which one is she di?

jess, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ah, not the one i was thinking of. i prefer the doe eyed one more.

jess, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

uhm....i used to want to shag carrie brownstien. does that count?

nancy b., Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Corin Corin Corin Corin Corin.

Carrie's fast & bulbous enough for me, though. Tapered, too.

Daver, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well y'all can fight over corin. i'm having carrie.

di, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dave you can have captain beefheart or corin, but you can't have them both. cos i said so.

di, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

got me.

di, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm going to marry her. who wants to be the bridesmaids?

di, Wednesday, 8 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

me! me!

I very much want to shag Carrie Brownstein, but my gender makes it an impossibility.

Justyn Dillingham, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am sort of in love with her. (in a nice way) i will pretend she likes boys, and if you try to tell me otherwise, i will put my hands over my ears and hum 'youre no rock n roll fun' really really loud

Ron, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what is it like to be 'fast, bulbous and tapered'?????

Ron, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

carrie said "feel free to express yourselves through the medium of dance"!!!!!!!

Ron, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

partly because the band she's in is too predictable and cool.
what about jim o'rourke? I think he's sexy so I'm hi-jacking this thread...

halologist, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

http://home.earthlink.net/~rjameshudson/carriebw1.jpg

NOOOOO!!!! this is for carrie start yr own!!

Ron, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pah! y're just too eaasily pleased.
like she doesn't get "enough" adoration and lusting-over anyway.
mind you it's time I thought of a music-making or art laydee to get the hots for. Any suggestions? They should pref be romantic, tuff, not slim or skinny, like to dance with me and be horny, awkward, and not afflicted with rock-n-roll or "indie" cliches.

haloist, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

she's not goth enough.

jel --, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haloist what about charlotte church!!

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not into kiddies! Plus she is a repulsive bane on humanity and I'd never heard of her til now so make it up to me or I'll throw sand in your eyes and rub salt in your papercuts (this is not innuendo).

haloist, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

b-but she's a millionaire!!??

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and she loves her bum.

RickyT, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what about S*** Monday?

hamish, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Monday = close but not for me. Maybe she's too "feminine". Also I can't get over the disappointment of her CD sucking.

haloist, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Christa Donner is HOTTTTTT (art laydeee)

Ron, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll take Janet thank you very much.

S., Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I very much want to shag Carrie Brownstein, but my gender makes it an impossibility.

ha ha. but i still have no bridemaids. COME ON, PEOPLE!!!

di, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any suggestions? They should pref be romantic, tuff, not slim or skinny, like to dance with me and be horny, awkward, and not afflicted with rock-n-roll or "indie" cliches. i fill four of those categories at least. although you would probably say that i'm not horny enough and too r'n'r or too indie.

di, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah s!! janet is so hot. whenever i see quasi i mostly just look at janet the whole time. i like the way she plays. and she is less shy when performing as quasi than as s-k

Ron, Thursday, 9 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Di you don't need to make a case for yourself as a worthy lust object for me!
hey everybody Di is ten to the seventy ninth times better than all of sleater kinney put together. so move to dunedin why don't you????? (not too many...got to keep the rents low etceteracetera).
and Di is definately "tuff" - it's my new favourite word, from (re) reading "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. Tuff in their lexicon means like cool, rad, awesome. and "kick-ass". And now I will stop before I start writing down my thoughts that are creeping into the territory of questioning the theme of violence in the Hinton books (the four classics - apparently she later wrote some crap ones).

haloist, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so move to dunedin why don't you?????

I am visiting, does that count? Di's kickass quotient is manifestly clear.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 10 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

as they say on diaryland, "woot!". hey cool so i'm tuff even though liz can beat me in an arm-wrestle.

di, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i have one bridesmaid, petra volunteered. the bridemaids get to wear black pinstripe mini skirts, red fishnets, black lace-up fuckme boots and a skivvy. oh and i think lots and lots of eyeliner is in order. red lipstick.

di, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rowr! I wannabe a bridesmaid!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yr in!

di, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hurrah! :-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 11 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jason were you saying you wanted to be my bridesmaid too? sorry i wasn't ignoring you, i didn't see yr post.

di, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

justyn i mean. shit i'm a moron today.

di, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I volunteer to be Di's bridesmaid on the condition that I get to make out with the best man. If he's, you know, gorgeous and all.

rainy, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and another condition is that you wait for my hair to get as beautiful as Ned's before you get hitched.

rainy, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh thank you rainy! okay you can have the best man, if there's a best man. it might be a best woman. or we might both have bridesmaids. but theres always hamish, the flower-boy!

di, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

okay i have 4 bridesmaids. only 6 to go.

di, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

CARRIE!

