Or: The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button's 13 nominations

I've just looked at the odds for the first time (at Easy odds. Didn't realise Slumdog and Boyle were quite such a runaway favourites now for film and director.

Taking the Ladbrokes odds for the sake of illustration, here are the six big categories:

BEST FILM:
Slumdog Millionaire 1/8
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button 5/1
Milk 20/1
Frost/Nixon 33/1
The Reader 33/1

BEST DIRECTOR
Danny Boyle 1/7
David Fincher 5/1
Gus Van Sant 25/1
Ron Howard 25/1
Stephen Daldry 33/1

BEST LEADING ACTRESS
Kate Winslet 4/9
Meryl Streep 10/3
Anne Hathaway 4/1
Angelina Jolie 20/1
Melissa Leo 33/1

BEST LEADING ACTOR
Mickey Rourke 1/2
Sean Penn 15/8
Frank Langella 9/1
Brad Pitt 33/1
Richard Jenkins 50/1

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Penelope Cruz 1/2
Viola Davis 7/2
Marisa Tomei 11/2
Amy Adams 14/1
Taraji P Henson 16/1

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:

Heath Ledger 1/50
Philip Seymour Hoffman 20/1
Robert Downey Jr 20/1
Josh Brolin 25/1
Michael Shannon 40/1

Interestingly (or boringly, perhaps) all the favourites are the Bafta winners.

Alba, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

2009 81st Academy Awards

but I guess this thread can be for people who didn't know on New Years Day that Slumdog was the winner.

"boringly" is most def the operative word this year.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

This is the first time in my moviegoing life that I have not seen a single Best Picture nominee. And have little interest in any of them, either, except maybe "Milk."

I'm white, btw.

Pancakes Hackman, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

Thought I had seen a thread before but assumed it would have Oscars in the title.

Alba, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:34 (seventeen years ago)

Milk's terrific, Pancakes. You can easily skip all the others.

Only two films involved in these six that I've not seen - The Visitor and Frozen River. Will try to make amends before Sunday, but I doubt I'll manage both.

Alba, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:

Heath Ledger 1/50

So, a pound will get you tuppence...

Mark G, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

the odds against Streep & Penn are overstated, imo

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:42 (seventeen years ago)

My money's on Rourke, though.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

yes, all "top 8" categories look like a snooze.

Fuck the Oscars. It really can't be said enough. I will destroy them, right after the 2 major political parties and the Grammys.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

I wonder if the crowd will boo if Heath Ledger doesn't win.

Alba, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

morbz, please destroy the oscars before the grammys, nobody thinks the grammys actually mean anything

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

It's a fun guessing game! And there are dresses! I don't see how a serious appreciation of film is incompatible with enjoying the Oscars.

Oscars = lots more fun than the Grammys.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

might not want to start listing things that are more fun than the grammys

Nielsen’s list of the most-watched Oscar broadcasts since 1974:

RANK DATE NETWORK BEST FILM # OF VIEWERS P2+(MILLIONS)
1 3/23/1998 ABC Titanic 55.2
2 4/11/1983 ABC Gandhi 53.2
3 4/14/1980 ABC Kramer vs. Kramer 49.0
4 4/3/1978 ABC Annie Hall 48.5
5 3/27/1995 ABC Forrest Gump 48.3
6 4/8/1975 NBC GodfatherPart II 48.1
7 3/29/1976 ABC One… Cuckoo’s Nest 46.8
8 3/26/2000 ABC American Beauty 46.3
9 4/9/1979 ABC Deer Hunter 46.3
10 3/29/1982 ABC Chariots of Fire 46.2

LOL at the two top-rated broadcasts being 15 years apart. Double LOL at the most recent being 2000. Don't worry, Bill Condon and Larry Mark, I'm sure you'll nail it.

Pancakes Hackman, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

people do not watch TV in those numbers anymore (except to see teenagers hitting an iceberg win prizes)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

This year's Super Bowl got 94 million viewers. "American Idol" regularly gets 25 million viewers, which is a little less than half the top-rated-ever Oscars broadcast, for a show in its 8th season.

