Ugly Cars: A Picture Thread

Ugly cars in general, or more specifically the ugliest body style of long-running names. To start off, here's the 1981 Mustang. Even uglier IMO than the short-lived Mustang II.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 December 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

All cars are ugly.

Tuomas, Thursday, 4 December 2008 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

Lock thread.

Holden McGroin (Ned Trifle II), Thursday, 4 December 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

Not really!

Holden McGroin (Ned Trifle II), Thursday, 4 December 2008 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

The trouble with this, even allowing for Tuomas's objections, is that what is ugly to some or even many people looks pretty cool to some us. So, it seems that the AMC Pacer is mostly reviled but I think it looks pretty cool, crazy, but cool.

What's amazing about the Aztek is that it's been around since 1999(?) and at no time has Pontiac tried to make it look unridiculous.

The Pontiac Aztek is a mid-size crossover SUV that was produced by the General Motors marque Pontiac from the 2001 model year to the 2005 model year.

The white thing is a 1996 Mercury Sable.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 4 December 2008 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

God, the Aztek is like a car ate a car and hasn't fully digested it yet.

I think someone once posted a green version on another thread and I compared it to a velociraptor or something but that's a little hazy now.

i kind of think that '86 unveiling of the fucking Taurus was the point where Ford (and American auto makers in general) just said "fuck it, trucks & SUV's are where it's at. We'll put the 'B' team designers on the shitty mid-priced sedans. I doubt anyone will buy them anyhow."

The current "stealth fighter" design aesthetic Cadillac has now isn't terrible, though I think it'll look dated pretty quickly. I'm not a big fan of the CTS sedan (even though it's a terrific car), but I saw the new CTS wagon at the LA Auto Show last weekend and I think it's a big improvement

There's a salvage yard in N. Alabama that's strictly Fieros. I'll take a pic when I'm there at xmas.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 December 2008 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

I remember having a crush on someone who had a Fiero. A red one. I don't think anything ever came of that crush, though.

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Thursday, 4 December 2008 22:07 (sixteen years ago)

In the HBO show Entourage, the character Turtle had a yellow Fiero in high-school. He blames it for his inability to get girls.

I've always been torn over the Avanti

I've always liked the original 60s-era Avantis, but later attempts to keep the marque going post-Studebaker and increasing NHTSA-hostility weren't so good.

And the ugliest Allegro model ever, the "luxury" Vanden Plas
http://www.channel4.com/4car/media-legacy/featpics/topten/w1allegro.jpg
Basically a standard Allegro with a huge chrome grill stuck on the front. Sort of looks like the kind of thing that teenage lads who customise their crappy cars would do, if they wanted their rides to look a little bit like Rolls Royces rather than Mitsubishi Evos.

snoball, Thursday, 4 December 2008 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

No way! I love the 1970s Renaults, every last one of them. The 16, in particular, was a sheer joy.

http://www.leblogauto.com/images/renault16_tl.jpg

Cf also the Citroen GS and CX, cars that make me weep with joy. (I'm not mentioning the DS because it's a bona fide classic; the later GS and CX are always overlooked.)

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 4 December 2008 23:16 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, the Ka was posted somewhere above. Thank goodness it's not being marketed in the US.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 December 2008 23:16 (sixteen years ago)

The 16 is a cool cucumber!

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 December 2008 23:17 (sixteen years ago)

It's a genuinely beautiful car, and actually has no place on this thread ;)

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 4 December 2008 23:19 (sixteen years ago)

I'm generally anti-chrome, but make exceptions for old, small Euro/Scandinavian cars.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 December 2008 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

The 14 is dreadful. Mechanical and rust problems aside, the back end just looks like the designers got bored and said "oh well, whatever" (Gallic shrug), and drew in that huge bulge. And precisely why I think it's so dreadful is that with a little more thought it could have looked amazing. The view from the side is so almost there, but instead of looking like a sleek shark, it's a beached whale.

snoball, Thursday, 4 December 2008 23:23 (sixteen years ago)

And the complaint about new small family cars - that they all have that same bloated look - starts with the 14. The rot can be traced right back to the pear.

snoball, Thursday, 4 December 2008 23:26 (sixteen years ago)

It sounds like you have issues with this small family car, Mr Snoball. Would you like to talk about them further?

My first car: behold, the 1969 Austin 1800 MkII

Inherited from my grandmother. Tractor-sized steering wheel...big long spindly floor shift...manual choke, UGH...steered like a TANK...resplendent in shiny poo brown.... but goddamn I loved that car. Everyone I knew laughed at it, but all my tall friends secretly loved it because they never had to put the seat back when they sat in the front seat. Deceptively roomy.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 5 December 2008 05:37 (sixteen years ago)

but this is ridiculous! (tremendoid), Friday, 5 December 2008 05:58 (sixteen years ago)

awww. I've never seen so much Austin love in one place. You guys rule.
Back in the day it was hailed as a 'triumph of engineering over design'. Its nickname was 'the land crab'.

xpost David R: automatic transmission entailed a crazy little flip switch on the dash console. Which, given the angle of the steering wheel and depth of the seats, always sounded kinda awkward to me. Not convinced autotrans was the way to go though. My girl was heav-y...you need the guts of the manual tranny to get it over the hills.