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 1 March 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

she's the one that makes me feel good, oh oh oh!

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 1 March 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.mirandajuly.com/photos/images/carrie_gsed_web.jpg

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Saturday, 1 March 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

That looks like her last known photo.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 1 March 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(Taken in 1976 in her grandmother's bedroom. And clothing.)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 2 March 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

And she's hot nonetheless.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 2 March 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Cause I'm, erm, straight. Next question?

kate, Sunday, 2 March 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

no - i was talking about the thread in which you, di, say, "i hate carrie brownstein"!!!!

i reckon that photo is actually what she's like. that's - sans clothes, well those clothes - what she was like in auckland in dec 02.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate you're not trying hard enough.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 2 March 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't have to be queer to wanna give her one, such is her power. (but she's only about a 1/4 as smart as she likes to make out....)

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't remember a thread where i said i hate carrie brownstein. was it one where i was whinging about how s-k come off as quite shallow and vain sometimes?

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i just found that thread, it was a joke.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ok di - you're off the hook i guess. i think i wrote to you and said that i hate her too - which i don't really but since she's made herself public property one is allowed to be fickle about one's feelings re her. s-k do come across as shallow sometimes but fuck they are great to listen to as you go about yr daily grind activities - like walking to work and walking home or having a workout. did you get to their concerts?

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

yes i went to both nights in ak, they were fucking brilliant eh. i was dacing right up the front, and other than hanging with heaps of choice peeps (anton, andrew, elisabeth, petrajane, simon etc) the highlights were: carrie smiling at me in the middle of a song, getting janet's setlist, getting janet's autograph, pinching janet's bottom ha that last one didn't really happen but i can dream right?

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah they were great concerts - though the opening acts were suck as and i felt ashamed. i too was at the front and requested that they play 'good things' and carrie called me vociferous. i was in front of corin, who was kinda angry both nights. carrie remembered seeing us at a restaurant before the friday concert and said as we walked into the gig, 'they were at the restaurant'. i think i may remember you - were you wearing a blue dress one night - or was that someone else? but since those concerts i've kinda gone off them a bit cause all their concerts sound the same. janet is the coolest member of s-k.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah - and i answered janet's question about what we call glad wrap and she thanked me for dancing after the concert at the mech table. the second night was better than the first. i made all my australian and japanese friends to go to the other concerts on that tour. actually i better stop cause i hate the power differential involved in fandom.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

hi clare and dianne :-)

ron (ron), Sunday, 2 March 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

hi ron! i have been waiting all weekend to see you here. i feel ashamed that it happened on an s-k related thread...dunno why.

"sadam hussein - snappy dresser or ruthless killer" - just came out of my tv.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, i am here but not saying much

ron (ron), Sunday, 2 March 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

ps - bought and i'm now listening to the black keys 'the big come up' - like it and should have bought it on friday cause i would have had a more rockin' weekend if i had.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a pity ron -did catch yr haiku, however.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i botched that. i am listening to the swirlies, per usual :-)

ron (ron), Sunday, 2 March 2003 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i was wearing a pale blue dress the second night, a pink one the first night. i constantly reuqested they play "fuckin A". oh you're so right about the opening acts, auckland has some shockingly bad bands, don't they? *prepares self for andrew and elisabeth BEATDOWN*. corin did seem pretty grumpy, eh.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 06:04 (twenty-two years ago)

carrie brownstein lovers do it best!

