brains, hand-rolled (gnarly sceptre), Monday, 23 February 2009 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

UFC 96 is tomorrow! Here's the main card

* Light Heavyweight bout: Quinton Jackson vs. Keith Jardine[2]
* Heavyweight bout: Shane Carwin vs. Gabriel Gonzaga[3]
* Welterweight bout: Matt Brown vs. Pete Sell[4]
* Light Heavyweight bout: Matt Hamill vs. Mark Munoz[5]
* Lightweight bout: Gray Maynard vs. Jim Miller[6]

Jackson looked AMAZING in his KO of Wanderlei Silva, but I kind of feel Wandy might be washed up. Jardine has an iron head, but I say Jackson KOs him in 2.

Carwin I haven't seen much of. No one has! His fights have all ended before the second half of the first round, and he's undefeated. Gonzaga's been a fave since his left roundhouse came out of nowhere to send Filipovich back to the minors. He's looked good recently. This is tough to call, but I'll say Gonzaga by sub.

Not very familiar with either Sell or Brown. Two TUF also-rans according to wikipedia (I don't follow TUF, reality shows annoy me.) Let's say Brown by decision.

Hamill's tough but kind of one-dimensional. Munoz seems to be a meat and taters wrestler, too, from his wiki article. I'll say Hamill by GandP.

Don't really know much about Maynard or Miller, either. Miller seems to be the jiujitsu guy, so maybe he'll get a choke or something.

Evans is still undefeated. His next title defense will be against whoever's the top contender after tomorrow's Jardine/Jackson match. If I'm right and Jackson wins, I'll have to wait to see him against the guy who I think would give the best challenge, Lyoto Machida.

Lidell's next match will be against Rua, who couldn't even finish off Mark Coleman, who is 100 years old.

Thrills as Cheap as Gas (Oilyrags), Saturday, 7 March 2009 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

oops, Rua did finish Coleman. My bad. The both looked like they were going to fall over without getting hit for about 3/4 of the match, though.

It's officially Evans vs. Machida. This is going to be really interesting!

Thrills as Cheap as Gas (Oilyrags), Saturday, 14 March 2009 02:48 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to say Evans, even though I fucking LOVE Machida. I don't think Machida has had to deal with a wrestler of Evans' strength and skill, and although their ability to land counterpunches is about equal, Evans has more power. If Machida wins it'll probably be surprising Evans with a submission from his back.

Ahh that's too bad. I would like to see that fight. In the meantime, some lols from Sylvia:

http://affliction-mma.com/?p=803#more-803

The main event at MMA’s Adrenaline III ‘Bragging Rights’ last Saturday night (June 13) wasn’t without drama. Tim Sylvia was matched up against former WBO World heavyweight boxing champion, and Olympic Gold Medalist, Ray Mercer.

The bout was originally meant to be a boxing match, however the athletic commission changed it’s mind at the last minute and declared the fight illegal. The fight still went ahead as Mercer agreed to fight Sylvia under MMA Rules with a verbal agreement between the two to stand and ‘box’.

Sylvia was quick to break their agreement coming out throwing a leg kick, they measured each other up then Mercer threw with a big right that made Sylvia stop dead for a split second, then fall like a tree! The fight was over in 9 seconds.

Can somebody explain to me what the deal is with the Silva/Maia fight? (I haven't seen the entire fight, so maybe it'd be obvious if I had)

I can't really figure out why everyone is so mad at Silva. As far as I can figure out, Silva was annoyed at the low quality of the fighter that they pitted him against, so instead of just Maia out in the first round, which he apparently could have easily done, he just kind of stood around doing nothing for five rounds. First, what does this prove? Why did he do it? Second, why is this considered some kind of horrible thing to have done? It makes for a boring fight, sure, but isn't it really the UFC's fault for not putting a good fighter up against Silva in the first place?

Dan I., Sunday, 11 April 2010 00:02 (sixteen years ago)

oops, should have said knocking Maia out in the first round...

Dan I., Sunday, 11 April 2010 00:02 (sixteen years ago)

lol silva. as much as i was not surprised by this fight, at least silva was more entertaining than with leites. perhaps that was just because maia tried harder but the fact of the matter is that maia wasn't a good enough challenger. i would rather see silva embarrass his opponents in this manner rather than just grinding it out on the mat. dana can bitch all he wants but a fitch-like grinding style is far more painful to watch. if dana were smart, he would play up silva as a heel and pit him against gsp, but i think dana is afraid that silva would defeat gsp too in this manner.

tonight was a bad night for bj penn, and a good night for the ufc and silva if they want to play up his heel status. if it's good enough for lesnar, why not do it with silva...

