I prefer 21st. I'm sleepy and worktired by Friday nights, but I'm old. I'm ok with either actually.

given the concentration of quality peeps in the SEAWA/PRTLND area, i would love to, but am business owner type in "new economy" so probably pretty chained to home for march/forever.

eventually though. K is a proud lewis and clark grad, so i will be pacific northwesting some time in the near future, full guarantee.

kingfish, Thursday, 26 February 2009 05:43 (seventeen years ago)

not 100% on portland days yet!

let's talk about seattle. i am bored at work.

yur twit (tehresa), Monday, 2 March 2009 21:53 (seventeen years ago)

anyone?
fun facts?
i need to study.

yur twit (tehresa), Monday, 2 March 2009 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

I wish I was bored at work today.

You need to take a ferry to either Bremerton or Bainbridge Island. There's more to do on the Bainbridge Island side, but the trip to Bremerton is longer and prettier. Also, Bremerton->Seattle at dawn is awesome, especially if it's near full moon, and the clouds break.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 02:52 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yeah, this is from downtown Seattle (forgot to mention that.) Alaskan Wy and Columbia St. For passengers or bikers, I think you only pay one way, and it was around $7(?) last time I went. Always totally worth it, even if it's grey.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

And these are the state ferries i.e. actual public transit. These aren't tourist boats, technically, although they happen to work as such very well! The WA State Ferry system is so underrated, even when things suck.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 02:56 (seventeen years ago)

This is the part of the thread where gabbneb would offer about 7 different itineries and you'd have to take made notes and probably need mad cash. To be honest, I kinda miss gabb's waxing Washington State. :-/

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 02:57 (seventeen years ago)

i stayed on bainbridge last time i went to seattle (10+ years ago). best view of the city! so awesome. i would like to go for a ferry ride even though i have already done this just because it would be neat.

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 02:59 (seventeen years ago)

gabb actually sent me some great suggestions!

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 02:59 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, whenever I go to NYC, i ALWAYS GO TO SPUMONI GARDENS. I never miss doing it, even if I sacrifice doing something new. Sometimes, you gotta.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 03:00 (seventeen years ago)

btw i might have said this already but fap on the 21st

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 03:01 (seventeen years ago)

what should we do?

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 03:01 (seventeen years ago)

go make fun of anton newcombe in capitol hill

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 03:02 (seventeen years ago)

depends where you want to eat. There's always a place to get booze in any Seattle neighborhood pretty much, so it depends on where dinner is. the higgs is particular about beer places though. i don't drink, so I just want good grub.

Tamarind Tree is a favorite spot... it's a trendy Vietnamese place, and they pretty much can make anyone happy, vegan or fleshie. That place is awesome.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 03:05 (seventeen years ago)

vietnamese is fun! i don't have it enough.
i aim for epic fap so whatever that entails, bring it!

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 03:27 (seventeen years ago)

Do you need more seattle suggestions? I can provide a handful or two in an emergency.

Olympic Sculpture park = awesome. free. well worth doing. the park that runs north from it along the water is wonderful if i still was out there i'd loan you my dog to do that walk... we used to LOVE hiking all the way up the bike trail towards magnolia.

hmm... if you like photography, kerry park on Queen Anne and Volunteer Park on Capitol hill are awesome for taking photos of the city.

lyra, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

aw i would love to walk your dog through a park! maybe i will go anyway and pretend i have a dog. i like dogs. also want to go to kubota gardens.

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

Is Archie McPhee still around?

kingfish, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

Looks like

http://www.mcphee.com/

although the rumor is they're moving to 45th and Stone Way in Wallingford from their old Ballard location.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

Kubota is great also, although I stupidly never went until I'd moved to the east coast & was back visiting once.

this is my dog, my best friend, and his dog, in myrtle edwards- which is the park with the dog path that runs north from the olympic sculpture park:

Are you taking the train between seattle & portland? it's a really nice ride- if you buy tickets more than 2 weeks out, it's also usually really cheap.

lyra, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

I have more coupons for Buy One Amtrak Cascades Ride, Get One Free than I can use this year, so if you need one, let me know. Hopefully I can just send over the coupon ID in some form, and you could book online. Amtrak Cascades isnt the fastest way between Portland and Seattle, but it's the swankiest. If you have a laptop or gadget that needs ane electrical outlet, each seating area contains one outlet per seating area.

Just make sure from Portland and Seattle you DO NOT TAKE THE COASTAL STARLIGHT TRAIN! This is the train that runs from L.A. to Seattle. By the time it reaches Portland, it's usually 6-7 hours late on the average. (Seattle to Portland on the Coastal Starlight is fine though, as the train starts in Seattle, so it will be far more on time.)

