Yes, Kate beat me to this suggestion. A greyhound would be great!
Yeah, one reason we bought a Cavapoo was because poodles are a non-shedding breed. Unfortunately, Gypsy is more of a poodle than a CKC spaniel in demeanor -- we were hoping for a lapdog and got a 17-lb. ball of energy.

I'm totally in love with CKC spaniels, but the health issues with them seem just ridiculous (including one defect where their brains get too big for their heads and press down around their spinal cords and they suffer debilitating head pains and have to be put down)

In Land of the High Flags, which is a memoir about 1960s Afghanistan, there's a very nice scene where the dictatorial sort-of-butler guy who manages the entire household declines the rescued puppy that the author offers him, and explains that dogs are unclean for him and he can't keep one. She later finds him in the kitchen with a lap full of puppies, singing them to sleep when no one is around.

Sorry about your bad dog experience Matt; I do always hasten to point out that it's not about the dog, it's about the owner. Pits aren't dangerous unless they've been mistreated and then allowed to run rampant. Unfortunately, they've somehow become the posterdog for shitty owners... lord knows I see a lot of asshole pits/owners in my own neighborhood and I'm always struggling with my girl's sometimes aggressive attitude, but they're truly sweet animals when well taken care of. I do dig that don't much matter when you're being chased; I'd only ask that you bear in mind it was a bad dog moreso than a bad pit.
From Times Press conference today:As for the dog, he recognizes it’s a major issue, saying it has generated more interest on our Web site than anything. He says he has two criteria that may not be reconcilable: His older daughter, Malia, is allergic to dogs, so the dog has to be hypoallergenic; at the same time, “our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but obviously a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me.”

We need more info. I should start a "So gonna happen Q family dognapping project" thread so ppl can figure out clues to track down location of doggie. Clues so far: green registration/rabies tag.

― Mr. Que, Friday, 7 November 2008 21:23 (seventeen years ago)
dunno! But if so we should find out when he is at work so we can come get doggie without a fight. Also, we will have to buy a gun (we can do that in DC now!) so that we can ward of owner when he comes to reclaim.
― quincie, Friday, 7 November 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)
I'm still beside myself at gabbneb's terrifying rat dog/lizard hybrid.
― Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 7 November 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)
i vote no on gun re: dognapping. there are plenty of dogs, we don't need a gun to get one
― Mr. Que, Friday, 7 November 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)
If we were to make that doggie from scratch, we would blend dalmation with black lab or what?

I'm not a dog person in that I know I'm not suited to looking after one but I would think everyone could agree that something that looks like it is the missing link between poodle and velociraptor is not the cutest thing in the world.
― Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 7 November 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)
Maybe our dog-elect is an australian shepard mutt?

The only time I've ever seen a Bedlington is at an airport x 2 in the guise of medical working dogs. Was actually much cuter than either of those above, but still ugly.

there are visible lines of demarcation in the bedlington terrier's facial hair, a blended cut might look better.

― quincie, Saturday, 8 November 2008 14:10 (seventeen years ago)
that's just hysterical, estela
the Bedlington, like the American Hairless, is appropriate for the allergic. and yes, it is better-looking than all the fugly dogs on this thread except maybe Laurel's sheepdog puppy, maybe because it looks more like a cat or a lamb or an otter or something.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – President-elect Barack Obama says he and his family have narrowed their choice of pet hound to one of two breeds, and are ready to start combing animal shelters to find the lucky dog.

...First lady Michelle Obama tells People magazine that the target date for the arrival of the family pet is after her daughters' spring break trip in April, though 7-year-old Sasha is convinced the dog is coming April 1.
"So Sasha says 'April 1st.' I said, 'April.' She says, 'April 1st.' It's like, April!" said Mrs. Obama, who said she favors Portuguese Water Dogs...
I dunno; Labradoodles are a trend already out there, but this would kick off directed-breed-buying towards PWDs, starting yet another breed trend