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

could be my fondness for your haiku writing ron, but i really didn't think you botched it at all. as i said, it cut to the chase.

di - i *totally* remember you. i remember yr dancing and that i think you screamed quite a bit - would that be right? also i recall that on the 1st night you were near corin and i heard you say that you thought it would have been great in dunners - i was saying the same about wgtn. your dresses were sorta circa 60s - like i remember thinking that you wouldn't wanna have someone set a lighter on them? i was wearing all black the first night and all blue the second - pale blue t-shirt with a bleeding chess set bishop on it and camper boots. hmm - i remember seeing you chat to carrie after - could that be right? i drank a lot of bourbon and coke that night and my mates dissed me for being a bogan...but it really set me dancing. i was with a girl who was wearing a red shirt - just like the little girl in schindler's list, we thought. carrie kept looking at her cause she's a foxy queer woman and janet took a shine to her too...oh no, it's a kinda fandom again.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

do what di? there are many things i've done best in my life - and many more i've fucked out at. from a certain angle and in a certain light, i look like carrie's sister - though her eyes are smaller than mine.

hey - do you ever visit that freaky fish eric at the dunner's museum? i have a fridge magnet of him and make all my travelling friends visit him and say hi. wanna see him again soon.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

do what di?

umm love carrie?

fuck i'm impressed you remember me, thats so me you described. damm i wish i remember you and yr friend, but i think i was a little delerious at the time. i never ever dreamed i would get to see my fave band play live, in fact there were many times i thought the whole trip was gonna fall through.

i don't remember eric, but duckling used to work at the museum, maybe she remembers him.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh maybe i've placed eric i the wrong cultural institution - he's near the university bookshop. you should really check him out - he looks like an albino's amputated stump. and he has these weird whiskers that look a bit like the bits that stay in chickens sometimes after they have been plucked. if you put your face up to the glass he comes close and looks at you. his face is almost as big as a human face.

"billy joel is an asshole" - from garageland, which i'm currently listening to. not liking it much. changed now - superette.

you were delerious at the time - i remember that too. i thought the whole trip was gonna fall through too. i loved the rain that weekend. funny to think of them being taken to piha in that rain.

do you know the guy who was dressed like the sporty guy outta 'the royal tenenbaums' - with sweat bands on? i ended up hooking arms with him and dancing - he was right there with me requesting 'good things' .

fuck it's hot in wellington tonight. it's 7:48pm and hot damn hot.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

hey yeah i remember that guy!

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

clare do you have AIM, if so please tell me yr name.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, what's AIM. i'm computer illiterate, despite having been surrounded by them most of my life. (no, i'm not on life support.a cyborg). my name's clare... tell me what AIM is.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

clare you need aim

ron (ron), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

its AOL instant messaging. you should download it. ilxers all over the world reccomend it.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

http://download.com.com/3000-2150-10148311.html?tag=lst-0-1

go there and get trillian, unless yr on a mac i guess, you can use it to connect to AIM, where your reward will be talking to me and dianne and all of the other nice folks on there

ron (ron), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

shit if i'm on mac does that mean i can't? fuck i'm hopeless! this computer looks nice but it can't do anything... any advice?

i might need AIM but i also need a bigger keyboard - seen how small they are on these macs? i feel like my hands have been tied together all weekend and i've been asked to do oragami.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

no, you can do it, but you will need some other program than trillian i think. i'm sure the actual AIM program on AOL would work. or surely most any chat client program that you could get.

ron (ron), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.aim.com/get_aim/mac/latest_macosx.adp

??

ron (ron), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

you could use quickbuddy, that way you don't have to download it.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

plus it sounds cute

ron (ron), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i have so many questions i want to ask you, clare!

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

so what's/ where's quickbuddy? yeah it does sound really cute

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.aim.com/other/quick_buddy.adp

try that, but you'll need to get a username first.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ok but i'm downloading that second thing ron posted, at least i think i am. i feel like michael jackson in those race cars he has on neverland, for some reason...

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

okeley dokeley

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah well i think i've done it. i think i'm hermitchapel - but i can't be sure i know what to do next...this is like coaching your mum (mom for ron)...

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm, i'm trying to IM you but it seems yr not responding. yr online now right?

ron (ron), Sunday, 2 March 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh, they're all ugly (tho Janet Weiss peeped me once).

hstencil, Sunday, 2 March 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

HATAZ!!! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 2 March 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

don't make me have to SHOUT FOR THE MODERATOR!!

;-)

ron (ron), Sunday, 2 March 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

They have the advantage of being in SLEATER-KINNEY, lucky them. What does "peeped" mean? And what's wrong w/hataz anyway, they only STRENGTHEN our convictions

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 2 March 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

andrew we missed you

ron (ron), Sunday, 2 March 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"peeped" = chirping like a young bird.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 2 March 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

and so what does it mean? - peeped? - even after that explanation....