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 5 December 2008 06:01 (sixteen years ago)

that citroen rally car looks like someone just took a regular, shitty citroen wagon, nailed a spoiler on the back and slapped on some decals

Er, that's because ... :)

I didn't mind the BX, actually. It wasn't a patch on what came before it, but it was still a little bit interesting, as opposed to the tedium Citroen churns out now. Indeed, this:

http://www.greencarsite.co.uk/GREENCARS/green-cars-photos/citroen-xsara-picasso-hdi.jpg

is a car I loathe so much I barely have the words. There's something about the rear view:

http://foto.autozone.be/fotoseurotax/450/citroen-xsara-picasso-diesel-2004-4475.jpg

that really offends me. And that - ^ - is the kind of view you tend to see a lot, ie stuck in the middle of a road with the brake lights on and the indicators doing something mental, because these things (and apologies if anyone round here has one -- BUT REALLY, GO AND GET A BETTER CAR, PLEASE -- seem so often to be driven by brain-dead fucks in their early 50s, for whom the Highway Code is but a distant memory).

grimly fiendish, Friday, 5 December 2008 10:16 (sixteen years ago)

Chris B.'s choices baffling to me, until I remember his picks for a beautiful car thread on here. He gets major points for consistency, although I think he lives in crazy upside-down land. (Well, ok, the X6 IS an abomination.) More seriously, the Mercedes GLK and the Citroen C6 work a lot better in the metal than in pictures -- maybe you've never seen them on the road?

snoball, Friday, 5 December 2008 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

I was a big fan of the Chevette. My late great-uncle had a P-reg Opel Kadett saloon (the Kadett being the same car as the Chevette, and obviously sporting interesting phonotactic similarities, too; that said I never quite understood the point of being able to buy both Opel- and Vauxhall-branded vehicles in the UK, and obviously GM agreed because they canned that idea in the eighties). I loved it, especially the weird plastic flaps on the rear pillars, one of which opened up to reveal the fuel nozzle.

So in sane right-side up land the Panamera and the Eclat are good looking?

I saw lots of C6s when I was in Europe last year and bulbous back end reminded me too much of the final series of Pontiac Bonnevilles. The new C5s look good though.

But the Prowler - I had forgotten that one. The company I worked for in 1997 did Plymouth's website and I spent a couple days cutting a photo of that car into a nested-table javascript-rollover monstrosity. So horrible:

WTH is it about those Nissan mini-SUVs that causes them to be owned by the most lazy wankers imaginable? A couple of weeks ago I was walking past the corner shop when one pulled up outside, and a fairly young guy got out and went into the shop. I kept walking down the road, and a couple of minutes later I was passing the office of a small ad exec/marketing, when this same Nissan came up and parked in one of the spaces out front. Same guy gets out, and for a second he looked at me before scurrying sheepishly inside. I didn't say anything, but I suppose I did have a look on my face that said "WTF? why didn't you just walk?"

Clarkson and May had a bittersweet goodbye to Saab on a Top Gear segment last year, and quoted someone saying something like "nobody knows why Saabs cost so much until they crash one."

In college, one of my friends drove a '73 trans am that he and his dad had restored, all the way to proper decals and the right stereo. It was amazing, except it didn't start when it was below 50 or above 90. It looked like this:

The newer Toyota FJ Cruisers are based on the old FJ40 Land Cruiser, which is still one of the coolest things Toyota has ever offered. They just made the new version comically large.

BMW's PR department is on point, as usual.

"do you object to it being posted here as an ugly car?"

Well, I think it's beautiful! So, of course it's not ugly!

"your username might produce some cognitive dissonance because the grand cayman based owner, proprietor and to some extent spiritual leader of the ilxor.com forums used to post as 'Haberdager'"

My username is a lot older than any others here or anywhere else on the internet. In the year 872, a Viking king named Harald HaarFager (Norwegian for 'fair hair'), united all of Norway into the first true Viking kingdom. And seeing as how I'm directly related to him, that's been my username on the internet for almost 20 years. I hope the fact that my distant relatives loved to rape and pillage doesn't cause any "cognitive dissonance" of it's own! Ha ha!

"....this oval-shaped radio that couldn't play CDs in 1999 and no aftermarket radio would fit."

I do agree about the radio unit - it's awful! Mine has a couple knobs broken off and I have to use needlenose pliers to turn on heater. Poor design.

FYI that i8 moves like a space panther and turns heads for blocks

Don't disagree on the i8. Would really really like to drive one.

Old Land Cruisers are totally rad. The new one is certainly not the ugliest thing around, but it rubs me wrong. Everything so beholden to the wind tunnel these days.

Hell I like pretty much all those older, smallish-midsize, boxy 4X4s. Are there any from like early 80s that aren't maintenance nightmares? Would love to load up a Trooper II or Dodge Raider and go camping or whatever. Fun!

At first glance I thought I was looking at a real build of this:

SUV crossovers are getting so small im pretty sure they will be station wagons by 2019.

Right column Leftist (sunny successor), Tuesday, 20 March 2018 17:54 (seven years ago)

theyre basically just tall station wagons already, theyre built on car platforms where a ~true~ suv is a truck