Pancakes Hackman, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

Slumdog Millionaire and The Reader will probably win everything, and I'll have no opinion whatsoever since I've seen neither of them.

If I tune it, you can believe it's because of the fact that Hugh Jackman is exceptionally easy on the eyes and might just do/say/perform something entertaining. That top-of-the-piano leopard-skin number from "The Boy from Oz" would make many things bearable.

Hey Jude, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

the Super Bowl is not comparable to anything else (mostly bcuz ppl just have it on while they are humping or eating nachos). xp

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

The Gandhi year was second?!

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

bcuz everyone expected E.T. to win.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

I figured, but still....

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

wait what

and what, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:18 (seventeen years ago)

now officially the stupid Oscars thread.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

i didnt really read any posts to the thread i just left on my screen while i was humping and eating nachos

and what, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

OK, since it's the stupid Oscars thread, how about a fun/snobby game ... Worst nominee of the '00s in each of the major categories. My picks (skipped a lot, obv):

Picture: Crash
Director: Stephen Daldry (more of a cumulative outrage, though The Reader clinched it)
Actor: Sean Penn, I Am Sam
Actress: Halle Berry, Monster's Ball
Supporting Actor: William Hurt, A History of Violence
Supporting Actress: Catherine Keener, Capote
Original Screenplay: Crash really, but for the sake of not repeating, Amélie
Adapted Screenplay: Little Children

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

Wm Hurt was funny, whereas the rest of the film wasn't much of anything.

hard to argue against Crash or Amelie. I will see my first Daldry film when he makes one and isn't nominated.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

Picture: Crash
Director: Paul Haggis
Actor: Sean Penn (Sam)
Actress: Naomi Watts (21 Grams)
Supporting Actor: Matt Dillon - Crash
Supporting Actress: Queen Latifah - Chicago
Original Screenplay: Crash. Second: Gladiator
Adapted Screenplay: Seabiscuit

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

William Hurt will destroy you, brohim.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

Fuck the Oscars. It really can't be said enough. I will destroy them, right after the 2 major political parties and the Grammys.

Morbs, could you please keep this kind of stuff on the ILF Oscar thread? Seems like a vulgar, searchable thread with "Oscar" in the title and a serious one on ILF is actually a pretty good idea, even if it happened by mistake.

caek, Thursday, 19 February 2009 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

I didn't realise the one linked to was an I Love Film thread. ILE definitely warrants its own Oscars thread.

Alba, Thursday, 19 February 2009 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

the Oscars are plenty political, of the lip-service Clintonite millionaire stripe.

the one on ILF isn't serious either. it's an Oscars thread.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 19 February 2009 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

But it's on ILF!

Alba, Thursday, 19 February 2009 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

Mr. Que, Thursday, 19 February 2009 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

You WISH Newman fucked Vidal.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 February 2009 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

fed him nachos maybe

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 February 2009 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

my understanding is Paul Joanne & Gore made for quite a cohabitating threesome in the '50s.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 19 February 2009 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

What should I put for best Doc Short in my Oscar pool? Anyone seen any of them?

caek, Friday, 20 February 2009 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

my understanding is Paul Joanne & Gore made for quite a cohabitating threesome in the '50s.

Vee-dal's memoir contains an amusing chapter, and a photo of a drunken pseudo-marriage, but I don't think Newman got the Kerouac treatment.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 20 February 2009 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

xp: Ican't say, one of my pool competitors will see this.

real answer: Nobody knows.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 20 February 2009 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Friday, 20 February 2009 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

i was thinking about the cases that exist for at least 3 of the Doc Shorts this year tho.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

why is it always humping OR nachos

Tracer Hand, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

Dr Morbius, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

Jackman told an interviewer that he was hosting naked, with a strategic leaf. And that all the acceptance speeches will be sung, with interpretive dancers in the background.

Y'know, I'd watch that Oscars. LOL

Tracer Hand, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

Or maybe do it Pop-Up Video style, but snarky.