Q: When can fans get Fedor's Tapout shirt:

A: I'm afraid to disappoint the fans, but it seems like, never. Literally today they called me from the TAPOUT firm and told me that they were contacted by the representatives of the UFC, and that under the threat of tearing up all the contracts with their organization demanded that TAPOUT categorically stop producing all the shirts from the line of Fedor Emelianenko.

This is how Dana White feels about Fedor. So tell me, what can we think about such person after this, that even in things that have nothing to do with UFC, he still tries to mess it up for us. So it seems that the shirts will just stay a rarity that fans will see in pictures. Say thanks to UFC and their politics of monopoly.

Brock is a freak of nature but a terrible fighter. Glad to see Cain get the win that Shane really should've had. Turtling up is a shameful defense and anyone stanning for Brock is nuts.

jeff, Monday, 25 October 2010 07:18 (fifteen years ago)

The boy's a decent wrestler but yeh, he needs to work on his defense from his back, he's been undone the last 2 fights from that. And I guess he could work on his striking. Just being a freaky guy by itself doesn't guarantee success (remember Bob Sapp?) and he's definitely got skills, but he's got a lot of work to do. Does he get a rematch or is it straight to Cain vc Dos Santos?

Glad to see Diago Sanchez back in form, he's an exciting fighter when he's on.

I'm being a smartass here, but in a fun way (NotEnough), Monday, 25 October 2010 07:54 (fifteen years ago)

http://i53.tinypic.com/2j3fk84.jpg

Just watched the fight again for the third and fourth times and it really is a thing of beauty. Cain completely dismantled Brock and exposed him. I've been a pretty vocal critic of Brock but I must say that even I gave him more credit than he deserved. Kudos to Dana for the hype. I really wonder if Carwin would be the champ now if Herb had called the July fight.

Also, can I just:

http://i48.tinypic.com/xg01l.gif

jeff, Monday, 25 October 2010 08:41 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry to go over old ground, but the idea that Brock got lucky in the Carwin fight doesn't seem right to me. Carwin had no cardio and didn't pick his shots, and he got exposed in the 2nd. Cain didn't make the same mistakes, didn't have a cardio problem, and gave lesnar one hell of a beating, showing up his inexperience.

If memory serves, the 2nd Mir fight wasn't the dude getting lucky either - he dominated that fight, and you don't get results or performances like that one by being a complete chump.

I'm being a smartass here, but in a fun way (NotEnough), Monday, 25 October 2010 12:02 (fifteen years ago)

Carwin had no cardio because he was hammering Brock's face for three plus minutes straight. Yeah, he's guilty of not picking his shots, but you can't blame him for overexerting himself when he saw Brock's turtled up.

Not really worth defending Mir cause he shows up for some fights and not others. That bike crash really did a number on him.

Kinda just wanted to post this:

I guess Maynard has to think he was robbed, but I thought giving all four of the last rounds to Edgar would have been acceptable, even if you made the first 10-8.

10-point must needs to go away for a sport where fights are 3-5 rounds.

that's why anyone calling for a 10-7 is a maniac.

i think the only way Edgar gets the 3rd and 5th rounds is with some serious champ bias which he definitely didn't earn after that 10-8 1st round and apparently didn't really earn in the media after controlling BJ twice. should be a good rematch. feel bad for Edgar and Pettis though.

Jones is a beast. It's a legit argument between Silva, Jones and GSP at this point for best P4P guy in the UFC. Silva probably gets it, but Jones has absurd reach, it's like watching a praying mantis fight.

Too many slug-fest "wars" for me lately, too many fighters whose skillset is now gunning for the one-punch KO. I like well-rounded fights - the drama that comes from the possibility of the fight going to the ground at any time, etc., fighters working for chokes and submissions when they are on the ground.

A lot of the best fights are lower on the card or in prelims so I just wait to hear about them and then download it.

been waiting for a piece like this. the whole world seemed to be experts in women's fighting overnight, then couldn't comprehend it when its supposed GOAT lost

k3vin k., Tuesday, 17 November 2015 02:13 (ten years ago)

The truth was we had no idea what we were watching, or how to evaluate it. But for many reasons — an eagerness to seem progressive, an addiction to vapid celebrity culture, the headlong rush to avoid being left out of a major story — everyone was afraid to admit that maybe, in Rousey’s case, there was nothing to be seen.