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

What he said there. Also, the dude giving the safety lecture on video at the start of the Cascades ride is Mr. Smooth.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 17:38 (seventeen years ago)

excellent tips. woah i should really get planning on the portland end! i am just over 2 weeks out now!

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

also lyra your dog is <3 <3 <3

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

Wah. Last time (a month or two ago) I tried to take the Coastal Starlight from Seattle, they canceled the train and I didn't get to Olympia until 3 hours after I was supposed to, in which time I had important stuff I was supposed to be doing.

The Reverend (rev), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

When you get to portland, we'll take you to the Alibi for proper neon tiki drunkening

kingfish, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 18:38 (seventeen years ago)

i don't know what that means but wow

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

man, i'm jealous. i seriously need to get out there again soon.

Seattle good food: the macaroons and croissants at le panier in pike place market, COFFEE (oh god, i really miss cafe ladro and uptown... sigh...); salumi in pioneer square for sandwiches

pdx good food: mio gelato on NW 11th... is the place with the massive doughnuts still open?

lyra, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

i am getting so excited!

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

though i don't really eat a lot of sweets. the idea of a+ coffee is so :D :D :D :D

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

good coffee isn't cheaper than water in them north west parts, but it's more plentiful.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 3 March 2009 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

I always hit up the Crumpet Shop when I'm in town.

thunda lightning (clotpoll), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Voodoo Doughnuts is still around. They even have a full other shop on the eastside now.

kingfish, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 01:12 (seventeen years ago)

A Cafe Ladro opened in Lynnwood. Fancy coffees are cut out of my budget right now, but pending better times dope imo.

ilx has drained my soul (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 01:18 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, btw. You have to eat seafood when you are here.

ilx has drained my soul (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 01:19 (seventeen years ago)

My fave restaurant in Portland is Nicholas's. It's on Grand across the river from downtown. Best Mediterranean food I had in the U.S.

System Jr. (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 01:25 (seventeen years ago)

^ everybody loves this place. It's completely fantastic and v v cheap. I never even go because these days the wait for a table is so long!

! (Clay), Wednesday, 4 March 2009 02:18 (seventeen years ago)

Nicholas' is great

bear, bear, bear, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 02:25 (seventeen years ago)

Nicholas' is the best restaurant in town. I go there plenty, or to the Arabian Breeze, which is run by the same family and can hold more folks.

kingfish, Wednesday, 4 March 2009 02:37 (seventeen years ago)

god, now i want to go to nicholas' right now.

As for coffee, pretty much any neighborhood *adjacent* to downtown in some way has plenty of great independent cafes. The only "chain" that is as good as these places if not better is Cafe Ladro. Avoid Starbuck's, Peet's, Seattle's Best, or Tully's.

General rule of thumb:
* People should be there. If no one is there and they are open, something's up. No good cafe is empty.
* Baristas should not be in uniform. Uniformed baristas = chain = likely not as good.
* Baristas at good cafes usually aren't slothy or look like they hate life. Again, if so, it's likely a chain.

I'm normally not a chain = bad kinda guy, but this does apply when to comes to coffee here or anywhere in the PacNW pretty much.

Capitol Hill has the best places. The more annoying yelp bitching there is, the better. Victrola, Bauhaus (my favorite when I used to drink coffee), Vita, Vivace, and probably many others I'm forgetting.

Downtown is more sparse with the good coffee places, and they're usually open only during weekdays during business hours. Just hop to any other neighborhood from downtown, find the busy area, and you'll find good coffee.

Not sure about the tea places. Portland's really good with tea places, but Seattle has stepped up its game regarding tea. Anyone know of the best teahouses (outside Chinatown?)

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Sunday, 8 March 2009 03:39 (seventeen years ago)

Brunch/breakfast places:
* Coastal Kitchen on 15th Ave part of Capitol Hill. EXCELLENT
* The Dish in Fremont/Ballard. GREAT.
* Glo's in Capitol Hill. GREAT.
* Linda's Tavern is underrated for brunch and booze. Great jukebox too.
* Silence Heart Nest is good Krishna brunch grub in Fremont.. a bit overrated, but those yam rolls, mmmm. Costas Opa is better for Fremont brunch though.

Beer/bar:
* Brouwer's. three-digit selection of beers. In Fremont.
* Ballard in general is a great tavern neighborhood. Anything on Ballard Ave.
* The Canterbury on 15th Ave in Capitol Hill. Probably my favorite bar for hanging out second to Brouwer's.
* Smith. I'm not a fan, but most people here really dig Smith. also on 15th Ave. The owner is also playing a really important part in Rickey W.'s memorial on the 14th, so major props in any case.