Hey Jude, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

Probably late now, but we should do an ILX pool next year

caek, Friday, 20 February 2009 18:45 (seventeen years ago)

I'm already in three pools this year.

The office pool is the lowest stakes but the most participants: there are 24 of us guessing at 14 categories. Based on my first glance at the spreadsheet, it looks like it will come down to actor, supporting actress, adapted screenplay, cinematography, and original song.

1988 (61st) Tin Toy - Pixar Productions - John Lasseter and William Reeves
1997 (70th) Geri's Game - Pixar Animation Studios - Jan Pinkava
2001 (74th) For the Birds - Pixar Animation Studios - Ralph Eggleston

Anyway, I'm going to be pretty conservative with my picks. Film: Slumdog, Dir: Danny Boyle, Actor: Mickey Rourke, Actress: Kate Winslet, Supporting Actor: Ledger, Supporting Actress: Viola Davis

Alba, Sunday, 22 February 2009 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

Viola Davis wouldn't be all that surprising, but I think Cruz is still the favorite.

Okay…clearly TIVO is not working here…
by Gary Graham
I apologize for being ten minutes behind everyone, but i TIVO’d and am trying to catch up on commercials, and boring acceptance speeches. Something tells me I’ll be caught up in about three minutes. But talk about an ADD nightmare. How do you all 1) Watch the show, 2) Post your own blogments, and 3) comment on everyone else’s blogments? Multi-tasking on steroids. But seriously…Jackman is great as a host, but…couldn’t he at least put on an American accent for this? This is the American Oscars, after all. Oh, yeah…I forgot about David Niven way back when.

Yeah! Go back to your own country Jackman!

Tuomas, Monday, 23 February 2009 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, on second thought, I don't know how I'd feel about Stallone actually trying to be funny. It might just be upsetting, & probably wouldn't hold a candle to timeless classics like Over The Top & Cobra.

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Monday, 23 February 2009 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

You know, I loved the whole thing of having actors who have previously won give testimonies to the nominees. It felt like the elders choosing someone for the club. And I especially loved that they did this in lieu of showing soundbite clips, because then it really is the craftsmen testifying instead of some flashy moment.

Eazy, Monday, 23 February 2009 15:31 (seventeen years ago)

i thought it took too long and came off really awkwardly. just find a good, short segment of the actor and show it to us.

Kingsley & Hopkins: "GUILTY"

Dr Morbius, Monday, 23 February 2009 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

Since the Oscars fundamentally are not a People magazine poll but movie craftspeople voting for their peers, this was an honest way of manifesting that. Having Christopher Walken indoctrinate Michael Shannon (who will be the next Christopher Walken) worked for me more than watching 10 seconds of acting and deciding whether it merits an award.

It's a bit Bohemian Grove, but again, these are awards nominated and voted for by fellow craftspeople, so having it seem like a guild isn't actually inaccurate.

Eazy, Monday, 23 February 2009 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

It felt like the elders choosing someone for the club.

Yeah, I thought that part was cool, too. If they do this next year, that'll be something else to bet on. I called Hopkins before he walked out on stage.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Monday, 23 February 2009 15:40 (seventeen years ago)

I don't mind the idea, but the staging was VERY creepy. My friend last night said it looked like the Star Chamber.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 February 2009 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

In a better world, the assembled actresses would have stood in a circle around Winslet and scolded her for starring in such a shitty film.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 February 2009 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

Well, that's just bitchy. What's a better scenario for doing it this same way? To me, it sure beat having pairs of actors presenting those awards.

Eazy, Monday, 23 February 2009 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

sunnny called them bridesmaid's toasts, and it did remind me of that unwatchable scene in rachel getting married. surely they've already run out of actors capable of doing it with a straight face.

caek, Monday, 23 February 2009 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

To me, it sure beat having pairs of actors presenting those awards.

Does anyone know if the actors wrote their own scripts and got to choose a nominee? It might work if they were less starry-eyed.

The Screaming Lobster of Challops (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 23 February 2009 15:44 (seventeen years ago)

that unwatchable scene in rachel getting married

rong

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Monday, 23 February 2009 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

yes, Walken to Shannon = passing of typecast-psycho torch

our party MC did hilarious Sarah Jessica falsetto over her entire script.