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

was janet hot for you hstencil? is that peeped?

there needs to be a swing away from carrie adoration to janet adoration...

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Janet with bangs = way groovy.

Leee (Leee), Sunday, 2 March 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i had a dream about janet last night. she fired a rocket at me at a gig i was at with mary timony, who wanted my ass but i wasn't too sure cause she wasn't so hot in the flesh. i think it was partly great white inspired. janet was wearing a bear suit, which i believe she has done in the past, and then she was in suspenders. hmmm

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I once had a dream back in '99 where I was the "dude" bassist in Sleater-Kinney. It was a very happy one. The ONLY interview I ever did for the radio station here was a phone one with Janet Weiss. She was really great.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i love her accent and her dark dark eyes and skin

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Monday, 3 March 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

quite the fox

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Monday, 3 March 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Janet = v. nice in my experience, as is Corin. I was too shy to say much to Carrie, which might have been a good thing.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 3 March 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I asked her if she liked the Fall, I had my priorities straight!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 3 March 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

answer: CATEGORICAL IMPERATIVE

I. Kant, Monday, 3 March 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha, I don't even remember posting that! Sorry, S-K lovers. Ugly is not a nice word, I apologize.

hstencil, Monday, 3 March 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I once had a dream that I got to see S-K perform live at an outdoors festival and I hung out with them. But it was their original line up, no Janet.

I like to watch Janet drum.

Favorite S-Ker is Carrie though. She's got the moves. Looks all tuff and shit. Best concert I ever went to was S-K in Carrborro in NC.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 3 March 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i really don't think carrie has the moves and daily i discuss this with my flatmate, ms maher. we wonder why everyone says that. she's pigeon-toed for god's sake and delicate, not tuff. don't get me wrong - i'm trapped in a love/hate fandom thing with s-k - but i just think people view her strangely. that shot of her by miranda july (more on her later, no doubt) is what she is ACTUALLY like. do you think she's still chuffed about being compared to pete townsend...with all his internet researching/kiddi porn troubles? i've observed her off stage for a prolonged period and i can tell you this. carrie's ideal partner, btw, has to be 'brilliant' at something and clever and funny...

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Monday, 3 March 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

drat

ron (ron), Monday, 3 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

that's what i thought too - and that's why i have a love/hate thing happening - depends on how i feel about myself at any given point in time.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

pigeontoed is cute though, clare. i bet janet's the tuffest, being a drummer and all.

this thread also needs some coring love. how cool is she in this pic, dressed just like me!

http://www.shemadethis.com/skquiz/corin.gifwidth="324" height="216" alt="Corin Tucker" border="0">
target="_blank">Which Sleater-Kinney Girl Are You?

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yes she IS dressed just like you, di. i can't get that into corin cause she was too too moody in ak. and she told me off for bumping her microphone and she saw me fighting my way to a better position in the front and cause she was concerned that people may get hurt i imagine she didn't like me much. plus she pulled carrie outta there on the 2nd night before i'd got to think about saying hi for enough time to possibly have actually done it.
and god damn it we had *history* by then; carrie and i; i could have.)

(paul holmes is talking about dog bite victims. "the dog went nuts; went psycho")

but i love the way corin wiggles her ass; it's fucken cute and second only as s-k's best concert movement to janet's sideways swishing of her head and hair as she drums banging both sticks down at once. (i'm hoping to inspire ron so that he goes to quasi)

and corin broke carrie's heart - don't forget that dianne. she broke it bad - what do you think all those sad songs are about (good things and a quarter to three to name only 2)? and she wanted to have her bisexual cake and eat it too - what do you think 'one more hour' is about! if you've eva had a broken heart you'll see my point.

pigeon-toed is very cute, i agree.

(plus - corin didn't brush her hair for us. i saw her posing for a photograph in town w/ their bearded roadie and she pushed her hips to one side, which looked funny.)