These are top of my head. There are plenty of other great places in each category too.

Seattle's surprising lacks in grub are:
* good Mexican. (ok not that surprising, but you know, by NOW, you figure..)
* Indian.. especially south Indian. This one makes no sense to me. This is where Bellevue and Redmond pwn Seattle.
* Korean. As mentioned on another thread. You find these places outside Seattle, but rarely in the city. If so, it's literally on the border with a suburb city. (145th and Aurora for example.)
* Chinese. Our Chinatown isn't all that really. Ironically, better Vietnamese in Chinatown than Chinese.

Thai and Vietnamese? Too many places, therefore many good places. Chinatown has the goods for Vietnamese.

Best Vietnamese = Tamarind Tree in Chinatown, although many say the neighboring places are as good or better.

Best Thai = Thai Tom in the U District. Not so sure now as people have said the good chefs have been bought out by people in Thailand(!)

Best Sushi = ask Gygax. This is where Yelp will really help, actually. If you like novelty boat sushi in a fast food way, Blue C Sushi is good. But if you're even half a sushi snob, avoid Blue C.

Terius (The Reverend), Sunday, 8 March 2009 04:45 (seventeen years ago)

My favorite place in Chinatown is Hing Loon, on the corner of Maynard and Weller, between 6th and 7th a block away from King Street. It's totally nondescript (bad fluorescent light, all the visual elan of a dingy high school lunchroom), but the food is terrific and there are about a zillion handwritten specials covering the walls. Across the street is Honey Court, which is open later (till 2 or 3 a.m. as opposed to 11 p.m., when Hing Loon closes) and has better congee (though nothing else compares). Plenty of other places in the I.D. to eat, as well, obv.

I need to hit Salumi again soon, been way too long.

Matos W.K., Sunday, 8 March 2009 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

For coffeehouses I usually end up going to Bauhaus (Capitol Hill) and Mr. Spot's Chai House (Ballard). The latter has lots of hippies, if that's a turnoff.

India Bistro in Ballard (I think there's one in the U District now) is vv good, but I haven't been to many other Indian places in the city.

Turns out I think I'll be in Seattle on this weekend as well, but I'll be at the Robyn Hitchcock concert with friends on the 21st.

yur twit (tehresa), Monday, 9 March 2009 04:12 (seventeen years ago)

I live in the ass end of WA but play tourist frequently in both Seattle and Portland.

In Seattle, the Bainbridge ferry ride and view from Kerry park are both worth it, especially if it's clear out and you can see Rainier. Is Tamarind Tree better than / comparable to Greenleaf? I love the latter but haven't made it to the former yet. I've also had great meals at Lark, La Carta de Oaxaca, Quinns, Salumi, bahn mi at Saigon Deli, and decent breakfast stuff at Mae's.

I was in Portland last night and had really good Thai at a place called Lemongrass that my brother-in-law is a big fan of. He's also a big fan of Coffehouse Northwest on Burnside and 20th or so, but I'll take perhaps lesser coffee and better pastries at Ken's Bakery on 21st. Most of the Stumptowns are alright with me. For food, I liked Clyde Common, Toro Bravo, and Indish. I've got a ton of other places that I want to check out but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Both places are great for just roaming around and people watching and wishing I lived in either.

BTW if you like dogs and want some relaxing non-city-centric activity you can go to the dog park on Golden Gardens drive (or if you really want exercise go to 32nd and 85th st NW and walk down two long stairways) and walk along the trails in the woods and eventually make your way down to the beach.

thunda lightning (clotpoll), Monday, 9 March 2009 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

and if you come on the last sunday of the month, we can take you see the pug play date at Irving Park just south of my house

kingfish, Monday, 9 March 2009 06:20 (seventeen years ago)

RE: Seattle FAP, I'd probably recommend Canterbury because we can usually score a big table, beer's decent, drinks strong, food unremarkable bar stuff but cheap.
Also - Brouwer's, a Belgian beer bistro cafe thingy, is another option, but they won't reserve a table + Fremont on Saturday will be a fairly swarming; food's probably better than Canterbury, definitely more interesting.
(is this the thread where mackro calls me picky about beer?)
Smith-good beer, good food (not many veggie options) will usually reserve a group table, but will be packed and noisy on Saturday.
One of these? Other options?
What say ye?

the higgs, Monday, 9 March 2009 08:04 (seventeen years ago)

Any food is better than the Canterbury's these days.

