your own album cover internet meme

Very addictive.

1 - Go to “wikipedia.” Hit “Random Article”
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random

The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to “Random quotations”
or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”
or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 - Use Photoshop/MS Paint or similar to put it all together.

This thread reminds me, I haven't checked facebook today.

•--• --- --- •--• (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 26 February 2009 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

This meme started a while ago, and I think it's only resurfaced now that the "25 Random Things" phenomenon has shown Facebook users that Notes can be used for the transmission of surveys, chain letters, and the like.

Anyway, here's the one I did last June:

baaderonixx, Thursday, 26 February 2009 09:27 (seventeen years ago)

Click "All Sizes" and download from there. If it doesn't have an "all sizes" button I don't use that pic. But someone complained to me about using their picture, so I won't be using the "interesting" link. A creative commons search would be better, if not randomer.

Of cource you have to keep "selecting" until you find one worth doing.

Mark G, Thursday, 26 February 2009 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

Having said that, the fact that the "Violet Green Swallow" title and bird happen to match, is pure coincidence.

Mark G, Thursday, 26 February 2009 10:58 (seventeen years ago)

I selected diagonally, which isn't technically cheating because it doesn't specify which direction the third one had to be in.

In Zapotec cultures of Oaxaca (southern Mexico), a muxe (or muxhe) is a physically male individual who dresses and behaves in a feminine manner; they may be seen as a third gender.[1] Some marry women and have children while others choose men as sexual or romantic partners.[2] According to anthropologist Lynn Stephen, muxe "may do certain kinds of women’s work such as embroidery or decorating home altars, but others do the male work of making jewelry. Many now have white-collar jobs and are involved in politics."[3]

Easter Time / Chocolate Time (joygoat), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:53 (seventeen years ago)

Peter Moog (1871-1930) was a schizophrenic outsider artist and one of the "schizophrenic masters" profiled by Hans Prinzhorn in his field-defining work Artistry of the Mentally Ill.

Moog became a waiter and later a tavern owner, getting married in 1900 to a woman who gave him three children. Throughout his life, he had been prone to a "loose life style, alcoholism, and sexual excess" (Prinzhorn 1972, p. 144) and had suffered from gonorrhea. He had his first schizophrenic episode in 1908, shortly after his wife's death in 1907.

His episode convinced him that he had to be a poet, and he drifted from town to town trying to give lectures and start his own printing press. Six weeks afterwards, his relatives finally committed him to an asylum. In the asylum he wrote lewd poetry, starting to paint in 1912. In a surprising contrast to his verses, all of his paintings were of saints and religious images.

The style of his paintings is reminiscent of a stained glass window. Figures are composed of many narrow strips, each decorated with its own ornamental pattern and each of a different color. Moog displays the common outsider horror vacui, filling every space with decoration.

He painted saints in order to atone for his earlier sins, and renounced his earlier lifestyle, equating sexuality with sin and renouncing tobacco and alcohol during his years in the asylum.

Ok, I know this might sound hysterical (but prolly not all that much), but I would like -- LOVE -- to find all the photos I used again and link to them and attribute them directly to their source, especially in light of all the Hope poster hubbub. I realize that none of these little larks are going to be printed a hundred million times and seen by every human living outside of a cave like the Hope poster has been, but when I was reading about the details of what's being argued there, the first thing I thought of was this. We're all stealing people's images, adding nothing to them that would stand up in court as substantially changing the intent or content of the photo, and it's doubtful that it's fair use by any stretch. Not that I think any of the photographers would complain -- so long as they're attributed. A link to their image on Flickr might even be nice. Like I said upthread, you can't do shit with a shit photo, and the entire thing usually hangs on the image used.

So my question is -- what can I do to re-find the images I used? I don't have the originals, and if I do, I renamed them to fit with the name I gave the "band." I can randomly search all day, but that's not likely to get me far, if anywhere.

kenan, Sunday, 1 March 2009 10:34 (seventeen years ago)

search flickr images by color

if you don't stan for something, you will fall for anything (roxymuzak), Sunday, 1 March 2009 10:39 (seventeen years ago)

I'll leave the ones I posted earlier up on photobucket for now, but only so that if any of you spot one of the pics in your random searches, you can holla at me (the ilx email addy works fine). I've been refreshing that random page for 20 minutes, and haven't seen a one of 'em. But after 7 days I'll take them down, and in the future I won't post anyone else's photo without a link back to it.

Sorry, I had a bit of an attack of conscience, I guess.

kenan, Sunday, 1 March 2009 10:42 (seventeen years ago)

How do you guys go through the process? I notice that a lot of you guys edit the pictures a bit, but do you all really do that first random article, quote and picture thing, or do you cherry pick by clicking random a few times until something OK come up? Or do you do the whole process over and over until you find a decent combination? Or perhaps it's bad form to even ask...

I tried to do this, but all the pics I got were copyrighted. Drats.

