I like the Eagles, I appreciate everything they accomplished this season including losing to Washington x2, embarrassing the Cowboys, beating the Football Giants in December, and being another NFC East team playing a horrible game against the Bungles.. and more flying Dawkins. I used to really hate them back in the day but that was because of Buddy Ryan.
I also like Baltimore..

Secure the ball
The Eagles thrive on turnovers and ex-Patriot Asante Samuel holds the NFL postseason TD record for interception returns. Jim Johnson's blitzes are designed to create hurried throws, although that's the one area where Eli Manning has made the most improvement over the last year. The Giants were turnover-free in three of their last four games, with two costly picks against the Cowboys the exception. The Giants haven't lost a fumble since Brandon Jacobs coughed one up in the first Eagles matchup, when two Giant turnovers set up TDs. Brian Dawkins will be looking for strips.

I have to imagine Andy Reid knows from people who have done bad things and need forgiveness. So there's probably at least a bit of charity in this signing, since I can't imagine Vick is going to play much (assuming McNabb'ster stays healthy).
― Mordy, Friday, 14 August 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

from Peter King
And one league source just told me something that surprised me. “Nnamdi wanted to play in Philadelphia,” the source said. More than New York, where Rex Ryan was planning to make Asomugha and Revis his defensive centerpieces? Yes, the source said. The contract is stunning — just $12 million a year for a player who made $28 million over the last two years and was the hottest player on the free agent market. So the source appears to be spot on: Clearly Asomugha would have been offered more by at least one other team. The $12 million annual figure is what the Panthers paid defensive end Charles Johnson this week. Clearly there was something enticing about this Eagles bid, possibly the ability to go to a team with the chance to win the Super Bowl from the NFC.

― (╯°□°)╯︵ mode squad) (dayo), Sunday, 2 October 2011 20:52 (thirteen years ago)
It's hard for me to say whether these are the same problems the Eagles have always had (inability to finish games, stalled important drives, red zone issues, impatience w/ the running game) just writ super large or some kind of new problem. The defense is the worst I've ever seen it, at least since I started paying serious attention to the team in high school. The offense is incredibly talented, but somehow Reid has become even worse over the years at basic stuff, like drawing up intelligible plays or using players effectively. Maybe the problem is that Reid keeps leaning on these explosive offensive players (McNabb, Westbrook now Vick, Jackson) to pick up the slack from his -- apparently -- ineffective gamecalling. And Vick can't be a superstar every week (tho he is often the only bright spot in these games)
― Mordy, Sunday, 2 October 2011 20:57 (thirteen years ago)
at the moment -- and obviously a lot can still happen over the season and they could theoretically still turn it around and even make the playoffs -- this feels like reid's last season in philadelphia

― Mordy, Sunday, 2 October 2011 21:05 (thirteen years ago)
this wide 9 defense is the worst piece of shit i've ever seen and that reid + castillo persist in using it is very telling about the quality of decision making coming down from the top.
― Mordy, Sunday, 2 October 2011 21:09 (thirteen years ago)
also, reid's constant bitching in the post game conference about how we can't blame the defense too much bc the offense didn't score enough was like complaining that michael vick wasn't magical enough this game to bail reid out. maybe the problem was the whole 12 run plays called (!!!!) + mccoy running 9 times for 18 yards, and not vick going 30-for-46 for 416 yards (a career high), two touchdowns and an interception

i didn't post anything on this thread but westbrook retiring as eagle moved me so much. i know it's routine for that kind of guy and i should've known it would happen, but i was still uncertain. i don't know why it matters to me but it does.
― Mordy, Saturday, 1 September 2012 03:55 (twelve years ago)
same with dawkins! but yeah, westbrook was a special player and seemed like a good guy, i probably felt closer to him than any other eagle since i've been old enough to care other than maybe mcnabb obv. tra thomas did the same thing this summer too

As for Vick, Reid said he thought the quarterback was “rusty.” But at no point did he consider pulling Vick and going with rookie Nick Foles.“No, I thought he had to work through it,” Reid said. “He’s our quarterback, so you’ve got to do that. The game’s fast, and it picks up even off of the preseason. He didn’t have any preseason. It’s a fast game. This was an important game for him to get in and play and endure and toughen it out, which he did. That’s what you saw.”

The Eagles plan to lead the league in everything this year. First in yards, and in yards allowed. First in sacks, and sacks allowed. First in giveaways and takeaways. First in questions raised about their own quarterback, and about opposing quarterbacks. First in two-minute warnings (they have that one sewn up). The Eagles are so extreme that if they end up .500, it will be with a 16-16 record.

You know, Juan's seeming like the nicest dude ever has made it really hard for me to come to terms with how frustrating this defense has been, but after this week's "yeah, we're kinda dominating Calvin Johnson TOO much, let's mix it up a bit so he doesn't get too comfortable being dominated", I think it's time for a change. So sick of watching this defense play well for three quarters and then just shut the fuck down for the 4th.

I predict that if Kelly gets the organization, assistant coaches and players to buy into his system enthusiastically, you'll see some damned exciting football next season. The biggest resistance may come from older veteran players with a lot of mileage on their bodies, but who still are starters. The new pace is really going to challenge them.

They asked him about Vick. He gave a non-answer. I'm sure Vick is done in Philly.