Matos W.K., Monday, 9 March 2009 09:32 (seventeen years ago)

sadly, my beer drinking has to be somewhat limited because i've developed some sort of intolerance for it, but as long as there is wine and/or bourbon, i will go anywhere that beer drinkers want to go for best selection.

yur twit (tehresa), Monday, 9 March 2009 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

another friend recommends:
solo, smith, havana, sun liquor, the hideout.

brouwers sounds neat to me, and i am ok with showing up there or smith earlyish if it means making it easier to snag a table, but i trust locals to recommend the bar best for conducive fapping.

yur twit (tehresa), Monday, 9 March 2009 15:35 (seventeen years ago)

My cousin used to work at Pies & Pints but I think he may have moved to uh I forget. Up north somewhere.

How can there be male ladybugs? (Laurel), Monday, 9 March 2009 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

Canterbury is the best FAP hands down, but yeah. Eat anywhere else but the Canterbury first.

If you're into Asian veggie weird awesome fake meat place, Teapot is two blocks away.

Also their hours are weird and it's tiny, but Hillside Quickies is also two or three blocks away. It's a Jamaican vegan sandwich/burger place. Oily but excellent.

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 9 March 2009 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

i am much less concerned with what i eat than just hanging out with cool people in a nice environment!

yur twit (tehresa), Monday, 9 March 2009 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

In that case, I vote Canterbury. Not that the place doesn't get busy, but it's rarely as loud as the aforementioned places, especially if we get The Big Table By The Entrance.

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 9 March 2009 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

For locals and those who want to drive down, the Urban Iditarod is on saturday.

kingfish, Monday, 9 March 2009 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

Downtown is more sparse with the good coffee places, and they're usually open only during weekdays during business hours.

Downtown also holds Monorail Espresso (near 5ht & Pike) which is fantastic coffee. If you swing by with a cute dog, they have free milkbones for your dog, so I could never walk within a 3 block radius without Declan dragging me over there for his snack and my americano. ;-)

Chinatown: Seven Stars Peppers. Amazing, fantastic, soooooooooooo good.

lyra, Monday, 9 March 2009 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

so basically if i move to seattle i need to have a dog.

yur twit (tehresa), Monday, 9 March 2009 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

Nah. You do need a dog if you live on Vashon Island though. Becaus there, THE DOGS CONTROL YOU.

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 9 March 2009 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

i pretty much will take any excuse to get a dog at this point.

yur twit (tehresa), Monday, 9 March 2009 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

Seattle bars and restaurants and cafes are kinda liberal when it comes to allowing dogs inside. So if you're allergic to dogs, Seattle's not a good destination if you like going out and about. If you have or want a dog, then that's bonus. Then again, everyone has cats here too, so being allergic to one or the other will become an issue at some point.

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 9 March 2009 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

Don't know if any of this applies to pot belly pigs -- which qualify as domestic pets in this city, just as much as dogs or cats.

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 9 March 2009 22:11 (seventeen years ago)

Portland dog ownership is up to about 40% per household, and we did get voted best city for dogs in north america or somesuch.

a man was walking his 2 miniature goats at Interlaken Park in Seattle yesterday. totally cute and completely unexpected pleasure. they had collars and leashes!

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 9 March 2009 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

I used to work with a guy who raised miniature donkeys. The injoke was that they were his "clones".

Terius (The Reverend), Monday, 9 March 2009 22:21 (seventeen years ago)

Seattle bars and restaurants and cafes are kinda liberal when it comes to allowing dogs inside.

nothing pisses me off quite like this

Chinatown: Seven Stars Peppers. Amazing, fantastic, soooooooooooo good.

yes Yes YES !!

i saw the cuetest dog at a bar last weekend and it made me v <3 so i have no problem with dogs in bars.

so canterbury is easy but not necessarily great? maybe we should try for something great. i don't want to do mediocre. sayin'. smith and brouwers sound good (seems like those are more spacious? correct me if wrong). are they absolutely terrible if you can stake out a table early enough?

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 02:48 (seventeen years ago)

Canterbury has crappy food. That's its only negative. But you said you didn't care about food tho(?)

All of them are great. However Canterbury is best for a big ol FAP and isn't as loud as the other two, although I'm totally fine with any place.

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

Man now I want to be there. Well, next month.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 03:54 (seventeen years ago)

I'd vote for our local, Collins Pub, which has good food, good beer, full bar, large re-arrangeable table space at the back, and is not that crowded on the weekends (after work during the week is a different story). But, it is Pioneer Square, next door to the Smith Tower, so not that convenient for anyone but us.

