The Isley Brothers - This Old Heart of Mine (Is weak for you)

(thought it was time for a new music thread, hope that's ok! :)

jel --, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Some dull as oatcakes tech house thing my colleague James is playing on the office stereo. It's so boring I can't even be bothered to find out what it is. It's been on for six minutes and done absolutley nothing. Oh, no. A snare just came in. Thrills.

Anna, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The whir of the air conditioning. The sound of the matches I am using to keep my eyes open snapping.

Emma, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eminem on the radio as I make a coffee and walnut cake.

Before that - Talk Talk - 'stump'

sean, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This Morning without Richard and Judy. I can't see it though. Nickie is watching it properly.

N., Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The wind through the trees and the tiny tippy tap of me and my minions keyboards. We are both very busy. (Well obviously she is busier than me cos I'm here, but I just did a bank reconciliation in record time and am putting off sending the income tax year end thingy).

Pete, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete is listening to IDM!

jel --, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

M/A/R/R/S - Pump Up The Volume, which I just got off Filepile.

Tom, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

V/A - More Bass Culture.

Volume 2 of the Ian McCann selected dub compilations. This one's mainly King Tubby and is the best album I've bought this year. It's fantastic.

Dr. C, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At the moment nothing but the incessant buzz of the office and silly people on the phone. The last thing I listened to before coming to work today was Hana by Asa-Chang & Junray which I picked up from the Post Office yesterday (it was sent to me rather than the Highgate Near the Station branch going horizontal in the products they sell).

Jonnie, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RickyT, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A work colleague designing a new computer system for the University, for telephone calls to alumni asking for donations. I'm heckling, suggesting that the system should record a call as a 'telebeggar' 'soliciting' a 'sucker', but he keeps using different names.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The comp CD from the last issue of Robots and Electronic Brains.

jel --, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't listen to music at work, its not that kind of office, but in my head:

A song by Herman Düne, remembered from last Friday, called something like Going To The Everglades, with a gloriously simple descending lead guitar line. The song name-checks the scratchy 1957 Silvertone guitars the brothers play. They also covered Kylie's Can't Get You Out Of My Head, a cut-down version that ended up sounding like a Jewish folksong.

David, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's put it on again! Why? It's just a bloody drum loop.

(Sorry about going into rant mode)

Anna, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing new. radio. WANT NEW STUFF NOW

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's put it on again! Why? It's just a bloody drum loop.

Do you ever think that a dance music magazine is not the best place for you, Anna? ;)

Tom, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, ObAnswer: "Sex" by Scritti Politti. Bit of an over-egged pudding but the bassline's terrific.

The Theatre Of Eternal Music

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Again, no music in office. But co-worker Mike bought a tiny radio from next, so before it started raining in the park (NB as soon as we are soaked back in the office the sun shines like a fcuker) we listened to the MOST ROMANTIC SONG EVAH: Perfect Gentlemen by Wyclef.

Sarah, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah and Mike sitting in a tree, Pole D-A-N-C-I-N-G!

RickyT, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's see, the sound of the cars on the distant(ish) highway, some birds...it's 6 AM and everything is very peaceful. :-)

Arik Einstein: Yerushalaïm Shel Zahav

stevo, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've just listened to Amanda Roocroft belting her way through Richard Strauss' Im Abendrot (Vier letzte Lieder - 4th song). I'm using this as inspiration for the vocal arrangement on The Foxgloves' "G.U.", which I'm about to muck up for the umpteenth time. I mention this purely for the benefit of Mr Moore.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Carpenters' "Won't Last a Day Without You".

Honda, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've just been listening to some très bizarre MIDI versions of "It's Only A Paper Moon", while trying to find the James Darren version on the interweb.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hear Satan is very cuddly.

Sarah, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Certainly the devil in our cellar is.

Tom, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The phrase "cuddly Satan" shouldn't make me think of Ned, should it?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mercedes Peon - Isue. A Galician singer who's filling in the gaps between Ofra Haza, Kate Bush and Dolores O'Cranberry. The jury is still out but I'm sticking with it for the time being.

Billy Dods, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm listening to some new LTJ Bukem thing I've to review for some website, and some compilation of Dutch Dance music which seems quite good.

Ronan, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Until I left for work: a mix involving the Langley Schools Music Project doing Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft and samples from Dune. The boyfriend's way of fucking my head up I think.

Now: a case of sick building syndrome waiting to happen.

Archel, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Never Be The Same Again by Melanie Chisholm IN MY HEAD. Otherwise v.noisy air conditioning and some twats talking bollocks.

You are *such* a tease, FGGround0. You know how much I want to hear this. Never has a cake taken such an extended baking.

David, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The phrase "cuddly Satan" shouldn't make me think of Ned, should it?

Yes, yes it should. *smiles a little too broadly, gently caresses pointed nail*

As it is, now I'm listening to the Monks. Very Satanic.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Phil Stumpf - "Du Kannst Nicht Tanzen"

As in "Du.... kannst nicht tanzen. Du... kannst nicht tanzen" etc.

Chemical Brothers and some Lee Perry. "Clip clop cloppiddy cloppidy cloppidy cloppidy hiii!". This Redman CD wont work on my stereo or PC, so I tried it on a friends stereo and it worked. I've only listened to it once. Fuckin' CD's.

debaser, off a copy of death to the pixies i just robbed off my sister...i had vaguely heard a reference to this before, but i just copped on now that the song is clearly based on that louis bunel film un chien andalou (sp?),which scarred me for life during a visit to the museum of moving image in london when i was around 13...ever since i saw it i have a fear of anyone going near,or talking about going near,my (or anyone else's)eyes...fuck,every time i hear debaser now i won't be able to stop thinking about it...dunno how i didn't notice before....

robin, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello Tim Finney, no doubt you are referring to some of this modern dance music but WOT A GREBT TITLE: whats it like?

Sarah, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing at present, but today I have listened to Caetano Veloso, Aden, Aztec Camera, and out of childlike enthusiasm for this fun game I have just bunged on some Cat’s Miaow! which is, natch, bangin’.

Mark C, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Whiskey Vengeance" by Bloodrock. It reminds me of Arthur Brown, if he was stupid. I've been on this kick of only listening to dumb macho he-man women-hating songs from the early 70s, the ones with aggressive horns and horrific keyboards. Help me, Lucretia McEvil owns my soul.

Arthur, Tuesday, 14 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What d'yer think of it, Dan? Now listening to Monster Magnet covering Hawkwind, which makes perfect sense.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hammerfall, "heeding the call". because i'm doing this thing called "reading the aeneid for my ap exam on friday," although i'm not REALLY doing it, and it seems to match.

Maria, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lil Louis - French Kiss. Why I have no idea. Masters at Work and Lil Louis produce some of the worst music ever. This however is my personal opinion. If you don't share my opinion, you obviously have some mental defect or you're deaf. (For those taking my comment seriously, you have a mental defect. Joke alert.)
Scritti Politti's cupid & psyche 85 > I ab-so-lu-te-ly love that record. Jess, didn't you move house recently? Is this one of the records you dragged with you? If so, wise choice.

cuba libre (nathalie), Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hello Tim Finney, no doubt you are referring to some of this modern dance music but WOT A GREBT TITLE: whats it like?"

Well, there's this beat. And then there's big bassline. And then there's guy whispering "du.... kannst nicht tanzen" somewhat sexily over and over again. It's utterly brilliant.

Tim, Wednesday, 15 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger

The Fall don't like it in cities either. The Fall do not like being anywhere.

I am listening to the sound of my officemate typing, listening verrrry carefully for clues that he might be about to turn round and see me wasting time on ILE. Typing this and pondering my own evilness has started 22pistepirkko's "Don't Say I'm So Evil" playing in my head.

Chris, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham: they do too! I've seen them live and they did a session for Mark Radcliffe's graveyardshift shows and everything. I could enthuse about far more obscure Finnish bands than that if you wanted. :) Er, except most of the others I like either do instrumentals or sing in Finnish, so I don't ponder their lyrics quite so often.

The Desaparecidos album rocks. I take back my nastiness about Conor Oberst and instead I swoon in his general direction.

...oh, don't say, don't say, don't say i'm so evil, if i just want to marry you...

"Northern Girl" by Prime Minister, the Russian Eurovision contestants. They're billed as Russia's answer to Take That and Boyzone, except they're probably the most hideous-looking boy band ever. It looks like they've got Horation Sanz and a tubby Andrew WK in the band. They really shouldn't be wearing those clingy white sweaters. The songs cute, though. I have to keep listening to it cause it sounds like they're singing "Northern Girl/Frosty Eyes/How can I mount you?"

New Sasha album, and it isn't really all that. It's pleasant, but not earth shaking.

"Leave The Biker" by Fountains of Wayne. Nerds rule, popular people suck, this song proves it.