ESPN anointed Rousey “Fighter of the Year” and “Female Athlete of the Year” for a period in which she had spent a total of 30 seconds in the ring with two hopelessly under-qualified opponents in a sport that still significantly lacks history and development of its ranks. The idea of her being a better fighter than Floyd Mayweather, or a more exemplary female athlete than Serena Williams (who was in the midst of a 28–0 run and had won every major title in one of the most popular and competitive women’s sports in the world) was laughable, at best. But the manufacturers of celebrity and the branding agents weren’t about to let reality get in the way of their latest pet project, and the fans were more than happy to buy what was being sold.

k3vin k., Tuesday, 17 November 2015 02:15 (ten years ago)

man, this is a fucking fire piece

lol that's the same dude that wrote the fake Mo Williams thundercat article

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 08:18 (ten years ago)

Article kinda ignores the little detail that Holm fought brilliantly -- really, really brilliantly. Sort of the way that the sporting press kinda ignored that Buster Douglas beat Tyson with his relentless jab more than Tyson beat himself. Rousey had to get in close to have a chance to win, and Holm methodically and powerfully made sure she didn't go in without getting hurt or frustrated.

Three Word Username, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 08:29 (ten years ago)

Article wasn't so much about the fight afaict

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 08:52 (ten years ago)

I found this, link hopping from the deadspin article and it is definitely something
https://streamable.com/gtdl

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 09:40 (ten years ago)

No, the article wasn't about the fight, but it did argue that the fight showed that there is nearly nothing behind the hype about Rousey. And I don't think the fight showed that. The "best there ever was and ever could be" narrative is almost always wrong, but Rousey is an excellent fighter. She get beat by a better one.

Three Word Username, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 09:55 (ten years ago)

I'd have to say it did show it. The point was, we don't yet know what it means to be a great fighter in the context of women's UFC, yet we pretended we did. Her talent is undeniable but if we're unable or unwilling to even try and give it the scrutiny it deserves then the hype is disingenuous and empty.

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 10:25 (ten years ago)

I would argue that we did see great fighting -- from Holm. I do agree that there isn't a lot of clarity on what great fighting means in women's MMA and what is involved -- I read an article from an apparently respectable publication that wrote "Holm only has an inch more reach than Ronda!" as if an inch weren't a goddam mile when you are dealing with a skilled boxer -- but I think we saw the other night that the way to greatness has more to do with brains and fitness than pro-wrestling/Rocky IV-style fire and passion. Holm taking Ronda down and then letting her up again with the quickness was a brilliant move, and also demonstrates that Holm for one knew she was dealing with an awesome grappler.

Three Word Username, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 11:01 (ten years ago)

Yeah Holm was phenomenal (most sites give her a 3 inch advantage at 69" vs 66") but even in that we were sold a lie and were too eager to buy it and then continued to buy it even after it was revealed to be false. The fight wasn't an upset as it's being characterised, firstly that implies an overturning of the odds within the fight itself which was anything but the case and also because outside of the hype, we had no idea how they would match up or how good Holm actually was and didn't respect either of them enough to actually interrogate that.

Firas Zahabi posted an amazing breakdown which was promptly taken down but rescued by reddit people https://www.reddit.com/r/MMA/comments/3t5fb2/video_firas_zahabis_fight_analysis_ronda_rousey/
Goes into detail about her posture, discipline and how she was able to avoid the clinch with apparent ease

tsrobodo, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 16:23 (ten years ago)

That's a grappler's analysis, and it sure wasn't a grappler's fight -- I did find it interesting, but incomplete (then again, I used to box).

rip Kimbo Slice, age 42

medical margarita (rip van wanko), Tuesday, 7 June 2016 04:10 (nine years ago)

his recent fight with dada5000 in bellator was the worst bullshit ever--kinda fucked up that dada and kimbo were both medically cleared and dada ended up nearly dead in the ring (and then was medically DEAD in the hospital that night) and kimbo died three months later. by all accounts he was a chill guy and put his health and his life on the line paying his bills in a tough tough way.

dylannn, Tuesday, 7 June 2016 12:38 (nine years ago)

reading about this on the train today, i wondered if anyone in my car, on the whole train cared about kimbo.

as stunning as the backyard fights were, he ended up a joke, whose professional career exposed his lack of skill. the majority of kimbo’s professional fights were like... he lost or it was fixed.

his boxing career was cans and no-names, fighting a guy who was 39 and had a 0-1 record and the fight was in a casino in miami, oklahoma.

in mma, even in the debut against against bo cantrell, there were suggestions it was fixed-- doubt it: cantrell was in on short notice, looked soft, and maybe bas rutten shouting at kimbo for a few hours helped him put a few things together. the elbow he rocked him with looked deadly. but tank abbott, dude was never more than a particularly scary nightclub bouncer who was already deeeep in the twilight of whatever he had made out of his career, fighting kimbo on the tail end of a 1-8 slide, made it 1-9. it eventually came out that abbott took that fight and a big payday with the promise to keep it standing, not clinch, not take it to the ground. once he made the ufc, houston alexander took him the distance in a boring as hell fight. and then mitrione FUCKED HIM UP at ufc 113. kimbo actually took him down a few times, got side control, but didn't go for anything dangerous on the ground and was nearly submitted before being saved by bell at the end of the first. kimbo muscled out of dangerous situations on the ground but gassed badly and could not answer back with anything. mitrione eventually got tired of punching and the fight ended with mitrione riding kimbo, curled in the fetal position.

