I'm just checking that I have the point of the thread straight, gabb!

I don't know what anti-types I have left. It's kind of like vegetables: I feel like each passing year involves figuring out what's appealing about some "type" I'd never cared for in the past.

Lady Gorgorrand (ENBB), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

there's this girl i'm sort a still acquainted with who went out with a friend of mine for awhile, and after they broke up amicably she started going out with a dude who was borderline-similar to the dudes in that pic. i think he's an amateur rapper or something. last time i saw them was at a party where he got stoned and broke a couple of my pint glasses.

I think those might be the result of piercings being removed, actually!

BTW, gabb, I cave: this thread reminds me that I do have anti-types. I just can't put my finger on them without exceptions popping to mind. I think I need to concentrate on the "wouldn't crush on" part and not start thinking about how I don't mind or hate the type.

Yeah it's not so much Uggs in and of themselves that makes them so awful, it's everything else about the girls on whose feet they're most likely to be found.

this

shamwow 69 (get bent), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe it's just NYC, but I think Uggs are fading as a reference point for this -- I feel like about 40% of people you pass in them are "the type of girl who wears Uggs" and the other 60% are just "girls who happen to be wearing Uggs." (I.e., they have thrown them on in winter about the same way people throw on flip-flops in summer, and do not think they are stylin'.)

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, I shouldn't say maybe that's just NYC; I guess I am pretty specifically talking about downtown Manhattan there

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

Really? I still just see "the type of girl who wears Uggs" in them around here.

Lady Gorgorrand (ENBB), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I've talked about this on other threads, but I still don't get the hate for Uggs. They're boots, who cares. It does seem like most of the hate is about the kind of people that wear them more than the boots themselves.

That said, I can see myself crushing on a girl in Uggs and sweatpants, as long as she was sufficiently cute, but it would probably not be a swoony kind of crush.

jaymc, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:48 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, as a reference point, I was just in the work elevator with a middle-aged woman clearly wearing Uggs in an "it's a little cold and my feet are tired" kind of way. This is totally Manhattan-centric, I know: the only people I see around here who seem to still think they're fly are people who look like they're either visiting or just came here for college.

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

I had no problem with Uggs until some women tried to wear them with shorts a couple of years back.

redmond, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:49 (sixteen years ago)

(elevator colleague was also wearing black yoga-type sweats, a black turtleneck, and a red sleeveless ski jacket, none of this in an "I am trying to look cool" way)

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

uggs are nasty and so are those leggings the young whippersnappers are wearing these days

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

I don't have, like, enormous built-up hate for them, rly, I just dismiss out-of-hand the people I see wearing them. In an "Pardon? Can you repeat that, please? It was drowned out by your footwear" kind of way.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

I regret turning this into ugg debate.

Basically, if i don't like your style, i ain't crushin'.

it almost comes down to cheeks/eyes/style for me, and uggs are an easy target for me to say no on the style front, utilitarian use aside (there are more utilitarian boots out there, and boots that i'm more attracted to)

I have nothing against Uggs, they're just current shorthand for the fake tan and dyed blond bimbo college girls that make up the vast majority of the student body I see daily. Five years from now the same girls will be wearing something different but they'll be the same type of girls and will still be my crush antitype.

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:12 (sixteen years ago)

ian, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

Good lord, these things all so depend on what else is going on with your style / personality / self-presentation, especially given that I'm not sure any of us what agree on any specific "type" that's pinpointed by "wears sneakers." I mean, I could crush on someone who only wore bright-orange Crocs, if this were some charming quirk in a woman so awesome that she could make it seem cool to wear bright-orange Crocs all the time.

similarly, while certain individual fashion choices may be descriptive, at least for some people, of a type, they perhaps fall more into the category of dealbreakers

refer to crush archetypes thread - lots of pics, or in the alternative, more elaborate descriptions

gabbneb, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

Gabb, what don't you like about the Bill Murray girls? I think they are cute.

caek, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

i hate tea-length skirts! but have nothing against girls who sometimes wear them.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

what does tea-length even mean?

ian, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

is "thread police" a crush antitype or just a dealbreaker?

