supremacy

WATERSLIDE MANSION (ice cr?m), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:12 (sixteen years ago)

yikes hard... gotta be supremacy or ultimatum... tempted by ultimatum since joan allen is in it more... plus code ten abort...

max, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:13 (sixteen years ago)

i think ultimatum for its awesome major set pieces, train station with paddy considine and morocco parkour jamout

s1ocki, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:14 (sixteen years ago)

I've never seen any of the Bournes, I just came here to lol at A-Rod

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:15 (sixteen years ago)

train station scene was some srsly virtuoso shit def

ice cr?m, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:15 (sixteen years ago)

morbs i think you might lik eem

s1ocki, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:15 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno i kinda <3 id bc of franka potente and og badassness.

gangsa paradise (tehresa), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

HEY MORBS DO YOU LIKE THE BOURNE MOVIES ?

ice cr?m, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

a-rod was the love interest in bourne 2 fyi

John Hyman (misspelled intentionally) (omar little), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

you're mixing him up with shrill-rod

s1ocki, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

The lack of Potente puts Part I ahead of Parts II and III for me. Plus Chris Cooper is really good in the first film (and Finney appears to be playing Brian Cox in Part III.) Also Clive Owen!

Alex in SF, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

i think jeter in the karl urban role would have been vv satisfying

John Hyman (misspelled intentionally) (omar little), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:21 (sixteen years ago)

ya, potente and clive and chris do make a strong case for 1

s1ocki, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

The second film, despite Joan Allen.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

i'm voting for 2 because of joan allen and brian cox, + the russia stuff

John Hyman (misspelled intentionally) (omar little), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)

this is really really tough. i love these movies so much for different reasons.

Disco/Very (Roz), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:26 (sixteen years ago)

supremacy -- just.

probably quote strathairn in ultimatum more.

exactly

nobody really hates hen fap (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

i'm upset that there is no ballot for "i've only watched these on TV half-paying attention and don't really know the different between them." i think the first one has the least amount of Julia Stiles, though, so i'll vote for that.

some dude, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

2nd one has least julia stiles

max, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

who would hate julia stiles that much

s1ocki, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

I think some dude is right. Her part in #2 is more significant even if she is on the screen less.

Alex in SF, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

she looks the best in ultimatum btw

max, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

When she gets all Goth'd out def.

Alex in SF, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

surely this thread will lure tombot back in?

if bourne was smart he would have used facebook + theater kids and spirited paddy on outta there

John Hyman (misspelled intentionally) (omar little), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

identity was good. very above average for what i was expecting. and ultimatum was great, but the shock of the jump in quality from identity to supremacy means that one sticks out more for me. supremacy, for making car chases exciting again.

Gukbe, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

the third one, for the reasons slocki outlined, is so awesome. the first one has some great shit, too though: the opening scene where he escapes from the bank, the whole hunting down clive owen scene, the scene where the dude busts through his apt window. it should finish in second here imo.

nascar jesus (J0rdan S.), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

The fact that I can't remember what happened in the third one after he gets to NY hurts it.

Alex in SF, Monday, 9 February 2009 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

there's a fourth film in the works although i really wish they'd leave it as is cause right now this is pretty much as perfect as a trilogy can get.

gonna go with identity, for clive owen, franka potente, fight scene in the apartment and my genuine surprise at the time at matt damon's acting + hotness.

Disco/Very (Roz), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:54 (sixteen years ago)

TS: Joan Allen vs Julia Stiles.

I don't mind Stiles, especially for her perfect underacting in one key moment in Ultimatum, but, sorry, Allen's just a frowning bore. She doesn't think of new ways to unclench her jaw.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:59 (sixteen years ago)

need to think about this but my gut reaction is supremacy

it amuses and intrigues throughout (Lamp), Monday, 9 February 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

Tempted to go for Supremacy because of the insane scene where for a second you really thought Bourne was going to kill Julia Styles' character.

yeah this is part of what i meant by the 'less stiles' preference

some dude, Monday, 9 February 2009 19:12 (sixteen years ago)

the potente kill was a great surprise

s1ocki, Monday, 9 February 2009 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

not for her obv

s1ocki, Monday, 9 February 2009 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

the potent kill would be a great name for the next bond movie

John Hyman (misspelled intentionally) (omar little), Monday, 9 February 2009 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

the potente kill was a great surprise

― s1ocki, Monday, February 9, 2009 1:15 PM (1 minute ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

i was so mad all the way through supremacy bc of this. also some horrible people had brought their three year old son and he was clearly traumatized by it. more the loss of potente, though.