the fight with shamrock was either fixed or another example of a marginal mma promotion tossing its elder statesmen into the furnace. the final fight with dada 5000 was a disgrace. don't even bother watching highlights, if you've never seen it. dada ended up flatlining that night in the hospital. kimbo dead a few months later.

it's fucked up, the bullshit fights and going out like this. because he was like a folk hero or something some limewire urban legend. i'm sure i heard about him knocking out big d's eye before i ever saw them square off in a shitty backyard in south florida, clinch up against a satellite dish. and he never even knocked out big d's eye, man. just cut him up a bit. but that's what i mean. i bet i heard about as many kimbo slice fights as i ever saw. i bet i was related the details of kimbo slice fights that never actually happened. he wasn't fighting real challengers but he looked dangerous and slick.

slick and tonsured, a cipher, never heard him say shit except "you done?" when reaching down to help up his downed opponent. when you finally heard him talk, on the ultimate fighter, he was surprisingly thoughtful and reflective. "will i ever lay kimbo slice to rest?" he seemed humble, aware that he was going into the deep end, begging to be taught the secrets of brazilian jiu jitsu and how not to get taken down and fucked up by more well rounded fighters.

i don't know. it's not like his story is unique, lots of dudes with brawled up from streets/injured lost shot at pro football turned to fighting legends out there. he never retired and hawked a line of barbecue sauce lines and instagram product placement and never showed up on yo gotti mixtape skits or whatever, he kept trying to fight for a living, even when he was most safe or could at least transition out of the fight game, i hope. he was still shooting gear and trying to line up a fight with wanderlei silva. r.i.p. kimbo slice.

Just hours after Conor McGregor and his friends stormed a bus carrying Nurmagomedov and other fighters competing on Saturday’s UFC 223 card in the Barclays Center loading dock, Nurmagomedov said he wasn’t impressed by Team McGregor’s antics.

“I am laughing inside,” Nurmagomedov said. “You broke window? Why? Come inside. You know UFC don’t let you come inside. If you real gangster why don’t you come inside?

“This is big history gangster place. Brooklyn. You want to talk to me? Send me location. We have to talk? I am gonna come, no problem.

“I grew up like this. I don’t grow up throwing chairs at window. This is not my bus.”

I’m going to have to get back into watching ufc now

Dana White looked/sounded legimately furious, plus two fighters not involved are injured and one had to be pulled from the upcoming fight

White mentioned multiple lawsuits and McGregor is being charged in NY, his plane is grounded

Maybe McGregor is such a dumb shithead in his mind it was a stunt, but the UFC I don't think was involved. Apparently McGregor has a website called Mac Life and some of his credentialed journalists opened the doors for his gang, such an insane story.

He's really such a stupid racist piece of shit I keep imagining if a black athlete did this Trump would have called in the national guard.

Biggest thing though is he's pretty fucked in the long term. At 29 he's just squandered years of his prime on not fighting then getting beat up by Floyd Mayweather. This will eat up at least a year, if he gets back in UFC. He'll be on the wrong side of 30 not having fought in like 4 years.

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 6 April 2018 12:18 (eight years ago)

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 6 April 2018 12:24 (eight years ago)

This is current story from ESPN, though I guess I don't know if there's a distinction between being charged and a warrant?

New York police have charged UFC star Conor McGregor with three counts of misdemeanor assault and one count of felony criminal mischief after he turned himself in following an incident Thursday in Brooklyn, according to the New York City Police Department.

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 6 April 2018 12:42 (eight years ago)

my guess is at the original time Dana claimed there was one, they hadn't gotten that far yet, but that White knew charges were likely coming.

figured he'd eventually get pulled in for that. no idea what he was thinking.

my way of looking at it is he lost a boring fight to an unlikeable opponent whose performance was booed throughout the early rounds, even less likeable following the events after the fight (could be tolerated by a brash american but looks goonish from dagestani thugs). would love to see the third fight with nate diaz now.

That fight wasn't boring at all - Khabib put in more work on the ground than GSP did in his last 15 fights. A clinic on sapping someone's will to live, so many shots of Conor looking confused and hopeless - I got one foot free OOPS no I didn't.

The brawl afterward was dumb but fuck it, the UFC has embraced its WWE-ness so much they could have dropped an extra cage over the top and no one would have batted an eye.
