Take You Down (I know, right?), Sunday, 14 December 2008 13:40 (seventeen years ago)

Being a cynical Englishman, I expected that first ad to end with the young guy arriving at the house to find that it had burnt to the ground because of faulty electrics. And the ad turns out to be a fire safety Public Safety Announcement. Because those are the kind of ads we get in England.

I couldn't find Sally O'Brien or Its Breakfast time back home

Desmond Decca Aitkenhead (Matt DC), Sunday, 19 July 2009 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

Also, those Richmond Sausages look fucking foul. Are they supposed to look appetising?

Desmond Decca Aitkenhead (Matt DC), Sunday, 19 July 2009 22:47 (sixteen years ago)

However, I think the English have one ad that knocks even the pint of Harp into a cocked hat:

"Last stop on t'round would be me old ma' Peggetty's place, it were like taking bread to the top 'o the world"

Desmond Decca Aitkenhead (Matt DC), Sunday, 19 July 2009 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno, the dementia of the pint of harp ad trumps even the hovis for me. also the way it appeals deeply to raging alcoholism.

I for one welcome this new Nazi ILX (Local Garda), Sunday, 19 July 2009 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

Richmond Sausages (the thick ones) are quite tasty actually. Somerfield and Asda sell them.

pcrutboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 19 July 2009 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

i cannot believe i never looked at this thread

I love rainbow cookies (surm), Sunday, 19 July 2009 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I hadn't realised quite how sweaty the Pint of Harp guy was.

Desmond Decca Aitkenhead (Matt DC), Sunday, 19 July 2009 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

They are always in the reduced section of our local Tesco because no-one actual buys them. They're pretty bland (OK, I bought them, but only because they were like 30p or something).

xpost about crappy Richmond sausages.

I used to drink Harp because I thought with it being related to Guinness it might be OK. I was wrong.

ailsa, Sunday, 19 July 2009 23:04 (sixteen years ago)

It doesn't matter whether Richmond Sausages were actually any good in real life. Surely they could have made them look slightly less foul in the advert?

Or maybe the point is that they looked foul when you were 10 years old but you didn't care because they were sausages?

Desmond Decca Aitkenhead (Matt DC), Sunday, 19 July 2009 23:05 (sixteen years ago)

was it the thick ones or the normal ones?
xposts to ailsa

pcrutboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 19 July 2009 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

I haven't actually watched the advert*, I just like the idea that they stick the word Irish on them and them people go "oh, the Irish are all about the sausages, let's buy those ones", like those crap made-up Scotch whiskies you get abroad that no-one in Scotland's ever heard of (I have a bottle of some mank called "Queen Margot" in my kitchen that I won in a pub quiz in Spain), or Castlemaine XXXX or whatever they don't actually drink in Australia, etc etc etc.

* OK, I've watched it now. If I'd ever seen that advert, I'd have avoided them like the plague, 30p cheap reduced price or not.

xpost, I don't know, or care, really, they were generic supermarket sausagey pish.

Richmond Sausages: we have a packet of these in the freezer. Some people may think that is because I am gullible English person, but no! In town there is a butcher who makes sausages on the premises and they are a thousand times better. Richmond sausages are our cheap go-to sausage when we want to knock together a toad-in-the-hole.

Fat Dog Franklin (snoball), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

kinda feel liek they hint at this whole human drama surrounding his family's closeness, the suspicion that he's been taken by this german woman away from home, the land that was supposed to be his, that he still misses, and that this is just a way of making some sort of symbolic compromise

Lamp, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

eh its like an actual thing that when you are visiting ppl in other countries you are required to bring taytos, and i know from all the polish supermarkets in ireland now that ppl really do miss stuff from home, ireland has a weird relat. w/ diaspora etc.

plax (ico), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

i am nostalgic for all these nostalgic adverts

May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

just lolling at "barry's tea", idk why

r|t|c, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

do irishmen living in england get nostalgic for taytos or is it just crisps in general longing for the further afield

r|t|c, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

they get nostalgic for it, sure and why wouldn't they?

May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

well as far as i have discerned tayto quality isnt that vast compared to yr average walkers and whatnot - certainly not a void on the level of a pole pining for his packet of cup-a-borscht or whatever

r|t|c, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

the taytos u get abroad are a pile of shit

plax (ico), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)

they're not the same, yr import tayto are made in NI to a different recipe i think.

but in either case r|t|c god made taytos on day 7 iirc

May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i mean if you buy taytos outside of ireland they taste like cardboard, but here they really do render all other types of crisps irrelevant

plax (ico), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

cant imagine lyfe without taytos.

i mean barrys tea i can take or leave, tbh, that diaspora thing is just marketing bullshit. but taytos i dunno.

