is a Hepburn/Jean Stapleton hybrid?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

well, his wife is dead, so it's more like Archie Bunker's Place if Archie had stayed as verbally hardcore a bigot as he was at the start of AITF.

much nervous audience tittering at the slurs throughout

(Lauren Bacall was the female lead in The Shootist, shame on you Alfred)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)

This is probably the worst Clint Eastwood film. Surely he gets sent better screenplays than this?

The funny bits were pretty funny. Several big laughs. I watched it alone so was fine with the racist slurs/jokes (I'm white, btw), but it would be interesting to see how audiences react. Nervous tittering sounds about right, Morbs. I'm not sure if the closing song was supposed to be funny, but it was.

caek, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 03:02 (seventeen years ago)

This is probably the worst Clint Eastwood film

Directed by Eastwood, I should say. His performance was great.

caek, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 03:08 (seventeen years ago)

This is probably the worst Clint Eastwood film

Worse than Firefox or The Rookie?

I dunno -- the acclaim for this flummoxes me. He spent most of A Perfect World and Million Dollar Baby uttering stuff like "If ya got sumpin' stuck in yer craw, spit it out!" and "I don't train women, girlie!" What makes this one any different?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 03:09 (seventeen years ago)

does he exact his revenge in a satisfying manner - or is it all boohoo like most of his recent movies - this will help me to decide if i am really going to watch it

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 03:10 (seventeen years ago)

i dont need anymore ponderous bullshit from u old man - u directed high plains drifter - try to remember

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 03:11 (seventeen years ago)

OK, it's the worst I've seen.

I think the difference between previous Eastwood as old-timer performances and this one, is that this one is mostly pretty silly and hammy (which I really enjoyed in this case).

caek, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 03:12 (seventeen years ago)

I think it's best described as a comedy written by someone who thought they were writing a drama comedy, but can't write drama for shit.

Yes, that is the best description. I should write reviews.

caek, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 03:18 (seventeen years ago)

Not the best Eastwood film, but I did like it - maybe the most American movie I've seen all year (in the gritty Sam Fuller sense). Clint's Dirty Harry/Hank Hill is exasperating, but genuinely affecting at times. Looking at him in this is like looking at Mt. Rushmore.

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Sunday, 21 December 2008 06:05 (seventeen years ago)

The tone of this was too 'moralizing after-school special' for me, and its treatment of eastwood's character's racism is a little too ambiguous.
It's good to see hmong actors and hmong culture depicted in a major film - maybe for the first time?

some of eastwoods best scowling in a long time

ice cr?m, Sunday, 21 December 2008 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

The more I think about it, the more I like it. Sam Fuller is still the best way to look at it.

Chris Barrus (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 09:18 (seventeen years ago)

I liked that the NYT (Dargis?) pointed out than when he growls, he LITERALLY goes "Grrrr, grrrr."

burt_stanton, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

The Archie Bunker stuff is really really broad. But 'charming'? Not so much, fortunately.

The barbershop 'education' scene is a bit WTF comedywise

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

I have to admit I was appalled, like Walt, that the priest kept turning up. Brian O'Byrne in Muillion Dollar Baby was a better priest for Clint (ie, cursing).

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 18:51 (seventeen years ago)

So how is Eastwood's perf any different from Clint The Quint's in White Hunter, Black Heart?

i haven't really read this thread but the biggest problem i had w/ this was how bad of an actor the boy was. also w/ the racist taunts it started to become like one of those absurdist snl skits except instead of it being funny it was just really really tiresome. also the ending was >_<

Dag dude. I thought the kid was fine insofar as he was supposed to be terrified or uncomfortable in pretty much every scene he's in. The taunts started to make me laugh about halfway through as it became clearer they were endearing and they got more creative. And what was wrong with the ending?? I mean yeah a little sentimental obviously but satisfying I thought.

I've not read any of this thread. Is this film a biopic based on "Il Grande Torino", the nickname given to the Torino football team in the Italian post-war period, usually acknowledged as one of the greatest club level teams in association football history, who all died in the Superga airplane tragedy in 1949? Is Eastwood playing Valentino Mazzola?

this is one of the worst films I can remember seeing.

so many stereotypes, awful acting, really clunky lines, massively convoluted themes with no point to any of them, tacked on violence. so fucking awful.

it was like "denis" with violence and racism. what was the point of the whole thing? this kid just needs a damn good stint of hard work and to call some people jerks and assholes, that'll straighten him out. maybe if racist old men ran this world we'd be in a lot better shape, they call it like they see it!

When a director with Eastwood's past makes a back-to-basics move like Gran Torino, he's reduced to first principles: vigilantism and a creeping case of the cutes.

Can't quite fathom how anyone thought this anything other than hilarious/terrible. Most people I know who saw it all expected something more serious but all just gave in to it and had to laugh.

And then the few moments of bad things really jar because you're all "that doesnt really have any place in a comedy does it?"

the acting is pretty bad

I actually got into a big argument about this with a friend the other night. I thought the two Hmong kids were really wooden and awful, but my friend swore that was "the point", that they were awkward kids. I don't buy it, I just didn't ever feel a genuine emotion out of either of them. The song at the end of the movie was hilarious though.

But on the whole I thought the movie was just okay. Some really awkward scenes, but I thought there were a couple that worked well. Not at all worth the hype, but not as terrible as its ILX reputation might suggest.