Jaq, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 04:36 (seventeen years ago)

btw, has anyone been to Tamarind Tree lately? Last time I went, the wait was over an hour (for 4 people) and they have a very cumbersome reservation policy now (24 hours in advance, $50 charge per changed seat if the exact number don't show up, 2 hour maximum for dinner reservation, etc etc).

Jaq, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 04:39 (seventeen years ago)

Yuck. We might have to rethink the demitraditional post EMP lunch...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 04:45 (seventeen years ago)

Like joygoat says upthread - I've heard good things about Greenleaf (haven't tried it yet though).

hi jaq :)

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 05:01 (seventeen years ago)

so yeah tbh food is not my main concern in fapping but i would still prefer a bar that is aweseomer as opposed to emptier? i don't know. in the end i will go with whatever the majority prefers because really i am more about seeing people and having a nice time. do not want to be difficult, though! i guess i was just thinking 'hey if i am considering a move to a city i want to go somewhere good that i might go regularly' rather than someplace i would probably not want to frequent. does that make sense?

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 05:03 (seventeen years ago)

hi tza! :)

Jaq, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 05:10 (seventeen years ago)

oh totally! but I don't know what kind of awesome will match your awesomeness wavelength.. The Canterbury is awesome but in a totally different way that Smith is awesome which is a different awesome, etc. etc. Personally, if I were more or a bar person, I would hang out at the Canterbury all the time... it's more of a second-home/comfy-dive. Smith is a great place to take people out who are very "going out" type of people. It's not really "chill" there, relatively speaking. Don't get me wrong. It's a great hangout. It's more on the festive side of the scale though, during prime time. Brouwer's, IMHO, is a nice combo of both, which is why it's my favorite. But, like Jaq, Brouwer's is in my neighborhood.. far away (relatively) from 15th ave where Smith and The Canterbury are.

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 05:15 (seventeen years ago)

I guess we'll all have to compromise and got to Six Arms. ^_^

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 05:17 (seventeen years ago)

This is cracking me up, you can tell we haven't had a FAP in a while. Makes me feel a little sorry for try glasgow thread.

Mackro - have you been to Brouwer's on a Saturday? I think we could deal with a table wait, but how cacophontastic is it?

The Canterbury is great for drinks and conversation, but not for dinner. It has pretty much been a default local "living room" of sorts. It's not hip, it often has a dog or two around, and fairly safe from out of town hords on weekends.

6 Arms! You may be on to something here! Better food + 1 large table.

Also, Hi Tehresa - you must go to Ballard Sunday Farmers market (if it's not snowing).

the higgs, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 05:45 (seventeen years ago)

(governor, but.....maybe?? did I just forget about this?)

Juan (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 06:56 (seventeen years ago)

If it were a weeknight I'd suggest the Hopvine, which is where my girlfriend and I are starting to meet up w/friends when she's in town. It's smaller than the Canterbury or Smith, though--which is too bad in a way. It's kind of perfect for smaller gatherings--and they have the best soups I've had in Seattle.

The Canterbury is a very cozy, weathered, sorta beat-up bar, with three different large rooms. The drinks are stiff and the atmosphere very convivial. I used to eat here regularly. It's half a block from my house and they used to make a decent cheeseburger. At some point over a year ago they changed the menu to go "upscale"--various new hamburger toppings, basically. This bombed, and they reverted back to a simpler menu, only something happened where they couldn't have made a cheeseburger to save their lives. Every time I've gone back it's been just as bad. But for drinking and talking and putting songs on the jukebox, it's very good.

I like Smith a great deal; the food is neck-and-neck with Coastal Kitchen and a bit ahead of the Hopvine and Jamjuree as far as eateries along this strip of 15th Ave. E. The thing with Smith is that the very high ceiling and very large room has a lot of echo and movement of sound, so it can be loud even on a relatively quiet night. The food's not horribly pricey but it can add up.

Matos W.K., Tuesday, 10 March 2009 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

oooh farmers market yes!!! can you guys do something about the snow, pls?

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

I have to admit: I quite like the Canterbury, though I am sad they've abandoned the grilled cheese.

Is the Elysian a not, now? (ps. Matos - Hing Loon = A++++, thanks for that)

Jaq, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

Is the Elysian less crowded now? They were the first FAP location that quickly became de-FAP-ed because it became cumbersome to find a table even early on. Although I think it's just a case of us just forgetting about the Elysian. That would be a fantastic place too. It's worth putting on the list.

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

tell me about this place.