Kerm, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:28 (sixteen years ago)

tea-length hits at mid calf. i find it very unflattering.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

ugh, we had to wear tea-length dresses for all sorts of events in jr high/high school. so much laura ashley wrongness.

lauren, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

I hope a random googler comes along to talk about not being attracted to the type who'd post to this thread

(that is not a diss on this thread)

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

I'd do the Watson Twins. Whereas:

maybe bill murray is the anti-crush, and not the girls

akm, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:43 (sixteen years ago)

Although those guys look really happy, don't they? I can't begrudge them their happiness...but pls do not attempt to involve me in it.

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:43 (sixteen years ago)

i think i turned to dealbreakers (style) because I'm kinda into any and every type. it's in the details

Kublai Khan Paw Paw Chow Chow Chow (PappaWheelie V), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

Dude, Mandee, I will totally take a fashion thread over further ILX work sub-sorting people into "types" based on items they purchase

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

Manddee, I think gab Does Not Want because they are hipsters and look like they will think they're too cool for you.

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:46 (sixteen years ago)

i'm not a fan of the vacant glazed over hipster gaze either but sometimes those girls are secretly fun and genuine and cool

omar little, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

thing is if gabb starts dropping manhattan lawyer money it will no longer matter if he's cool or not

Tanganyika laughter epidemic (gbx), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:50 (sixteen years ago)

Anticrush type: The more-or-less clueless Indian/Southeast Asian guys who seem to be everywhere in Wburg right now? I keep seeing this type around: mostly polite but persistent, which makes the brush off occasionally difficult.

At the risk of sounding like an insufferable "scene girl", why do they try to pick up girls at events which are very much of a partic "scene" that they know nothing about? Seems like it wd be helpful to know your audience.

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:51 (sixteen years ago)

i think the vacant gaze on hipster girls/guys/ppl that you see in pictures is because those pictures are from bars where it is basically part of the deal that you have a vacant gaze because lol u drunk

Tanganyika laughter epidemic (gbx), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:51 (sixteen years ago)

Okay (a) it's a musician promo shot, they kinda have to look like they think they're cool, plus (b) when you have reached the point where you expect people who look like the freaking Watson Twins (i.e., what, girls who own vintage dresses?) to think they're way too cool for you, the problem has become yours more than theirs.

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:51 (sixteen years ago)

this entire thread is about problems becoming more yours than theirs

Tanganyika laughter epidemic (gbx), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

Haha Laurel = rockabilly bigot?

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know who the Watson twins are but I sort of agree w Nibs on that one.

xp Rockabilly not rly my thing but it will do as a stand-in.

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

Could be as simple as: this is a dance night. I am very happily dancing. Why do you think coming over to talk to me when a) I'm busy and b) you can't dance at all, will be more helpful than annoying?

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:55 (sixteen years ago)

because they want sexing

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 21:55 (sixteen years ago)

jmc, do you spell out for yourself (or others) why you do or don't like girls/boys? i don't. also, this thread is not about me.

since you asked, tho, what the hell - #1 could be the most attractive - good color mix - but the hair and makeup are rong, and the affect is pretty unpromising despite the quasi-cheerfulness. i'm guessing she'd seem uninteresting-to-annoying v fast. #2 seems potentially the most interesting/smartest - the one i'd want to talk to - but shallowness is suggested, and while she isn't totally unattractive, the aesthetics are boring at best. #3 could be nice in a quiet way, but at first (and second) glance is simply not interesting at all. (and the blue - is she colorblind or just a quasi-hipster?) she does remind me a little of a hs crush who went from glee club wallflower brain to sorority girl/bigshot lawyer, but mouths like that turn me off, especially as augmented.

xp

Que, the only way they stand a chance is by being about 85% less annoying. The Catch-22 is that the only way I'd find them less annoying is if they stayed about 15' away from me.

did the hipster side of ilx get this racially specific in its snobbery in my absence, or did it always categorize as such and i didn't notice? i miss spencer chow

i mean trying to talk and not dance during dancing times is lame, but is that really a type?