RickyT, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Vitalic, Le Rock and the cocaine song. rave on man, and if you will, feel the vibe (it is not rave music tho)

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well adam and the ants may well rock but that bit in Apollo 9 where it goes "fi-fi-fi-fi-FIVE! Urrgh!" and someone makes that "hoourgh" noise that was so TUFF back in the '80s is probably the most cringingly awful thing ever to have a big load of reverb on it (apart from Morten Harket doing the same thing in A=Ha's "the living daylights" probably) hahaha i am an effects snob!

katie, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

katie, do not speak ill of a-ha or you will be severely punished, by me e-mailing you lots of strange kitten-themed jpegs.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

alang, a) that is a rubbish punishment and b) i WUVVVV++++ A-ha, i just think that those "hooargh!" noises that people make in songs are a bit crap that's all. well they are!

Currently listening to this weird little comp that's a semi-parody of the Darla comp series. Good music, though.

Something by Lasgo. I love this song.

toraneko, Friday, 31 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have A-Ha's most recent album and I like it. They are old now and Mags is better looking than Morten Harkett. I never would have believed it could happen.

Mitch said Green Velvet - "Answering Machine" (X-Press 2 remix) "I! DON'T! NEED! THIS! SHIT!" (thanks to Ronan for turning me on to this)

Doesn't everyone who hears this song feel compelled to scream I! DON'T! NEED! THIS! SHIT! Is there a better thing to scream when you want to unwind? Possibly not.

Also I didn't see Alang's post before but Vitalic-La Rock is godlike genius.

Right now I'm listening to the Byrds-I am a pilgrim. It's a bit depressing.

Ronan, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, yes. Green Velvet rocks my world.

Right now I'm listening to the Detroit Grand Pubahs. I am not sure about it.

RickyT, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seckou Keita playing just for me outside my window cos I said they were ace at Glastonbury (which they were).

They just finished. They were lovely.

Is there a vitalic collection anywhere? like a CD or some such strange device. i only have mp3s and bits off all the great compilations of late (you know the drill)

Alan T, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I only know of those two songs, but La Rock is the amazing for the same reasons I said Silver Screen Shower Scene was great here

Ronan, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, Ronan, can I use that link too?

RickyT, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes!

haha I have found the ultimate interchangeable sentence for all techno. Did someone say Muzik needed a new editor? First issue front page"THE HUMAN BODY DOES NOT HAVE THE CAPABILITIES REQUIRED FOR VITALIC'S NEW SINGLE!"

Later in my career I will use it for political comment.

Ronan, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i bought the detroit grand pubahs too, but i haven't played it yet. i am all about damon wild, red planet and hardfloor at the moment (why hasn't ronan downloaded hardtrance acperience yet?????)

gareth, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oooh is it on filepile?

RickyT, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah cos my computer is crap and keeps freezing. what's the artist name etc, and I'll get my brother to download it and copy it onto a cd etc.

Ronan, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Last thing I listened to was "Soldier" by Eminem on Vib Ribbon but it was too hard for me so I 'died' halfway through.

Sarah, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

artist name is hardfloor. besides hardtrance asperience, go for 'into the nature', 'lost in the silver box', 'trancescript'

gareth, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Bah cos my computer is crap and keeps freezing."

Eek. Tell me about it. Everytime I try and play an mp3, it freezes on me. I just upgraded this PC to Windows XP. Kinda like putting a V8 engine into a Reliant Robin. So I've just been listening to Happy Mondays "Bummed" on the stereo all day.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

its not on filepile as far as i am aware, but when i get back from berlin i'll be doing another cdr giveaway and one of the cdrs will probably have a couple hardfloor tracks on

gareth, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cool I'll look into it, the other problem with my comp is the biscuit tin like speakers. Still if my brother does as he's told I'll have Josh Wink/Dave Clarke live from Turnmills that I downloaded when I was over on CD, oh boy will that be a happy day.

Ronan, Thursday, 25 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Currently at the reserves front desk and listening to the mesmerizing hum of the high-powered AC and lighting system. A little more echo and Lull would be all over it.

Loose Rap by Aaliyah. But I heard the SWEETEST song recently: Angie Stone's Why I didn't miss you. I heard it in a pub. Then, becaus eI didn't know WHO sang it, asked on ILM. My friend, after reading the thread, phoned me to tell me. Yesterday I heard it at the Ten Days Off but in a FANTASTIC REMIX VERSION! Today, without realizing my friend phoned me up to let me hear that remix. hah! Gah, I want that remix on VINYL or a SHINY DISC. Or MP3. heh

and in the time it took me to cut and paster that it changed to Boards of Canada, er, Wildlife Analysis. (btw, star, i didn't enjoy the new BOC album, mostly, but the Bola cd that came out at the same time ('fyuti') was everything i wanted the new BOC album to be)

argh, changed again. afx237 v7 by aphex twin. the random feature isn't very good on music match, i get the same tracks over and over again.