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 16:17 (seventeen years ago)

Greenleaf >>> Tamarind Tree.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

The Elysian is a big ol' brew-pub restaurant in Capitol Hill on Pike and 13th. They have good food options and beer options. (I'll let others comment on the beer selection.) Pluses: very large space, possible to get a big table if early enough. Minuses: it's hard to tell how soon it will be crowded. The staff (last time I went) looked a bit overtired, and hence the service wasn't that great. But every place has its bad day, too.

Vegetarian, vegan, and megameat options available.

I think it's the best option/compromise, especially if people want to eat and drink at the same time.

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 16:53 (seventeen years ago)

oh, they have wine as well.

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

And yeah, the recent news about Tamarind Tree makes it sound like Tamarind Nazi now. >:( RIP TTree.

Does Greenleaf have good vegetarian options and a variety of them, per chance?

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

In PDX, try the Screendoor on Burnside. Awesome NW-influenced "southern" food. One of the best restaurants in Portland by far, and less spendy than other places of it's caliber. I'd also recommend Nuestra Cochina on Division for excellent Mexican food.

Darin, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not sure if Greenleaf has vegetarian stuff (of if so, how strict they are in terms of fish sauce) because both times I was there with all non-vegetarians. But it was really good, and pretty cheap at least at lunch time.

I've heard good things about Screendoor - we were going to go for breakfast once but someone said the wait would be huge and we were kind of in a hurry.

Easter Time / Chocolate Time (joygoat), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

so is it ridiculous to try to go down to pdx and back in a day? should i plan an overnight?
where should i stay for best explorations if taking a train in and without car/reliant on public transport?

yur twit (tehresa), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

I remember being able to get a cheap room at Inn At The Convention Center, just across the river from the Amtrak and Greyhound terminals in downtown, and within the free MAX zone, but I think they raised their rates. :(

bacon = bad for the face + magic for the moobs (Mackro Mackro), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

Darin, Tuesday, 10 March 2009 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

One of my first ILX FAPs was at the Elysian- geesh, that was years and years ago now, wasn't it? Six Arms is great as well- good food, nice atmosphere- especially the cozy seats up on the balcony (although I guess those are less useful for a FAP crowd).

Then again, I'm stuck 3000 miles away, so I can only dream about tasty seattle food.

yur twit (tehresa), Sunday, 15 March 2009 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

oh yeah, it was settled upthread. I think we just finally talked about it person to person for the first time, that's all. Internet-settled doesn't translate to in-person-settled sometimes as far as getting people to come.

apologies, tehresa. alot of us have been really busy, memorial or not, so we're finally getting around to 21st/22nd weekend type stuff. The only wrench that could be thrown is if the Elysian reserves the place for a private party, which does happen. IF... IF... that happens, there are many options blocks away that will work out just fine. We're an overly txt-y/cell-phoney city, so we can dispatch en masse. no worries.

I'll try to swing by the Elysian this afternoon. I'm meeting up with other folks this afternoon nearby.

I'd like to do a reservation, but I have no clue how many people are coming. I know myself, Rodney, Jaq, you, and ... ???? Elysian probably wants a more solid number, and that number will come later this week. I don't think the place is so popular that we'd be screwed or can't fib on the number a little. everything will be ok. :)

The wife and I stayed at the Ace in November and it was great - usually we grab some cheaper place over by the convention center area, but she found a good deal here. Got a free upgrade to a private bath room thanks to my wife's experience with a mother who was a travel agent.

We ate good shit at Clyde Common downstairs, saw a show at the Crystal Ballroom down the street and staggered home after. Next morning we got coffee at the Stumptown downstairs and saw Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney in the lobby and my wife got all teenage girl starstruck. It was a great trip and I would very happily stay there again.

Easter Time / Chocolate Time (joygoat), Monday, 16 March 2009 02:27 (sixteen years ago)

well I'll be near downtown at PSU that evening, and since the Ace is downtown as well i'd guess somewhere around there? It's a monday night so it shouldn't be too busy anywhere. The Shanghai Tunnel is a pretty neat place that I haven't been to in forever and there's 900 other bars within spitting distance so we could float around as well. Who all is coming? Just kingfish, yourself and me? There's gotta be more recruitable bros.

OK, did it snow everywhere in the city today? WTF?

I managed to get myself to Cafe Umbria this afternoon so that I could have a nice latte. Wow... I forgot what real coffee tasted like. I love that place.

lyra, Monday, 16 March 2009 04:27 (sixteen years ago)

It snowed in a chunky wet way this morning, then gave out to sunshine, then showered, then got windy and cold and sunny then showered and got windy, then got REALLY windy and hell I dunno wtf

She Is Beyond Food In Weevil (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 16 March 2009 04:44 (sixteen years ago)

guys seriously, get it together. you have 4 days.

tehresa, Monday, 16 March 2009 06:23 (sixteen years ago)

what i am saying is: it is supposed to be 53º here tomorrow. you can surely do better than that!!!

tehresa, Monday, 16 March 2009 06:24 (sixteen years ago)

Sometimes It Snows In April

it did in 2007

She Is Beyond Food In Weevil (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 16 March 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

also, honestly, judging west coast weather based on the luck of the Weather Roulette Wheel of the East Coast? No fair.