Øystein, Sunday, 1 March 2009 10:42 (seventeen years ago)

kenan, Sunday, 1 March 2009 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

They're ALL copyrighted, by the person who took them. Tacitly, but no less binding.

kenan, Sunday, 1 March 2009 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

Or do you do the whole process over and over until you find a decent combination?

After the first couple times that's what I did.

kenan, Sunday, 1 March 2009 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

roxy -- that search isn't going to do the job at all, especially not for for black & white. But it was worth a shot.

kenan, Sunday, 1 March 2009 10:52 (seventeen years ago)

They're ALL copyrighted, by the person who took them

unless they've selected a creative commons licence (all of which require attribution tho). personally i wouldn't worry about it, whether or not it's technically fair use, it's essentially harmless and this (ilx specifically) is such a limited domain.

ledge, Sunday, 1 March 2009 10:58 (seventeen years ago)

I know. But it's a thought. I was going to post things on Facebook, where the meme came from, but then thought that I don't want to do that without linking back, because the audience would be too big.

Chalsa Nepal - 'Let Them See' (1983)

'Let Them See' is the long-lost cornerstone of the nearly-forgotten but deeply influential post-post-punk Circuscore scene based in La Digue in the Seychelles from the early 1980s through the fall of the Berlin Wall. The album was produced jointly by Robert Gotobed of Wire and Albert Kuvezin (later of Tuvan thoat singing combo Huun-Huur-Tu), and features guest contributions from bassist Lemmy Kilmister, trombonist Peter Zummo, ex-Shangri-Las Mary Weiss, and string arrangements by future Fraggle Rock music director Don Gillis.

Chalsa Nepal combine their obvious debt to Crass, the bands of Disques du Crepescule, and an abiding love for classic skiffle 78s with the longstanding Seychelles tradition of Circus Music derived from the islands' French, African, Indian, and Chinese populations' roots. 'Let Them See' (a title taken from a quote by band-hero Henry David Thoreau) is a free-wheeling set of neo-psychedelic disco-dirges and xylophone-led post-Soul proto-dubstep pop confections--albeit with a tendency toward Marxist-Feminist death metal darkness.

Says Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, "The first time I heard it, I hated it; but the second time, my brain turned around backwards in my skull. It changed me forever; I think it changed all of us." And Simon Reynolds adds, 'it wasn't until I heard Chalsa Nepal's second album that I realised the truly infinite breadth of the Situationist-derived 'ardcore 'nuum and the ways in which it affects us, reaching even into today's most hauntological booty-beats revivalists."

jel --, Sunday, 1 March 2009 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

From flickr, you mean? If the photo is on their main photo display page and there are no larger sizes available, just take a screenshot and crop it down. If the photographer chose the option not to make it right-clickable, flickr stretches a 1x1 pixel transparent gif over the photo on the main display page called "spaceball.gif" and taking a screenshot is the easiest way around that.

kenan, Sunday, 1 March 2009 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

How do you guys go through the process?

1. In order keep fellow flickrites happy and simulate randomness, search for "creative commons" and sort that list by "most interesting". Take the xth photo, after checking that it is "some rights reserved".

2. Wikipedia - same.

3. Quote - same.

weatheringdaleson, Sunday, 1 March 2009 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

Croatian rockers Namyslow have been making waves in Eastern Europe since 2004, with a sound that puts Mew, Will Oldham, and Don Caballero in a blender and hits "frappe." Their sweaty, infamous live shows have earned them rave reviews and noise complaints in dozens of cities. Their English-language debut, ...to get money from it, includes re-recorded material from their two previous full-lengths, plus two new songs and remixes of single "Agrajag" by Andre Wocenski, Soda Popinski, and DJ Van Blueski. Voted #59 on Pitchfork's Top 100 Albums of 2008, ...to get money from it is poised to make Namyslow the perfect soundtrack for shaking off those drunken winter blues.

Or, if Firefoxing, go to Tools > Page Info, and click the Media button--it'll show you every image, etc, on the page, and let you save it, even if it's protected by invisible GIFs floating over the top.

I got it with Chrome but now I feel my finished product is too sucky to even share. :(

Latham Green, Tuesday, 24 May 2011 20:08 (fourteen years ago)

sucky is the point though ;)

it seems like it would be some smooth jazz band with too much midi-piano sound

FWIW it is dead easy to get images from Flickr when using Opera. Just turn CSS styling off - bob's your uncle, the picture is there unimpeded by floating invisagifs.

*they're a little good at least. streets ahead my Paint skills.

weird how 95% of the most interesting (= most viewed, commented, and favorited, right?) portraits on flickr are of pretty girls, and the other 5% are of craggy homeless guys captured in craggy, artistic poses. or maybe that isn't so much weird as it is totally predictable.

gtforia estfufan (unregistered), Tuesday, 24 May 2011 21:35 (fourteen years ago)

not that Norks would ever have a craggy homeless guy in their album art. they're not that kind of band.

Norks are pretty classy guys.

i think of it as ripping the "blue monday" twelve-inch, the go! discs logo & design, and captured tracks' wishy-washy house style

I have no idea where the original photo is from. I just c/ped the link from where I posted this on Facebook two years ago.
