That's nice of you to say. :) But seriously, her brother's was so detailed that you could look inside of it and see the ice cream maker, refrigerator, everything. I think it literally included a kitchen sink. Besides, I didn't just finish below his Ted Drewes. I think I ended up in a distant 6th place or something. I have pictures of everyone else's creations (giant Disney castle, awesome White House with UFO hovering above and blasting it with laser, lighthouse on an island with incredibly realistic ocean waves crashing into rocks, and so on), but I would end up derailing this thread.

Special topics: Disco, The Common Market (grimly fiendish), Sunday, 4 January 2009 22:00 (sixteen years ago)

Actually there has been some debate about the time factor. The competition is 5 years old, and I've been there for the last 4. When they first started, they were really fun, one night affairs. We'd have xmas dinner at around 5pm, then we'd get crunked and make gingerbread edifices until midnight or so. It was awesome. Then, things got more complicated. Gradually, people started to build larger creations and spent way more time on it. It turned into a two day competition, and then this year most of the winners spent the better part of 3 full days on it (seriously). This year, everyone was using power tools, myself included.

After this year's competition, we're considering going back to a one night format again. This year my gf and I drove 14 hours to St. Louis, spent most of our time either making gingerbread houses or watching others do so, and then drove back to New York. It really dominated everything.

This was a (I thought) really cool modernist building from family friend Kevin:

http://i42.tinypic.com/287g29g.jpg

Every year, her mom's side of the family comes and votes on everyone's entries. It's like a family reunion every year, with about 60 people voting. It's a blind vote, meaning that no one's names are on there, just a number. Predictably, no one over the age of 40 liked this one AT ALL.

"80s Baby" (Z S), Sunday, 4 January 2009 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

Her entire family got all butthurt over this next one, on my behalf. There is an unwritten rule that all contestants follow, which is that you don't copy someone else's idea, and you try not to duplicate ideas that have been done in past years. Everyone intuitively follows the rule. This year, 2 little kids showed up, and they saw someone doing a White House, and they were all like "oh crap, we were going to do a White House. Guess we'll have to do something else", without anyone even saying anything to them.

Well, THIS GUY shows up to the party, someone's godfather, and he does the exact opposite. He looked at my bridge for awhile, and then he said something like "I was going to do something else, but I think I'll do a bridge instead!" Then he made a bridge that looked a lot like mine. And of course, he did a better job of it. He ended up winning some sort of award for it.

http://i41.tinypic.com/t5kcn7.jpg

He still paid the cost, though. After he left, everyone was like "what a fucking asshole"

You know, I'm not even sure. I have a vague memory of a few fat pretzel sticks bundled together and then coated in icing, but I'm not sure. One rule is that everything has be edible, but when her mom makes the icing, it's so thick that it works as glue.

That really wasn't what I was expecting Burt to look like at all. He looks so... actually um, functional. And, you know, normal. I don't know what I was expecting, but that wasn't it.

I guess I expected, like a Unabomber beard or something, but I guess beards are too hip these days for the genuine misanthrope to wear one.

The shock is, perhaps, that you could be considered actually fairly conventionally attractive. From the amount that you externalise your own self loathing onto other people and youth cultures in general, I was expecting you to look like, well, Dom P or something.

We've Got A Lovebox And We're Gonna Use It (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 24 January 2009 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

they're all just jokes; I live in North Brooklyn. All my friends are graphic designers. I drink PBR. My sexual popularity is also a joke. You think girls are lining up to get with a dude who's favorite hobby is translating Hellenistic Ancient Greek literature?

burt_stanton, Saturday, 24 January 2009 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, girls are nice to me, but that doesn't and shouldn't always equate to BoiIiNG

burt_stanton, Saturday, 24 January 2009 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

feeling like an alienated weirdo, that's true though. American culture = the businessman shark. There ain't no love for ideas for the ideas. That's for those sissy Frenchmen

burt_stanton, Saturday, 24 January 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

Ha ha ha, I just realised that's the most backhanded compliment I've ever given anyone. I mean, I was gonna GIS Slavoj Zizek or something.

In my limited experience, as a girl, lack of "lining up to get with a dude" has very little to do with esoteric hobbies (which quite a few women would actually find a turn on) and more to do with attitude and personality. But hey, this is a total derailment.

We've Got A Lovebox And We're Gonna Use It (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 24 January 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

1997, really? When I think of the Jazz, I think of the seventies.