Sophia Loren w/ hand on hip looked like overdressed Roma madam about to go into a tantrum.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 23 February 2009 15:45 (seventeen years ago)

Again, it really is a guild. They made it look like reality TV, sure, but it's truer to the nature of the award than having pairs of actors as presenters.

I'm guessing we'll learn more soon, but I would think that the actors at least were able to choose who they were endorsing.

It'll be interesting to see whether not showing clips gets more people to actually see the films instead of feeling now like they're seen them, the way I certainly would if I had watched extensive clips from Slumdog Millionaire and The Reader.

Eazy, Monday, 23 February 2009 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

(On a totally different note, lots of folks missing: Nicholson, Clooney, Hanks, etc.)

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/tv-reviews/tv-review-the-81st-annual-academy-awards-1003943895.story

The newfangled touches were in the main a towering success because they put the Oscarcast's focus back where it should be: on the nominees and winners rather than some thematic salute to yesteryear. The gambit of having former winners pay homage to the acting nominees with singularly focused tributes to the performers and their roles was so warm and engaging it should be made part of every Academy Awards going forward. The incorporating of classic clips into the best picture intro likewise proved impactful for its sheer simplicity.

flyover vs. fly to. like, plenty of people fly to chicago.

1. fly-over state

States in the middle of the United States that generally aren't destinations for travelers or tourists and are generally flown over when traveling from coast to coast. Some fly-over states include Nebraska, Oklahoma, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, New Mexico, Iowa, and Arkansas.

Or, rather, this nominee from that list on In Contention is better than whatever will materialize in 11 months.

Mo'Nique, "Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire"

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

Eric is my favorite Oscar blogger, among other reasons because he only does it for 3 weeks.

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:11 (seventeen years ago)

Nat R.'s obviously my favorite real Oscar blogger because he really does take most of the year (comparatively) off.

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:12 (seventeen years ago)

shutter island is one of the worst books i have ever read and has a really really retarded shyamalanesque twist ending, going to be interesting to see how scorcese deals with this

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

MOTION PICTURE

“Amelia”
“Nine”
“Shutter Island”
“Taking Woodstock”
“Untitled Nelson Mandela Project”

That something In Contention is right now called an "Untitled" "Project" means next year's competition will be WIDE OPEN!! zomg?!

Untitled Nelson Madea Project

2nd-place ladyboy (Nicole), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

imo this was the best Oscars i've ever watched, but then it was also the first one i ever watched w/ a funny film buff friend and it helped that neither of us had any investment in most of the nominated films and could just yuk it up

pour some suggban on me (some dude), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

i guess you could say that watching it with that dude made a special oscar night for you, eh?

Untitled Nelson/Madea Project

it's darn and ielle is hot (and what), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

casting Sophia Loren in a musical remake of 8-1/2 seems like a surefire way to render the rest of the cast inauthentic, but whadda I know.

actually Eric, Clint & Warners are probably just arguing over whether they want the audience to know it's partly about Mandela or that it stars MATT DAMON.

shutter island is one of the worst books i have ever read and has a really really retarded shyamalanesque twist ending

what you mean is it can't be any worse than Cape Fear

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

except cape fear was actually based off of good source material?

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

actually aside from Mitchum, the original's shit too.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

we disagree about the quality of the original cape fear but trust me, if you read "shutter island," you would agree that it's worse

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

I may very well skip yet another Marty-Leo movie; I'm much more intrigued by the following MS project:

The Mission meets Gilbert Grape?

no, Leo's not in this one (let's pray).

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

caek, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 12:57 (seventeen years ago)

actually aside from Mitchum, the original's shit too.

but Mitchum's what's it about! he's so gross in that movie. :)

Ludo, Wednesday, 25 February 2009 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

The only sense in which original Cape Fear pales is in comparison to The Night of the Hunter. Which is true of any film in comparison to the latter film.

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 25 February 2009 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

NotH is way better, sure

yes, caek. soccer + St. Morgan zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