(janet had silky skin and a very nice accent)

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

plus she's married and has a kid

ron (ron), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

the kid thing terrifies me, frankly.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

they will have such hip home videos

ron (ron), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah. they got married in iceland, i think. he filmed jen and brad's wedding. i think carrie would like that lance is so well connected/'brilliant'.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought "Good Things" was a Corin song. How do you know she broke Carrie's heart anyway? Corin rules, who cares about their private lives.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i think it was a bit complicated. this is what i think happened: corin and carrie were together and then corin felt weird about it and carrie was too intense and corin kinda liked boys too (but carrie certainly did not) and so she kinda broke it off but didn't really let go of carrie but carrie had sorta let go (though she was fixated on corin for ages - in fact still is but differently) and mebbe carrie had another girl for a while (hence 'one more hour') and mebbe she still does but basically it's the usual situation bi-girl situation (corin) and i know this cause i have lesbian friends who have been burnt by bi-girls; they always run to boys in the end. (there may be exceptions)

i have a lot of crap to say on this subject, but was considering writing it elsewhere so shouldn't here.

their private lives may not really matter to you but they do me; they texturise the experience of listening to their music and keep me entertained. i would possibly fall into a coma if i didn't fill my life with these trivialities.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

corin has pretty eyes.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd feel a bit creepy thinking too much about it too much, I mean I don't really feel like it's my business. I can't say I agree w/ yr comment on bi girls - that whole "they'll just run off with boys" thing is pretty cliched and biphobic.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

to be honest it never really occurred to me to analyse SK lyrics for clues about Corin and Carrie: this might make them more interesting. the lyrics are the weakest thing about the band to me (tho they've gotten better of late) and most of them seem vague enough to read anything into. I think this flaw is inseparable from SK's good qualities: better lyrics might distract you from the really brilliant things going on in the songs (duelling guitars/voices, Janet's drumming).

"(there may be exceptions)" re bi girls = understatement of all time.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Clare, do you write slash?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

bi-girls; they always run to boys in the end. (there may be exceptions)

Oh dear

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT? Corin and Carrie were together?? This is just totally fabricated, right? Cuz I don't see it.

I love the way Carrie dances while she plays and she's got the rock poses and facial expression down.

I like the way Janet bounces around when she drums. In Quasi too...

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

elisabeth - the partners of bi-girls may have been safe in the mid-90s but they aren't now - bi's not trendy anymore (thank g-d)

sarah- i urge you to do a google seach; the bones of my comment above will be confirmed as bona fide. (sp) try: carrie corin partner relationship (i always stuff as much as i can into that little window)

justin: you sound like you've read a lot of album reviews. i think some of their lyrics are excellent (except those from s-k, s-k - the first). understating things is a skill, mate, and it's what makes s-k lyrics at times quite subtle/slippery and excellent. nah, come to think of it they don't really understate things.

andrew: i don't write slash but sometimes when i am at a pub and need to go to the bathroom i say, 'i'm going for a slash' even though i never technically am because i have to sit down...i usually write literary reviews or comments on stupid town planning ideas.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone pls write SK slash for us shambling indie boys.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee is OTM.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

well i think i may leee, cause today's looking otherwise very dull.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

justyn - it would be less of an understatement if i said, 'there might be exceptions' instead of 'there may be exceptions'.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Clare that is the best news I've heard this horrid horrid day.

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

can i just start by giving those of you not up with the pace a brief briefing on carrie and corin's relationship from the info google has supplied me during numerous and, actually countless, searches on the topic.

carrie saw corin in heavens to betsy and maybe it was love at first sight - corin was even cuter back then in '92/93 before she molested her eyebrows (as, i note from the 'group' movies trailers, carrie has now done too). they were both at evergreen state and carrie thought, being a classically trained pianist, 'i can do that riot grrl thing too'. she talked to corin at some stage about a grass roots feminist group and they became mates and very soon after lovers. corin was intoxicated by carrie and her tapering body. carrie was in/formed excuse 17. they started writing to a chick called lora in melbourne and corin was quoted in a melbourne paper in dec 02 (while there on tour) as saying that they decided to be famous and packed their bags for melbourne to hook up with their 1st drummer lora, who, i think, was in the sea haggs. lora has said that things got difficult for her cause corin and carrie's relationship started to fuck out and that's partly why she thought s-k had split and was surprised when she saw they were touring 'call the doctor' (i think). so yeah, they were together - oh yeah, and they decided while looking possibly lovingly) at each other over corin's kitchen table, that they would form a group.

and isn't it lucky they did or what the hell would i be doing on this quiet and hot wednesday morning.