FWIW, I don't play a Jazz (I find it awkward and it's not really the sound I'm after), but there are shitloads of fine musicians who did and who looked great doing it -- way too many, on both counts, to make a glib comment about it.

tbh you pushed my buttons with the i never really take kindly to dudes telling me shit about a bass line. I recently had to deal with a musician who was copping that attitude all the time. She was totally clueless, and was completely wrecking the whole thing, but if anyone tried to help her out, she would become enraged and say that dudes were trying to sabotage her because she was a woman. It was seriously psychotic, Marissa-level shit.

HUGE variations from state to state, sorry to say.

WmC, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 21:08 (sixteen years ago)

in nz, supermarkets and corner stores etc can only sell beer/wine/cider/etc. only specified 'liquor stores' can sell hard liquor (nz liquor stores are diff from american - they literally only sell liquour, maybe some chips and mixers, but that's it. and there isn't one on every street). alcohol can't be sold between 12-midnight and 7am. alcohol can't be sold on good friday or xmas day.

just1n3, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

shocked also to find out recently good friday is not a big public holiday here - everything closes in nz (think it's illegal for retail stores to open without a special license, and bars have to close)

weirdest thing in cali is how booze is also for sale in drug stores and i notice that the prices are usually pretty good but something about buying liquor from a drug store screams "wino" whereas hitting up the local ralph's at 3am for bourbon seems much more acceptable : /

velko, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 22:12 (sixteen years ago)

not that i really need the convenience these days, but there was something so comforting when i lived across the bridge from Louisiana where you could get liquor, beer & wine 24 hours a day, in groceries, drug stores, gas stations, etc.

Tru but we have 24-hour bottle shops and 3am pub closing and DRIVE THRU liquor which always struck me as hilarious. Esp because of the drivethru near my house, attached to the Dick Whittington pub.

Bottle shop is called Dick Liquor.

Trayce, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

haha louisiana had drive-thru daiquiri bars. i guess since it had a styrofoam top it wasn't *technically* an open container...

but i think you could also get beers and shots to go, iirc. none of may be the case presently.

Califonia has some of the laxer liquor laws in the country. Liquor stores in Washington are basically like NZ.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 23:04 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, and in Washington, all liquor stores are owned by the state.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 23:05 (sixteen years ago)

I hate Washington state liquor stores so much. I miss buying booze anywhere until 2am in Michigan.

☺♑ (joygoat), Tuesday, 27 January 2009 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

As a native Washingtonian, going to SF and seeing hard liquor in every corner store and in supermarkets was an eye-opener for me.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 27 January 2009 23:13 (sixteen years ago)

My mum used to live in a "dry" county in NC; she had to hit a neighbor county's ABC store for booze.

wow, i thought that was just bars! i guess i have purchased just under the wire a few times. i suppose this fact will make leaving easier....

velko, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 03:42 (sixteen years ago)

i remember in rochester the liqour stores had to be closed 1 day/wk but i feel like in nyc that is not the case? pretty sure i've hit up my local one on every day of the week (the odds make it seem inevitable at this point).

tehresa, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 03:47 (sixteen years ago)

i remember back in 83-84 in nyc when i worked at a supermarket that i would occasionally forget about the no sales of beer before noon on a sunday and the manager would have to run over and stop me before i finished ringing the stuff up. i'm curious if this happens out here in california in the middle of the night because people at the register usually aren't all that attentive but the bars are extremely hardcore about the 2am cutoff (in reality, like 1:30)

velko, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 03:55 (sixteen years ago)

i would be willing to swear ive bought beer at 7-11 in LA at 3 or 4 am before

nz bars generally open till 3am, with a significant amount staying open till 6am

just1n3, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 03:56 (sixteen years ago)

i once tried to buy beer in roch at like 11am... i was just doing a normal grocery run and had no idea you couldn't buy before 12. that was annoying.

nyc bars are open til 4, which is great, and also not great.

tell me more about washington's liquor store situation? how plentiful are the state stores? do you have to go way out of your way to buy booze?

still boggles me that sc lets you buy wine in a supermarket, but ny does not.

tehresa, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 03:58 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, max, i'm thinking a lot of clerks are like, "why am i going to enforce this shit for $7/hr?"

My small town (with a rather large university) has exactly one liquor store; over the border in Idaho there are two in a comparably sized town. I can buy beer and wine anywhere but liquor only at this one store and only until 7pm. It's not a major hassle but is annoying, as previously I lived in Michigan where pretty much any store can sell booze.