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

Laurel I can fully understand being annoyed with those who can't spot the difference between a dancing-oriented dancefloor and a pickup-oriented dancefloor, but this

Why do you think coming over to talk to me when a) I'm busy and b) you can't dance at all, will be more helpful than annoying?

is possibly overthinking an easily answered question

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:02 (sixteen years ago)

did the hipster side of ilx get this racially specific in its snobbery

Ah, this is me, and I'm sorry because yr posts on that decapitation article thread were v quality and I enjoyed them so I'm sorry to have offended. But Indian guys were zero-for-two with me on Saturday and the same thing has happened a lot lately and I wondered: is that just crazy optimism to go to any club at all and start hitting on people?

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

Laurel, we may've danced together...

Kublai Khan Paw Paw Chow Chow Chow (PappaWheelie V), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:05 (sixteen years ago)

(xpost) On the annoying pick-up attempts front, a guy came up to me at a bar recently and his opening line was to ask my opinion on his sweater and shoes. I really could not care less, and I forget what I said but I guess that was pretty clear because then he went on about how women judge him by his shoes the moment he walks in the door so they really are important and he wants to make sure they look good. Guys who want to talk about their clothes = NOT MY TYPE.

Maria, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:05 (sixteen years ago)

OTOH, perhaps he would've found more like minds among the men of ILX.

Maria, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

(Also, while I absolutely sympathize with the number of annoying, unwanted, occasionally horrifying approaches women have to deal with from men in social situations -- totally sympathize -- I sometimes have a hard time hating on dudes who aren't rude, inappropriate, over-persistent, or creepy about it, because we live in a society where the expectation is for men to go court women, and not all men are good at it, or likable, and what are they going to do, not try?)

Hahaha Maria a guy who tries to use his clothes as a chat-up is a long way from someone who just, like, pays attention to his clothes

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

PW, we've met before! Yr one of my mitten fellows. Do you frequent '60s/northern soul dance parties?

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

Going up to strangers and asking questions about sartorial aesthetics is transparently lame.

a serviceable substitute for wit (Michael White), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:09 (sixteen years ago)

b b b but did we dance togehter???

I occasionally end up at that type of event, but don't seek them out per se.

I just go where drinking + dancing allows me to get lost.

Kublai Khan Paw Paw Chow Chow Chow (PappaWheelie V), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

^ Yes, asking about your clothes strikes me as betraying a social self-consciousness about them that people who regularly wear good clothes tend not to have

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:12 (sixteen years ago)

Well, say something if you see me. I don't think we've run into each other since you were DJing with whatshisface at the place that served pizza.

One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

Although the fact that it was a freaking SWEATER maybe undercuts that -- what kind of sweater does anyone need to ask about? Maria, did it have asymmetrical cuts or weird buttons or something?

nabisco, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think he actually was self-conscious about them, I think he was trying to be amusing or something. (Also, this was in Binghamton, NY, not a place where people get really competitive about fashion.) Really, I don't even know what kind of thought goes into making that seem like a good approach.

xpost - it was just a dark blue & gray argyle sweater. see, he made me remember, anyway!

Maria, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:15 (sixteen years ago)

well at the risk of being even more offensive to any terminal lurkers out there - not me - the crucial question to ask is: were these FOB South Asians, or second generation types?

FOBs directly from Asia have a VERY different dance floor culture, and you kind of have to account for that pre-classifying

Vichitravirya_XI, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

is that just crazy optimism to go to any club at all and start hitting on people?

I would take this extension class.