She Is Beyond Food In Weevil (Mackro Mackro), Monday, 16 March 2009 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

yeah it's been an abnormally warm/mild winter here. sun today!

tehresa, Monday, 16 March 2009 15:44 (sixteen years ago)

keep in mind, if you're just looking at websites for weather, in March & April, it's a grab bag throughout the day.

Yesterday to recap:
* chunky snow
* sunny and nice
* drizzly and cold
* sunny and windy and cold
* grey and windy
* sunny and REALLY windy
* grey

March & April are the worst months in Seattle for weather only because you know most of the rest of the U.S. is having better weather. Then again, if you can deal with this, that bodes well for the future.

tehresa, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 02:39 (sixteen years ago)

I get mailings from the art museum and the symphony; Facebook event things from the library and SIFF; emails from various venues and ticket sellers and Seattle Center. When I first moved here, I checked the listings in the Weekly and Stranger - not so much any more. The free CityArts monthly magazine has some listings; the Crosscut.com site has some okay cultural coverage. I walk past Elliott Bay Books regularly so can check out who's reading there, and occasionally check the University Bookstore website for what authors are going to turning up there. When we were getting the P-I delivered, it was useful, but now it's gone ;_;

PDX is not ambiguous where as Portland is (Portland OR vs Portland ME -- the former is usually implied but you never know)

So The Seattle P-I died today, and the Crocodile is reopening on Thursday.

The shows

Thursday, March 19, 2009: The Crocodile and Via Tribunali present SOUNDCHECK with
HYPATIA LAKE
THE KINDNESS KIND
THE QUIET ONES
8:30 PM Doors — 21+ with identification — No cover

Friday, March 20, 2009: The Crocodile and Via Tribunali present SOUNDCHECK with
AKIMBO
BROTHERS OF THE SONIC CLOTH
PATROL

The Akimbo show is tempting. I haven't seen them in a while, and the new album Jersey Shores is fantastic.

go tza! it's your birthday!

The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)

Lucky!

At least NYC was warm today so coming back was a touch less painful. We went to a great pizzeria in georgetown this weekend- i think it was called "via tribiani" or something similar. Great pizza, made up for getting drenched in the rain when we couldn't find parking anywhere nearby. Good stuff.

lyra, Wednesday, 18 March 2009 22:12 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, the whole Neopolitan pizza thing is a minor craze, it's usually Via Tribunali vs. Tutta Bella. I prefer Veraci to either, as long as it's made to order and not sitting there under the baking lamps.

She Is Beyond Food In Weevil (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

minor craze in Seattle as of recent. Which is funny because before that, Seattle was pretty bleah on pizza.

She Is Beyond Food In Weevil (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

(since 2001 anyway)

tehresa, Thursday, 19 March 2009 04:07 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, going out of the way to get pizza in Seattle on a trip seems like a lower priority, even with a lot of these good places.

She Is Beyond Food In Weevil (Mackro Mackro), Thursday, 19 March 2009 04:11 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, going out of the way to get (coffee) in (anywhere but the Northwest) on a trip seems like a lower priority, even with a lot of these good places.

She Is Beyond Food In Weevil (Mackro Mackro), Thursday, 19 March 2009 04:13 (sixteen years ago)

When I moved to the northwest I started drinking beer and coffee and pretty much stopped eating pizza.

portland, what are we doing???

webmail me!

tehresa, Thursday, 19 March 2009 05:30 (sixteen years ago)

I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me why coffee in NYC is so crappy. Can't drink it for a few days after coming back here...

however, as much as I love NYC pizza, that via tribunali neopolitan style was SOOOO different from NYC pizza that it was pretty enjoyable.

lyra, Thursday, 19 March 2009 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

My (unfounded, totally made-up) theory about pizza, coffee, and beer in the northwest is that the pioneers made these things from recipes carried from back east without any first-hand experience or nostalgic attachment. So they found that coffee and beer in the style of the east and midwest didn't live up to the hype so they improved them, while the pizza was adequate enough that they stuck with it and missed out on how good it really can be.