maybe we'll get to the steamy action later in the day, when my 'boss' disappears again.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry that chunk above has a horrible horrible tone and should not be taken as representative of my on- or offline personality.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's nice they managed to keep the band together despite that... Sarah, I thought everyone knew about C/C!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

yes andrew, i was surprised that sarah didn't know about the two foxes being hot hot hot for each other for a while. the reason 'call the doctor' and 'dig me out' (mebbe 'hot rock' too) are the best albums (!) is cause they were renegotiating their relationship - santising it, if you will - and it gave them 'material' and 'attitude'. (heartbreak and jealously and possibly, i like to imagine, the odd revisitation of the early passion that always marks the beginning of a relationship and provides an excuse to keep meeting yr ex for drinks after it's all finished.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

clare ownz us.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

hwat does that mean, young dianne?

ownz?

i'm not up or down with that lingo.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

it means you rule.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I am very happy to hear someone else say "Call The Doctor," and "Dig Me Out" represent the pinnacle of Sleater-Kinney's work.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

HOT ROCK!!!

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, probably Hot Rock.

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

but i love 'AHOTBO' and 'one beat' for different reasons; don't get me wrong.

thanks di - i'm happy to have a collection of souls who feel the same. flatmate ms maher is sick to her back teeth with my over-interpretation; she loved it to begin with, but she too feels burnt somedays when she realises she'll never have carrie...and thus sometimes doesn't want to talk about her or s-k.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

if getting with carrie were possible, i'd just use her to get to janet anyway.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

hot rock is the best album of all time because it captures perfectly the confusion and out-of-controlness and emptiness of heartbreak. however i'm utterly falling in love with one beat right now, i can't stop singing it around and around, but my love for it is conditional on the fact that i turn it off after "hollywood ending", i refuse to accept the existence of "sympathy".

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd agree with Di for the most part (don't get me wrong, I love Hot Spot - it's about all I listened to Spring break of '99), but songs like "Banned At The End Of The World" and "Living In Exile" point to the pompous, shrill Sleater-Kinney that would begin to alienate me on later albums (the pinnacle of this being Corin's campy hell-evil songs "Prisstina" and "Milkshake'n'Honey"). There's plenty for me to love on AHOTBO and One Beat, but for my money Call The Doctor and especially Dig Me Out are unbeatable.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of their recent songs I only like parts of. A classic example would be the one that starts off great ("I wanna run away...") but then gets all clompy with the BAAAda BAAdaa Whuu-uuu-ee part (forgive my incoherency, my copy of One Beat is burnt without song titles).

Anybody else notice that the song lengths have gotten pointlessly longer on their albums? The stuff on One Beat is a good solid minute longer on average than on Call The Doctor. I think this is pretty common with bands though, the inability to edit once the world acknowledges your genius.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

but I'm getting off track. They are indeed sexy as hell.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

really? i quite like 'sympathy' - i love the bits carrie sings - i think it's her - the throaty bits. i hate the second song about nursing the baby on the sofa and watching s-11 & 'combat rock' is a bit over-cooked. i love 'oh!' - which is carrie's favourite too.

for consistency across an album i don't think you can beat AHOTBO.

'one beat' is very accessible. AHOTBO is the best title for an album too.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

anthony - how could you admit to owning a burnt copy in this context?!

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

if you mean the lack of artwork re: sexiness context, Clare, I know...I know... I need them pics. But I'm validating their downfall if I buy it...ugh...I'll probably buy it used as soon as I see it there (not that I ever see a S-K album used anywhere).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

'pristinna' is all about making connections in the alternative music scene in the states while seeming cool and collaborative in the process - the fact that it exists as it does, not what the lyrics are saying. the keyboard work is by the guy who wrote the music for hedwig and the angry inch and carrie always likes to stress that she saw hedwig in the run-down theatre where it first showed in nyc; before it was franchised and before the film.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

But I'm validating their downfall if I buy it...

excuse me?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i have these weird b sides that came out at the same time and have the same art work - 'lions and tigers' and 'words..'... can't really remember their names. quite like the art wk on 'one beat' - carrie is trying so hard on her page to appear clever. she's always using mathematical metaphors and she surrounds herself with bingo cards. her house - if its hers - looks like mine in that photo.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

well it's the lyrics, and the way Corin delivers the line "dirty rock and roll" that annoy me. Plus the music goes nowhere. It's an especially ironic number (indie rock=sexual freedom? wha?) in the era of Christina.