horseshoe, Monday, 9 February 2009 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

who would bring a three year old to bourne

s1ocki, Monday, 9 February 2009 19:19 (sixteen years ago)

blackbriar early training methods

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

ultimatum if only for the train station mentioned, he's the most bourne there he will ever be and I agree that making a fourth movie now seems kinda risky (not box office speaking obviously)

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

you mean matt damon might get injured?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

i feel like i'm in crazy land do you people not remember all the interminable gauzy faux-manchurian candidate flashback shit in ultimatum!!? "who am i" works a lot better when the answer still could really be anything, rather than the answer being like, a soldier dude who once had to kill a guy in the middle of an erasure video

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:14 (sixteen years ago)

yeah all that stuff took up 2 minutes of screentime

John Hyman (misspelled intentionally) (omar little), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

ya i didnt like that but like i said, i dont really care about that movie outside the major set pieces so it didnt bother me

s1ocki, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)

this is the only series i can think of where i think it got better with each movie.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

Bourne: just consider the fact that you might be dead before your next shit

joan allen: well i'm shitting right now as a matter of fact

bourne: well i call bullshit, if you will, because i;m on your toilet and you're not on my lap

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:22 (sixteen years ago)

Identity by a long chalk - the momentum from complete anonymity to painful revelation, while having no time to think or settle was pretty good. Each subsequent one worse. Ultimatum, Waterloo bit aside, was pretty dire.

The momentum of the first had changed into headache/fight/run/headache/fight/run/headache/jump in water in several meaninglessly different locations. Those shaky camera fight scenes and car chases don't really do it for me either.

Abbe Black Tentacle (GamalielRatsey), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:27 (sixteen years ago)

the of course hes still alive reveal at the end of ultimatum w/incognito stiles smiling in the cafe and the music kicking in was super obv and great

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

to me all of these movies reduce to the moment when he smacks a book into a dude's throat. pretty sure i blurted out "fuckin book!" in the theater. that's ultimatum, right?

goole, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

i like it when he whacks a guy half to death with a magazine

s1ocki, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

I fucked up

I bought my brother and sister-in-law these movies for Christmas when clearly I should have kept them

woe

nosotros niggamos (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

whatevs tnt/usa is constantly showing them anyway (when they're not showing law & order i mean)

mookieproof, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

it really doesn't seem to me like the plot point of (spoiler) stiles being in love with him before he went into the program was dreamed up until the third movie; a rare case of a big revision like that not being a disaster. it does kinda add another layer to her scenes in the earlier movies.

s1ocki, Friday, 20 February 2009 00:05 (sixteen years ago)

Same pattern as you get with a lot of trilogies, innit? You either get first movie winning, as the others are diluted (see Matrix), or else second movie wins, as narrative is generally more fully-formed, plot and tone darker, and characters more established - see Star Wars, X-Men, Spider-Man, etc.

What world is Beyond Thunderdome > Mad Max?

I think you're seeing the "more people have seen it" effect in play there.

(Also, I've only seen it once, but from what I remember "Mad Max" wasn't that effective a movie until the last 10 minutes, when it suddenly went awesome; "Beyond Thunderdome" is distilled silliness but is pretty entertaining throughout.)

die hards 2 and 3 rated way too highly there.

s1ocki, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

its actually "die hard with a vengeance"

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

because of its vengeance theme, right

s1ocki, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:52 (sixteen years ago)

thanks for spotting that

s1ocki, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:52 (sixteen years ago)

— with a vengeance
1: with great force or vehemence <undertook reform with a vengeance>
2: to an extreme or excessive degree <the tourists are back—with a vengeance>

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:53 (sixteen years ago)

die hard
1. To take a long time in passing out of existence: racial prejudices that die hard.
2. To resist against overwhelming, hopeless odds: radicalism that dies hard.

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

i would guess that the title means: To resist against overwhelming, hopeless odds to an extreme or excessive degree

max, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

JP: o.g. rated way too low imo

Questionable plot devices that always bothered me about the 2nd film:

How did Eomer/the Russians get access to Bourne's fingerprint--and remember how insistent he was at wiping everything (cars/hotel rooms) down in the first film--... a fingerprint that the Director of the CIA (!!!) can't even access to identify.