May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

nah that NI thing is mostly bullshit, they are pretty much the same ime. however walkers cheese and onion are fucking appalling compared to any tayto or king crisps....so shit, can't believe rtc can't taste the diff!

(that esb as above is beautiful)

x-post just also to say, don't think i miss anything from ireland apart from decent sausages and i am slowly being weaned onto the british variety.

Michael B, Saturday, 12 June 2010 23:58 (fifteen years ago)

how did you enjoy "the trip to ireland" max?

michael do you mean the denny ad where "it's breakfast time back home"?

I see what this is (Local Garda), Sunday, 13 June 2010 09:06 (fifteen years ago)

I deeply enjoyed myself "local policeman" (via Gaelic). I went, with my grandmother, to the town from where my great great great grandfather emigrated. I also read the first hundred or so pages of Murphy. All in all, I would describe it as a "crack."

max, Sunday, 13 June 2010 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

i have never read any joyce

kindof ashamed

plax (ico), Sunday, 13 June 2010 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

Really though, I had a great time--everyone I met was friendly and helpful and the food, despite what I expected, was great. Good job on your country.

max, Sunday, 13 June 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

bought ulysses a few months back but can't get into it, despite liking musil/broch and stuff that gets compared to him a lot. max it's "craic" tho you probably knew that. "crack" is a drug which is frowned upon in Irish culture.

where in Roscommon was it? my friend's parents have a house in Boyle that I've been to a lot.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Sunday, 13 June 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

i have only been to roscommon to go to hyde park

plax (ico), Sunday, 13 June 2010 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

plax (ico), Sunday, 13 June 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

I was near Boyle in a tiny town called Castlecoote. Very pretty but probably insanely boring to live in.

Joyce is great. But I read Ulysses in college with one of "those" professors and feel like I totally "got" it & by extension "the soul of all Ireland."

max, Sunday, 13 June 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

Really though the reason I "get" Ireland is cause I've seen that Harp ad.

max, Sunday, 13 June 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

you are more irish than the irish themselves

Disgusted to find out she's a Brit. What would my great great great grandfather, John Kerry Regan of Ballyghadoreen, County Roscommon, say?

I just love how the mother in the Kerrygold ad clearly hates the German wagon who stole her son away. In her own head she is a wronged woman who gave him everything, everything, only for him to become bewitched by some flaxen-haired temptress from another country and leave his only home. In his head she is a nagging old biddy who is never happy about anything and he couldn't wait to get away from her. It's the oldest story we have.

yeah like it's beyond just low budget and more into "we gave two guys 15 minutes to do this"

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 5 January 2017 21:14 (nine years ago)

WHAT THEN

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 5 January 2017 21:14 (nine years ago)

plus surely the audience for this bus aren't likely to be people who live locally enough to be watching that ad?

Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2017 21:17 (nine years ago)

I actually know a genuine ghost bus ghost irl. Keeps offering me a free ticket but I've yet to take him up on it

Apparently the tour itself is pretty decent though

i was hoping this lad had done a TV advert

but it doesn't look like it

Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 5 January 2017 21:19 (nine years ago)

i'd voice that for them for a tenner. in one take.

xpost i was kind of always curious about the tour, like i bet dublin has some interesting history you could tie into something like that.

Number None, Wednesday, 3 April 2019 21:51 (six years ago)

specifically with the nostalgia, or the darkness, or just into the pantheon

because im as confirmed in my heterosexuality as i need to be but that lad that talks about the grass and how it makes irish lamb taste special could at least take me out for cocktails

fremme nette his simplicitte (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 April 2019 21:54 (six years ago)

the nostalgia I meant specifically

Lol I fucking posted itt nearly eight years ago, going to die of shame soon.

Was that weird sub genre of post crash emigrant are ecer discussed? Eg https://youtu.be/ct4D63wH8iA - poss not best example but these always felt a bit bleak to me? Your man at home is oblivious and his friend in London just wants to get on with his life?

I think Lyons or Barry’s also had a competition to bring an emigrant home for a visit? I have a photo of it on my Facebook somewhere.

gyac, Wednesday, 3 April 2019 22:04 (six years ago)

Are you even Irish if you don’t have mammy issues though?

That new Kerrygold ad though...omg. Truly Art.

i feel like since the extreme schmaltz christmas ad took off in the uk and since the diaspora began returning this is not such a strong suit for the irish advertising industry any more discuss.

McDonalds, 2005

Your one in the first ad is living in a huge place in New York that the characters from Friends would envy, and all while her sister is getting the glad eye from your man at home, meanwhile your hardworking millennial tiger cub has to fork out for a shoebox in Santry? This is why this thread exists, lol.