I loooove "Lions And Tigers" on that B-side disc. Should have replaced "faraway" on "One Beat."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

b-side disc? elucidate

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

there was a 2-song bonus disc with early copies of the album. My fellow ILXor Carey was nice enough to burn both onto a CD-R for me. They're easily better than the two weakest songs on "One Beat" (whatever they are for anybody).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i pre-ordered that bitch and didn't get no stinkin b-sides. what a rip

ron (ron), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll send you a burn of mine

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

no anthony, the 'word...' one is not good at all, i think. that second song on 'one beat' in which corin bleats about being a mother while s-11 happens is even better than it.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll admit I can't remember what the first song sounds like. But I'll stand by "Lions And Tigers." I'll even HUG it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

well that 'word...' song is a smartypants song about...words. it's stage one linguistics, which, even though carrie is supposed to have done a degree in sociolinguistics, i noticed once evergreen doesn't even offer!

but i still love her, with all her faults.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't evergreen do a "make your own degree" deal? I believe Matt Groening's degree was in punk rock.

Part of me wishes I went their. But I get the feeling I'd be obscenely macho by default or something if I did.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Part of me wishes I went their

the spelling part ;-)

ron (ron), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

or perhaps not?

ron (ron), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

the proofchecking part. I am very aware of my mistakes. :(

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

well the make yr own degree thing would explain the fact that they don't offer what she's supposed to have done.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The word song is "Off with your head" and I lurb it.

Time to hijack thread and ask: SK album art search/destroy.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont like the one beat cover

ron (ron), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-b-but Ron! The back liner cover!

If for only Carrie, here the embodiment of ROCK COOL.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

carrie always likes to stress that she saw hedwig in the run-down theatre where it first showed in nyc; before it was franchised and before the film.

Hey, so did I! (And I didn't really like it.)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that pic is fine

the cover is kind of ass

there's like this kidney/condom thing going on that i don't like

ron (ron), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

One Beat rules as they sound more like Led Zeppelin than ever before (ie. to some maybe "clompy" and "long"). And for other reasons, not that I can be bothered explaining cos I wrote a lot of them out already once for a "review". I love the cover. I have that back pic (not on my album copy, I got it on vinyl) on a bigass poster.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. All this talk of S-K makes me so happy. I hardly know anyone that interested in discussing them any more... I guess because there has been some sort of S-K cult that everyone fears...? Anyway, early S-K albums make me very happy. Sometimes I do get in the mood to listen to later stuff, esp. AHOTBO. I don't listen to Hot Rock too often because it makes me sad. One Beat has songs about 9-11 that get me down too, so I haven't really given that one a good enough listen.

Carrie and Corin were together? But no more obviously. And it's weird - like Janet staying in Quasi after her divorce.

When I first listened to 8 arms to hold you, I felt certain that Louise and Nina were hot for each other. I read all kinds of things into their lyrics. So I guess I've been kind of reluctant to jump to conclusions like that (or even entertain the idea?).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I never got the impression Ca/Co were on like MARRIAGE terms, tho... it's very, very cool they (and Janet) put their bands above personal crap.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe... Or is it just silly? I think they could have made great bands on their own with other people.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, resident stalker clare seems to really have carrie figured out, from her intellect to what she "actually" looks like to the intimate details of her personal life. and all from the internet! i mean, you'd practically think she has even actually met carrie or knows her personally! ain't technology amazing? i'm in awe.

ramona, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

you're so dry & dusty i feel like i'm having an asthma attack as i post this, a few lines down from yr flaky assertions.

i respectfully suggest you read some cultural theory - start with dick hebdige.

did you go to sunday school?

oh - and finally ramona - i really don't think this is the right place to diss opinions gleaned from/supported by the internet!!!!!!

in case you haven't noticed - this place is pretty much underpinned by that material!!!!!!

(you hurt my feelings, ramona, and i'll never fly that high again (and i may not go ahead with publishing my novel) - what have we got if we don't have imagination? can someone put that on my gravestone? i used to want that cure line, 'the air no longer in my throat, another perfect lie is choaked' as my epitaph)

I touched Carrie Brownstein's breasts one time. She was coming out of a house party, and I tried to stop her. My hand accidentally went there. She was still really nice about it, though she certainly didn't talk to me. She's much better looking in real life than in pictures. They all are. They're tiny, and I think they have a drinking or drug problem. Why else would they be crusing college parties?