“I’m all in,” Kelly said, obviously unaware of how often that term has been used during Eagles press conferences. “I think it was Cortes who burned the boats. I’ve burned the boats so I’m not going back. I’m in. I’m an NFL coach, and this is where I want to be. If there was any indecision in terms of [not wanting to be in], I wouldn’t have made the jump.”
An insensitive Cortes reference? I think he'll fit in fine in Philly.
― Mordy, Friday, 18 January 2013 15:04 (twelve years ago)
Cortes did burn his boats. Other than the fact that Cortes had all the tender-hearted humanity of Atilla the Hun, I'm not sure how acknowleging an historic fact is especially insensitive in this instance.

i saw that good brown piece on grantland. if kelly came into the league and only had 1 trick then he would be back out pdq, so i think the selection was v positive for eagles fans. we'll see if he can win nfl games, but he at least seems to have the right kind of intent and ambition about him.

― Mordy, Wednesday, 1 May 2013 23:55 (twelve years ago)
Kelly has thought about and implemented his offensive system for over a decade. He is very definite about what he wants and why. He isn't just working a gimmick. If anything, he's taken a basketful of gimmicks other people invented and saw how to integrate them. Give him three years to get his personnel adjusted to his system and we'll see if it wins against NFL defensive schemes.

Earlier in the week, Celek said: “We were just high-fiving saying, ‘good luck on the other side’ type of thing. We high-five on all those all the time.“It’s kind of part of that play, gotta give him a high-five on the way to the route. Good luck on the other side.”Today, Kelly added: “They like each other.”The Eagles were using the mesh concept. Back in the day, 10-year-old Sheil called this one “cris-cross” when he was playing football in the neighbor’s yard. The idea is simple: When the defense is in man coverage, two receivers run crossing routes, create some traffic, and hopefully one runs free. So why the low-five?“So there’s no defender that can come in between ‘em,” explained Zach Ertz.Apparently it’s as simple as that. The two players want to maintain spacing so that they don’t run into each other, but they want to be close enough so that a defender has a tough time sneaking through.

Being from Philadelphia, as well as being in Philadelphia right now, is torturous for me. Everyone is so happy, and all I can think is “everyone is happy about the contemporary equivalent of the coliseum, an imperial sport driven by toxic machismo.”
i can’t lighten up about this, and i can’t muster even an iota of compulsory enthusiasm. i fucking loathe football.

― Iza Duffus Hardy (President Keyes), Monday, 27 January 2025 15:13 (six months ago)
I never said anything about sneering at anyone. I don’t talk with people about football, and am pretty open about that if they bring it up. I just say, “I don’t know anything about football, and I don’t watch it.” That’s not sneering, it’s honest.
Sorry to have an opinion ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
― butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Monday, 27 January 2025 15:51 (six months ago)
well here's my opinion. yes Eagles fans are more obnoxious and unpleasant than most but they are real freaks for their team. I mean their lives revolve around this shit. so I can't resent them. secondly it's hard to remember a non-QB who clearly deserves a ring more than Saquon this year. the NFL is so full of disasterous deals and half-serious franchises, its kind of heartwarming to see the Eagles go "we're good but not good enough, we're gonna break the bank and do what needs to be done" and have it actually work out...things so rarely actually go that way
― frogbs, Monday, 27 January 2025 15:59 (six months ago)
watching saquon this year was like watching someone in the olympics. so beautiful.

frogbs, i don’t resent the fans so much as i resent the seemingly compulsory enthusiasm.
Keyes does have something right, admittedly— there is probably a root in my young teenage self that resented and rebelled against what i felt was compulsory behavior. i don’t see this as necessarily a bad thing, except when it comes to the sneering part— i don’t sneer at people for getting enthused about something as trivial (to me) as pro sports. good for them, i just don’t share their enthusiasm.
i do sneer at compulsory displays of patriotism and etc, because fuck that hogwash.

After the last several years of constant hype and non-stop appearances in tv ads, it was great fun to see Mahomes and KC go down in flames, completely humiliated in the most public way possible.
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 10 February 2025 19:02 (six months ago)
Eagles didn't blitz a single time? that's insane. yeah it's fun to see Mahomes eat shit but there's not a single QB in history that could perform well against that sort of pressure if it's not coming from a blitz
I'm curious how exactly that happened. their OL has been their Achilles heel all season but they haven't been that bad
― frogbs, Monday, 10 February 2025 19:08 (six months ago)
i don't think i've ever seen the mahomes chiefs play that bad. or seen anyone play that bad in a super bowl. it was like they were all asleep. i love that an eagles defense looked that amazing on the world stage. a rough philly D such a time-honored tradition in that town. a town where the defense is as beloved as the offense. i hope that my hero brian dawkins shed a tear last night. or reggie white in football heaven.
― scott seward, Monday, 10 February 2025 19:11 (six months ago)
even wilder given they had a bottom 5 defense last year, between that and Saquon I appreciate a team that's a contender but not quite there doing the things it takes to get over the hump. the front office straight up went and won the Super Bowl. god how I wish the Packers would've done that, though in retrospect a lot funnier that Rodgers only has the one ring
― frogbs, Monday, 10 February 2025 19:14 (six months ago)
It felt like in the second half Mahomes finally realized, well, I guess it's all up to me or nobody.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 10 February 2025 19:14 (six months ago)
the way that they were hurrying mahomes had me laughing. hoo boy. he knew his goose was cooked. are they going to fire that entire offensive line now? you can't leave your cash cow that unprotected! he could have ended up in the hospital.