Easter Time / Chocolate Time (joygoat), Thursday, 19 March 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

i mean ny pizza doesn't compare to pizza in italy, so... i guess that theory works?

waaa waaa waaaa lol (tehresa), Thursday, 19 March 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

Tehresa, do you care about chocolate per chance? (I know you probably don't want to make this trip all about food as you hinted above, but chocolate is more than just food too...) If so, if you can sneak into a Theo Chocolate factory tour in Fremont if there's an opening. Basically you get the best chocolate truffles for $5-ish tour price. Also, just to rep for my hood, Fremont is a nice neighborhood to visit in general. it's a perfect part-of-a-day escape/relax thing, especially if you stick near the canal and Burke-Gilman trail.

I will speak for the minority that thinks that the Coconut Curry bar is blech. BLECH. The Hazelnut Crunch and the Bread & Chocolate bars on the other hand are omg.

But yeah, you get fed truffles non stop during the factory tour -- double-roasted dark ones moreso than not. You also are made to wear a bandana.

anyone have advice on seattle relocation? i suppose remy's thread might be a good place to start?

Wow tza, did you get that job?

a short guy with a lot of power (Clay), Monday, 20 April 2009 23:19 (sixteen years ago)

Congrats tza! Remy's thread and also there was the one when Lingbert was moving here that had some good info on neighborhoods - possibly that really long and old "Seattle what's it like? ARe there jobs, etc" thread.

The weather today is just perfect. And all the mountains are out.

Jaq, Monday, 20 April 2009 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

the job is not got yet (dependent on a number of factors - mostly them finding the $ to pay me), but the situation is somewhat promising. long story probably best left off the internets. but i want to move anyway, and i figured i should do it in summer since it's the prettiest time of year there and it is the nastiest time of year here!

tehresa, Monday, 20 April 2009 23:48 (sixteen years ago)

Man yeah, the cherry blossoms seemed to just break out in pdx this week and my street is just so gorgeous.

a short guy with a lot of power (Clay), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 00:29 (sixteen years ago)

lol, dreams can come true!

seattle is awesome. i wanted to apply for colleges there but my parents said "it is too far away!" (they live in sc), which i thought was stupid because once you are away, it really doesn't matter where you are, you are away, right?! anyway, i don't know anything about seattle really, but i say you should go because it is a really nice city and i live in a crappy city so i think people should live in better places if i can't.

i'm sorry that was all stupid and rambling, i had a bit to drink.

I walked a few miles along the Sammamish River trail to get to work this morning and have to say maybe the east side of the lake isn't so bad after all. Although it was also completely gorgeous out which may have cast it in a rosier light.

There's a bunch of retirement housing complexes around town run by SHAG - cracks me up :)

We've got Clearwire, which is nice b/c it is portable (since we have moved so much). Starts at $20/month for 3 months, then goes up to $30/month when you do a 2 year contract - they have a month-to-month too. Qwest worked well for us when we still had landlines but haven't used them for a few years. Did a Comcast cable/internet/phone deal for $99/month 2 years ago which ended up not being worth it for us.

tehresa, Thursday, 18 June 2009 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

Oh yikes to dead people at the Center! though it probably happens more than you'd think - one of the city's main emergency housing shelters is there.

Sound Transit drivers seem to check transfers more so than Metro drivers, probably because Metro transfers are only worth $2 on ST buses no matter what fare you paid on Metro.

Once the ORCAs are fully in place, no more paper transfers ;_;

ooh xpost - i don't know! as far as drinks, jamie boudreau is opening a new bar but the opening date, while i know it will be very soon, has not yet been announced. so.. if it is open, maybe canon. if not... sun liquor? or really anywhere. foodwise i don't know! i'm going to the flying fish w/ work ppl on thurs... haven't thought about anything else. so many choices! i would not be opposed to maneki (man, i miss that place) but i also wouldn't mind trying something new.

what is up in seattle these days? anything interesting i should know about? i'm trying to figure out what i want to do (if i had a choice: everything possible!).

tehresa, Monday, 5 September 2011 01:26 (fourteen years ago)

I still haven't rode the link yet, because it doesn't yet go anywhere i need to. :(

you should come back too.

swagliacci (The Reverend), Monday, 5 September 2011 03:04 (fourteen years ago)

Pitch-in bbq fap at Jaq's house on Saturday evening around 7 pm! We'll provide hot links, salmon burgers, black bean burgers, veggie dogs + condiments/plates/cups/utensils + carnivore and vegetarian grill space. And a pitcher or two of sangria. email me at isthatpie-wp @ yahoo(dot)com for address/directions. If you have your own lawn chair, that'd be good to bring - otherwise blankets on the lawn under the apple tree.

Jaq, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 15:47 (fourteen years ago)
